I'm 67 years old with arthritis in my hands and am not mechanically inclined *at all.* I sent my dead MFD off for repair, so had to disassemble and reassemble everything twice. It took me about half an hour each time, but *I DID IT*, thanks to your video. I really appreciate this. Thank you.
I followed your instructions, got a replacement MFD on ebay, and in 20 minutes had the malfunctioning unit out, the replacement in place, everything back together. And it all works like new! With your helpful video, I just impressed the hell out of myself. Thank you!!
What is so great here is that you are so encouraging. My wife and I were able to replace our MFD on our 2008. It was getting way too dim. It seemed to be a daunting task at first. You are so helpful. The only problem we had was disattaching the connector holding the wires to the end of the black plug, but we listen to you do this a few times over and finally figured it out that they were attached at the bottom with a skinny plastic connector that had a tab we couldn't really find easily and were afraid we would break a wire.. But with a flashlight and my wife's suggesting it was like a computer connector, we were able to remove. We had bought a refurbished MFD on Ebay for around $300 that had a guarantee and it came in a few days. We made in addition a $75 deposit which is to be refunded when they get the old one back. One mistake we made was that we did not order the right serial number and simply trusted that all 2008s had the same one. Not true, but we called the company and they said the serial on the refurbished would also work on ours. Our serial on the old one ended in "30" but the new one ended in "10." We finally got it in following your directions. We are so happy with the result and our car is much safer. Thank you.
WOW, thank you so much. The dealership wanted close to 2 grand to fix my MFD. I got mine on eBay for $298.00 and after watching your video 3 times, I did it myself. To say that I'm proud is an understatement;)
It is pretty amazing to me the number of people needing this video. Sounds like a major dysfunction, and should be recalled by Toyota. Mine is now having touch issues, and would like it fixed rather than replaced, but no doubt, I will be forced to replace it.
My husband and I followed your video to replace our MFD. The first time we got a USED replacement from ebay, it did not work. It needs to be a REFURBISHED one in which the touch screen has been replaced. The dealer wanted 1400+ for the part and $200 to install. You saved us $$$ by posting this video and we are beyond happy to have a functional MFD component. Thank you, thank you thank you!
Thanks for posting this video. I made the mistake of placing a Go-Pro suction mount to my 2007 Prius touch screen damaging the touch functionality completely. Fortunately I found your video prior to contacting Toyota. I called my local dealership to get the replacement part # and out of curiosity asked what it would cost for the repair. They quoted me $7,000! I think I only paid $8500 for my Prius. Anyways, I found a used MFD for $275 on ebay (seller name United Imports) and following your instructions, my 7 y/o son and I had it installed within 20 minutes. THANK YOU.
YOU ARE A ROCK STAR!!! I was Super intimidated to do this but with the motivational $2800 benefit it would reap from NOT going to the dealer twisted my arm! You're instructions were clear, cut and simple. Totally blew away the hubby! Thank you so so much! ; )
You have saved my life. I normally don’t watch UA-cam videos when it comes to auto fixes because I always end up confused, but I was pretty desperate when my MFD stopped working. You went through everything perfectly. I had some issues unplugging the power plug. Part of one of my AC covers broke off but everything else went smoothly. I don’t have the display yet, but I decided to do a test run with taking everything off so I’ll be ready when I need to put it on. Thanks so much for your help!
Thanks so much for sharing this! A replacement MFD would run me $500+, but there are folks who will repair it for $200. Saved me a ton of money - and it really was as simple as it looked (had it out in 10 minutes!)
Great Video! Finished the job on my 2008 Prius in an hour or so with no problems and it works great. I was especially pleased because the dealer quote was $1600 for parts and labor - I bought the part on eBay for $160. Suggestion: when re- assembling the covers, fit both the top and bottom yellow retainers just slightly into their respective slots then firmly push both top and bottom simultaneously down to seat them fully.
My MFD was going in and out. The dealer said it would be thousands of dollars to replace and suggested that I wait to replace it when it just stops working altogether. I searched on youtube and saw your video, ordered an MFD from ebay for $180 and voila! The thing works great and I am so grateful that I found your video.
Thanks for this awesome video! To anyone doing this repair: After you disconnect the wires from the MFD, plug them back in and turn on the car. It might solve your issue! Worked for me, so I just saved $200 for a new MFD.
I work at a wrecking yard and was assigned to take one of these off. I had a general idea of what to do but didn't want to mess up. Your video helped me a lot! Thanks
This video was incredibly useful for replacing the mfd in my 2006 Prius! I ordered the mfd from Amazon for about $450, and the total installation time was about 30 minutes, including the time it took to watch the video. The only problem i ran into was that there was one additional electrical connector - a black one - that had a tab on the front that needed to be depressed while pulling it out.. It was really tough to pull it out because there wasn't much for the pliers to grip on to. I ended up pushing a pen against the tab with my left hand, while pulling the whole thing out with the pliers in my right hand. But, it was much easier to insert into the replacement mfd. Thank you for this video!!
I used this video to replace MDF in 2004 Prius, was very helpful easy to follow. My power plug wouldn't disconnect, didn't want to break it, but discovered I really didn't need to disconnect anyway. Just moved the section aside with it still connected, no problem. I got my MDF used on eBay for $200, even with NAV function. Works great!
You were all over the place in the first few minutes, but you did a good job. I am a DIY guy because of the UA-cam revolution and this video will help tremendously. Kuddos and thank you!
Thank you for creating such a helpful and easy to follow how-to on replacing the MFD! This saved me between 100 and 1000 dollars (depending on if I went to a small shop or dealer), you can do this yourself if you buy a replacement on Ebay for sure. You are an excellent teacher! Cheers.
Thank you ma'am, your description & demonstration of how to replace the MFD was organized detailed & concise. The job looks easier then i expected. i will be replacing mine as soon as i locate a replacement one.
The best vid that I can find. Very informative and easy. I was able to pull the mfd to get the right part #. All mfd's are not the same. The JBL stereo has a specific mfd I was told by a Toyota expert. I cleaned the connections and reassembled. The mfd started working again.
I loved your video! So much better than the men who skip half the instructions then expect you to just get it! I've watched a few videos of this and just decided to hire someone until I saw your video now I feel like I can do it myself!
This is awesome! I had foolishly suctioned my GPS to my MFD screen a couple of years ago, which naturally cracked it. I have not been able to use it since, and was not going to pay toyota what they wanted to replace it. I watched this video and then ordered a refurbished MFD. I installed it today and I have a working MFD now!! Can't thank you enough for posting this video.
Stacy and Zoe do a great job - your directions are fantastic. I had a little trouble getting the second vent off so I opened the glove box and popped it off from the side. Thanks for saving me 4 grand!
Thank you so much for this video! Found a replacement MFD on eBay for $200 and did the whole thing in under an hour. I think you helped me save more than my 2007 Prius is worth!
Hello Sw6074 - I don't know where to begin. The MFD in my prius took a dump a few months ago. As you have probably heard, repairs can cost $1,200 and new ones are up to $6,000. I would not pay that kind of money to get it fixed. I attacked the problem 2 ways; first, by finding a private vendor that repaired my unit for $325 dollars and second, finding your video to disassemble and re-assemble the dash. I cannot begin to tell you how much I appriciate you taking the time the post the instructional video. Becaouse of the video, your video contributed to an estimated overall savings of $5,000. if I knew where you were, i would send flowers and treats for the dog. Thank you again
Thanks for the great instructional video. I just did this and it worked great!! One pointer: Instead of using pliers on the power switch for the car, there is a little tab in that plug (just like the 6 attached to the MFD screen) that can be pressed to make it easy to pull it out.
This saved the day! Fantastic video!! I bought the part on ebay for about $225 (make sure you get the right part; my first go around, I bought the wrong MFD -- I think for a car that had navigation, whereas mine doesn't -- so had to return it. On the plus side, by the time the right part came, I'd done a test run of pulling off all the panels and MFD , so it was a piece of cake. What a great feeling to turn on the power and have the panel working again. And for $225!
Great video. It removes all fear of doing this. It was super easy, and my Toyota Dealer wanted to charge me about $7500 for parts/labor, which is highway robbery; presumably they want people to simply trade in their cars for new ones. Thanks, SW!!
NEVER trust the dealer. They told me I had a blown head gasket which I did not believe fortunately. Took it to my mechanic turns out it had a bad water pump!
Thank you very much for the great and helpful video! The touch function of the MFD in my 2006 Prius did not work. The dealer quoted me $8900.00 for a new one, which they admitted was laughable, but suggested a refurbished one for $1400.00 installed. I paid $225 on ebay for the MFD and it took less than 20 minutes to install. My recommendation to anyone else is to make sure you match the part number before ordering a replacement. The first one I ordered did not match, so not all the connections fit. Removing it was so easy I wish I had removed the MFD initially just to verify the part number before ordering, but it all turned out well. Thanks again!!
i have a question, on my Prius display screen, i kind of scratched it with my nail but the scratch does not look like a scratch nor dead pixels,,,it looks like more like a mark that i could not seem to get off, as if it is behind the screen layer or something... my guess that the mark might be on the protector screen of my display screen, the problem is how do i find out if my display screen has a screen protector or not ? this way i do not have to change the whole MFD...Thank you so much
This video was right on. Worked like a charm on my 2007 prius. I had the GPS so there was another blue wire. Got my MFD on ebay for $310 . Took me about 1/2 hour to install, because this was my first time. Dealer wanted $1,600 plus.
Super helpful video, it got me thru the process without a hitch. One suggestion: I never open up any electrical connectors without first disconnecting the 12 volt battery in the back. Just in case any contacts touch the body, which is all -12 volts, this will prevent a short.
Great video. But why hasn't anyone initiated a class action lawsuit against Toyota. This is quite ridiculous! Obviously they made a flawed product that affect thousands if not millions of units that could endanger people's safety.
aznprelude18 - I agree! My 7 extended warranty just ran out a month ago and now the MFD screen goes bad. I paid almost 2 thoousand for that warranty. This is ridiculous!
I don't have a Prius. I just wanted to see how hard the newer cars are to work on yourself. I didn't realize that even the climate controls are operated by that touch screen. What the hell? I've got a '99 Corolla. All my climate control switches and knobs still work! (The air conditioner button fell off, but I popped it back on and it's fine.) If I owned a Prius, I would be saying, "Screw this! I want my manual controls back!"
Thanks so much for posting this! I just bought an 04 Prius and I'll need to replace the screen soon! Definitely using this video for when I get a working screen to put in. 🤘🏽
I'd love to replace my old 2005 MFD that doesn't even have navigation with new one with built in bluetooth, rear camera, and navigation. Do you know if it is possible to do that?
You'd need to find and install (including running new wiring thru areas of the car that are not easily accessible) all the other parts that make those functions work (backup camera, Bluetooth antenna, and GPS antenna). Probably much cheaper/easier to find a used vehicle with those features already installed.
Great video. Not sure if I want to get mine repaired or replaced with a used one like you did. Are they all destined to fail eventually? How has yours held up so far?
Thank you for posting this video. How do you know which replacement /part number to purchase? My local dealership will not release that information. Help
The vents are very brittle on my 08 and a couple crumbled without much pressure at all. There wasn't any way to be "careful". It will be a yard or fleabay for replacements. I'll check dealer prices just in case new are available without needing long term financing.
Sorry that happened. Thanks for the tip though. Makes me rethink attempting the repair on my car until I've found a source for replacement vent panels, just in case.
I have a 2004 Prius. The MFD screen cracked as a result of my GPS attached to front window falling off. Slowly but surely the screen dimmed over a period of a few months. Found this video perfect to help my replace it with a used one I found on Ebay for $140.00. Three comments. It is not necessary to disconnect the starter switch there is enough wiring to push it out of the way. Second, the black connector to the clock is difficult to disconnect as mentioned in a comment I saw. However, if the clock is still working it is easy to pop out the clock and just replace the new assembly using the old clock. One advantage is that you do not have to reset the clock. Third comment, on the two right vents during removal the clips on the top broke off, as did the clips on the top of the MFD assembly, so be careful when removing them. Fortunately even with these clips missing I was able to reassemble dash. Since this is a 12 year old vehicle with 200,000 plus miles I can live with this.
Great video. But I would add one step -- after the new MFD is installed, plug in the Power button and turn the car on to make sure the new display is working.
Is it possible to run car without the MFD installed? We need to send ours out for replacement with a 2 week turnaround. Will we be able to drive the car in the 2 weeks while it’s off getting repaired?
Interesting. I would never try this in a million years; I'd be terrified. But I wanted to see what is involved since my dealer quoted me $2000 to replace the MFD of my 2009 Toyota. Mine has a GPS/maps display that wasn't mentioned here. I hope the instructions are about the same. Thanks. You made it look easy.
thanks for the video, been looking to replace the MFD as is has gone black from the sun, it still works and at night you can see the edge a bit, and control the options if you can remember where the buttons were, but i cant see the battery charge and since its not my primary car , it sits for days without use, and living in the tropics, we get sun year round, and i need to remember to put a sun screen visor in the dashboard , to prevent future damage once i replace it with a functional used one, thank again
very helpful video. can i replace a MFD that has gps system on it? i mean i want to switch my regular MFD with MFD has gps system. kindly guide me on this
I have this problem with my 07. IS your Ebay unit still working? I'm trying to determine which route to take and wondering if your ebay unit is still holding up after 5 years. thanks for the video btw. very helpful. I love Zoe!
Awesome video! I appreciated the notes of encouragement along the way :) Got all the way to the end, but unfortunately I'd purchased a 86110-47081 MFD and the one in my car was 47230. Sadly, the electric plugs don't fit. I'll buy another one but wondered if you happen to know is all 47230 models come with backup camera.
WARNING: The Air Duct Trim Panels are notorious for breaking, especially if they've never been removed before. I'm very handy and yet they just snapped like brittle cookies. Maybe because the car was parked in the hot sun. Anyways, you've been warned. Assume they can be extremely brittle at the top.
awesome tutorial - switching mine tomorrow. :) I suspect mine the LCD just gone nuclear, so I will try to get a replacement screen and replace my original unit.
Thanks for the instruction. My only comment is to be careful pulling the pieces apart. One vent completely shattered and the other cracked when I pulled them. I guess plastic became brittle over the years. Had to order new ones.
This happened to me also. My left vent shattered into numerous pieces and the right broke in two pieces. I'll have to replace those parts when they come in. But the instructions provided made the whole process pretty easy. sw6074's video was superb!
beachbummm69 try pushing on the screen all the way around the edges and listen for a ziplock bag type of sound, this can clear up some touch issues... if the display isn’t activating at all, try unplugging it, then plug back in and sometimes that can help fix it :)
Thanks!! You saved me $3000!!! Toyota would only replace it with a new one from the manufacturer of course. My warranty ran out 8 months ago then it goes bad how convenient... Toyota sucks!!!!! I paid $325 for my MFD repair & $20 for a hybrid garage to remove it. I'll put it back myself thank you LOL!! Screw you Toyota!!!
Hello! Thank you so much for your video! You saved me so much money and empowered me to do this myself. It was so Easy! As a women they try to make you feel small and like you can’t do anything... not the case! I know you said they quoted you 4000... in not sure what that quote looks like today. either way I saved a bundle ordering the screen on eBay and putting in myself. Question, so I accidentally lost both screws holding the MDF screen in (oops) ... what replacement screws did you use?
I receive a quote from Toyota for $12,000.00 to replace my display!!!! I said no way. I have mechanical skills and watched several videos on how to replace this. Ordered my refurbished part and installed it in 15 minutes. Total cost, $ 225.00.
I have a 2009 Prius and my touch screen goes on and off, almost like when the wire on your phone charger is messed up and you have to wiggle it to get it to charge. But the screen will go on and then go completely black and then back on and glitch constantly. Will changing the mfd fix this issue?
Mine has the same issue. Same year car as yours. I took it to the dealer about 1 year ago and they replaced it with a new MFD for about $2000 USD. Now the new one has the same issue. I'm going to try getting a new one and changing it myself to save $1500 or so. I'm curious if this solved your problem, before I launch into taking my car apart.
My son's 2009 Prius had this same issue and has now been completely black for almost a year now. I'm hoping that doing this to replace the screen will fix the issue. For a couple hundred, I figure it's worth a shot.
I replaced my MFD using this video, it was super helpful & all went well, except now my check engine light is on. Did anyone encounter this? Should I try the process again, thinking maybe it’s a wiring thing?
I read somewhere that this can happen when the mfd is replaced with one that isnn't a part number replacement to the exact car package you have. Try doing a master reboot and see how your Prius likes it. If not, go to your local oreillys or autozone to get the code read, if you have and OBDII then do it yourself. Hope this helps! :)

Extremely helpful! Thank you for being down to earth and walking through it so encouragingly. 👏🏼

Thank you very much for the great and helpful video! The touch function of the MFD in my 2006 Prius did not work. Removing it was so easy I wish I had removed the MFD initially just to verify the part number before ordering, but it all turned out well. Thanks again!!
Totally awesome! Love to watch women work on cars. Hope this inspires more people to really own their cars, men too! Thanks!
You saved me $300, thank you for this video and the simple instructions!
i have a question, on my Prius display screen, i kind of scratched it with my nail but the scratch does not look like a scratch nor dead pixels,,,it looks like more like a mark that i could not seem to get off, as if it is behind the screen layer or something... my guess that the mark might be on the protector screen of my display screen, the problem is how do i find out if my display screen has a screen protector or not ? this way i do not have to change the whole MFD...Thank you so much
This video was right on. Worked like a charm on my 2007 prius. I had the GPS so there was another blue wire. Got my MFD on ebay for $310 . Took me about 1/2 hour to install, because this was my first time. Dealer wanted $1,600 plus.
Just took mine out of my 2009 and am sending it off to repair, THANKS to this fantastic video you posted!!! THANK YOU!!!!
Only thing wrong with mine is the screen is cracked. Where not cracked, it works fine. Where did you get yours repaired? How long?
Super helpful video, it got me thru the process without a hitch. One suggestion: I never open up any electrical connectors without first disconnecting the 12 volt battery in the back. Just in case any contacts touch the body, which is all -12 volts, this will prevent a short.
You are my hero. You may have just saved me over $2000! Thank you!
This is ridiculous!
scienz chic Warranties are a scam always. I bought a car like this will keep it a month fix it ,then flip.
If I knew little bit about Toyota Prius...
My father buy a used Prius 2012, battery- fail, touch screen- fail. And no recall for this shit
I got quoted four thousand to fix this. ty for sharing, i appreciate this.
Thanks so much for posting this! I just bought an 04 Prius and I'll need to replace the screen soon! Definitely using this video for when I get a working screen to put in. 🤘🏽
Once installed, is there any programming needed?
Thanks Stacy. Just replaced my MDF via your instructions. Great job! (FYI - the one with NAV is just as easy).
Great!! Thank you! Unfortunately, the link to store is broken, ie, store not found.
I'd love to replace my old 2005 MFD that doesn't even have navigation with new one with built in bluetooth, rear camera, and navigation. Do you know if it is possible to do that?
Have you solved?
I worked right to left on a British car. Success!! £75 for second hand part as opposed to £2500 including fitting. Thank you
Excellent video. Thank you very much. Fixed my Prius in 45 minutes.
Great video. But I would add one step -- after the new MFD is installed, plug in the Power button and turn the car on to make sure the new display is working.
Exactly my thought!
If you see this-does the replaced unit need to be flashed to the vin number? Some mechanics have said to me that only Toyota dealer does that.
Those thumbs down must come from Toyota they want $2800 to replace. Great video!
Can you start and use car while the MFD is off being repaired and run car without it, or is it necessary to have the repaired on ready to put in?
What a woman, great detail and i got my mdf working again.😘
Great video! You said you had your dash apart many times. What else was broke on this?
thanks for the video, been looking to replace the MFD as is has gone black from the sun, it still works and at night you can see the edge a bit, and control the options if you can remember where the buttons were, but i cant see the battery charge and since its not my primary car , it sits for days without use, and living in the tropics, we get sun year round, and i need to remember to put a sun screen visor in the dashboard , to prevent future damage once i replace it with a functional used one, thank again
very helpful video. can i replace a MFD that has gps system on it? i mean i want to switch my regular MFD with MFD has gps system. kindly guide me on this
I have this problem with my 07. IS your Ebay unit still working? I'm trying to determine which route to take and wondering if your ebay unit is still holding up after 5 years. thanks for the video btw. very helpful. I love Zoe!
This is relatively a simple job, my 04 had the same problem, went to the junk yard got a 05 replacement, works great
Dave D how much did you pay for the MFD?
Sean Beier $125.0 and all you need to do is remove the two side vents next to the MFD and you'll have access to it
Awesome video!
Where did you get the new MFD? How much?
the best man for a great job: a woman! Thanks for the video.
Thank you soooooooo much! finally i can control AC and Heater and saved a few hundreds dollars.
Hi I have some questions about my Toyota Prius.
MFD link is old - what term should I search for on Ebay?
Where can I get an MFD for a 2008 Toyota Prius?
If I buy a used MFD, does it need to have a certain product number to match my prius?
WARNING: The Air Duct Trim Panels are notorious for breaking, especially if they've never been removed before. I'm very handy and yet they just snapped like brittle cookies. Maybe because the car was parked in the hot sun. Anyways, you've been warned. Assume they can be extremely brittle at the top.
Wow! You made it look so easy. Can you come do mine? Joking. Are there more than 1 kind of mfd for the 2007 prius?Jimmy
has anyone tried replacing the nav with a different navigation unit that offers more?
Will this work on 2010 prius?
Do you know there are many Prius version out there? Why don't you put on the title what Prius are you referring about???
how much did cost you with the new MDF?
do you need the code for the new unit to unlock it?
awesome tutorial - switching mine tomorrow. :)
I suspect mine the LCD just gone nuclear, so I will try to get a replacement screen and replace my original unit.
I saw someone on ebay selling the screen by itself, was wondering if repacing the LCD display will fix the touch control issues?? anyone?
Thanks for the instruction. My only comment is to be careful pulling the pieces apart. One vent completely shattered and the other cracked when I pulled them. I guess plastic became brittle over the years. Had to order new ones.
This happened to me also. My left vent shattered into numerous pieces and the right broke in two pieces. I'll have to replace those parts when they come in. But the instructions provided made the whole process pretty easy. sw6074's video was superb!
link is dead, they are gone from ebay
beachbummm69 try pushing on the screen all the way around the edges and listen for a ziplock bag type of sound, this can clear up some touch issues... if the display isn’t activating at all, try unplugging it, then plug back in and sometimes that can help fix it :)
mind touch screen Stop working too. But I never bother to fix it cuz all the control is on the steering wheel
tru but u lose gas mileage cuz u cant channel the prius battery
Will replacing the Digitizer cure a dim MFD?
where can I get a replacement? Your video is great.
Kevin Langley , try your local wrecking yard, l did, mine works great
I have a 2009 Prius and my touch screen goes on and off, almost like when the wire on your phone charger is messed up and you have to wiggle it to get it to charge.
I need to replace a 2007 MFD. Will I need the part number to order it on ebay
How did you end up finding the part number?
I replaced my MFD using this video, it was super helpful & all went well, except now my check engine light is on. Did anyone encounter this? Should I try the process again, thinking maybe it’s a wiring thing?
I read somewhere that this can happen when the mfd is replaced with one that isnn't a part number replacement to the exact car package you have. Try doing a master reboot and see how your Prius likes it. If not, go to your local oreillys or autozone to get the code read, if you have and OBDII then do it yourself. Hope this helps! :)
I like the part of this video when the camera shakes. Also, you should have checked the MFD to see if it works before reassembling dash
Perfect .Thank you so much .You save us a lot of $$$$$$$!!!!!! And great explanation !!!
I’m very impressed and thanks a lot for the tutorial 🙏
