I have dyspraxia and a mild form of autism. I can remember little things like that too. My mum told me to watch it and I'm so glad I did. I adore this movie.
Yes he was good but when I compare Leonardo dicaprios performance in what's eating Gilbert grape I think it was slightly better. I literally thought he was actually slow in real life.
The restaurant where this was filmed is Pompilio's in Newport, Kentucky. It's still there, but the interior has changed a lot (and they don't allow smoking anymore). Great lasagna and fried ravioli!
If you go to Pompilio's (the restaurant in Newport Kentucky where this was filmed), they have a large bas-relief mural of Raymond and Charlie Babbitt traveling across the country in their Cadillac. Affixed to the portrait are the actual toothpicks that the waitress dropped on the floor and Dustin Hoffman counted.
I'm not a big fan of Cruise but you gotta give it to him and Hoffman in the Rain Man!!! What chemistry, superb acting! It's one of those movies that when your flipping through channels and this is on, you put the remote DOWN!!!!
Its funny to think that I have memory much like this guy's only that I can only remember what I'm interested in and its usually trivia and other academic things. XD Raymond cracks me up.
one of the best scenes in this film aside from the scene in the motel room where charlie's yelling at ray about not going out in the rain and ray's ignoring him, taking notes on the episode of the pyramid he's watching.
Reminds me of my kid... He's not autistic but he has brilliant gifts... Leagues beyond even adults... When he was only 8 years old he took two adult tests and scored 100 percent... Adult tests at 8... I'm into physics - you should see what he knows...
Me... I'm a pattern guy... I solved two questions in seconds that only a handful of people ever solved... I got all 50 questions right on the test and the second last question three people have ever solved them and the last one only one... I also solved a question meant for Mensa people in a way it's never been solved... It was suppose to be solved to a degree of three and I solved it to infinity... The Mensa person I knew tried to solve it for months and never did... She administers the tests... So she gave me a problem people could not solve... Anyway... I love this movie!!! I'm not autistic either but I have my gifts like my kids...
Yes.it was shot in Newport ,Kentucky !! At Pompilios !! I went there for the first time last night when my friends showed me that there was a movie shot there !! And about the toothpick scene . So I just had to watch it !!!
rainman was based on a savant, not an asperger. The character that dustin hoffman plays is based on Kim Peek. (there is a docu on him on youtube). Kim Peek has incredible mnemonic skills.
It's a great thing to teach a valnerable person. Staff Can't get away with abusing him and if everyone knows that he writes then they will think twice with whatever they do
1:02 ray: Tuesday we have pancakes Charlie: Pancakes? ray: Ya with maple syrup Charlie: you bet your butt ray: bet you butt OMG the way ray says it kills me!!!!!!!
best line in this amazing movie is " I don't know" .. so disarming.... [example] : Charlie: So you read all these stories and you don't know if you read the book = I don't know...(VERN). Killer comeback :D
I've only heard of Autistic people who can read really fast and I've heard that some can watch a documentary and repeat big chunks of what they heard from the audio. Tho I don't know and I'm just assuming the issue is that most don't exactly understand what they're repeating, maybe some do I'm not sure but I think it's impressive. I've never met an autistic person before so these stories of em' are kind of like hearing about super heroes. And yeah I know there are people who have photographic memories and there are children who can probably graduate freaking college before highschool but for some reason autistic people are more interesting, I guess because we expect so little and what they do specialize in shines through whatever flaws they possess.
I called Sally and we went shopping for toothpicks. ;-D Probably since this film was released, people have stopped including their last name on their name badges. And how about including their first name in the White Pages--especially women?
Well, the behavior is a little off, but the mental feats are entirely possible. Consider that Kim Peek (that Rainman was based on) had memorized the street map of the entire USA Road Atlas, and Daniel Tammet memorized pi to 25,000+ places. It's not really a far stretch.
How dare Charlie grab Raymond like that. I don't care if he is his brother. No and I mean NO ONE has the right to touch/grab you like that. Especially, if you are handicap. That was just wrong of Charlie.
But he was classified as a savant, whom of which most likely did have autism, but he died before they could diagnose him with it, according to what you have written, that is what have happened to him.
97X, BAM! The future of rock n roll.
haha
THATS ENOUGH RAY!!!
97X, BAM! The future of rock n roll.
Rock and roll has no future.
Sometimes if I get pulled over, I am tempted to just start going "I'm an excellent driver. Of course it's 8 minutes to Wapner"
I have dyspraxia and a mild form of autism. I can remember little things like that too. My mum told me to watch it and I'm so glad I did. I adore this movie.
Dustin Hoffman's performance and accuracy was simply off the chart - in my opinion he is simply one of the best actors in the world. 👍🏼
Yes he was good but when I compare Leonardo dicaprios performance in what's eating Gilbert grape I think it was slightly better. I literally thought he was actually slow in real life.

"Serious injury list" this guy predicted athletics 40 years into the future. 😆
I love the expression on Charlie's face when she says there's 4 left!
One of my favorite movies ever...two amazing actors!
I'm not a big fan of Cruise but you gotta give it to him and Hoffman in the Rain Man!!! What chemistry, superb acting! It's one of those movies that when your flipping through channels and this is on, you put the remote DOWN!!!!
Yes, I think that Cruise was outstanding in this, but maybe part of it was down to the director and his co-star.
"There's four left in the box."
I'd forgotten the "serious injury" book!! :) brilliant
How much my Mom ...watching this with Her...Her laughter...it tickled the shit out of her❤❤❤ The smile on my face right now😂😂😂
Its funny to think that I have memory much like this guy's only that I can only remember what I'm interested in and its usually trivia and other academic things. XD Raymond cracks me up.

one of the best scenes in this film aside from the scene in the motel room where charlie's yelling at ray about not going out in the rain and ray's ignoring him, taking notes on the episode of the pyramid he's watching.
@footycricket was just thinking that. how can he do it so convincingly. nice to know there are some real actors, not just pretty faces

I think that this movie helped launch a lot of research toward Autism.
@MrZOMBIEKID sometimes, raymond (the rain man) sounds like a broken record when he says, "97 x....baaam ...the future of rock n roll.
246 toothpicks on the floor

1 in his hand
= 251 WRONG!
The one in his hand wasn't from the same box
Don't touch that ray, that's Dirty!
