Mike Awesome did the right thing. He's risking his health and his life and the company he works for can't even pay him. I would have gladly thrown the ECW belt in the trash on Nitro. One of the scummiest things you can do is not pay your employees.

RVD stated he tried to stick it out for a while, but the amount Paul owed him just got too big to the point, RVD knew there was no way he would be paid. RVD still talks highly of Paul creatively, just not as a businessman.

Paul was a scumbag who leeches off his talent, and naturally that made him a great top management to Vince.

I was at that PPV in Chicago in 99 in Villa Park. I met JC at the meet n greet and he was such a cool guy! Took a couple pics and he signed a couple magazines for me. Couldn’t have been any nicer! Did see him over by the t-shirt area and he came over and we started talking. He stayed in character a bit. Was very cool! Every wrestler that day couldn’t be any nicer! Jerry Lynn, New Jack, Lance Storm, Tommy, Don Callis, Joey Styles, Axl, Joel Gertner. Great time.

The wrestling business is no different than junior high school. If you’re in a certain clique, you can do whatever you want and nobody will turn on you. Mike Awesome wasn’t getting paid and he was the ECW champion. He went months without a paycheck so he decided to secure a good paying contract with a bigger, more financially stable company, and people like Joey styles and other talent just trashed the man for doing the same thing their buddies did, get paid.

You can’t blame Mike Awesome for jumping to WCW for a guaranteed 6 figured contract after not being paid for months by ECW (I hear he was owed about $150,000 in unpaid wages). And Paul Heyman can’t complain and go on about Mike breaking his contract or shouldn’t have talked to WCW while under contract to ECW because I see it as Mike’s contract to ECW was null and void after Paul/ECW broke the terms of that contract by not paying Mike, so down to ECW’s own actions Mike was legally free to talk to whatever company he liked and free to wrestle for them ECW Heavyweight Champion or not. As long as he didn’t bring the belt out of Nitro or Thunder and didn’t talk about how ECW isn’t paying their wrestlers including their champions he was ok

  • @Matt-cr4vv

Even if the contracts were strong the fact he wasn’t paying people in time moots enforcing them because he already breached them.

Paul Heyman was a creative and political genius. But he was a moral and financial idiot. That’s why ECW went under, he burned so many people that no one trust him enough to save the company. Had a man of integrity been running ECW, it possibly could’ve survived. And I’ll always believe McMahon always had an agreement with Heyman to pull the plug on ECW once WWF no longer could benefit from them.

Ecw was the catalyst for the success of Monday nitro and the nwo storyline ! All of the best cruiser weights came from ecw and the promos hall and Nash made were similar to what Austin and pillman made when they debuted on ecw calling out bischoff as the guy running wcw ! We're never gonna agree on this stuff. It was fun to rewatch Nitro on Peacock and see for myself how much of the WWE narrative about WCW is just plain wrong.
Those guys you named didn't mean much in WCW. Jericho was a mid card funny heel for a little while but did he move the needle? No. Those other guys weren't shit in WCW.

I partly agree with this. The difference imo is that when the wrestling business was in a lull from 94 to mid 96 ECW fans rocked the merch and spent their hard earn money to rep ECW and it's wrestlers out of support and love. Sure, as WWF and WCW got white hot their merch numbers blew ECW's out of the water. The business as a whole had never been commercially and financially successful, and it hasn't been since. But ECW's fan base put money into the product as the industry was dying and stars weren't drawing.
