On "My Car Story" we're in the Western Suburbs of Chicago IL on 10-3-22.
We're looking at a 1973 American Motors Corporation Javelin in Pewter Silver Paint. The car comes with the factory 401 CI V8 engine, and a 4 Speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Dale Wright. Dale’s had this car since 1988. He shares he saw a Javelin on the road driving by as a boy and told his Dad that was the car for him. In 1988 he convinced his Grandmother to loan his $1500.00 and purchased the car. He sold his other Javelin for $1500.00 and repaid his Grandmother, and this is that car. Dale’s added some AMX pieces to his AMC Javelin, factory 401 CI engine 4 Speed manual transmission car.

I just picked up a 73 401 four barrel four speed one of 1,420 made from what I understand, unfortunately it's missing the motor and transmission and I want to find a numbers matching block I don't know where to start my buddy has a 74 AMX javelin with a ton of extra parts but unfortunately no engines! I don't know what the car is worth it's in rough shape but I had to get it cuz it's worth saving! Please correct me if I'm wrong but it is 1 of 1,420 right? The VIN starts with A3M7982

They never got the credit they deserved, with Cudas , Chargers, Camaros and all the rest prowling the streets. I have watched several videos of the Alabama police car Javelins, they say they could hit 200 mph in persuit, this one is stunning, I always loved the look of the raised front wheel wells, they looked fast standing still, the attention to detail on this one is fantastic. What I love the most about it is, he drives it, and enjoys it, still to this day, love the videos Lou.

Thank you Lou for your AMC support, you are one of a few that brings these AMC cars to light. I am an original owner of a 1973 Javelin AMX. Ordered it new in March of 1973. The color is Cordoba Brown (gold metal flake) with gold fade to black T stripe. The interior is all black vinyl. The options I ordered on the AMX are: 401 Go Pack, 4-speed manual transmission, 3.91 rear gears, all tint windows, AM FM Stereo Motorola radio, in dash map light, inside under dash hood release, front under bumper spoiler, body side scuff molding, light group, between front seat console and power steering. The only changes to the car I have made are, 1970 Rebel Machine intake manifold, a 1 in. larger front sway bar with the addition of a 1/2 in rear sway bar. The AMX now has 95,000 plus miles, the engine has not been rebuilt. The AMX stickered at $4371.90 while the go pac option cost $476.25. That makes this AMX with the go pac, only 1027 of a total 5707 AMX's built in 1973, that were ordered with the cowl induction, or roughly only 25% had it. This AMX is a great handling car with awesome accelerating. One that will stay in my family. Thank you again Lou for keeping the AMC name alive.

My neighbor down the street had a short body AMX with side pipes. It was a Hunter Green if I remember correctly. That was 1972 and I was 12 then. AMC always had great muscle but everyone was either GM Ford or Chrysler. For me actually The Machine in Navy Blue was probably my favorite because it was different, and that’s the premise of owning a muscle car in the muscle car era. Great Videos, Thank You Lou!!!!

@@loucostabile No it’s the short body version with the big AMX badge on the c-pillar. It had the ram air hood instead of cowl induction. The fun was out the back door of my house and down the street was a Dodge Chrysler Plymouth and AMC dealer and across the street was a Chevy dealer. So as a little kid I could play in probably the best muscle cars that were produced. My dad knew the owners of both dealerships.

THWAK!!! Oh Lou! Big bro Lou?! Ya hear that, man?! THAT was the sound of my super floppy DC sneaks getting blown off my tubesocked stocking feet and landing on the far wall, man LMAO!! Oh boy. THIS one, man. Weakness. I have many weaknesses lol...all of them attributable to my hyper, girl crazy , perpetually lightweight JV baseball jock nature.....This is one gorgeous Javelin, bog brother. I remember telling you a while back that my older sister Jeannie had a silver Jvalin when I was a young kid. I remember that car, the impact on me.....Javelins are like the Micehelle Pfeiffer and Whitney Houston's of American Muscle Cars, you know? Just so curvy and gorgeous and unapologetically hot. Unique in that regard, you know? I think my big bro Dale did a spectacular job here-keeping her pure, but elevated....that AMX treatment? Well, my stocking feet are up and twitching, and I am knocked out cold. So tell Dale that! The ride you guys took was awesome. And that SOUND. Wow. I had to keep pausing it to make sure it wasn"t sound from my neighbors above me, man. Like harmonics. Beautiful. Thanks big brother Lou! :) JV Johnny

I loved the Javelin when first restyled for 1971, but just like every car in those days they were restyled every 2-3 years. And just like Chrysler they would introduce a really clean attractive style and feel as though they had to change it through “refinements” that did nothing to help the original design. They only mucked it up.

I get that the car as factory equipped was/is a rare bird, but IMO the owner has done such a complete job with the correct AMX stuff, I like it as is. I think (for me) I'd add power steering and brakes. It already has 'the correct number of pedals' ;) Also neat hood! I've never seen a functional cowl induction hood on an AMC. By 73, that lusty 401 likely was being choked by the emissions thing...what was the rated ghp on that engine?...It certainly still sounds awesome, and has lots of torque!...I so wish that AMC could have survived another 50 years; they made many fine cars, but frequently were behind the curve, in knowing just what the American public wanted...and of course, they were strapped for cash, compared to the Big Three.

WOW.......I bought my 1973 Javelin in 1993......I thought I had had it a long time!!!! Mine was a Faun Bidge base model. I added the AMX rear spoiler (common dealer add on) and painted it BBO. As a two owner car she is very streight and a great car. I feel the 2nd gen Javelins are very under rated and often over looked. I have the factory mats in brown as my interior is brown and tan. Back around 1981, or thereabouts, I remember a fellow shipmate in the U.S. Coast Guard had a Javelin like this. It was purple with a 304 two barrel. I do remember riding in the passenger seat and thinking it looked more like an airplane inside than a car.
Whoever said AMC made ugly cars never really took a hard look at one of these, they are a rolling piece of art sculpture!

Great car. AMC did an awesome job with exterior and interior styling, and the build quality looks very good. This was my favorite paint color as well. I oftentimes wondered where AMC would have been had they continued? Don't judge me, but 18 year old me fell in love with AMC Pacer and was prepared to buy a new '75 model ...until I took it for a test drive. No sooner did I leave the dealer's lot and discovered how gutless it was, and how bad the brakes were. I ended up buying a new '75 Chevy Nova instead. This gentleman has a special car, of which must pretty rare by now. As always, thanks Lou!

Those are rather good looking cars, but one thing which always drove me crazy was the positioning of the rear wheels - I would've moved them forward a few inches to produce some more rear overhang. I love that 'satin silver' paint! Those front fender bumps are very C3 Vette-like.
And I never knew that those could be had with a cowl induction hood, let alone an active induction system!
I'd probably keep the AMX bits on the car, and just keep the Javelin pieces safe in the house/with the car. I'll bet Grandma is/would be proud to see that car today.
Can't believe those valve cover tags - I'm sure that at least some of them leaked. The "6" might've meant the sixth year of Javelin production.
Those early '70s tachometer/clock combos! I know GM had them in cars like that '73 TA you passed, and if I'm not mistaken, Chrysler put them in Barracudas and Challengers.
That buzzard didn't take his carrion luggage when he flew away from the approaching car!

Two thumbs up to Dale for an excellent authentic restoration. I am the original owner of a 1972 Javelin AMX w/401, so many times these cars are restored have several wrong items, not the way they left the factory. On Dale's the radiator coolant decal is also in the correct location. Two things I notice, though minor, the wiper motor should be gold-tone, and at the bottom of the rear window there should be the AMC logo emblem. The car even has the correct Goodyear raised white letters E-60 x 15 polyglas tires which is what AMC put on the AMX from '71 to '74, today those aren't cheap to buy, everyone else goes for the cheaper Bridgestone radials.

Always like the AMC Javlin, a good friend on mine, Father owed the AMC Dealership in Elgin on Rt. 19 in the 70's 73? 74?, I think it's a Kia Dealership now? AMC had some nice models but in the 70's they were some tough economic times especially for the AMC Dealerships I think AMC tried to save themselves with the Bricklin in 73-74 it had a Ford 351 Windsor in it but sad to say with the price freeze by Tricky Dick and AMC Car Models losing its appeal with the American car buyers and being #4 as car producer, AMC was on a slow spiral towards the drain! No longer the MA & PAs Rambler any longer! But it's Great to see a Clean Javlin again! Nice video for a handsome car and a great owner! Thanks Lou
