- Two European friends and their three kids spend 11 days on a canoe trip down the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Carmacks (300 km) and subsequently visit Dawson before spending some more time in and around Whitehorse on a 3-week summer vacation trip in 2017.

The adventure was filmed with two GoPro Hero 4 action cameras, a Feiyu Tech Gimbal for GoPro was used for stabilization. Still footage was shot with various cameras, e.g. Panasonic Lumix FZ1000, drone footage shot with a DJI Mavic Pro and plenty of batteries for the time spent off the grid. Polarizing filters used on all equipment.

6 of us in 3 canoes did the full trip from Whitehorse to Dawson way back in August of 1979. That derelict on Shipyard Island looked almost new and seaworthy when we pass by 38 years ago. Glad that we brought all of our own food. The store in Carmaks had nothing that we would have needed. I was eagerly waiting for your run at shooting the Five Finger Rapids. One of our canoes dumped there and we lost 2 days food and camera gear. Supplemented our supplies with fishing. Further downstream one of our canoes got caught in Big Back Eddy and went around a couple of times before exiting, much to the enjoyment of the rest of us. Somewhere before Dawson we stopped at a lone prospector's cabin for a visit. Not knowing exactly where we were, we asked him how long it would take to get to Dawson. "10 hours," he said, "if you paddle, 11 hours if you just drift." So we rafted up and dozed off and on for for an unknown amount of time and were worried that we might have drifted past Dawson. Fun trip, no bugs, no rain, long, leisurely days, as the sun really didn't set until about 2 or 3 am, if at all.
Thanks for sharing Bob - a lot has changed since the 70s and no doubt it will all look different in another 30 years! Meanwhile the store in Carmacks is quite amazing so no need to take food for the entire trip. Our original plan was to canoe all the way to Dawson but with the kids we decided to slow the pace after the first few days because they needed plenty of sleep and play time. In hindsight it was a very good decision.
Wow. Wonderful trip, so well planned with all the gear and food and little things for amusement, such as making slingshots... everyone will remember this trip for the rest of their lives.
What an extraordinary adventure. Absolutely beautiful. The kids will never forget this.
I live in Scotland 🏴 and I loved the video I definitely think more young ones should experience the outdoors the way we used to before the sunshine holidays package kind of stuff I always enjoy taking my son up the North of Scotland fishing and camping being out in the wilds we still do it but not so rough stuff but we still love it so it was great watching this it brought back great memories so thanks a million for sharing your trip, big thumbs up 👍 from the Jocks fa Scotland 🏴🙏👌🎣
Greetings to Scotland and thanks for the thumbs up feedback - much appreciated!
Awesome adventure, memories of a lifetime...thank you for bringing us along
Best video that money can buy.
danke, liebe Leute. Eure Reise hat mir sehr gut gefallen. Die Dronenbilder sind einsame Spitze. Alles Andere natürlich auch. Gruß, Harald aus dem Ruhrgebiet
This literally brought tears to my eyes, my father never had any interest in my existence whatsoever.
Es sind kei Shorts :D ... Legendäre Moment.
Also awesome adventure! Beautiful scenery and you can feel, that you all had a good time. Thats the most important thing!
Nice editing, very pleasant to watch! Please bring us along another time too!
Well done to you all, a great Canoeing film. This world needs more parents like you, who take the time to show and teach your children about the natural wilderness. Five Star Film ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks Mountain Mike! Much appreciated.
What fun. Such vast areas of water to explore. Love it.
This is absolutely awesome dudes! Planning on taking my kids sometime soon!
Great camera work. I’ve been down that river many times and this video makes me want to do it again. It’s always different. Thanks for sharing

Thanks Jeff!
Very inspirational. I hope to do a similar trip. You guys cook better out there than I can cook in my own kitchen. Excellent job with the video.
Thanks!
What sort of soulless creature downvotes a video like this?
What an excellent adventure for those kids. They'll remember it for the rest of their lives.
Thank you, dear :-)
Fantastic trip and adventure for the kids. My hats off to you, teaching your children such amazing lessons in life.
Thanks Shawn. It was indeed a beautiful experience and we often and fondly think back on that adventure
This was fantastic. Good trip, great scenery and well filmed and edited. Kudos. I enjoyed this very much.

Watching this brings back memories of my trip 10yrs ago. Awesome journey amazing sites.
And watching it makes me want to go back too :-)
@@hobnobblingstone346 one day I will return.
Wow. I want to do this too. I’ll have to find a family I could share with. Priceless.
Give me a day of canoeing or hiking and I’m the happiest guy you know. Thanks for the great video.
You are welcome.
What a great way to see the Yukon....no flies, bears wind or rain; just an excellent Deutsche production. Roughing it in style!
Thanks Colin - indeed we were very very lucky with the weather and insects - we saw only a single bear in the distance - a bummer - we were disappointed we didn't see more (although the thought is quite scary ...)
Oh, one more thing: Swiss Production, to be precise.
Canoeing : not the destination, but the journey. Great adventure.
@Jar of Smegma so is your life. goodbye
What great memories for your kids. I love how they all help around camp too. You've taught them great things. Amazing trip. Thanks for sharing.☺️

Thank you for this moment, very pleasant to look at, superb photos, good filming also thanks to this photo shoot, superb River
.
Appreciated!
Cleaning stinky socks and underware: grey ashes from a camp fire and hot water,, agitate in this mixture and let steep for a while. Rinse and dry. They will be fresh and clean, ready for wear when dry.
Thanks Mike. Or use soap, that also works, believe it or not.
You inspired me, these breakfasts, this equipment, this music, wow
Beautiful nature!
Great idea
Yes, looking back, there was a lot of emphasis on the breakfasts! But that's all you do all day, float and eat :-)
Amazing camping.
Ich habe deine Reise genossen. Danke, dass Sie uns mitgenommen haben.
Amazing. trip of a lifetime stunning views thanks for taking us along.
What a terrific video and an impressive trip! AWESOME!!!!
This is a great familly adventure to have. 👍👍👍
Brilliant, loved the whole trip...well done photography, totally enjoyed this...wish i was there
Thanks!
Amazing adventure and parents 👍👍👍
I lived in Whitehorse for just a yearcoming from Vancouver Island.
I remember being shocked at the time that direct flights from Germany came during the summer to a city with under 30000 residents.
The summers were great but far too short and the winters were awful.
You really feel the isolation living in the Yukon. Where you went there is literally nothing for hundreds of miles. Makes BC feel over populated.
I do prefer the west coast though, much more lush with bigger trees.
Hard to get the experiance you got there down here, too many tourists here during the summer. Canoeing is epic in the Yukon.
Amazing holidays! To be reminded forever. Congrats and thank you for your fine job, great videos, beautiful places. I've enjoyed a lot watching it all.
I appreciate your positive feedback, Javier, thanks!
Very good video. Just got an old Grumman 17' and I'm already planning canoe camping trips for my family.
Love from Canada. Great to see you here, can't wait to see you back :)
Love from Switzerland. We'll be back.
wow wow what a truly inspiring video. well edited, well shot and full of the stuff you want to see. I'm a big fan of the Yukon river territory and watch many short you tube films. this is by far the best one I have seen, watched it three times now. will be there myself in the near future. but for now I'm still canoeing the tammar estuary in devon England
Thanks for the friendly feedback and thanks for the idea: we're considering a follow-up canoe trip a bit closer to home and England could be just the place!
beautiful swiss family and friends. makes me miss my home country.
ja ja
ja ja! Switzerland is still where it always used to be, so you should be able to find it ;-)
Great adventure, happy family bonding and beautiful scenery. Nice video.
Absolutely wonderful experience. Kudos to the camera man. that was an amazing amount of work.
Yes, it was a brutal amount of work, but going through all the footage allowed me to relive all those great moments.
That looks like a great time. I would love to take my canoe on an adventure like that.
Really good! Thanks!
Wonderful video and looks like you had excellent weather most of your trip-thanks for sharing!
We had amazing weather, very lucky indeed :-)
Great and unforgettable adventure for kids! Nice video, thanks for sharing! :)
wow this is an amazing video really captures the beauty and fun to be had on a canoeing holiday and the beauty of Alaska
Thanks Brendan, much appreciated! Though I should mention that while the Yukon does flow through Alaska, we were on the Canadian side before it reaches Alaska
Great video and edits. oh and drone shots =)
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for making this vid! It made me add yukon river canoeing in my bucket list!
Definitely do it!
Making good memories.
Stunning scenery and production.

Amazing, and home made bread wow! Great job with the filming and editing as well. We visited in the winter but thanks to this are now planning to return int he summer. A big thanks, very entertaining.
Thank you Steve
Very enjoyable. Well worth the watch. Top marks for breadmaking!
And for the pancakes? :-) Thanks!
Incredible journey, very well done video, made me wish I was there. Really amazing video footage and photography.
Thank you
Very cool guys
Mine neither but I’m sure ur a lovely human. Don’t feel sad.
The Yukon river is pretty wild river i've boated up and fished in and stayed in a cabin and had rainbow trout, near miles canyon great memories. This not a beginner canoe river in most spots . Its wide in spots so you really have to wear your life vest. I live in the kootenays and theres a lake river thats a great spot to beginner canoe or kayak.
Thanks for your comment da ne - you are lucky to live in such a beautiful region!
Great video! I watched it twice. I'm actually going to study in the Yukon and this is the first thing I'm going to do once summer break hits.
It was one of the most awesome experiences I've ever had - the good weather helped no doubt! You definitely MUST do this if you are in the region.
Amazing. I'm so proud to be Canadian
Rightly so!
Wonderful trip, love to see people taking kids canoe tripping. You saw no bears, had no biting bugs, and had no storms? My family is very good at getting rained on, you might say we are rain magnets. Subscribed and hope to see more of these kids on wilderness adventures in the future.
Thanks for sharing.
Nice impression of your adventures mate. Unforgetable experiences for the kids and all of you. Great camerawork, variety of views and editing. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.
One question: Why do you put water in the oven to bake a damper (bread)? Any special reason?
The "oven" like that directly in the fire would a) cause the bread to burn on the outside and be dough in the middle and b) prevents the pot from melting. What you don't see in the video is that on the fourth attempt the water evaporated before we noticed and we were left with a piece of coal and a hole in the pot.
Man, I love watching what money can buy. ;-)
Watched again! Great video!!! Best/Roy
Thanks Roy!
9/5000

sehr z'empfehle! Merci für'd Kommentar.
Amazing adventure... Love it ;)
Absolutely beautiful footage! What dates did you do this trip? Looks like you perfectly targeted the best weather and river flows of the year! End of July?
Yep, we were lucky with the weather! Mid-July to beginning of August.
Hi, what an amazing trip. We are two lucky fathers planning to bring our children on the same trip for the canoeing part and som gold prospecting in the summer of 2021. Please if you can, provide us with some budget information. It would help us a lot as we are setting up the plan now. Wishing you all an awesome day.
We spent, very roughly, about CHF 4500 for my son and myself, including flights from Europe to Whitehorse, Canoe rental (Tandem canoe), accommodation in Carmacks (simple hut on the campground), Husky Bus apartment in Dawson (3 nights), Tombstone excursion with Husky Bus, Husky Bus transfer back to Whitehorse, accommodation in Whitehorse (B&B, 2 or 3 nights), food, rental car in Whitehorse. Not included is some purchases made in Europe for camping gear. Hope this helps. I highly recommend this trip - it was amazing - I would do it again!
Hobnob Blingstone Thank you so much for this info. We are really excited and are looking at videos, reading and so on. We all love panning for gold so we will be doing a bit of that as well. You did not canoe all the way to Dawson City, any reason for that? Do you think it is to far with children?
@@thomaskristiansen3149 Hi again, the original plan was indeed to do the whole trip all the way to Dawson but 3-4 days into the trip we noticed that we'd have had to speed up our pace, but with kids you need time, time in the evening to set up camp, lots of time in the morning to start the day, eat, pack up, the kids need time to play. 3 to 4 hours on the river was enough. Thus we decided mid-trip to take our time and it was much better, no rush, relaxed. We organized a transfer to Dawson from Carmacks, the guy at the campground helped with this. The river gets wider and muddier after Carmacks, in my opinion less attractive, but that is, of course, subjective.
Hobnob Blingstone Thanks alot for the response. Seems like we will be looking to follow in your footsteps 🤣. have an amazing summer
Awesome pictures. To watch the complete hour I am missing some storyline. Anyway thanks for sharing.
love it!... well done cool dad :-)
excellent, thanks for sharing
Great trip memories made for a lifetime! Curious if the boys got along the whole trip? This trip is now in my bucket list!
Hi, yes, the kids got along mostly well, most of the time ... ;-)
Hi guys like everyone else has said this is an amazing video, very inspiring. I'm Curious about your gear especially the Dutch oven pots, and would you share the bread recipe? hahaha Lol.
Wie cool ❤
Tx!
Richtig gut gemacht.
Great entertainment, but you forgot to show the young one's eating the bread.
Regards from North Wales UK.
Great !! A good moment for you and the childrens ! But , how do you put the plan with the satellite view?
I tracked our route with a Garmin wristwatch and then plotted the routes in Google Earth Pro. Movement and recording can be done in Google Earth Pro.
