Notice how the audience is talking at the beginning and by the two minute mark Alfie has the audience totally with him. That is a mark of a great performance. The applause at the end was well-deserved. Bravo Alfie. Well done!
Mary Jane, I see we are still following each other around the Alfie clips! :) I love hearing him sing modern music but honestly, nobody does classical like this man. I've lost track of how many versions of Nessun Dorma I've listened to and my favorites will always be Luciano Pavarotti and Alfie Boe!
If you heard Alfie's story, Alfie had an operatic voice but knew early on, he wanted to explore. As a young lad, his father played so many different types of music and I believe Elvis as well. Don't quote me on Elvis, but Alfie knew more music but his God given voice started out as opera. What a gift from heaven. Wish I was this mature in music 30 years ago, I would have saved every dime to go to London, West End. Learning so much from all of your comments.
Wow. Just... WOW. I never thought a performance could come anywhere close to Domingo/Carreras/Pavarotti singing this as a trio, but WOW. Alfie Boe is a genuinely stunning tenor, and even the shrieky soprano incapable of blending in the chorus cannot detract from my absolute awe! From the moment I first heard him sing, I thought "I need to hear him sing Nessun Dorma"- thank you SO much for uploading this!
I absolutely love him wish i could go see him one day and just think nobody knew about him until he did les mis im glad he did so prople over in the usa can hear his amazing voice
He was, actually, very well known in the Opera Circuit - but we all know how small and elitist that crowd is. Alfie's desire to just sing good music and to make Opera accessible to all is wonderful.
My wife and I were at this concert. This was crisp, perfect, passionate and far and away the best version of this I've ever heard. I'm over the moon to have found this recording.
I think much credit should be given to this fine young singer, Lets give him 10 years and see what happens. After all is said and done, I hope he is not a transient voice. He has too much talent to settle for that. But lets see what he makes of himself. I hope for all the best for this superbly talenlted voice.
I too like Placido Domingo, but Boe was wonderful in Les Miserables - I saw the 25th anniversary progam - and of course Nessun Dorma is from one of my favorite operas - I am an opera fan -
You talk about hitting "the notes" as if that's the only thing. Alfie may not have the huge tenor voice others have, but he has a sense of the phrasing, the lyrics, the emotions I never get from other tenors. They're busy showing off the notes. Even if you don't know squat about Turandot, with Alfie you know there's a story there. That's why I consider him one of the world's best tenors.
He did opera first, after his training was finished, but has discovered after a few years that he still loves to do modern and Broadway (or West End) just as much, so kind of goes back and forth depending on what is offered to him--he does all extremely well!
As has been said, classically trained, but got his big break with 25th Les Mis anniversary at 02 where he just killed it. Has been able to do pretty much what he wanted since then. Saw him in his Les Mis tour in West End. Phenomenal. He may not be Pavarotti, but he does lots of things that Pavarotti couldn't and we still have Alfie.
Not according to the original score, NG; that phrase occurs several times during the course of the aria, and every time the note is shown as F#. NOT F rising to F#.
LOVED Alfie in Les Mis; was looking forward to hearing him in opera. In this he hits all the notes very well indeed. The low notes are very good and the high notes are sensational! But this role is not really for his voice. It's for a heroic tenor (Corelli, Del Monaco et al) while his voice is lyric. So he seems to aim for a popular audience. UA-cam has much better examples of him singing opera. Try his Pearlfishers and Brindisi.
@koalasarah Me myself personally, I like Domingo's phrasing a tad better. Pavarotti is more powerful but Boe certainly is a more than worthy successor to their position as worlds best tenors.
The man has a cracking voice and a great delivery; however I take the comment about him being "rooted to the spot" - I can understand that might upset some people. My only criticism would be that he never seems to hit the note first time; he tends to go to one tone below, then lift into the right pitch. Maybe he prefers that - his style, if you like, but I prefer to hear the note first time.
@clintoginaire Since this was posted almost 3 yrs ago, you're a little late to the party. Perhaps you should check out Alfie currently. (Maybe "Alfie Boe warbles a bit". He sings Nessun Dorma to karaoke in Matt Lucas' kitchen. Yes, in a kitchen! Stunning.) Oh, and as a Yank, I find your "vowels become very American ("eh" becoming "ae" which doesn't exist," a tad annoying. How dare we have a different accent!
I think what I love most about this is that Alfie did NOT oversing it as so many other tenors do. Bravo!
the best voice on the planet. nuff said. x
Great singing Alfie!! Love your voice!!
Can't wait to see Alfie in Les Mis in August, he is the best Tenor I have ever heard, just incredible :-)
Notice how the audience is talking at the beginning and by the two minute mark Alfie has the audience totally with him. That is a mark of a great performance. The applause at the end was well-deserved. Bravo Alfie. Well done!
Yes!

I was there when he sung this!! I was right in the front, it was the last thing me and my dad did together
Sing me lullabies, oh sweet tenor! There are no words.

57Strudel, as long as Alfie keeps singing, I will keep listening. My favorites are also Luciano and Alfie! :)
OMG! What a magnificant voice!!!
Excellent high note at the end!
And that's not even the top of his range... Think about that.
Narrator: Nessun Dorma - None shall sleep tonight
Nope, not a one of us is sleeping after that....
I absolutely love him wish i could go see him one day and just think nobody knew about him until he did les mis im glad he did so prople over in the usa can hear his amazing voice

Alan Ford was my 87
..fantastic performance...top class...i am impressed.
He has a brilliant voice, but I also think that the audience were ignorant and obviously did not appreciate what a wonderful performance he gave.
At first -- but then they got quiet and started to listen. They heard the voice!!
Exactly what I thought! 😐
this man is flawless!!
amazing voice = a REAL singer!!!!
Anytime I have the chance to listen to Alfie, it is a privledge
First note, last note. Forthtright. Passionate.
So many great tenors have sung it this way that it barely matters, does it? There IS room for interpretation in every piece of music.
OUTSTANDING!!!
He is phenomenal!

He is not a transient voice, but full and glorious.

Excellent.
Quite agree with the neg comments re chorus. Fortunately Alfi Boe is brilliant, Thank you Alfi.
Gad, this is from 2008? He just keeps getting better and better!!
awesome
1. This is how the music was written.
2. This is how Pavarotti sang.
Bravo!!!!

perfect nessun dorma!
@DannyZoro34
Listen to Franco Corelli's version. If Pav's version is likened to a shotgun, Corelli's version is a rocket launcher.
He's incredible.
Excellent!
No words.
MAJESTIC.
I was there when he sung this!
I'm jealous - 10 years late, but still jealous.
Translated the tense of the verb.... it means "Let no one sleep...."
cool

That's why I consider him one of the world's best tenors.
Wouldn't it be great if Alfie Boe and Russell Watson could get together and sing as the "Lancashire Tenors".
Did alfie boe once consider opera or classical music singing over pop and musical theatre?
He did opera first, after his training was finished, but has discovered after a few years that he still loves to do modern and Broadway (or West End) just as much, so kind of goes back and forth depending on what is offered to him--he does all extremely well!

the audience just didnt give a crap... Fantastic voice....
Brilliant voice! I hope he does not ruin his instrument. Good legato!
@CaptainLynn109 gotta agree with that
This recording has a lot of talking on it and is very jumpy. The talking is disrespectful to the people and the music.
LOVED Alfie in Les Mis; was looking forward to hearing him in opera.

all I will say is "WOW"
@toydog16r What an experience for you!
@koalasarah Me myself personally, I like Domingo's phrasing a tad better. Pavarotti is more powerful but Boe certainly is a more than worthy successor to their position as worlds best tenors.
Are you kidding was there like 2 people in the audience? If not how snobby can / rude can you get? He's amazing.
I pressed the Like button...then realized I had already pressed it once.
Not a huge voice but still a beautiful Tenor with fine phrasing
The man has a cracking voice and a great delivery; however I take the comment about him being "rooted to the spot" - I can understand that might upset some people. why the effing hell do we need adverts ...........omg
Absolutely beautiful! but not even close to Pavarotti. NOT. EVEN. CLOSE.
Calm down dude
for sure he's better than all of us here commenting in this video..
*****
I just woke up, and too tired read you your comment. you just lost 30 cal for nothing.
No. He's WAY better!
That some of Alfie Boe fans, offer them with Pavarotti at the same level, telling me all about the immense musical knowledge of fools
I like him better with a beard.
il à certes une jolie voix de ténor léger mais rien à voir dans cette air avec Pavarotti ne pas faire de comparaison please .
Let the Pavarotti/Boe comparisons begin (I'm not really a Pavarotti fan, I like Placido Domingo better). Alfie Boe is the best tenor I've heard yet.
he sings really good, but move your arms or something... very still :s
Wow. The chorus is terrible, but Alfie does a great job with this very difficult aria.
As if anyone can really tell with this poorly recorded clip.
Zero Feelings,
Better than Paul Potts.

He is not for Nessun dorman
il coretto è terribile.....
