Lyrics:
Hindered by sober restlessness. Submitting to the amber crutch. The theme in my aching prose. Fantasizing the sight of Manhattan; that pour of a bitter red being that escapes a thin frame. The rebirth of mutual love. The slipping on gloves to lay tenderly.
"I'm dying."
- "Is it blissful?"
"It's like a dream."
- "I want to dream."
This is what metalheads hear in their head when they’re in love
@@teine928
That has two meanings
Lmao😅
The most truthful comment
as a metalhead in love i second that
I can confirm, has happened twice
"Im dying"
-"is it blissful?"
"It's like a dream"
-"I want to dream"
I crii every time. Amazing song. Love the poetry.
Quade Carter agreed
Album is nothing but honest, open, poetry. That's why I often compare it to Converge's Jane Doe. Similar but Deafheaven took a lighter approach. Sunbather is horribly underrated by fans but in years to come everyone will be loving it. We're just lucky to know about it first. AMAZING album. It's framed in my room next to TDAGARIM by Brand New and Jane Doe by Converge.
Album is art and not only is it art, but it's truly an experience. The lows with the heavies along with the lyrics. Album is orgasmic to say the least. Why no one else sees it absolutely blows my mind. This album is truly something else. Its special to me. It can't be compared to anything else. WITTR is a common comparison but I've given them a chance with all their albums and it didn't fit my taste. Deafheaven just trumped my expectations. Album is a pure classic. Classics are often polarized to begin with. Album is a classic waiting to come.
Even in the same field as WITTR, Deafheaven change it up. Not only are they better they open up the doors to closed-minded folks who don't like metal. Album is golden. I can't even explain it enough. It's basically been on repeat since it came out. I knew on first listen that this album was going to fly and be something special to us all.
This album deserves all the praise and more. Can't believe that Rolling Stone gave this a 60/100 and then later called it best metal album. I love what they called it, but the 60 brought it from a 95 on metacritic to a 92. If it's number 1, give it a 100 and bring it up. Could've easily been a 95-100 for that reason. But thankfully no one under 50 reads rolling stone.
I saw that before Rolling Stone, album had a 97. That would've been highest scoring album in their database at over 15 reviews. So had RS given them the score they deserved (since it was their metal album of the year 80-100), this would've been highest rated album ever. And it deserves to be way up there. Over the 94 My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy has. Album would've been a 97. NINETY SEVEN. That is Ocarina of Time status (best reviewed video game ever)
Man. I don’t like that this is already almost a decade old
Yeah, that one was really fast
😆
Atleast you had ten years of enjoying it. I’m only binging now !
For real. Seems like yesterday was moving into my old house and me and my roommate turned our detached garage into a beat laboratory lol. A lot of fuckin deafheaven and attack attack, and drugs 🙄
been thinking about this lately.. it gives me goosebumps
This is great. Why so many haters? This is a fucking awesome Black Metal album with a pink cover.
+necrosatanico NOT BM
Scumbath It has the shrieks, the guitar tone, the drumming, the speed. Sorry. It is Black Metal.
It is black metal. Just take away the riffs in most black metal songs, replace them with shoegazy guitars but keep the vocals and drums as they were. It's called blackgaze. Black metal and shoegaze. It is definitely black metal.
this is not black metal
@@Zachodd It is. Sorry.

+Esteban Aguayo that doesnt mean he's being ripped off. music is made from mixes of different kinds of genres. This can be a new genre which is amazing
+En Berlin Blink 182 is pretty punk dude , just because you don't like something doesn't mean that it's bad or doesn't fit into a certain category.
+En Berlin what exactly makes them not punk in your views?
I took a nap at a Nine Inch Nails concert once, it was quite comfortable honestly
what?
Same but it was megadeth
Whoa dude. You're crazy.
@@ivangalindo5729 nice dude. I took a nap at a Sunn O))) concert by some of the amps. Fuzzy lullabies.
how dare you
In Clarke’s words:
Like, on “Dream House”, that conversation is really a conversation I had with this girl I was totally in love with. I was really hammered one night and was texting her, like, “How are you?” She’s like, “I’m dying.” And I was like, “Is it blissful?” She said, “like a dream.” And I said, “I want to dream.“ It sounded nice at the time. So I wrote that text conversation down, and two years later, when I was working on that song, I thought it fit because it sums up the contrast between this big, beautiful ending and this big, tragic ending.
Oh no, a black metal band trying something new!!!!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhh it's so scary!
If by new you mean something that has been done several years prior to Deafheaven existing, and was also done better, then yea.

This isn't quite Black metal. This is Black metal mixed with "shoegaze". It's a "BlackGaze" genre. Black metal in major chords mixed with punk, essentially.
+Zenny
Wolves in the Throne Room and Alcest. Try Two Hunters and Le Secret by them respectively, the last one invented the genre of blackgaze basically
@@TheSchoolyD I know them and I love every Alcest release so far, sunbather is still unique and beautiful in its own way

People on forums can get a bit militant about their niche interests haha. If you haven't already, check out the bands Alcest and Agalloch. You may find something you like in their respective sounds
bozbontins Also, you might like Liturgy's albums Aesthetica and Renihilation and Wolves in the Throne Room's Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog.

I can just imagine a teen in his youth running towards his dreams with this song. He went through pain and grief to get to this moment but now he feels free chasing his dreams. This song doesn’t feel sad or angry. It feels inspiring and uplifting. A coming of age feel to it.

Actually it's Post Black Metal mixed with Shoegaze called "Blackgaze" and yes it's supposed to be peaceful :)
I wouldn't consider this as black metal. More shoegaze with black metal influences
I don't listen to a lot of metal but this seriously intrigues me. It's beautifully triumphant, like someone emerging from bitter loss and stepping into a new day. Kudos Deafheaven, you just gained a new fan.
@@CambrianAnomalocaris not kvlt enough for you, eh?

triumphant is a great word. i told my friend it sounds like the narrator is a crow in a storm and telling my story

Metal fans always crack me up. ( Before i go any further I would like to state that I am a metal fan and that metal has always been my first port of call when it comes to music, but i think the following needs saying). So many of you sit around complaining about how modern music is crap and that the typical music fan won't embrace the more extreme style and that mainstream music just doesn't get it, blah blah. Then when a heavy band like Deafheaven start to gain some critical acclaim you stroke your beards in disapproval because other people may have heard of them and actually enjoy it, but you're mostly annoyed because you like something other people like.
HAIL SANTA!!
Music is only good if it is metal from an album with less than 30 sales worldwide. If you listen to anything else you're a poser.
@Andre Some people just think their opinions are better than others.
Metalheads are drama queens lol
this song is absolute bliss.

When I got into this band, it was like adopting an adorable rabid demon friend. It's pretty awesome.
MyGracely thats accurate
Is anyone familiar with rainshine? It's when the sun is out and there are blue skies but it's also raining. That's the feeling this song gives me.
Its like a bunch of 90's alternative/grunge musicians playing metal. Like if you made Mineral write a metal album. This is fantastic.

I used to listen to classic Norwegian black metal as a teen (Emperor, Satyricon, Gehenna, Limbonic Art were some of my favs) but now, 12 yars laters, i re-discover this extreme metal that has become something entirely different and beautiful in its own right. Suprised that extreme metal artists have discovered post-rock like Mogwai, GY!BE, Sigur Ros, Explosions in The Sky and some Shoegaze creating this lushness of sound. If you like this, try Altar of Plagues and Year of No Light as well.

Everyone complaining about metal elitists and hate comments when it took me nearly an hour to find a single one. Classic music fans, always freaking out over something that isn't there
it's actually quite visible on the whole album video if you sort by newest comments, about like 25% of the comments are calling it poser black metal. if it's poser though i'd gladly take poser black metal over whatever "real" black metal may be. also nice evangelion pfp

I only JUST discovered this band thanks to my friend. I really don't understand why people care what genera this is so much. All that matters to me is that this is good music. That's all that should matter. I find people who purposely try to find the negative in everything good rather depressing.
NucaCola It's just that the black metal scene is one of the most close minded, purist categories within metal fandom (and that's saying a lot). So it's pretty much impossible to have music like this without a ton of people bitching about it.
***** That's not really what he's talking about, though. Certainly black metal has an element of hipsterdom to it (which is no doubt why hipsters were attracted to it in the first place, you never see Pitchfork talking about death metal), just that you should be weary of anyone trying to pass this off as more pure black metal. The band themselves acknowledge that they're in a much different place musically.
No one's making a value judgment (even if he is acting like kind of an autist), just saying that this is where the distaste is coming from. Some people don't like that metal of any sort is gentrified or corporatized, and there's nothing wrong with that at all.
WayToTheGrave I don't think I've ever seen anyone pass this off as pure Black Metal, it's obviously quite different from bands like Burzum, Emperor, etc. I've only ever seen people call it Blackgaze.
At the end of the day, I don't really care if there is posers in the scene, it's a massive waste of time trying to deter them, so I might as well focus on enjoying the music and sharing it with likeminded people. Besides, once something new and hip comes along they'll just jump onto that instead, leaving the true fans to enjoy the music.
***** Lol wut. Did you even read his comment, I mean what the fuck.
CasualPoster What the fuck even, TBDM has nothing to do with black metal
This never gets old. It's got the kind of melody and emotional force behind it that'll bring you to tears every time. It's like I'm in this wash of notes that picks you apart, exposes your raw feelings and leaves nothing but joy and a tinge of bitter-sweet melancholy.
It's beautiful.
Thanks sewerslvt

Maybe i’m overanalyzing but with the “I’m dying, i want to dream” lyrics i always imagine like a robot and a human having a conversation, while the human is dying
The robot wants to be human to experience dreaming and even the bad parts like death
That riff at 1:33 is ripping my damn heart out
Mind blowing music. Truly moving. I love their vibe...so dark...but it's almost as if there is a faint glimmer of hope in their music. Captivating.

Not so sound corny or anything but the first time I heard this song it was like somebody had made my soul into music. I have never resonated with a song more in my entire life.

Not really a metal fan, but, GOOD LORD, this song is one of the most potently emotional experiences I've had listening to music. It's completely and absolutely devastating.
I’ve always found this song beautiful.
I think this is wonderful. There are so many new Post Black Metal artists on the rise and these guys definitely stand out among the masses. This song has been an amazing journey. Many thanks to the uploader!
Ive been into metal since I was 11. and now listen to a few new bands once in a while. This is actually pretty good
It actually reminds me of old school bm for some strange reason
This whole album is a masterpiece. Defiant pink portrait for a dark scene. This song in particular, it's like an explosion of wrath and rage that ends in sadness. The next song, matches perfectly.
I love to listen to this music laid on the roof of my house at night. Looking at the stars, it makes me miss people that I lost. My mom, my brother...
It took me a long time to get here, but I'm glad I finally did.
Average Dream fan vs. Average Dream House enjoyer.
it warms my heart to know the N64 went on to bigger and better things.
There's basically no other song that makes me feel this good.
I don't think I've ever heard a song more frustrated sounding than this. I love it. It feels like needing to release all your negative emotions through music.
The calm of higher magnitude :
Typically one would asociate the word calm with piano, river's flowing water or rain, it has countless representations, countless countless, yet mine would be a calmness of higher magnitude, one with so much noise it turns back into silence, too many colors eventually fading into whitness, aweird kind of calmness.
It is enjoyable.
I've always had a tough time trying to keep up with Screams an Growls in metal. But, I think Deafheaven did it to a higher extent with the vocal distortion. It was an artistic move. The screams of this song, is meant to be illiterate to hear, at least I suppose so. But its purely the SOUND of it; the screams themselves are an instrument. It sets a mood, I don't feel agony or self pity at all during this track. If anything. I feel at peace. And the fact that it sounds absolutely GORGEOUS live at Kings (Raleigh, NC). The crowd made the song just THAT much more immersing. This song is a masterpiece in my opinion. But then again, almost all atmospheric metal is masterful, esp; DSBM, Atmospheric Black Metal, Atmospheric Folk Metal (to set some examples) And that moment of silence.... Such an extremely powerful moment... I loved this song from beginning to en- actually... I wish this song was longer.... wow...
This song feels like chasing my dreams. I listen to it everyday in hopes I can one day achieve fulfillment.
Never did I think I'd find music with screaming beautiful...
This is so beautiful
