I don't know, people always say that about actors who play disabled, as well as about actors like Philip Seymour Hoffman and William H Macy who play 'losers'. What's so great about his performance? He just sits still and stares a lot, unlike Tom Cruise who plays a more complex character.

That's because players are not supposed to win, or better the random player can score a lucky streak and that's good for the rep and work of the casino because it pushes the other players to play and loose more. But nobody is supposed to win big money with a constant flux of wins in a multi hour period, that's simply against the odds on which the entire betting floor is tweaked on. the casino is a rip-off per se, the house always wins, it's designed and run that way using complex statistics and math. All you see inside a casino is paid by the player's losses, wins are just a deacon.
It was one crazy night in Reno. I think I had depleted their vodka and redbull supplies. But I always tipped the waitress so she kept them coming, and always tipped the dealers whenever I won. Nope - just incredible cinematography, the perfect cuts and camera angles, to capture the actors' key subtleties and expressions just as they happen. THAT is the skill which movie makers just don't have anymore.
The acting, cinematography and music in this scene are just perfection. I don't know how any of them could've been done better. Love the juxtaposition of Raymond/Charlie and the lights, buzzers, etc. of a casino. Very accurate with it being a constant hub of activity. The card counting stuff was over dramatized and they likely would've been flat bet (can't raise or lower bets beyond one single amount) or backed off (asked to not play blackjack) before the later stages of this scene and even when this movie was made, casinos knew there were people who absolutely could count a six deck shoe accurately. Also, Raymond would know there are a lot of 10's left in the deck but couldn't predict the next two cards & the dealer's downcard would be a Queen and the two of them talking out loud in front of the dealer and then Raymond getting it correct would've set off all kinds of red flags. These are minor nitpicks in an overall outstanding scene from an outstanding movie
The original production plan of the film's stars: *Dustin Hoffman as 56-year-old Charlie Babbitt* (was originally hired to play the part of Charlie Babbitt whom the character was originally an old man in the script, but after being moved to tears seeing a savant named Leslie Lemke who is blind, mentally handicapped, and has cerebral palsy play full concertos on the piano by ear, he decided to play the part of Raymond Babbitt instead.) *Bill Murray as Raymond Babbitt* (After Dustin Hoffman decided to play the part of Raymond Babbitt instead, he wanted Bill Murray for the role of Charlie.) *Tom Cruise as 26-year-old Charlie Babbitt* (Paula Wagner, an agent at CAA where Tom Cruise was represented, suggested that the Charlie role should be the brother who is 30 years younger instead of being depicted as the older brother and it should be Cruise for the role. Years later, they would be producing partners at Cruise/Wagner Productions.)
Fun Fact: Dustin Hoffman was originally hired to play the part of Charlie Babbitt whom the character was originally 56-years-old in the script, but after being moved to tears seeing a savant named Leslie Lemke (who is blind, mentally handicapped, and has cerebral palsy) play full concertos on the piano by ear, he decided to play the part of Raymond Babbitt instead. The dealer is Nick Mazzola, who also played a blackjack dealer in Casino. Despite his deadpan expression, he was a really nice guy. Rest in peace, Nick.
I thought so! Glad I read through the comments sectiom before posting. He was the guy who Joe Pesci flipped a King of Clubs at, and it stuck to his shirt. "Ooooh look at this beaut! Take this card and pound it up your ass". Just brutal. And yes Mazzola was absolutely deadpan. LOL!
When you lose money, the casino crooks are only too happy to take them. But, Heavens forbid you start winning, the do every in their power to stop you from playing. I won once 2000 at slots in Vegas, I was treated like a criminal, before they paid my winning. The whole gaming industry is the disgusting trash.
Fun fact: the blackjack dealer is the same guy who was dealing blackjack in Casino when Joe Pescis character went nuts and started throwing chips at him and insulting him
Also fun fact: that dealer worked the tables when the real life Tony Spilotro would skulk around Vegas. He said as mean as Pesci's character was in Casino, Spilotro was way worse.
I don't think you have much experience in a casino. Dealers love it when you win, because you're much more likely to tip when your winning. People never tip when they are losing.
This entire soundtrack is highly underrated. The songs don't necessarily stand out on their own, nor have they endured in pop culture, but each one really is the perfect selection for what's needed in the scene.
For the very first time I realised that the Blackjack dealer in Rain Man is the same dealer from Casino. Pretty cool. I never forget a face.

I meant DECOY.
did you get to keep the money
Alex Bernhardt
yes :)
It was one crazy night in Reno. I think I had depleted their vodka and redbull supplies. But I always tipped the waitress so she kept them coming, and always tipped the dealers whenever I won. By the time I made it to the car, my designated driver had gotten a good night's sleep. But yeah, the security guys sniffed me over like narcotics hounds. I thought they came to make sure I leave safely--nope. They were making sure I didn't cheat.
One of the greatest movies of all time , love rain man.
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
One of the greatest scenes in a superb movie!
Never get tired of watching this clip
Definitely a top favorite for me. Just phenomenal interaction between the two top stars❤
Brilliant smoking from an actor who doesn’t smoke. 10/10
The music that they play while he is winning is so perfect, it makes you get goosebumps. it's dark lol
Someone once told me it was Sisters Of Mercy's "This Corrosion" used in this sequence: another illusion shattered, it wasn't!
the music to me is saying money is the root of all evil and is destroying the meaningful relationship Charlie could be having with his brother if he wasn't so self focused.
That's because it's a Hans Zimmer piece. He the guy who scored the Batman trilogy, inception, interstellar, pirates of the carribean and too many classics to list!
Frank Dux zimmer has a lot to answer for
@@thiscorrosion900 I was going to say: as soon as the song started playing I was like "Woah that's Sisters Of Mercy"! Scrolled down to read the comments to see if anyone could confirm... Are you sure it's not? It sounds JUST like them...!
I like Dustin Hoffman
I watched this "Rainman" over and over again, over and over again!
Great movie. Great actors. Great era for cinema and music. UNREPEATEABLE.
Proper acting - no need of special effects - just pure class acting
Nope - just incredible cinematography, the perfect cuts and camera angles, to capture the actors' key subtleties and expressions just as they happen. THAT is the skill which movie makers just don't have anymore.
It's a poker scene. What special effects would any movie use..?
Tom Cruise demanded they use a real casino for this scene. He even held those cards himself, with his own human hands
One of the best scenes in cinema history
That dealer is a real professional...only making pleasant, neutral conversation and dealing with precision, nice tempo, and solid chip cuts.
Yes, but he's still trying to get the 10 card our of his ass that Pesci told him to stick there.
love this great scene from one of my favourite movies and Dustin Hoffman is incredible so is Tom cruise
God bless the 80s!
Best ... Casino scene ... Thank you Dustin ... Thank you Tom ...
Only Hoffman could have pulled that roll off convincingly.
Every damn detail in the mannerisms.
This duo was a casting masterpiece.
Role
You know your short when Tom Cruise towers over you, damn Dustin.
LOL. Not exactly towering over Dustin but damn I didn't know he was shorter than Tom.
FranktheTank70 - and you know you're stupid when you contract YOU ARE to YOUR.
@@markfox1545 Short little Mark Fox
Towering a bit too harshly worded
Great acting all the way around, Cruise & Hoffman great together
This came out when I was in high school, I vividly remember that it was shown in the theaters what seemed like forever.
Jethro Derp I just remember people being like “Rainman is still being shown?!?” It had the record for a while if I am not mistaken.
I am 48 btw.
There isn't a whole lot of actors in Hollywood __ that can out act Dustin Hoffman, but tom cruise __ comes very close.
The original production plan of the film's stars:
*Dustin Hoffman as 56-year-old Charlie Babbitt* (was originally hired to play the part of Charlie Babbitt whom the character was originally an old man in the script, but after being moved to tears seeing a savant named Leslie Lemke who is blind, mentally handicapped, and has cerebral palsy play full concertos on the piano by ear, he decided to play the part of Raymond Babbitt instead.)
*Bill Murray as Raymond Babbitt* (After Dustin Hoffman decided to play the part of Raymond Babbitt instead, he wanted Bill Murray for the role of Charlie.)
*Tom Cruise as 26-year-old Charlie Babbitt* (Paula Wagner, an agent at CAA where Tom Cruise was represented, suggested that the Charlie role should be the brother who is 30 years younger instead of being depicted as the older brother and it should be Cruise for the role. Years later, they would be producing partners at Cruise/Wagner Productions.)
Great acting scene by Dustin Hoffman and the whole movie as well along with Tom Cruse.

Hans Zimmer’s score is phenomenal in this scene/movie. Highly underrated, and is so different from the epics with which people have familiarized him
@Desparaged Asparagus so he’s not one of the best of his generation?
@Desparaged Asparagus lol, how is that his fault
Wish these two would make another movie together because the chemistry between them was electric.
Love dís amazing film but heartbreaking also, dat music is fantastic wen there in the casino, well done 2 these 2 amazing actors, 😄❤️
Dis? Dat?
The dealer is Nick Mazzola, who also played a blackjack dealer in Casino. Despite his deadpan expression, he was a really nice guy. Rest in peace, Nick.
I thought so!
Glad I read through the comments sectiom before posting.
He was the guy who Joe Pesci flipped a King of Clubs at, and it stuck to his shirt. "Ooooh look at this beaut! Take this card and pound it up your ass". Just brutal. And yes Mazzola was absolutely deadpan. LOL!
"Take this stiff, and pound it up your ass. Hit me again."
@@davidcampbell7831Incredible scene!
Look at this beaut they brought in here.
I thought so!!!
Absolute masterpiece of a movie. Timeless
One of the best movies ever produced.
I had forgotten just what a great film this was.
Wonderful performances, by Tom, & Dustin ...great casting choices 🎬
Hoffman and Cruise had incredible chemistry in this film.
This movie is a masterpiece.
"You are beautiful man" LOL!
Best line in the movie.
not bad. but for me it's always been "Rain Man, let's play some cards." I say it just before the lunch rush at work.
Someone who uses LOL will never be able to judge lines.
LOL is for people who hate language.
@@jpgrumbach8562 sad, but true.
jp grumbach Looks like you don't how to judge language then, dickweed.
Only when he found a way to make money off him.
Absolutely beautiful!!..never underestimate a brother..
Even if he's "special".
You’d think that all the noise in the casinos would not fare well with Raymond.
When there are dollars to be made he was in the zone!
It didn’t sound like an airplane crashing so he was cool with the whole scene.
You can tell it does bother him a bit for sure. Just by his gesture @7:31 mark
Fun fact: the blackjack dealer is the same guy who was dealing blackjack in Casino when Joe Pescis character went nuts and started throwing chips at him and insulting him
“Look at this bute they bring in”.
Also fun fact: that dealer worked the tables when the real life Tony Spilotro would skulk around Vegas. He said as mean as Pesci's character was in Casino, Spilotro was way worse.
When a dealer says "I'm happy for you," it's time to cash the fuck out. It's like flight attendants with "See You Next Time."
When a mobster tells you he will see you later
I don't think you have much experience in a casino. Dealers love it when you win, because you're much more likely to tip when your winning. People never tip when they are losing.
What the dealer does is automatic. So he can hope you do well.
@pbdye... Sorry I'm a litlte slow on the flight attendant analogy. Can you elaborate what you mean by that?
@@aaronclareyloveshr6918 It's a play on words. C U...Next Time.
This entire soundtrack is highly underrated. The songs don't necessarily stand out on their own, nor have they endured in pop culture, but each one really is the perfect selection for what's needed in the scene.
Such a good scene; simple shots, well palced.
Love when they come down the escalator looking alike. Love this movie!!
OMG this is 30 years old..................
31 now bubby. Just like me...

I can’t think of many actors that are more charismatic than Tom Cruise on film
It's because hes brainwashed by scientology
Ashton Duda .. and his ego is bigger than the moon
Still my favourite Tom Cruise film.
Masterpiece.
"There's lots of them? Wait a second, wait a second.. I wanna double down." Double down 10 Vs 4 Brilliant just brilliant
Standing ovation to Tom Cruise for his fantastic acting as a neurotypical person!
Great comment, my friend. This is why I like to read youtube comments.
