Thank you Sean for this very well done presentation! I am old enough to have lived through the period of their early sucesses and their later run. They were magnificent. Howard and Mark had incrediblevoices and John Barbata was a rock-solid drummer. Some years ago, I saw Mark & Howard, aka, Flo & Eddie perform in Irvington NY. I managed to get backstage VIP passes and hung out with them for an after event party at a hotel. They were so surprised when I showed up with my old vinyl albums which they happily signed for me. What great guys they are and so much fun to be around...!
This is such an awesome story! I'm embarrassed that it took me this long to read your comment! Thank you for watching, I hope you also watched my video about their Flo and Eddie days!
I loved the Turtles on AM radio, growing up. A friend turned me onto Flo & Eddie in college. We sang our own version of the final chorus of "Moving Targets" as Jimmy Carter was elected President in '76 (can't stop those moving Carters, never have to look at Ford ...). I have not thought of them in many decades, but remembered them during a nap today. Just listened to the whole "Moving Targets" (on youtube), and too much of what they sang is still 100% today. Thank you for your mini documentary on them, glad to learn the background of these fabulous artists. Also glad that some of the music from the 70s is still being discovered and appreciated, the way I enjoy discovering music made in this millennium.
Thanks for watching and sharing your story! That must have been fun to parody like that. I've been listening to that album lately as well because I think I'm going to make a follow-up to this video sooner than later and delve into the 70s career. Currently I'm fixated on making a video on my own band that had released 100 albums in the year 2015 and there is certainly a lot to talk about. 😆 This is my first time sharing that information publicly though I doubt many will see it
@@marthawelch4289 Well, two months (& a Serious Injury) later, it is a bit hard to recall, but there was a Lot of political angst and corruption back in the '70s that unfortunately seems to have metastasized from Reagan ("trickle-down economics", defunding the mental hospitals, the unholy GOP alliance with the christofascists), through the "tea party" republicans, to the MAGA Cult of today. Nearly 50 years later the US is still being damaged by these GOP wackadoos, with the help of the murdochs evil propaganda networks spreading hate, fear and LIES, to the point that this song and album still ring true today.
This was an awesome band. When I first started getting into 60s music it was like opening a new treasure chest. Everyday. I'm still doing that. This is definitely one of the GOATs.
I know it's been half of a year and you've probably forgotten about my video, but I thank you for your comment and apologize for the late reply. UA-cam doesn't always notify me..
Hey , thank you young man for listening and loving the music that I grew up on and with. Nice to see rock n roll living on. Cause in the rock of the beginning years. Rock n roll will never die , it will go down in history. Love always !
Excellent song. Hope you watched my follow up video about what these guys did after The Turtles as well! Thank you for watching and sorry for the late reply!
I don't know why I never replied to your comment, but here's the link to my new video about their duo career and time with Zappa! ua-cam.com/video/zChN71wKRpY/v-deo.html
"You Showed Me" is covered by Jakob Dylan and Cat Power on the Echo In The Canyon soundtrack... I love that song and was honored to play guitar on that version
Very cool, Fernando! I'll check out your UA-cam later and will surely answer my own question, but are you in a band right now or have you released some albums of your own material?
@@SeansMusicHunt i just put out a duo album with Carmine Appice.. I make prog albums called Out to Sea 1 to 3 with 4 coming out in march .. I played bass on Emitt Rhodes 4th album .. produced the second and third Linda Perhacs albums and produced the 50th anniversary tribut of mccartney's ram with Denny Seiwell .. working on a 50th anniversary version of todd rundgren's something anything .. BUT the interesting thing about US... I have a Latin Rock and pop past .. I was the guitarist for Cristian Castro, Paulina Rubio, Jorge Moreno and Noelia. lol
I know exactly what you're talking about! The vocal on that song are incredible throughout. The backing vocals really make it genius! Thanks a lot for watching! Hope you'll check out my video on the Mamas and the papas!
Great quick history on one of my favourite bands. I still have a sealed copy of BOTB's.I bought 2 in the late 70s at Peter Dunn's Vinyl Museum, here in Toronto. That was an amazing store. I love there Zappa stuff. I also them as the Turtles, 3 times in Toronto. Once I brought a copy of Checkpoint Charlie, to sign. They grabbed it out of my hand and started to show their antouraige this cool record they did. They said that they've never signed one before. Anyways, I love the turtles and great channel.
Wow! How cool is that! I hadn't heard of that record. I just looked it up. Thank you! I appreciate you watching the video! I'll do another on Flo and Eddie in the future for sure.
Indeed it is. I enjoyed it very much and made a new video about their career after The Turtles. I'd appreciate it if you check it out. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Now how many people can say that they got to puke on Jimi Hendrix? Seriously, the Turtles and that movie were great. The song Eleanor was supposed to piss off the record co. but ended up being a hit. At 9 or 10 I heard "She's My Girl." And I dug it. But many years later it was unbelievable. A masterpiece! The stones were not allowed to sing, Let's spend the night-together and did sing "some time" together instead. The Doors 1st hit got them on Ed Sullivan and were told not to say, "Higher." But they did and were banned for life. Now the Turtles were a nice Pop band. So, for whatever reason the execs didn't listen to My Girl and they did sing, "Getting so High...." A classic foot note in rock history. Thank you young'un for your condensed post of the turtles. Yes, timeless music, movies. poetry, whatever is meant to live on generation to generation.
I love your comment and read it multiple times and apologize for not replying sooner. I just finished filming my video on Flo and Eddie's career after The Turtles and hope to release it in a few days. Hope you'll check it out when that happens! I appreciate the info I knew about The Doors story but I had no idea that it was somewhat repeated by The Turtles. Very interesting. Thank you for watching!
Thank you so much for watching! Did you make this Sponge Bob cover? I just recently heard that Black Country New Road band. Are you mixing one of their songs with Sponge Bob? Hope to see you around! Check out my other videos to learn about some rarities!
I only had the opportunity to see them once in the early 2000s. It's fortunate that I did, because it lead me to I research and fall in love with them before going to the show. Excellent! Thank you for watching and commenting!
So good! I hope you liked the video, my good friend! It seems when you were 9, Flo and Eddie befriended an awesome dude named Andy Cahan who performed with them until 2013 and I'm going to get to interview him on Wednesday! I'm stoked!
I just came across your story about The Turtles.. (one of my favorites as a kid in the '60's. I am presently reading a book about Mark from the early Crossfire days up to present day. It's called "Happy Forever". It's told by the perspectives of band members .. friends and family as well as others. Very interesting and entertaining read!! Howard's book "Shell Shocked" is equally interesting! I appreciate your video as well!!
Thank you very much for watching! I'm also enjoying "Happy Together," I got it for Kindle and have been reading on lunch breaks at work. I want to make a video about Flo and Eddie's later career but I've been working too many hours in a neighboring city, so my days are long and there is no time for both UA-cam and maintaining my sanity. Thanks again for watching!
@@SeansMusicHunt There's a lot of history to cover about their Flo and Eddie days! When I was a teen, I was into a lot of Frank Zappa... Bizarre but some great music!!
The Turtles are so great. I love all of their songs, especially lesser known songs, like “The Walking Song” and “Rugs of Woods and Flowers.” Their album, “The Turtles Present The Battle of The Bands” is both a great and uproariously funny album. You’ve done a great job with this video on The Turtles. I enjoyed it very much.
Thank you so much for watching, Ken! Thank you for the kind words. And yeah, Battle of the Bands really got me hooked on them and I've always liked them a lot, but as I made this video I got even more appreciation for them and really grew to love the songs you pointed out and many more.
@@SeansMusicHunt I knew their hits from my 60s childhood but didn't know what they looked like & initially put them with the Bubblegum genre ie Ohio Express, John Fred & Playboy's great hit dig at Lucy in Sky, but I've now bought a lot of Turtles CDs, wish they have done a complete Anthology issue but maybe their confluent business deals make it difficult. Even the Beatles had problems after Epstein died. They only ever got about 2-3 penny's out of every £ that EMI made. God knows what Capitol gave them. Love the Turtles & that live clip they played showed how they could sound nearly as good as the recordings. This was a concert, where? & is there a full version on UA-cam? My classmate in school in Scotland was Jimmy McCulloch of Thunderclap Newman & Wings! I was gobsmacked playing with Paul McCartney, I idolised the Beatles from 1963 & I loved all the music & what we got from America. Without Brian Epstein it never would have happened, because until then 'Bands' didn't exist really apart from backing singers. America had some from the early Beach Boys & that would have developed in some form but without the Beatles it wouldn't have went that far musically. Keep Rockin'!
Read it and would like to See the Original Members Together Again..I enjoyed my every moment with the Guys.. They were funny..and I loved seeing their studio work..
Totally agree. I feel like I didn't appreciate it enough at he time that I made this video. Hope you'll watch my follow up about Flo and Eddie's later career!
They did many successful tours together around the time of Billion Dollar Babies. My next video should discuss that but life changes lead to UA-cam slacking. Thank you for watching! I bet the Cooper show was great. I've always wanted to see him and never took the chances I had...
Totally excellent song! That's great that you got to hear that one. I feel like even a lot of fans of the Turtles probably don't know about it. Thank you very very much for watching my video. I really appreciate it.
Flo & Eddie Produced The great Monoman ( l Want To Help You Ann - Standells cover ) Was the sound backing of T Rex. Did Happy Together with The Mother's Of Invention ( Live At The Filmore 1971 )
Ray Davies also produced a few Clair Hammill lps and I think a few 45s too. He also produced the Cafe Society lp that featured Tom Robinson later the leader of TRB.
Interesting. I can't remember all the details but I believe when I made this video, I had read that working with The Turtles was Ray's first experience producing for another band. I love him and the Kinks though and would be very interested in listening to other albums that he worked on in any way. Thank you a ton for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it! I don't even know who Clair Hammill is so thank you for giving me something to look up!
@@SeansMusicHunt I didn't know that. Both Clair and Tom Robinson were signed to the Kinks' label "Konk." Robinson and Ray Davies had a long feud over Ray taking so long to record and release Cafe Society's album. TR wrote a song "You Don't Take No for an Answer" (released on TRB) and Ray responded with a Kinks song "Prince of the Punks."
I've just recently come to really appreciate the turtles , a very interesting story that many aren't aware of (including me until recently) and some great music. I've also been a big zappa fan (or so I thought) and never realized they played with him.
OMG, I am amazed of how well done this was. It's like you would expect, some knowledgeable old man, with this kind of insight. I'm also a cat person. Maybe the cat will win some people over to liking cats.
**** Good video, but you left out my favorite Turtles song: "She's My Girl". Psychedelic in nature but I love the sweeping chorus towards the end. Great Band.
I have the vinyl on display right in front of me currently. Hopefully I'll release my video on Flo and Eddie within a month. I've been studying every little thing I can while. Thank you for watching and suggesting an excellent album!
It's not easy to choose my favorite song as you have requested, but I'll try. "Buzzsaw" is just a great, meaningless rock n' roller. "Nikki Hoy" was always fun, especially live. "Moving Targets" is as rocky as music should get. "She's Rather Be With Me" is right up there with "Happy Together" as truly great pop. And what can I say about "Keep It Warm"? A great song and a great record. And lots of fun live!
Those are all great choices! I remember my first time hearing "Buzzsaw" and being completely surprised by it. A truly unique track by a truly amazing band!!!! Thank you for watching and commenting!! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video enough to respond!
I personally don't remember coming across Warren zevon at all during my research on the turtles.. I'm hoping to continue to research flo and Eddie real soon though and maybe I will discover something then.
@@SeansMusicHunt I found our that the Turtles wanted to help Zevon's career so they recorded three of his songs. This story just keeps getting more interesting!
Haha. Totally. They're so damned entertaining. I love them so much. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment and I'm sorry I didn't see your comment until now...
Sorry I didn't reply right away. I've been busy but not sure why I didn't just reply to this as I've read it several times now and thought about how interesting/great of a song choice that is. Thank you for watching and commenting!
Flo and Eddie with Frank Zappa's 2 (or 3) albums were fantastic. Their song, "Billy the Mountain" was an entire LP album side (I still have the vinyl). The storyline is crazy, about a mountain that comes to life, billowing rocks and boulders out of his mouth as he up-roots and travels across America. Billy the Mountain has a wife which grows out of his shoulder, which is a crooked pine tree. Billy convinces his wife, named "Ethel," to venture out on a vacation (Billy was rewarded much $$$ from the postcards he'd posed for for all those decades). Upon receiving his royalties, Billy and Ethel travel across America, naturally causing untold damage to everywhere they traversed. - I know, that's the mind of Frank Zappa for you. The song, "Billy the Mountain" contains about 8 or ten different songs within. --FYI
i really enjoyed the video and all the info. was the band made up of really good musicians and did they actually play on the studio recordings or did they use studio people like the wrecking crew so everything would come out just right? when i've seen some of their appearances on video it's obvious they are lypsincing and the players are going through the motions. i've heard a lot of the bands even the byrds used a studio band but roger maguinn was allowed to play.
I love the Turtles entire album catalog, but I especially love the Battle of the Bands which is a great listening experience and a lot of fun. It took its cue from Sgt. Pepper with the band taking on different musical personas with each song. There is pop, psychedelia, surf, country, folk influences. "You Showed Me", "The Last Thing I remember" "Surfer Dan", "Earth Anthem" & "Elenore" are all great songs. Nick Lowe would take this idea of using different personas with his Pure Pop for Now People/ Jesus of Cool in the UK In the late 1970s.
Thanks a ton for watching and leaving feedback, Errol! I'm still kind of figuring out exactly how I want to format the videos but I'm glad you agree on having the casual approach! I have a feeling I will get more in-depth on some of these bands in the future! Thanks again! Hope you'll stick around for more!

Found a 45 of The Crossfires @ a garage sale, the lady gave it to me. Flo & Eddie went to my high school Westchester High in LA. Met Mark about 2003 or 4 at a church in Westchester, & that was a bit of a let down. Lindsay
If that's the case, you should likely watch my follow up to this video in which I go into details of Flo and Eddie after The Turtles. Hope you enjoy both videos! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Sean, I enjoy your videos. You are too young to really remember the Turtles, but I’m not. I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s. Graduated high school in 1971, so yea, I remember them well. One thing that I always wondered about is how Mark would come up to Howard (during a song), and goof with him in an intimate way. It was so odd. I wondered “what the hell? What’s he doing”? Have you seen this in their performances?
😆 to an extent. I've seen them live before, but obviously not with the energy of their youth and I very much enjoy watching videos of them. The 2 and a half man show that they did from 79-81 is especially ridiculous. My video on Flo and Eddie's later career has a snippet of Howard crawling through Mark's legs while singing. 😂 Absolutely hysterical legends. I love them so much. I wish I could have experienced their shows with Zappa. Would be incredible
Of course, I made this video a couple of years ago and even your comment makes me think, "Really? I didn't discuss one of my favorites if their singles?!" But honestly, it could have been in my script and then removed for what I felt were time restraints at the time. This was one of the longest videos I'd made at the time. Thank you so much for watching more than just one video on my channel! I really appreciate you checking it out and commenting on them!
Wow! I bet that was incredible! I saw The Turtles Featuring Flo and Eddie and I've always really wanted to see Cooper. That sounds incredible. That would have been shortly after the Alice Cooper band broke up and Cooper became a solo artist. Very cool.
The Turtles didn't quite manage the same levels of success here in the UK. If memory serves me correctly didn't the band play at Tricia Nixon's wedding which was held at the White House? Another good video Sean.
Thank you very much! I do mention them performing at a party at the White House in this video. Not sure if it was a wedding though. May have been a birthday party? I assumed they didn't get as big in the UK but it's interesting to hear that.. I love them very much and actually listened to one of their albums while doing chores today. Thanks again for commenting! You're awesome!
@@SeansMusicHunt Agree they were a great pop band that perfectly captured that late 70s sound- not quite bubblegum but leading there. You did mention a WH party. Keep up the great work- it's appreciated.
@@joiebob I could not find any written corroboration on The Turtles playing at Tricia Nixon's wedding. They did play at the aforementioned private party for Tricia and guests. Her mom and dad were out of town. And the antics did ensue even though The Turtles were considered one of the good guys. Some bad guys were The Stones and The Animals.

Currently I'm fixated on making a video on my own band that had released 100 albums in the year 2015 and there is certainly a lot to talk about. 😆 This is my first time sharing that information publicly though I doubt many will see it
Would you please explain the meaning of "too much of what they sang is still 100% today."?
Enjoyed. Well done.
Thank you sir! I hope you'll check out my video on their career after The Turtles or some of my other videos as well! Thanks again! Cheers!
Thanks for talking about the Turtles and Flo and Eddie. It was a joy to hear you talked about a lot of backstage stories.

This was an awesome band. When I first started getting into 60s music it was like opening a new treasure chest. Everyday. I'm still doing that. This is definitely one of the GOATs.

Thank you!

Howie’s autobiography is a fantastic read

She'd Rather Be With Me & Outside Chance have been my faves since I was like 8 (1972) when I first heard them on 45rpm's!
The Turtles are so great. I love all of their songs, especially lesser known songs, like “The Walking Song” and “Rugs of Woods and Flowers.”
Their album, “The Turtles Present The Battle of The Bands” is both a great and uproariously funny album.
Great songs🎵& more complications😮 than any other band, yet the main 2 keep on smiling.😊😊
Totally. I've been listening to Flo and Eddie non-stop. So fun even though they went through so much. Thanks for watching!
Nicely done- also, look for Kaylan's bio from a few years ago "Shell Shocked", it's a hell of a read if you care anything about the band.

So far she seems interesting. It is cool she joined Wishbone Ash for a time as well
@@SeansMusicHunt I didn't know that.
They were the Greatest Band ever !!

--FYI
I love it so much and my next video will talk about this!!! Thank you for watching and leaving a Mountainous comment!

i really enjoyed the video and all the info. was the band made up of really good musicians and did they actually play on the studio recordings or did they use studio people like the wrecking crew so everything would come out just right? when i've seen some of their appearances on video it's obvious they are lypsincing and the players are going through the motions. i've heard a lot of the bands even the byrds used a studio band but roger maguinn was allowed to play.
You are totally correct and my video on The Mama's and The Papa's mentions The Wrecking Crew, but The Turtles performed the music themselves.
Cool. You should do more in-depth mini-documentaries, but without losing the casual approach.
Thanks a ton for watching and leaving feedback, Errol!

What? No mention of She'd Rather Be With Me? I think that was a pretty big hit for The Turtles.
Of course, I made this video a couple of years ago and even your comment makes me think, "Really? I didn't discuss one of my favorites if their singles?!"
