People who think that Kenshiro, the man who always use his absurd strength only to protect the weak and is never afraid to cry and show compassion and emphaty, has anything to do with "toxic masculinity", are just blatant idiots not being able to see an inch beyond their nose.
In fact, Fist of the North Star has plenty examples of toxic masculity in clear contrast to Kenshiro, like Shin thinking that he can win love by brute strength, Souther's hiding his trauma behind narcissism and cruelty, or the goons going around abusing the weak, and ultimately they all meet their defeat by the hand of a true man.

I'm glad to see the younger generation talking and enjoying Hotoko no Ken...well outside of memes...guess that can't be helped. It's a martial arts saga caught in a Mad Max world. Its art is as legendary as Kenshiro, and still inspires tough guy personas to this day. Many do forget that this inspired JoJos Bizarre Adventures, and a lengthy volume of other manga-kas and anime...including Project Ako to name a few!

The repetitiveness you're complaining about (he enters a town ruled by some guy, kills him, moves on to the next town) isn't as present as you made it out to be. A lot of characters are introduced and everyone has a different, rather emotional backstory that's pretty much crucial to the progression. Ultimately they had to progress the story that way because of Muso Tensei (you know why if you've read it, the power of friendship done a bit differently) and after that it doesn't really happen anymore. Also, the whole world is filled with evil goons so Ken makes his way clearing the path up until the end, otherwise it would've been a completely different manga (romance). At least to me I have to say it didn't feel repetitive at all. This is basically (what influenced) Shonen writing. DB, One Piece, etc. they all function in this kind of way.
Thanks for the video! It was nice to watch 👊🏻

This was a huge influence for the creator of Jojos Bizarre Adventure too! Ken looks like a Jostar ancestor. It is a very graphically violent manga, but there is an interesting storyline with a flashback to Ken’s love story. I agree that it becomes a bit repetitive with bad guy after bad guy, but much like Mad Max kept sequels going far too long. Love Kenshiro’s compassion for the oppressed.

2:23 -> just a small correction: Hokuto No Ken (Fist of the North Star) is actually the title given to the masters of the style, as in: "Kenshiro is the current Fist of the North Star after the title was passed down to him." The martial art itself however is called Hokuto Shin Ken (Divine Fist of the North Star).

Thanks for doing this video on the series. I have been reading, watching, playing Hokuto no Ken since 1992. I was very fortunate enough to be living in Japan when they were celebrating the 20 year anniversary, so I saw a whole resurgence of merchandise, animation, toys, etc. Since then, it has been very much becoming more popular here.
Although I agree with a lot of what Ryan has said here, I think what also needs to be mentioned is that it is very much a product of it's time. The series got it start in the 80's where things had glorified virtue with an edge of corniness. As the late 90's and 2000's rolled around, there was a parody of this virtuousness with dark characters or more attention to villains. Raoh is a good example of this, since his journey as a character in the main story has the most growth.
Inevitably, franchises come down to money, so with the anime and manga, "investors" want to see more of the same, so the repetitive nature of what Ryan is speaking of is very much in the same vein as why Dragonball Z and beyond has been pretty much the same note since. Thankfully, I think Souten no Ken (prequel series of Kenshirou's uncle) is better writing, learning and adapting from the original.
I for one live and die by this manga and it has guided me through much turmoil in my life and has made me shed manly tears no matter how many times I read or watch it. There's definitely more than what is contained in this video, so I encourage anyone who is curious about this story to give it a go.

You touched on a lot of themes that the series is about that I really agree with. I will say though, that all of the villains (mainly the main ones that can challenge Ken on some level or match him) are all great in their own rights and their personal tragedies help drive and fuel Ken's own character development as the series goes on. While the fights with the minor villains and such are definitely action pieces that can come off repetitive, every major villain Ken comes across that has a tragic backstory that you learn about through the flashbacks that shows how they became who they are and why. This leads you to empathize with them and understand why they became corrupted by the lust for power after the war that created the wasteland, and this extends to Ken's friends and allies as well. That type of storytelling really helped out other shonen manga writers to flesh out their characters further, with a manga like One Piece utilizing flashbacks similarly to tell its story. To Buronson and Tetsuo Hara's credit, I will say that while Kaioh looks similar to Raoh aesthetically, his motivations for being who he is and doing what he does is entirely different from Raoh, and is far more tragic since he's far more emotionally damaged from the experiences he went through than Raoh was. Raoh had it *good* compared to Kaioh growing up, whereas Kaioh was treated as a lesser man due to his bloodline being forgotten to the sands of time.

Before i watch the video i just want to say that fist of the north star is very similar to one piece. Heck one piece even makes multiple references to fist of the north star. Both stories have an imperfect world where the weak die and the strong survive. Humanity is crying out for a savior. The saviors are luffy and kenshiro. I also love how a lot of these stories are about stability and the cycle of violence and how you need strenght to protect and bring peace. Kenshiro uses his martial Arts to protect, serve, and hopefully one day bring humanity out of the age of power. The villians can't live in society with their murderous and fiendous ways. The idea of society Also to me comes up in other anime as well. Vegeta, freeza, cell, and kid buu can't function in normal society because of their violent ways. Goku and kenshiro both bring balance to their respective worlds. Another example of the cycle of violence is naruto. At first you can see how naruto thinks being a ninja is all fun and games but early on we see how dangerous the ninja world really is. The rogue ninja aren't really the villians because they are products of the cycle of violence. Zabuza, the akatsuki, itachi, garaa. All products of a violent world. In the ninja world violence and power brings recognition. This is what being a ninja is about(Naruto wants to be the hokage and be strong so he can be recognized). Using your violence to protect or destroy. I feel a lot of fiction is unintentionally pro gun. Using violence or the threat of violence for a good outcome of some kind.

It may sound incredible in the 2020's, but I remember regularly watching the old FotNS anime being aired on regional networks in Italy back when I was a kid in the early 90s. And while at the time we kids were mostly amazed by how cool Kenshiro and his martial arts were, I have later realized how much of an impact this series had on me: it taught that life can be tough and cruel and one must be strong to protect others, yet strenght should never be abused to pursue selfish and narcissistic desire, and that a man can embrace his emotions, be compassionate and cry without that being a sign of weakness.
This may sound extremely cheesy perhaps, but I believe that FotNS played a little part to make me the person I am today.
I actually just recently bought the beautiful new edition of the manga, which I can happily recommend to anyone (especially Berserk fans that are regular viewers of this channel), at least until the end of the Raoh arc.

I feel like some important context left out is the fact that FotNS was initially meant to be a 3 year run in SJ, but it was so successful that Hara and Buronson's contract was extended to 5 years. An early case of what I call "Shonen Jump syndrome". As a result, that awkward time jump/second half of the manga came into being. Huge fan of the series though, all its faults included.

I'm not a comic or anime fan. I'm just a Hokuto fan. HNK is not just entertainment... I grew up with it and love it very much. It’s so much deeper and teaches a lot of things. It's not just about a hero beating up bad guys and saving the day. His opponents’ stories are significant parts of HNK. They are often so emotional and heartbreaking, especially Shin and Souther’s. 🥺 They make HNK better and more distinct from other manga/anime stories. OMG, I watched Raoh vs. Toki chapter like 30 times and cried 30 times because of Raoh’s care for his little brother. 😭
In reality, those characters are more popular than Kenshiro!!! Zako characters are a pretty big part also. They create Hokuto culture and provide some laughs.

But, if you do have you ever thought about making a video on “What if hypothetically Guts became an Apostle?” And how powerful he would maybe become? I know there’s no way of actually knowing something like that. I honestly think about if Guts actually gave in one day do to something so very extreme that he had no other choice but to. For instance his whole crew(including Casca) were captured. And while they captured they were about to be killed maybe even one is killed. But, Guts has the behelit he carries with him in hand and he has no choice but to either let everyone that he’s been with for so long, and grown close with, and attachments to die like the og Band Of The Hawk. Or he has to use his behelit. I know Guts more than likely never would it’s his character type not to. But I just wonder about it from time to time.

I'd rather have Hokuto No Ken repetitive patterns than the ones from Dragon ball z where, in every single OAV Vegeta faints after one punch and goku kills the villain with one punch or a spirit bomb

Yeah I understand why it can feel so repetitive. The only explanation I can think of is when things get so bad and bleak, the solution also gets repetitive as a result.

i remeber when i was a kid watching this anime i used to laugh with some of my friend at how overpowered kenshiro was it was absurd even by anime standards he barely touches people and they explode but the atmosphere and the artstyle and the brutal gory nature of the anime its not bad but its not a masterpiece you can see the potentiel in that setting which kept me going but after the fight with rao its went down the hype didnt lead to anything and i dropped it after the timeskip

    • @SpScarletSpider

Ken's OP regarding the scrubs, but he's very weak at the start of the series and gets stronger over time because the actual martial artists he faces are on or close to his level depending on the situation. As for everything post-Raoh, while it is a high point in the series, the stuff that happens after the timeskip is extremely important. You learn of the origin of Hokuto Shinken and the origins of Ken, Raoh, and Toki's heritages, and you see the power struggles that occur after Raoh's death. IMO, you can't really look at the series with the idea of hype in mind (although everything about it is, for me at least); it's more of a personal journey of one man who has to bear the suffering and tragedy of the current world that he lives in.

So we wouldn't have Elden Ring without Dark Souls. No Dark Souls without Berserk. No Berserk without Hokuto no Ken. No Hokuto no Ken without Mad Max.

My younger brother was asking me for manga & anime recommendations, I said that my personal favorite manga is Fist of the North Star, & that I'd been a fan just about as long as I've been a martial artist, but that's the problem. From what I can tell, to people that don't train in, or at least understand Traditional Asian Martial Arts, FotNS might just look like hyper-masculine BS...
I mean, look at the English-dubbed version of the movie...

I remember a fucked up scene where Rei was annoyed that the chick with the red hair and bladed yoyo's was mentally strong or some shit, so he sliced off her clothes so she was standing there butt naked, and later Kenshiro said to her that "Maybe he confused you with his sister" .. or some shit like that.
Meanwhile Ken had this grin on his face while talking to her like wtf!.

    • @user-qu2si7gw2k

Rei did that because she was acting all manly, he didn't like seeing Mamiya acting manly. When they got outside, Rei confronted her saying that "she's a woman and she doesn't need to fight", which Mamiya responded "what you see isn't a woman. So Rei stripped her of her clothes, prompting her to cover up. Proving the fact that she's still a woman.

    • @SpScarletSpider
      @SpScarletSpider 3 роки тому +5

Rei doing that was his way to show her (as Apollo says) that the enemies they would face would still see her as a woman, and they would harm her in ways far worse than they would a man if they came across her on the battlefield. When Rei slices up her clothing, it gives her a jolt of reality, since by proclaiming that she wasn't a woman, she was denying who she was in that moment. It was basically Rei saying, "leave the fighting to us men and live a happy and peaceful life." Ken's statement to her afterward is so that she can understand Rei's intentions; Rei wasn't trying to be an asshole to her so much as he knew the dangers of what would happen to a woman since his own sister had been kidnapped (and probably tortured/raped for amusement). Rei respected her for her strength for wanting to avenge her sibling (like he did for his own), but he wanted her to channel her inner strength and live her life as a woman rather than a warrior. Which she ultimately understands later on.

@@user-qu2si7gw2k You did a good job with your post, but you missed some things that needed to be touched upon. I get that you don't want to read it and that's cool, but there are others who would, and I'm allowed to give my own perspective on it just as much as you are. Even if we came to a similar conclusion, it's not a big deal if others reinforce your opinion and add more to it, lol.

The final arc actually got me tearing up. Focusing on Ken,Mamiya,Bat and Lin was an inspired choise
