244: Haolonggood Apatosaurus (2023) Review

  • It is hard to believe, for a sauropod lover, that this isn’t a dream. First, Rebor hits us with not one but two variants of its 1:35 Diplodocus. Then Haolonggood, not satisfied with resting on its laurels, follows up immediately with its 1:35 Apatosaurus.
    Done not just with its usual sculpt and paint standard, with plenty of detail and complexity you will discover only on keen inspection, but it’s a much needed update to my ancient Carnegie Apatosaurus. The powerful beauty of this animal is wonderfully brought out, with a gait that shows grace with ponderosity in a beautiful juxtaposition that will please any dinosaur, and especially sauropod, collector.

    Great review, you have a brilliant attention to detail and your manner of explaining things is on point. I can tell how much you appreciate dinosaurs, just like me. This model is beautiful, I can easily imagine this animal walking across a fern prairie, feeding with other members of its herd and using that tail whip possibly for communication. Of course, also keeping watch for predators like allosaurs and ceratosaurus.

    Congratulations for your greek pronunciation. Most americans would get it wrong, but I guess that's the advantage for the people who speak more than one language. Also I love how your videos are packed with information about the accuracy of the model.

      @DinosDragons  Рік тому +1

      Wow thank you my friend! I have a love for languages, and I also want to respect the language as much as I can, so I try. Although some would argue that a bad effort might be more offensive than no effort at all 🤣
      Greek is one of the hardest languages I have tried to learn. My main challenge being digraphs and similar to Russian, you have similar lettters in the alphabet that are pronounced differently.
      Thank you for liking the additional information. It's something I wanted to have for my videos which I hope will help people appreciate their models more, but of course I'm continually learning, and sometimes I might get things wrong. If you like the scientific stuff, be sure to check out my description, where I add errata as viewers point them out to me, or references you might find interesting for further reading. 😁

    I'm amazed by the skin texture Haolonggood has archieved, pretty much identical to PNSO.
    By the way, I always watch your videos for reference in pose, musculature and science backup for my handmade scultures since I don't own any of these figures. My current proyect is an Apatosaurus in 1:35 scale that only needs me to sculpt individual scales all over its body and paint it; the rest is all done and made with almost no reference on other figures. After watching this review, I can gladly say that my version of this animal (my favorite sauropod) is very accurate. Mine's got also a muscular neck, however the base of it is more straight and less curved, also featuring a fleshier head, and a flatter torso.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому

      I think they certainly have done very well! Their previous offerings I would say are still a distance off from PNSO, but _this_ one... fantastic! They are really very close and I am very excited to see what else they have to offer.
      It's great that you can sculpt your own figures. Indeed, doing that lets you create what you want. For accuracy, papers and journal articles are invaluable. I suggest you check out any osteology paper on which ever future dinosaur you wish to sculpt. Also, ask Dr Taylor or Wedel their opinion. I'm sure they're happy to give input!
      Put your Apatosaurus up on your channel when you've completed it. I'd love to see it! 😀😀

      I actually do like patterns and in fact, that's one thing I feel EoFauna could have done better with its Giganotosaurus. But especially for larger animals, I like them subtle. That's why I love EoFauna's Atlasaurus. There are layers of subtlety there that aren't vulgarly obvious. So too for this HLG gray. The orange version I didn't like because I didn't feel it for such a huge animal. And yes, I think that the grey will definitely contrast with the W Dragon Giraffatitan more!

Just like you, I'm not a huge fan of flashy sauropods. Not only sauropods but all the dinosaurs. It's just my opinion. I have nothing bad to say against these Haolonggood figures. But the only thing I find a bit more upsetting is their 'mouths'. I would love to see them release some open-mouth figures in the future. So I hope they will try that with their Theropod figures. Again, this is the best Apatosaurus figure I've ever seen, and I hope I'll be able to get it someday. Keep up the amazing work, my dear sir. You are the best.

    Thank you for another great video! This one I was excited for cause it's a 1/35 scale sauropod, and it looks like Haolonggood didn't disappoint! I would have gone for the gray version too, so I'm glad that was featured.
    I was also wondering what the growths on the underside of its neck were, I thought they were the inflatable sacks shown on the Dreadnoughtus in Prehistoric Planet, but now I have my answer.
    Can't wait to see what's next from them (maybe a stegosaur??)! Will you be purchasing/reviewing the new Cameron the T.rex from PNSO?

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому

      Actually, who knows exactly what those growths were! You could think of them as those sacs too if you wish, since they don't seem to coincide exactly with where I think the tubercles would be, plus as you can see there are multiple rows of them 🤔

      Yes indeed it's a little bit of a pity that HLG does have some misses here and there but so have other companies. And actually the snout is something that can be easily overlooked, or you could just tell yourself it's all the keratin! 🤣 But the general form of it is beautiful that I think we can overlook that in time. 1:35 being such a rarity for you especially! 🤣

  • @TITANSofTheEARTH
    @TITANSofTheEARTH Рік тому +1

    Very nice model.
    More pleasing than diploducus for my taste.
    For very nice fitting 19:26 in size.
    Especially that they made the triangula neck construction...(what is perfect at the sideshow apatosaurus)...and very good at this one.
    Without this anatomical structure, necks that long would not work at all.
    I also think that like giraffes, the strong ones automatically hold their heads up and the sauropod had to tense muscles to lower it to drink... That makes more sense.
    :D

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому +1

      Actually, I have read some literature (can't recall now) that suggests that the ligamentous structure would probably be such that their neutral positions would require the least exertion of muscular effort, as they would already grant it some passive stability. Makes perfect sense that movements out of that neutral envelope need muscular effort, not the positions they are most constantly holding.
      I also prefer this one to the Rebor Diplodocus. There's just something about it that takes you in.

    This turned out to be pretty much as you described. It is a very good representation for the price with the flaws noted.
    Mine had what I consider to be a very lackluster paint application that I had already planned on correcting.
    Someone was very sleepy that day, maybe.
    But, having ordered it from Aliexpress, I expected a “seconds” item anyhow.
    The eyes are very poorly painted but, again, I was intending on a repaint including the eyes.
    The separation of the rear feet as they connect to the lower leg is a little bothersome but not as much as the muscle atrophy in the upper thigh region.
    The head sculpt holds little appreciable mouth detail but can be influenced with a good dark wash.
    And, as to the mouth region, I noticed what looked like a serious attempt of including a “beak” with just a hint of indentation just even with the premaxilla(?) portion of the upper jaw.
    If so, two thumbs up on that one.
    Just a hint but I found it interesting.
    Regardless of any of the “negatives”, I was very pleased by this figure.
    HLG is producing figures that, hopefully, will continue to progress.
    They’re not at a PNSO level of accuracy but they are still worthy of attention.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому

      Yikes, you mean yours isn't painted like what I showed in the video? If so that sucks 😥 I was even expecting that in hand the models would look better than the video since my camera didn't pick up some of the most subtle details. It's a little disturbing if even on the first production run some QC issues might happen 🤔
      I was thinking, that rear foot separation could possibly be filled in by someone who can mod figures, and since the paint is relatively conservative, touched up again quite easily.
      I had considered that it might have been an attempt at a beak, but thought in the end it was more like a droopy lip. I woudn't be surprised though; quite a few renditions of that, including IIRC the PNSO Mamenchisaurus and the Wild Safari Camarasaurus.
      HLG is definitely one to watch. For the tripod of sculpted detail, paint application and scientific accuracy, I would imagine the easiest to improve on would be scientific accuracy. The other two they already have done pat. Actually I should consider adding a fourth leg to the model.. PRICE. And for that, HLG is way ahead. I suspect that HLG will quickly become many people's favourite _if_ they can keep it all up!

    • @thomasmonroe7947
      @thomasmonroe7947 Рік тому

      @@DinosDragons I would agree. HLG, if they can continue the momentum and follow through similarly with any future offerings, will be contenders for collectors attention (and $) going forward.
      The paint job on mine wasn’t horrible but there did seem to be a lacking in most areas and the eyes just didn’t appeal to me.
      The figure itself is quite good.
      And I do not mind having to create my own interpretation or additions to existing paint work.
      I am considering doing some putty work to reduce the obvious foot/leg separation but it will have to wait.
      Full plate, right now.

  • @ArawnsFire
    @ArawnsFire Рік тому +1

    Adaptations geared towards socio-sexual display is the default explanation for most distinguishing characteristics. I do prescribe to an alternative speculation ;
    With so many sauropods inhabiting the same environment during the same geological age perhaps those robustly adapted necks served in a specialized feeding capacity. Just as African Elephants use their foreheads to fell trees perhaps Apatosaurs and Brontosaurus specialized in forest engineering clearing wide swaths of forest and creating habitats for other creatures. While getting access to the newer shoots of juvenile trees. Their range I could imagine as a enormous clearing bordering the tall groves of mature giant trees where the saplings are constantly toppled in an enormous circle so that by the time herds completed one rotation the trees where they began would be at the perfect height for harvesting. Of course, every adaptation has multiple uses and I may be completely off key with my presumptions. The hues I do find very nostalgic, harkening back to every book I cherished as a child and even to the giant deluxe sauropod figures from a line of action toys called Dino-Riders from the 1980’s.

    I have a question. Why do some companies actually produce these large figures in parts which are then fused together rather than just making them in one piece? If I see this correctly, the PNSO Lingwulong is in one piece, as is the Nanmu Brachiosaurus. Also the very old Schleich Apatosaurus is in one piece as far as I can see. So obviously it is possible and this would avoid these seams which sometimes are well covered by the paint, but sometimes not so well. My Haloggood Apatosaurus that came today is quite OK in this respect. You can see the seam between the body and the neck, but it is not very obvious. The one between the body and the tail is almost invisible. The colors on my copy are really amazing, with some browns mixed in the gray and some of the gray having even a slightly metallic look, resembling a bit of the silver backs of old gorillas. Obviously the skin of reptiles is a different story from the skin of mammals, but still it gives the impression of this large Apatosaurus having aged and the skin looking accordingly.

    • @DinosDragons
      @DinosDragons  Рік тому

      That's a question with a complex answer. Many times, a lot of factors go into this decision, such as the manufacturing method, the materials, and how detailed you want the figure to be from every angle.
      Some designs might be 3D printed, though I don't think this applies for mass-produced large scale models like if you want to preserve a lot of the detail.
      For mass production generally, it's easier to produce different parts, and then put them together. In different parts, it might be easier to create higher level of sculpted detail on often inaccessible areas, even smaller ones. This also works better for complex poses with awkward joints to ensure more aspects are sculpted to the same quality.
      And of course for articulation, you know that there will have to be some seams.
      This is just based on my superficial understanding of the behind-the-scenes processes. There is a channel called *Jurassic Plastic* I highly suggest you try writing the channel creator. He is extremely knowledgeable in these matters.

    This looks like an updated version of safari’s apatosaurus

      Indeed. Even the colour is an echo of that one!

    What species of Apatosaurus is this figure depicting? A. ajax or A. louisae?

    Holaa, alguna idea de lo q pesa el paquete con el dino

      Lamentablemente no. Ya no tengo la caja. Pero el modelo en sí pesa 1 kg (2,2 lb) y la caja con espuma de poliestireno habría sido un poco más pesada. Si estás pensando en los costos de envío, sospecho que el gran problema será el volumen.

    They failed to give it claws on the front feet. That's rather disappointing.

      What do you mean? This one has thumb claws.

    I’m surprised you don’t have the Nanmu Studio Apatosaurus.

      I didn't really like the sculpt, and I try to limit my JPesque dinosaurs to only a few that mean the most to me. At that time too, I was also saving up for a dragon and it was an either-or thing for me 😪

      @@DinosDragons Thank you for your input, I understand. To me, their Apatosaurus seemed to be a more affordable option of the Slideshow Collectibles Apatosaurus statue. The sculpt seemed to follow closely with the heavily muscled reconstructions of Apatosaurus, especially the neck. The feet are also mostly accurate. Though, the skin texture could be better with more individual scales sculpted and the skull could use some adjustments. The overall body shape also reflects some reconstructions, as well as the presence of a whip-like tail. At 1:35 scale, it aligns well with size estimates of A. ajax that suggest a length 11-30% longer than average, reaching a subsequent upper weight limit exceeding that famous 30 tonne figure. I have both the Haolonggood and Nanmu Apatosaurus, and I personally like to regard the Haolonggood as a typical representation of A. louisae since its size at 1:35 scale correlates closely with it. I couldn’t find any information stating which species it is intended to be though. Weights of 16-23 tonnes are mostly associated with A. louisae as well. Both of these models contrast well together to appreciate the range of size between what I believe to be two different species of this genus. Nonetheless, I do appreciate your feedback! Please continue with your fantastic content as you always do!

      @@Nate-1244 Thank you for your detailed analysis Mat! It's been a long time since I looked at the Nanmu, and I might go checkout the reviews and see if my supplier still has any stock. From what you write I believe the feet might have been a major reason I didn't get it; as a sauropod lover I'm a foot fetishist that way... or more accurately, I am a hand fetishist! 😁Though to be honest, I don't know if I can afford it. I am sure you can tell based on HLG's tease of upcoming sauropods at 1:35 that I'm in danger of heading towards bankruptcy! 🤣

      @@DinosDragons You make a valid point on the feet. If I’m being completely honest, they did a better job on the back feet than the front. The front could use some improvement. Overall though, Haolonggood takes the sculpt detail category off the charts.
