Dale Hawerchuk's passing left a deep impact on the NHL, not just for the sorrow it brought, but also for the surprising estate battle that followed. His legacy on the ice, along with the challenges he faced, like being benched by Mike Keenan, serves as a powerful reminder of his strength.

I have a pretty cool Dale Hawerchuk story. He was my coach at the Saint Andrews hockey school in New Brunswick in 1981 or ’82. I would have been 11 or 12 years old.
Before the big game - the Blue and White game at the end of the week - he gave us a pep talk. He told us he was under strict orders: no double shifting, all the coaches were told they had to roll the lines until the final buzzer, or there would be hell to pay.
The game was tied 1-1, and with 1:32 left, I got a breakaway and scored. When I got back to the bench, he lifted me into the air, and I was on cloud nine.
But in the next 50 seconds, the other team scored twice, and suddenly we were down 3-2. That’s when Dale put his massive arms around our line - we weren’t even due to go back on - and said (and I had never heard a coach swear before):
"I’m going to get in shit, but you guys are going back out there, and you’re going to tie this fucking game."
When I got out there, I would have fought King Kong. I would have skated through the boards for him.
I wish this story ended with us tying the game or winning, but it doesn’t. We lost 3-2.
In the dressing room afterward, Dale came over to me and invited me and the other goal scorer to go for ice cream in a yellow convertible. I was from rural Nova Scotia and had never seen a convertible before. There was another NHLer in the front seat - I think it was Pete Peeters, the goalie, but I’m not 100% sure. He kept talking about beer farts and that we were lucky it was a convertible.
I’m glad it was a convertible because my head was so big it wouldn’t have fit in anything else. For that drive to get ice cream and back, there were four NHLers in that car.
I’ll take that memory to my grave.

He played great with the Jets but they could never get past either the Oilers or Flames in the playoffs. I spoke to him once when he was coaching the Barrie Colts. Good person in every way!

If any more proof is needed about what a turd Mike Keenan was and is, this is a good clue.

The Mike Babcock school of coaching. How these guys survive is beyond me

@@bl9531 An excellent comparison. Babcock sat out Modano as a healthy scratch so he wouldn't hit 1500 games. When Jason Spezza came from Ottawa to his hometown in Toronto he was a healthy scratch against his old team the Senators. Presumably just to let Spezza know who's the boss. Contrast that to current Leaf's coach Craig Berube. When the leafs signed William Nylander's brother Alexander Berube played him so the Nylanders could see their sons play together. He put them on the same line even. This despite the fact it was likely William's brother wouldn't stay with the team. On a 1-10 scale measuring the class of a person Babcock gets a 1 given all his baloney. I won't rate Berube on his entire career as I'm not well enough informed, but, he scores a 10 on the Nylander situation. Which one of these coaches would motivate you to play your best!?

@ some people appreciate the coach who humiliates his players. I don’t. Here in Montreal we have Martin StLouis. My son played on his team in Midget AAA. He was a great leader then and a great leader now. To each his own.

@@bl9531 Martin St. Louis was an exceptional player. Everything I've seen suggests he's a truly fine person as well. So glad your son's experience bears that out. Humiliation is a one way street to resentment and anger. Not a likely method to get the best from your team in my opinion.

@@robertmcmanus9185 FYI, this is a great interview with St-Louis … it’s in French but there is an auto-translate function in UA-cam (which is admittedly not great).

Keenan was a crap coach. His handling of goalkeepers in Chicago cost them a Stanley Cup. There are more players that despise him than like him.

Ducky was a lifelong friend and a team mate when we were kids. Yeah, he was an awesome player but a great guy as well.

One of the most lethal powerplay of all time was LaFontaine, Mogilny, Andreychuk, Hawerchuk and Bodger, if the Sabres that year wouldn't trade Andreychuk to Toronto mid season, they would ended up as the only line with all 3 members would score 50 goals and Hawerchuk ended that season with 40 some.

There are no controversies. That headline is to generate clicks. This, by the way, is an AI generated narrative of Dale Hawerchuck. It wasn’t actually researched and created by a human being. This channel is a click farm, nothing more. I got sucked in to the Lanny McDonald profile, never again.
