Seeking out the best fish n chips around Newfoundland is fun, but there are lots of other unique landmarks you can chase 👉🏼 ua-cam.com/video/j20Ds-KKv_o/v-deo.html
Really surprised Kieths Diner didn’t make it on here! A Goulds staple, legendary stuff. Brings people from all around the island. Absolutely the goat as a Gouligan, would recommend!
The Duke of Duckworth will always have a special place in my heart for Fish and Chips... especially on Good Friday. Always top notch in my book. For other, non traditional places you would go for Fish and Chips which I find is underrated is Fionn MacCools on Kenmount Rd and Jack Asters on Harbour Drive. Yes, both are nationwide restaurant chains but they make a damn good fish and chips, but there is nothing like the local spots all around Newfoundland. This past year on Good Friday, I was vacationing down in Florida and you gotta have Fish and Chips on Good Friday.. its just what you do as a Newfoundlander... so I gave it a shot down there... and it was the worst fish and chips I had in my life and it was at a seafood place. I think eating my shoe would be less rubbery than their Fish and Chips lol
Haha I'm sorry you had to experience that... we're definitely spoiled as Newfoundlanders! And just for the record, I am a BIG fan of the Duke's fish n chips. I had to find a way to at least get them in with an "honourable mention"!
Thanks, Mark! This video added 3 new places for us to review! It's been way too long since we did a Fish & Chips video, but hopefully in the new year, we can start knocking some places off our huge list. Great video, as always
Loved this video. Been to the restaurant in Fogo island. The place is very simple and genuine local small business type which is why we went there. Fish n chips and the pan fried salmon they served was amazing!! My five years old finished her dinner and was fishing for mine! Thank you making these videos. ❤
For a moment I got excited when you mentioned “Ernies”. I thought “he made it out to Brigus after all!” 😆That’s what the locals in the area call “E&E Take Out”. We chatted on a previous video about this before. Haha I’m actually not surprised it didn’t make the top 10 - like I said, you either love the batter or you hate it. Oh that thick garlicky goodness 😂
I never had Leo's. It was always Ches's while going to college, loved it. The next time I make it to town I will definitely try Leos's. Another great video Mark!
Awesome video once again and nice touch, By the Beach is a family favourite and in our eyes number one. Spent my summers on Pennywell road before moving to Mount Pearl so Leo's will always have a special place for sure.
The Duke has always been my favourite. In saying that I never had a lot of the places on your menu. Chafes and by the beach is good! Surprised Leo’s is 1st but again, never tried it. Good video.
Dude! Once again you created an outstanding video that is not only informative, but it also conveys just how much you care about Newfoundland. My wife made me rewind several times because she was writing down the name of every town and every restaurant. I’ll let you know after our trip to NL if she agrees with your rankings. She’s from the North of England, so the judging could get little intense. :-)
Please do let me know how it goes! I know the Brits are passionate of their fish n chips too. We do it a bit different in Newfoundland but it is very good. If your wife wants to skip the dressing and gravy, she gets a pass... but let her know that it might not be easy to find mushy peas in Newfoundland. Not impossible, but it won't be easy.
@ she’s looking forward to the gravy. Finding good mushy peas on this side of the pond could be its own video. Best left to here. Again, thanks for all the good advice. We love your stuff. Keep up the good work. I’m sure Newfoundland and Labrador bureau of tourism really appreciates you too.
Thank you for this video. Lately I’ve been seeking out places around St. John’s seems like you’re in another decade (for example, topsail road pizzeria). Would love a video on timeless spots in Newfoundland. Keep up the great work!
That's a great idea. I keep focusing on fish n chips places when I travel around but there are lots of great timeless places that focus on other things. You just helped me with a long term idea for a fun video. Thank you!
Hi Mark 👋🏻 just came across your videos for Fish n Chips. It’s so different to what we consider a Fish n Chip meal in the UK 🇬🇧 I’m so intrigued how it came about by putting stuffing ( Is it stuffing that is normally used with turkey and chicken ) on fish and chips. By the way I love the fact that you call chips, chips and not fries like a certain country that will remain nameless 😉
Yes you got it. We call it "dressing", but it is essentially the same "stuffing" that you're thinking about. Not sure where that stems from, but it's a staple of Newfoundland FnC. Not everyone loves it, but it's available pretty much everywhere that you can get FnC. And I will call them chips til the day I die, even if I'm at a place like McDonlad's haha. I think it's more of a Newfoundland-specific thing than a general Canadian thing, but when it comes to "fish and chips" I can't imagine anyone anywhere order a plate of "fish and fries" 😂 It just wouldn't be right!
You put a lot of work into this video 👍. I’ve heard time and time again Leo’s is the spot. When my brother comes home to visit he goes to Leo’s but my gf and I haven’t been there yet and she keeps talking about going. She loves the grease but my stomach can’t eat tolerate because of stomach issues but I will definitely go there with her before Christmas
Thanks for the list. By the Beach has been my favourite for years. But I've never had Leo's; I always went to Ches's when on that strip. Now you have me thinking I will have to rectify that! Have you had the fish & chips at Seashore Restaurant in Margaree? Also pretty phenomenal. They are only open seasonally, though - not sure when their season starts, but they close for the season in late Sept. We were there a bit after Labour Day and they were running out of some menu options then because they were winding down. Plenty of fish & chips though!
One of my favorite places to visit is the southwest coast. I came through in 2022 and 2023 but both times they were closed. Once I think because it was late January, and the other time in early September I think they just weren't open that day. I will get in there one day to give them a try though!
That certainly doesn’t look like the fish and chips I had when I was there a while ago. I read all the reviews and was looking forward to a great experience, I was disappointed to say the least. I will have to give them another try. I will, wholeheartedly agree with you on by the beach, they have nailed it! Thanks for doing the grunt work!
Thank you for watching! I hope that you get a chance to try Leo's again, and I hope it's a better experience for you. I've only ever had good visits but even my favorite spot can miss once in a while I spose!
First things first, I’m guessing you haven’t tried Badger Diner before. But it’s often nominated and wins the best fish n chips on the island. Or at least when the Herald used to be on the go. But give it a try. Won’t disappoint. And now for this video, I’m glad I continue to watch them, cause there’s some places here I’ve never had. And much like yourself, when I travel around NL I too, like to try fish n chips. I’ve been to Greenspond before as a little kid. But I have to get back. My Nans from there, moved to Windsor back in the 40’s from there. Her last name used to be Pond. Which the towns half named after. It gets its name from two family’s back in the day. The Greens and the Ponds. So while there I now have a place to eat, thanks to this video. Keep up the great work Mark my man. You’re truly doing much more for NL tourism than you could ever imagine .
Thank you Blair. That is really nice to read. I’d probably keep making these videos even if no one was watching because it’s fun to do this but it’s never gonna get old to read comments that end like yours just did. I have tried Badger Diner actually. It was definitely good but I couldn’t put it in my own top 10. I saw the signs out front saying they were voted #1. I’m sure I’d put them somewhere in my top 20. As for Greenspond, if you haven’t seen it already please go check out the full video I made about the town a couple of months ago ua-cam.com/video/1U_hLvwRw5M/v-deo.html such a beautiful place
I never knew the origin of the name Greenspond before, but I often wondered. It seemed like a strange name to me, as it's a coastal island, not on a pond at all. It looks gorgeous! Thanks for the info.
I’ve only been once to Newfoundland and that was this past May and I did go to Duke of Duckworth and I really did enjoy the Fish and Chips but I must admit that I had zero idea when they asked if I wanted “dressing” on the chips and I now regrettable said “no” . Now when I come back I’m definitely going to have it . A wonderful video on a most delicious topic. Thank you Ps my husband was salivating over all the choices you showed
I feel like people get nervous over "dressing" thinking of something like salad dressing maybe? I know you'll know better next time, and I bet you're gonna love it!
Mark, i was driving down O’Leary Avenue the other day and passed Scampers Snack Bar been there for as long as i can remember and i immediately wondered has Mark Royle been there ???
Scampers is pretty decent; I go there occasionally because it's a five minute walk from where I live. But all the ones from Mark's list that I've eaten at (which is three) were, in my opinion, better.
I live a hundred yards away from Leo’s and I really love the place, but the best fish and chips I ever ate was in Rose Blanche. I told the owner so at the time. Since then I had some at the Duke of Duckworth that came very close. Say what you will, the “secret” is really fresh fish.
Hey Mark I am a little late to the show from being on a holiday in the caribbean and now I am catching up on my favorite channels.......I used to love fish and chips.......not anymore.......have to take care of the old bod so that is off the menu.........I have never ever eaten at any of the these places so I will have to take your word for it but, I have had Ches a few times......
I haven't had Leo's in years, but I have no idea why not. I've thoroughly enjoyed every fish & chips I ever had there. I think part of the reason is that they close very early. Gotta get there soon, though. Looks deadly! Thanks for all the recommendations. I can appreciate that there must have been some tough decisions! (I'm gut-founded right now!😂)
That is the one draw back for Leo's. They sometimes have strange hours. Shutting down early somedays, and randomly just not being open at typical times other days. Not sure if this is a regular thing but I have gone there a few times and unexpectedly found them closed.
During my last visit home to St. John's I ate at Ches's the first day it was what i expected as it has always been my go to Fish and Chips with Leo's in second place.. I managed to finally got to try By the Sea this time after trying earlier this year and last summer, It was the best fish and chips i have had.. I had my sisters with me and they know the owner and he came out treated me to fresh Cod tips..amazing,,
Thanks Mark, my mouth is now watering for NL fish and chips….I have Leo’s on my list!😊. There used to be a fish and chips restaurant right on the wharf at Goose Bay….I think it was called Simpsons because there was a big cutout of Bart Simpson…no longer there, but I thought it was the best fish and chips ever…yes, the fish was straight from boat to kitchen!
There's a place called Whaler's in Red Bay that is supposed to be worth the trip across the straight on its own. Nowhere near Goose Bay of course, but they apparently know how to make a great plate of fish n chips in Labrador too!
Well, you're right on one thing. This is a video to get ya all riled up! I understand ppl who like Leo's love Leo's. I've always been a Ches's man myself but that might be the nostalgia in me. I grew up a minute away from Freshwater Rd and that was the pinnacle in the eighties. As i've moved away i still go back often. Everyone tells me Ches's is not the same but compared to the garbage fee n chee i get served here it's heaven. I go to Keith's out in the Goulds now as well. Only reason i'd ever go out there. 😂 I'd say it's in my top 3 and I'd give a special mention to Riverside in Cape Broyle. I quite liked their fish. I'd have the Duke over the Ship. I look at the Ship as more of a Folky music venue rather than a place that serves food. It might be lovely but i just don't trust it. I focus a lot on the batter as well. It's half the reason i hate mainland fish n chips (the other reason being freshness and choice of fish). It's also why i prefer Townie fish n chips. I find it different to all the different bayman varieties. I don't want variety..... or onions in me dressing!! 🤬🤬
People love to take crap about Ches's but it's still good to me. I like a lot of places more now, but the old side of the freshwater rd location is still one of my favorite places to sit down for a feed, even if they did take out some of those old yellow benches. I'm with you on the sentimentality. Plays a big role in why they still get my business from time to time.
As far as I know it is something very specific to Newfoundland. It's basically "stuffing" but in Newfoundland we call it dressing and it usually (maybe always?) involves "Mount Scio Farms Savoury" (an herb). Not sure if there's a specific guideline but my mom's involves bread crumbs and butter and salt and pepper and savoury. I think that it. Simple but so good.
Making a top 10 is very challenging. I believe you need to have 3 categories, pub fish and chips, fishing community and the local take out. For me (I only know St. John’s spots) the number ones are The Duke, Chafes and Keiths.
That's a very good top 3. And I agree making a few videos focused on those categories would be a very appropriate approach to take. I actually made a video about the best St. John's snack bars over a year ago, back before I really knew what I was doing with these videos. I snuck in the Duke (the only pub) and Chafe's (the only place outside city limits) on that one but the rest were snack bar/takeouts in town. Check it out if you haven't seen it before: ua-cam.com/video/c9mgCd3UFCo/v-deo.html
I enjoy King Cod these days in and around town, I haven’t had Leo’s in many years but will have to go again. If you haven’t tried the Dildo Boathouse Inn, you won’t be disappointed, great place, friendly people.
I definitely agree with the poor service but I liked the Duke myself in spite of it. And the tourist trap part of it is probably a subconscious reason for me to pick the Ship at #10 over it.
White Bay Convenience just west of Route 420! I've been told that recently they have switched to good ol' lard as opposed to seed oil...you can def taste the difference. Amazing fi and chi!
Seeking out the best fish n chips around Newfoundland is fun, but there are lots of other unique landmarks you can chase 👉🏼 ua-cam.com/video/j20Ds-KKv_o/v-deo.html
great video brother, I lived in st johns all my life and Im happy to finally see some people that live here brach out into the youtube scene.
I’m having a blast making these videos. Thanks for watching!
It's a hell of a compliment for the other restaurants when The Duke doesn't make the Top 10. Thanks for another great video Mark!
I doubt that the verdict bothers the owner, since he also owns the Ship.
I live in South Florida and never go anywhere. Your video made me realize that one day I'm going to go eat at Leo's.
Hope you actually get the chance, and if you do, PLEASE bring some of that sun with you!
Awesome video! You nailed it, especially with By Da Beach!
By Da Beach is a classic. Maybe on some days I would give them the top spot. Glad you enjoyed the video!
Really surprised Kieths Diner didn’t make it on here! A Goulds staple, legendary stuff. Brings people from all around the island.
Absolutely the goat as a Gouligan, would recommend!
Haha no doubt. Coming up with a top 10 was not an easy feat, and Keith's was one of the toughest cuts!

Love this! Mark, i sent a good friend of ours your link. She's a townie, but guaranteed to follow your vids
Awesome! Thank you Peter
Great video and great list. I have to drop by Leo's for a feed soon.....Take care, Bluefin.
Always a good time for a visit to Leo's! Merry Christmas to you and your family Bluefin!

Leo's is freaking amazing - the BEST!

@@mark_royle_newfoundlandI’ll definitely give them another try and let you know how it goes.

I feel like people get nervous over "dressing" thinking of something like salad dressing maybe? I know you'll know better next time, and I bet you're gonna love it!
Chafe’s Landing and The Captain’s Table are exquisite.
Mark, i was driving down O’Leary Avenue the other day and passed Scampers Snack Bar been there for as long as i can remember and i immediately wondered has Mark Royle been there ???
Most defintiely! Great spot for sure. Cutting the list for this video down to a top 10 was no easy task, and Scampers was a tough cut to make.

That Razor Ramon hoody is beautiful
Haha thanks for noticing. One of my absolute prized possessions!
When the wife and I were back home in October she had the fish and chips at Route 66 in Carbonear, friggin' phenomenal.
Loves Route 66! I have only ever had breakfast there but when I go back again I'll definitely give the fish n chips a try.

Newfoundland also has delicious chicken and chips
Clearly was never to Da Birds Eye in st brides cape st Mary’s bay
keets by keets is number 1, go to the goulds and get keets
Not even a mention of Keith’s?
Picking a top 10 is hard!
Jeezuz , who puts gravy on fish and chips ? Really ? Gotta go to Scotland for proper Fish n chips !
Stay away from Leo’s for god sakes.
Nasty. I won’t share what I’ve seen.. but please. If you don’t want food poisoning or COVID don’t go here.
Very glad the Duke isn't in the top 10. It's a total tourist trap with abysmal service.
Amazing, not easy to find a place that does that anymore. I'll be giving them a try when I get a chance. Thanks!
