      Jenni, I got a box of Inscribe soft pastels, 64 colours from Amazon for about £10 plus shipping and they are very good. I have seen Paul use them before I think so they must be alright - not as posh as the Sennelier but not as expensive either. Hope this helps!

      Every time I get the urge to buy more art supplies, I remind myself how much money I've saved on commuting costs, dry cleaning, restaurant meals, etc. during the pandemic, and then I go for it. By the way, I love my pastels.

    “I wandered lonely as a cloud that floats on high o'er vales and hills, when all at once I saw a crowd, a host of golden daffodils, besides the lake, beneath the trees, fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continues as the stars that shine and twinkle on the Milky Way, they stretched a never ending line along the margin of a bay:10,000 saw I at a glance tossing their heads in sprightly dance.” (Wordsworth)
    It fits well, don’t you think so? Found it this very morning! Though the lake is missing - maybe behind the corner? One never knows...
    Thank you very much for all your nice lessons; always trying to put you in the right mood, no secrets from a brilliant artist that you will never reach and can' t but admire, but clearly sorted in all suggestions and demonstrations for painting! Well I finally tried one of your paintings Paul! I was using Canson XL paper thinking I wouldn't waste money that way on something that might end up in the trash. My paper curled so badly. ☺️ I almost threw it away, but I persevered through it all and my husband actually likes it. He wants me to frame it so he can take it to work and display it on one of his walls in the office. So......because it's only a 9x12, I'm going to give it a go on some Arches paper and either do an 11x14 or a 12x16. (I'm hoping it comes out just as good) I think from now on I better use the better paper. Thank you so much for, "keeping 'em coming"! I tried the Mexican scene and I did have to throw it out. I used the Canson XL for it too. What a mess it was. I won't blame the paper totally, because I'm a beginner at watercolor. I also wanted to ask if a rigger brush goes by another name. I went to Hobby Lobby and there weren't any rigger brushes there. I used the smallest brush I had, but the rigger definitely gives a more narrow line. I so appreciate you Paul and your wife too! 🥰 Please let her know we appreciate her input as well!!! Thanks for giving us all something to look forward to on Wednesdays!!!

    • @ArtbyPaulClark
      @ArtbyPaulClark  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Laina - thanks for your great comment! ... and yes, perseverance always pays off! I don't know of another name for a rigger but they are fairly common. Originally named by marine artists that used them for painting 'rigging' on ships!

    Haven't heard anybody refer to hot cross buns since I left Ohio 40 years ago. Nice to hear of that Easter delicacy once again. It also brought out of the dust-bin of my brain and old, really dumb joke, the sort of thing I keep there: "What do you get if you poor hot water down a rabbit hole?" Answer: "Hot Cross Bunnies." (sorry)

    Thanks Paul! I have been following you for a while now and you must forgive me for asking a beginner's question. In your really cool videos you inevitably come to a point when you say: "now you have to let this completely dry..." (which by the way I love because it cues the drink). Now, what triggers the decision to let your painting completely dry? (I realise that I sound amateurish but hey). Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

    • @ArtbyPaulClark
      @ArtbyPaulClark  3 роки тому

      No worries! - It's usually at a stage when I know I want to preserve what I've painted - it other words no more blessing of the washes. Once it's dry I know that going to be OK for painting the next layer on top!

    Hi Paul, I've been watching your videos for quite some time. I'm a total amateur in water color but always loved the thought of being able to paint. Got myself some fairly cheap supplies to start off with. Every time I try to paint I end up with little color blobs all over the paper that don't blend nicely. I would appreciate any advice on where to start without breaking the bank? 🥂

    G'day to ye Master Clark.
    Tea, coffee, single cream or milk, double cream and thick.
    How much stock do you put into trying to match those consistencies when you paint? Seems like unnecessary complications. I know a fellow that says that watery, milky, creamy and thick is good enough to prevent going too dark too fast. Others just go with watery and creamy. I used to paint too dry but took your advice and use more water now. If I want dark paint I just use plenty of pigment with plenty of water. I don't worry about bringing a dairy and a barista to my "studio". How bout you? What you say?

You can call it Hermione if'n yer wants'ta! Man! You really made those pink blossoms in the trees in one of the other paintings sing. Did you mix the pink? When I was turned on to Opera Rose I was happy happy. Love me some of that for painting pink flowers. Also like me some Quin Magenta too. A weak wash or a tint with white works. Pretty pretty pretty.

    Oh Paul, I can always depend on you to bring a smile to my face but today you also had me laughing out loud... and I'm going to show you where dem birdy's is... Because I had one come visit me this week... It was a young Cedar Waxwing that flew into my window and ended up on an old desk on my deck. Thankfully it was only stunned... I was able to get a very close up picture of it. It's beautiful. and it did eventually fly away. But, that gorgeous bird strutting through your garden was pretty impressive. It's almost Spring here in Alabama just not quite as pretty as yours yet. But soon. Now, let's talk about this painting.... I want to take a long leisurely walk down that lane and just soak up the beauty all around. The dappled light through the trees, the bright yellow daffodils, a slight breeze running through my hair and the sounds of birds singing everywhere...... Your paintings always evoke such emotion... I'm going to post a photo of my little bird on FB page and maybe you will paint it.... :)

    Paul do you consider doing one of your great videos and very good explanations about "shadows"? I am im so much doubt about how to actually do them, the correct colour of a shadow: Put the normal colour down and grey over it, or mix the colour directly darker, ... Somebody said on the internet: Take the original colour and darken it some shades + a bit of the complementary colour + a tiny bit of blue??? 🤔 There are many explanations on the internet which even get quite into physics and light wave length etc., and I am sorry to admit, that I did not get it when I was a kid, and my understanding about physics has not improved during the past decades ... Is there not an easier way to get the right shade to the shadow? 😫 Thanks and greetings from Germany 🤗

    Lovely Paul. Are the pastels permanente? I never noticed you using them before. On another note I LOVED the sound track. I recognized the first piece but not the others. It was so soothing and pleasant to listen to. Maybe you could call out the musical artists. Not to take away from the painting because as usual you are just such an inspiring teacher and much more fun to watch than most.

      Thanks Ruth - I'm glad to say that as several people have suggested removing the music - your suggestion is noted - perhaps I'll list them at the end credits.

    Paul you’ve made a believer out of me. I’m someone who couldn’t draw at all but I gave it a go! I so enjoy your tutorials. May I ask a favor ? I would appreciate it if you would comment on each step whether you are dropping in color wet on wet or if your paint is dry. I sometimes can’t distinguish. Thanks again!

    Your garden is beautiful. Here is is brown and yellow.. everywhere..and they think we might get another snowstorm next week. I did see some bulbs pop up this week in the backyard, and since we didn't plant them (we leased this house last fall, and apparently the original owner had a green thumb) we are looking forward to the surprise of what they might be. We had surprise spider lilies last fall.

    Is spraying enough to keep the papier wet during summer ? (My question may be stupid but i live in Provence and painting with watercolor in summer is so complicated as the weather is too hot and the paper dries so fast) or do you have any advices please ?( except not painting which is so sad🙁)

    Maybe a suggestion for a future tutorial??? I tried to paint an old stone cottage in the mid ground on moorland/heathland with hills in the background and heathland in the foreground. Cottage was great but the heath/moorland just looked like muddy greens and browns, to the point that it looked like a cottage in the middle of a pig farm. It went in the bin, but I liked the composition so would like to try again. Any pointers?

    In your gallery of past paintings I saw a very delightful one with lots of sheep. Every time I try to incorporate sheep into my paintings they always look wrong. If you run out of ideas, or perhaps you feel like it, perhaps you can paint a demonstration containing sheep.
