Neat old Hornet. My Grandparents had a green Hornet wagon. I'm not sure of the year of theirs as I was just a little guy. I just remember everything being very basic and green everywhere. And the smell of Kool non filters.. Hehe. Different times. Thanks for sharing as always, Lou. Take care.
Love the hornet.! I don't even care that it's a 6 banger(as we called them back then) . Great survivor amc . Very clean and well cared for, too. AMC sure used that 6 for a long time ! Thanks lou and to the owner - he should be very proud of his car. !
Nice car. I remember the various AMC offerings from this era and I also remember the SST abbreviation, which back then primarily stood for Super-Sonic Transport (like the Concorde). I think this Hornet would need a verrrrry long runway for that, but still a cool ride!
What a nice survivor vehicle. That engine-turned trim piece on the back is cool and unexpected. Love the color of that straight-six, and the whole car is so clean!

I would say it was a perfect car for a college girl in the day. I don't recall seeing many of these in back in the '70's-'80's, although AMC didn't really grab my attention then. I thought they were too spartan and rather "geeky", for loss of a better word. Now I see it as attractive. I like the wink to Nash with the words "Weather-Eye" for the air controls. Nash was known for that since 1939.
@@Ithinkiwill66 When my father was looking for a cheap first car for me in the early '80's there was so many geeky older cars out there - Plymouth Scamps, Granada's, etc, that were painted avocado green and burnt orange. These were "NO, NO!" cars! LOL Gremlins and Pacers didn't even make it to that level! :)
I know Ken and was blown away when I saw that car in person for the first time, couldn’t believe how nice it was for being that original and even older than me on top of it!
Lou, i'm a longtime viewer, so i'm on a wonderful friend's terminal. my cousin Brendan's dad got one of these 72s with the same fabric, showroom new, deep AMC green, and the base 2.4 liter four at an estate sale with a little less than four thousand miles on it- with that "new car" smell. ultimate frisbee in Golden Gate Park. fourty years ago. awesome post.

Back in the Spring of 1972 when I was 21 and-a-half living in Indy, I was in the market looking for a replacement of my '66 Pontiac LeMans that had a couple of "the other guy hit me" dents that were "so so repaired" by repair shops. (I liked the car: 326 V8 2 bbl model in lovely turquoise, 2 door) One of the several make models I looked into with my dad was a new AMC "Hornet". That model I drove was a V8 (?) and it moved...moved way better than my folks previous Rambler "Classics" (3 of them: a '59; '64; and a 1966. They finally gave up on the AMC line for Oldsmobile's "Delta 88's" [1970 & '71] and "Cutlass" '75 and 1980 year models...and, I still think the '70 model was the best). Anyway...Dad thought the "Hornet" was too much of a powerful car. ( Shoot! The Pontiac had more power than the "Hornet"...I think 225 or 250 HP!) And, another thing...my " old man" didn't like the "pushy sales guy". (Dad had this "theory" that all ex-cons were use used car salesmen...this poor fellow must have looked like one). Speaking of "high performance cars" ... when I was car searching without Dad once or twice, I found a used "high performance car"...quite used in just its two to three year old time. This baby was at a Ford dealership: Ed Martin Ford. It was a Ford 429 V8 "Interceptor" Indiana State Police 4 door model with, metal mesh back seat area. Just think of the many gas stops and head turns a 21 year old guy would have had with that monster!? Oh, I looked at a few others: '71 Datsun "something or other model"... an Opel "Cadet". I liked that one...but beyond my price line... and a used 1970 navy blue VW "Bug" that had lots of rock and pebbles marking when owned by some blonde teenage beauty that lived in "the sticks" as my dad use to say. Well, Lou, Dave, and all viewers...I ended up with a 1969 VW "Bug" in dark green. Nice...at first, till I had engine problems and a blown engine! Such was the search for a "new car" which became the search for another "used car". In fact the '69 VW was bought by my dad from the same guy he bought the Pontiac "Le Mans" from who was one of Dad's work buddies. Gee...wonder what ever happened to that "beautiful blonde"?
What a great car . As a AMC guy would love to drive a car that would be able to go anywhere and get reasonably good fuel economy and not have over $15,000 to $20,000 and still draw a crowd in the car world . You can’t take your trailer Queen everywhere so this would make a great daily and have some enjoyment as well . It’s a true 70,s feeling to see it .

The Hornets were also a great car to modify for street fun too. I remember how they looked so mean back in the late 70's when you "jacked up" the rear suspension and put N-50 Pro-Tracs with the deep dished slot mags on the back. This beauty is way too pristine as a survivor to do that to. GREAT VIDEO LOU.

I was a fan of the Hudson Hornet so when AMC brought it back in the 70s I instantly liked it. I always thought it would make a great street rod. What a great survivor. That was the find of the century to get a Hornet in such origional condition. There were never that many around, I liked the label with the dwell setting. It's been a ga-zillion years since I used a dwell meter.
Good for you Ken. The Hornet is definitely not a “me too car” at car shows and on the road. Enjoy. Although some car guys will turn there nose up at the car it,s always nice when people see my 1973 Hornet (29,000 original) and It reminds them of better days.

I had a 70 SST painted corvette white with black vinyl roof. To add some style I added a raised bump gremlin hood which fit perfectly and a blacked out gremlin grill. The 70 interior was honestly a lot classier then this 72 version. Also learned to despise 727 transmissions with this car. You could fit a decent wide rear wheel too with raised shackles and cal tracks

Hey Lou. Nice looking Hornet. I haven't seen these since I was a boy, this was back in the 80! I've seen a couple of them here and there, but not many. I love the colour of this AMC Hornet SST 2 door. I love how original this car is. Except I'm sure for the wheels and tires, the car looks as though it came from the AMC showroom floor like this. Very nice. :)
@@loucostabile I consider it a shame that American Motors is no longer producing cars. I remember cars like Javelin and AMX, the Ambassador (Amby as I like to call them), the Matador, the Hornet, the Concord, the Eagle, and the Jeep XJ Cherokee.
I bought one these in 82. It had the 258-6 with a 3 on the tree. It had 52k on it, and was clean. I don’t know what the power specs were, but that thing did hellish burnouts for a whole block. It was the best little car. I traded it on a 82 Escort. A mistake I will never forgive myself for . .

The 4.2 only had around 110HP but 195- 210 lb ft of torque at only like 1400 RPM.Depending on year. Very diesel like. But they fell flat on their face . They really needed a 4bbl carb and a less restricted exhaust.
@@damontroch4765 I checked specs on the 1970 that I had: 150 HP @ 3800 rpm - 239 ft/Lb torque @ 1800. I don’t recall it ever being anemic. We have a rather long, steep hill as a main thoroughfare where I live, and the little Hornet would just hum right up at 50+ mph without breaking a sweat.

Very beautiful car ! My mother bought a 72 from her friend back in 1982 for $85 ! It was the ugly turquoise blue but ran perfectly and started easily ,every time . I have a fondness of AMCs for their style and reliability. I was pretty ticked though when my stepdad sold it to a junkyard , still running quite well right before my 16th birthday. 👎

We had a 1971 Hornet SST Coupe;. The under dash tray served as a mounting for the air conditioning vents if the car was equipped with factory AC. An AC car would have vents in the area above the HVAC controls as well as a control knob that would turn the AC on as well as temp setting....counterclockwise for "colder" to "desert only." which allowed the AC to stay on in hot, dry climates. A great, well preserved example. We had our Hornet for 10 years and unfortunately, a couple of car accidents and rust eventually did it in.

Monza? that wasn't made til '75.....the Hornet was considered AMC's compact entry, and it rivaled the Nova, the Duster, and the Maverick. It took the place of the pre-70 American, I think the Hornet had a slightly longer wheelbase.

It's sad that they're almost all gone. Mine was a '70 strip-down with the three on the tree of which I converted it over to a floor-shift. It never gave me problems. It had a lighter shade of what this one has, with a sort of beige interior. The GM Saginaw steering gear gave precise feed-back. I don't know why or to whom I rid the car to. But, I wish I had it back. Converting one of these over to a five- or six-speed manual and even mounting the fuel injection system of the later 4.0s would make this a thrifty vehicle, surpassing anything new, in terms of lifelong maintenance- and repair costs, even if the Hornet were to get somewhat less mpg. The savings in repairs that wouldn't need to get done would more than pay for the slightly extra thirst

Love the hornet.! I don't even care that it's a 6 banger(as we called them back then) . Great survivor amc . Very clean and well cared for, too. AMC sure used that 6 for a long time ! Thanks lou and to the owner - he should be very proud of his car. !

1971 Hornet S/C 360, is also a neat find. My Dad had a 73 Gremlin, and 76 Hornet wagon, both 258 6.
HI Chris, I'm on the look out for one of those S/C 360's, Lou
Nice car. I remember the various AMC offerings from this era and I also remember the SST abbreviation, which back then primarily stood for Super-Sonic Transport (like the Concorde). I think this Hornet would need a verrrrry long runway for that, but still a cool ride!

Hi Joseph, Interesting how now you see it as "attractive" :-) Cars have an amazing way of looking better with age, Lou
Could of owned a Gremlin! Lol
You just described a Mercedes BMW Audi Acura and Lexus

Lou, i'm a longtime viewer, so i'm on a wonderful friend's terminal. my cousin Brendan's dad got one of these 72s with the same fabric, showroom new, deep AMC green, and the base 2.4 liter four at an estate sale with a little less than four thousand miles on it- with that "new car" smell. ultimate frisbee in Golden Gate Park. fourty years ago. awesome post.
Hi Romaine Lettuce, Happy to read you've been watching the Channel for a long time. I appreciate you sharing that, and glad you're having fun with me. Happy to read this car brings back memories of your Cousin Dad's car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
Hi Tom, The VW Bug became the WINNER :-) Thanks for sharing your story, Lou

What a great car . As a AMC guy would love to drive a car that would be able to go anywhere and get reasonably good fuel economy and not have over $15,000 to $20,000 and still draw a crowd in the car world . You can’t take your trailer Queen everywhere so this would make a great daily and have some enjoyment as well . It’s a true 70,s feeling to see it .

I remember how they looked so mean back in the late 70's when you "jacked up" the rear suspension and put N-50 Pro-Tracs with the deep dished slot mags on the back.

Hi Florida Al, Yep, this Hornet will sting the smile out of you :-) Lou
