Good video, I tested this last night as well and found that when you are leaving (after the garage has auto closed), you need to make sure the Garage Icon disappears (which it does as soon as you get far enough away from your house) for auto open to work. Agree with all other comments about people not keeping this after free trial.
Thanks for the tip. Yes I had to be away a certain range. It works flawlessly now. Opens when I get closer and close when I leave as it is intended to work.
Great video, thanks. Like most of the other comments, this whole 'subscription based' business model for hardware products has reached new heights of ridiculousness. Having monthly subscriptions (forever) for garage doors, and doorbells, etc, is just a farce. Will there be a monthly subscription for my lawn mower and fridge next? There needs to be either a consumer backlash against this nonsense, or consumer protection laws that prevent being held financially hostage forever for such purchases.
Nobody is keeping this after the free trial....NOBODY at the current pricing model. You can't expect people to pay for something they can do for free with very little effort. The project managers or whatever will look at the data that shows how many people are not keeping it then adjust pricing. Current pricing 1 year $45, 5 years $179, 10 years $299. Fairly priced is 1 year $19.99 3 years $49.99 5 years $79.99, 6-10 years $59.99.
I think you're wrong. You can use this more than just opening or closing as you come in. A friend of mine uses it for deliveries often. I'll pay the annual as I hate reaching in my cubby hole for the clicker. Putting on visor just eventually ruins that anyway. Added expense sure. Just drink one less coffee or pop a week.
I bought the myQ retrofit kit for my garage when we got our first tesla because it was only $30 vs the $300 per car on tesla homelink and I didn’t want an ugly external remote in my car. I got excited to see tesla integrating myQ, but the subscription platform kinda defeats the purpose of it being a viable alternative. The phone app is still free, but ironically, it takes longer to take your phone out and use the app than to use the external opener. So I’m just back to using the remote I was trying to avoid the whole time 😂
If you plan to keep your car for 10years then get the $350 home link from Tesla which you cannot transfer to another car. Otherwise this sub is good if you change cars every 4 years and you can move it to the new car.
@@MyGadgetsWorld Hard to quantify the need for something that we could already do manually for free. People who really wanted this automated got the garage opener installed by tesla for 350. That stays with the car forever. For the rest now they have subscription model which won't work.
My 2018 M3P came with Homelink standard. I have a MyQ connected garage and have the (free) phone app. Homelink can open as you approach... I also was excited for the MyQ connection, but the pricing is ridiculous! That's not even a "I'll think about it" price, that's just straight up ridiculous. Especially for something that's free on a mobile device.
Worked every-time for me leaving and coming back. Got 2 Teslas tied to 1 myQ account. Worth the cost! Glad I didn't pay for Teslas Homelink. That stays with the car., MyQ is not tied to the car and connects to multiple cars. The 10year cost is still cheaper than 1 Tesla Homelink cost.
After hearing about this free MyQ upgrade, I bailed on my HomeLink install (AU$460) which was due to be installed today! Talk about being just in time (thanks Tesla). Now I just have to price the MyQ opener add-on for the Merlin door opener... I hope it's cheap ;-)
The bummer part about the function of the app in the car is that it activates the warning alarm sound and it takes a while before the garage closes. Where if you just use the garage door clicker, it’s much faster.
The subscription covers multiple Teslas. We have two so the subscription cost is technically half. Worth it imo especially when considering the cost of the inferior home link option $350 from Tesla.
Definitely take it inside with you if you park outside. Someone will just smash your window and open your garage or steal it and they can come back for the contents of your house later when you’re not home!!
At that subscription price you might as well add the Homelink option to the car, $350 fitted by a Tesla ranger. No more subscriptions and could potentially get some of the cost back when it's time to sell.
From the tesla manual Auto-Close: HomeLink triggers when the Model X shifts from Park into Reverse, and moves at least 23 feet (seven meters) in Reverse.
Having replaced the door opener a while back, and noting the Tesla offering of the connection, I've thought about adding it. The installation is simple enough, but now that I know there is a fee, I am like most and not willing to pay it--especially given the placement of my opener button. Using a piece of heavy duty (it's a little wider) stick on Velcro, my door button is installed near the bottom edge and centered on the back side of the screen. It can't be seen from anywhere, yet it is very easy to instantly find and activate, and the Velcro allow removal for battery change or whatever. I suppose automatic closing is nice, but if I didn't remember closing the door, the myQ app on my phone will tell me whether it is or not.
This is ridiculous. I have a MyQ opener, which I can control from an app on my phone. I almost never use the app on the phone because it is slow to open and close the door. I do not understand why I would have to pay to open the garage door from Tesla, but I can open it free from my phone. I can also open it from all of my cars using Homelink, which is also built into Teslas. You can also buy a remote control opener for a few dollars online. No way I am paying for a subscription to control my own garage door from my own car. Tesla and Liftmaster: please concentrate on making your product better and not so much on how to grab as much money as you can. It turns me off!
What I want to know is does the car know the difference when garage door is open vs close ? Say if Garage door is already open.. and you are coming home will the car still send command and close the door or will it not do anything as the garage is already open..
Model X works just fine. If I need to open or close remotely, the myQ app doesn't require a subscription. Would I pay for this for a tiny bit of extra convenience over opening the app in my phone? Sure, but most I'd pay is 50 cents a month.
can you just directly press "open" on the tesla screen to open and close it? or is it only possible through the phone for the free/ no subscription version?
Thanks for the video. Waiting on the Holiday Update. I purchased Homelink from Tesla $350 and had it installed in the Y by Tesla. Price includes installation at your house. It works the same but does not have an annual subscription. I also have a myQ app on my phone but like you not sure about another subscription to pay for. I wonder if Tesla will stop selling Homelink now? To bad Tesla Premium annual connection cannot include myQ.
I had the free version since the holidays. My Q garage door opener has opened twice in the past two days without me pushing a button. While I’m sitting in my house, with the car in the garage. And so I just unlinked it from my Tesla.
2 Questions: 1. Does your phone app cause the garage light to flash and play the loud beep when closing? 2. If so, does the Tesla MyQ feature do that too?
I’ve noticed that the Tesla app sometimes causes the garage lights to flash (with a delay for closing the door) and sometimes it doesn’t. Also noticed that the auto close feature is unreliable. Sometimes you get an “error” and it doesn’t close. Hopefully will be fixed with a software update.
Looks cool, but try a tailwind, might be an option too, no subscription, just some setup. However, this auto close right away is neat... I think it is 100% worth auto open, so convenient.....
My homelink in my model S opens and closes automatically too. No need for a subscription. I wouldn't pay $45 per year for the automatic open. It doesn't even work every time.
@@stephenchan7065 They have auto close, but you have to drive a little further away, I do not use the auto close, I just use my homelink, but not in a Tesla.
Yes, the Tailwind auto-closes too far away to be useful. I'd want to still be in sight of the door to see it going down, but that simply isn't the case with Tailwind, so I just continue to use the provided remote.
Once you arrive home and park in the garage how are you closing the garage ? I tried multiple times to tap the garage door to close and it doesn’t work? Thanks
I had myQ app in my iPhone since 2019. I never pay for subscription. It comes with my garage door opener. Is the subscription specific to Tesla MyQ? I have the Tesla garage door opener hardware for my Model X. I don't need the MyQ app in my car if it requires subscription.
@MyGadgetsWorld I just set it up. Once linked to my account, it saw both doors, and I could pick which door I wanted to have auto open when I leave and arrive. Pretty nice.
I don’t have to pay for all that, my model s does all that with regular program!! Just program your garage opener to your tesla!! It will open and closed automatic u can also open and close using tesla app
Can't you configure a garage door opener like the one on the visor to the car already? Get the same coming home and leaving features. At least I did in my 2018 MS with a non-myQ opener.
So I have the 30 day trial after buying a new Liftmaster garage door opener with myQ equipped. Everything is setup and linked. Unfortunately, the door does not open as I approach the house, but it does close when I leave. Is this because the wifi is strong upon leaving, but rather weak when returning to the home? I live in an area that is not great for cell tower strength. Of course I have the premium connectivity from Tesla, but even as I park my car in the driveway coming home, nothing happens. There is no option to press and open manually even on the Tesla. Can anyone help? Yes, I unlinked and linked the account back, reset my Tesla many times, still nothing.
I am curious if you own two tesla and they both connected to that garage. If you are charging one with door open, what will happen to the garage door if you drive away with the second tesla?
Just a comment but you might not want to be showing people exactly where you live. Because the map showed so much I was curious and it literally took me 1 minute to get your street address from this video. You might want to take this video down and repost with the map blurred out. Just a thought.
For some reason it only closes my garage door about 30% of the time. But it opened it every time. Whatever. I let the trial expire and won’t be renewing it
I use my apple watch to open and close my door The only good thing about is safety. Someone cant just break your window and open the door. The remote makes easy access for criminals

If the sub price is about $20, I might want to get that. I could use the MYQ app to remote access or use the opener. But the auto close/open is good thou.
I have MYQ and linked it to the Brinks alarm system. It is free. I was considering to link the MyQ to Tesla instead of alarm system. But wait, what? i need to pay for linking to tesla while i can link it for free to other systems , e.g. Samsung smart hub or alarm system? What logic is that? I passed.
Although I have myQ available I am not going to keep this linked to my car after the trial, Homelink gets the job done and if I find out I didn't close my garage I can just do it through the app. Whoever decided on having consumers paying for this is not doing it right.
Cheaper long-term to get the home link installed IMO. I hate subscriptions. Why has the millennial generation turned the economy into a Columbia House and the BMG Music Service? Enough with the subscriptions.
If it was free, I would use it, but I already have that app on my iPhone so it cost me nothing to use from my iPhone and I just keep the clicker inside the car in the box. Definitely won’t be paying for it.

This should just be free. $50/year to avoid pressing a button is crazy nickel-and-diming on a luxury car.
I passed.
A subscription for a garage door opener? Pfft!
Seriously. It should have been free. :)
Although I have myQ available I am not going to keep this linked to my car after the trial, Homelink gets the job done and if I find out I didn't close my garage I can just do it through the app. Whoever decided on having consumers paying for this is not doing it right.
Couldn’t agree more. I will be canceling after trial. Not worth any extra penny
Not everyone has Homelink like you 🙂. I think Homelink comes with Model X and S by default but for Model 3 and Y I think it cost around $500
Mine doesn’t work well at all. I’ll stay old school and push a button myself
You don't need if the tesla is connected with your own mobile hotspot
Cheaper long-term to get the home link installed IMO. I hate subscriptions. Why has the millennial generation turned the economy into a Columbia House and the BMG Music Service?
Enough with the subscriptions.
If it was free, I would use it, but I already have that app on my iPhone so it cost me nothing to use from my iPhone and I just keep the clicker inside the car in the box. Definitely won’t be paying for it.
Old school and press the button yourself. At 9.99/year, yes. Otherwise, nah.
Exactly. I am not gonna pay for another subscription. Buttons work just fine. Happy holidays
Tesla may as well have not put this feature in.
Literally
I rather do this than homelink but $300 for 10 year. Wow.. maybe at $100 for 10 years and that’s still too much
Sure is cool for snobs that don't want to be seen with a garage door opener clipped to their sun visor.
Neat Idea and convenience, but PAY to open your garage door? Totally ridiculous.
The subscription is a joke, you pay for the garage opener already and that should be included.
Thanks
Funny how Tesla did not mention there would be a subscription…👉💩
Does not work for MyQ gate operators, for those of us with driveway gates, this is absolutely useless
Why did Tesla waste resources to even integrate with MyQ if they are going to charge ridiculous $...SMH
