Walmart also carries fixed blade bait knives for around $5-7. I would personally carry that over a folder. That is a personal thing though. Good kit in a small carry form. Well done.

Those $3 bootleg 'Moras' in their fishing section are great. Usually kept loose in a box on a low shelf.
I like the folder in this video though as an extra in small kits. Saw a couple review videos on it that were interesting.

Those SOL heatsheet emergency blankets are very reusable.
For a hiking emergency kit, I'd strongly recommend the SOL emergency poncho, if you can find one. It's made out of the same tough reflective material as the emergency blankets, but you can easily wear it if the weather turns sour, which has happened to me on more than one hike. It's light enough that you can carry both the poncho and the blanket, so that you have something to keep the rain or snow off, and something to sit on or cover your legs with.

That's a great idea using a mini flashlight as a zipper pull. I've been tuning in to your channel for so long I had to subscribe! Keep wandering!

I am putting together a new lightweight EDC bag (Eagle Creek shoulder bag) for my urban forays. I am disabled and I don't drive so I don't get out much but when I do go out I wanna have basic gear with me. Your video helped me pick the items. Thank you. BTW, I always carry a BIC lighter, a SAK, and either a Benchmade Gryptillion or a small fixed-blade knife. Thanks again.

another thing about lip balm is in an emergency along with a cotton ball can be used as a fire starter . You shouldn't underestimate that little saw, there's a few things it can be used for like making notches and other small tasks . A very well put together piece of kit and video.

Some small fishing gear would be good with the kit. Fishing line, small hooks, and small ball lead weights.

Good information here. We should always remember to have the basics (5 C’s) with us anytime we are planning to go into the woods. A scout for a hunting trip or a short day hike can lead to an opportunity for us to use the items in an emergency. I must admit that I don’t recall seeing very many of these items at my Walmart. Thanks for the information.

Don't trust their stores to always carry the same items or keep them restocked reliably. That's been my experience and I'm one county over from "Walmart Land".

Good to call attention to emergency items. Something could happen and may have to spend a night in the woods. A couple things I would change. I always include a tourniquet, because you can bleed out in 2 minutes with a cut artery; a contractor trash bag because you can fill it with leaves for ground insulation, a poncho for rain and emergency shelter; some pecans to eat and as a fire starter (a pecan half will burn like a candle for a minute); and I would replace that water bottle with one that has an embedded water filter.

Or a metal water bottle (you can boil water to make it safe - if you have a plastic one, wake sure it is completely clear (see thru), then you can fill it with clear water that is questionable and place it in direct sunlight for 6-8 hours to kill any pathogens before drinking (unless you have the tabs still)

Gerber actually makes a couple great very small razor blade style knives that are very affordable maybe in place of that derma safe blade the eab and prybrid both from Gerber offer up very high quality compact design and size while staying sharp... you can even keep a pack of extra blades they sell small containers made just to hold razor blades!!! There 2 i started putting in all my kits... not as a main blade but as a back up.

What you do with that saw is use it to cut your notch for bow drills. Much easier than using a knife. I have that same multitool from Bass pro shop.

Good video. Always good to have a refresher on hiking/survival bag contents and that it doesn't have to be a giant kit. As well as a reminder on why carrying one is important. I remember reading the story about that hiker.

Used a waist pouch for years but more of a substitute for coat pockets when the weather warms up. Not a huge difference in the stuff in it though I had no bottle pouch. Have the same multitool but the orange part is black. The Philips screwdriver eventually bent out of shape so I replaced it with a a Gerber Dime but you might be luckier, that's the chance you take with cheaper multitools and knives.

Hey I wanted to say you have a great channel. I've been hiking since I was able to carry a pack, and have always looked to travel lighter since I was 14 or so. I have a lightweight survival kit very similar to this I keep on me and with me as well as my edc, flashlight, knife, ccw, etc. You do a great job in your videos man. Keep up the great work, I always enjoy ever video you make. Happy hiking!

I have two hip packs but beyond that I'd rather wear a small chest or thigh rig. Just fits me better. Walmart had some new hammocks I picked up last month, they seem to have a few good things now.

I would like to say that in my opinion, the saw on the multi-tool is very useful. I carry a small multi-tool and paracord in my pocket ALL the time and am completely prepared as long as I am clothed for the season and area. I can make ranged weapons, i.e., a crossbow, in about one hour, that would be capable of defense and food procurement. I have one of the heavy-duty wire saws and it will break after a lot of use (you could probably process enough wood for 6-7 days with it before it breaks), but it will break because the wire will get hot an become more brittle with use. You would be much better of packing a folding saw blade (no handle) and make a handle from gathered materials and the paracord. The wide blade will dissipate the heat much better and will actually cut better in the long run. Other than those points, I agree with all the rest of the video. I would add two (or more) large trash bags to enhance the use of the space blanket. And more cord, the more you know the less you need to carry.

The little multi-tool is great, I have been using one in my coin pocket of my jeans for 2 years now. It has proven to be a great way to spend $5.00 for quick little things that come up when you don't want to keep a full size unit on you. After a little love from the WE sharpener the blade keeps an edge way better then any expectations that I had for it.

I have a kit VERY similar to this! A small fanny pack style hiking kit with attached water bottle holder (not 32 oz capable) from Walmart. I kept it for a while as a day trip kayak kit but have since built a solid day/overnight kayak kit and now use this little fanny pack kit as my day hiker kit.
Great video! 👍 Keep up the good work!

I would suggest some way of heating water, such as a canteen cup or water bottle cup. Warm water will help to keep you warm at night and provide a psychological boost. Also, a bandanna was many uses from water filtering, bandages and signaling as well as as fire starting. A small length of wire will work for lots of things when your hands are too cold to use string, as well as fashioning things like a tripod. I recommend braided picture hanging wire as it is easier to use, but a little more difficult to cut.
    Thanks for your great video.

I guess I’m cheap about knives, but I can’t bring myself to pay $200 to $300+ for knives. I’ve seen this bag in Walmart many times and never gave it a second thought…I will now. It’ll have a great use at work too.

Something YT creators don't talk about enough is the importance of communication with someone letting them know where you'll be and when you'll be back .
Another item no one puts in these kits are small power banks to charge their phones if needed.
