On my second trip to Rome I stayed on the Aventine hill, right next door to Santa Prisca, and wandered around the neighborhood, found the Orange Garden and the Key Hole without even knowing what they are, purely serendipity and recommendation from the kind front desk person. The hotel is closed and now seems to be a fancier version, and the garden and the keyhole are full of people at sunset when I was there in the summer of 21.

I think the Aventine is a wonderful place to stay. It's quiet yet central and close to many of Rome's attractions. And there is not so much to see on the Aventine that it overwhelms you - it's a lovely place to stroll and enjoy the quiet and beauty. I'm glad you had such a nice time!

worth mentioning Shelly and Keats are buried in the protestant cemetery, Keats having spent his last months in a house next to the Spanish steps

Absolutely! Yes I love to see their graves in the cemetery. And the Keats Shelley hour is definitely worth a visit!

Elyssa, I must say how impressed I am with this particular video! I have never heard of the famous "keyhole". Not that I know a lot about Rome's hidden treasures but this one was so unique! Rome seems so endless with discovery. I have no idea how long you have lived in Rome but do you think you have discovered and seen everything it has to offer? You're so lucky to live there. I'm sure Rome/Italy has its' challenges and frustrations but to live in Rome and live amongst the history would be a piece of Heaven. Thank you!

Thanks a lot for watching and for your kind comments! I'm glad if you learned something new with this video or any of my videos! There is so much to discover - the Romans say "Non basta una vita" - A lifetime is not enough! And I agree. I feel there is always something new to discover. I was just at the Vatican Museums for the umpteenth time last week and saw new things inside the room of Constantine. I've lived here since 2001 and I'm still learning and discovering!

That place is very underestimated indeed. Also nice to pass by on the way from Circus Maximus towards Testaccio.

You are so right! Even when I filmed this in peak summer season, on a weekend, it was as quiet as you saw in the video. And as you said, it's so close to Circus Maximus and Testaccio, it's easy to stop by!

Your vlogs get better and better. you mentioned augury. According to The Rome Guide by Guido Lucentini, S. Maria Ara Coeli may have been the site of the office of the Augurs.. High up on the third column on the left is a hole completely through the column and was probably used for ritual sky gazing in the ancient Auguraculum. A great little story of ancient Rome

First of all, thank you for your very kind words. I am grateful you enjoy my video and the work I put into it. I try to make them interesting and hope to share something people may not already know.
Second of all, thank you so much for the tidbit about the Augurs and S. Maria Ara Coeli. I will go back to that church ASAP and look for this column!
I also just bought the book you recommended. I hadn't heard of it but it looks great and I love reading books by knowledgable authors, especially when the books are about Rome!

It really is. I filmed this in high season on a weekend and it was just as busy as you saw it in the video. Or rather, not busy.

Fantastic video. Just want to say thank you because I watched several of your videos and read you website before our recent trip to Rome. It was all incredible helpful. Rome has SO much to see and the way you break days into exploring sections of the city is the real secret I wish I knew the first time. We can't wait to come back. Oh and we ate at one of your recommend pizzerias twice and it was the best! Grazie!

Pretty sure I already wrote that but ... your videos are awesome !
I spent a month in Rome in 2011, planning to go again in 2 years for another month or more.
They were just starting to dig out the buildings of the Circus Maximus back then, the Domus Aurea was closed ...arggg
I think I should just move there ... thanks again for all the info you give us in those videos !!!!!
