These young men come from areas of high crime and this choir was formed to give them a higher goal in life. I'm so, so proud of what their conductor has put together here!!

One of my sons was part of that performance. He went on to study musical theatre and music technology at university and college.
Only Boys Aloud is still going, for boys aged 14-19. The choir was originally put together as a bit of an experiment. It worked :)

It's also worth mentioning that none of these boys had to audition for the choir. Most of them could sing in tune but not all, because the whole point was to get the lads doing something. They rehearsed - and still do - in their local areas across south Wales and came together for performances.
Each year 32 boys audition for OBA Academi (Welsh spelling of - go on, guess) and the concerts they put on at the end of a 'boot camp' week are spectactular.

As a Welsh woman, watching this choir, makes me so proud of my country & these boys fro keeping the tradition. Yes women and girls are allowed, it's just that male choirs are dying out, but for us it's important to keep the tradition, Wales is known as the land of song. They're singing in our native language Welsh.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Sang this song at least twice a week in school assembly in Ammanford between 1970 and 1976. I have never heard it sung so well. Truly excellent direction from the conductor and a wonderful performance from the lads who I am sure have used this as a springboard for their futures. Blinkin' marvellous.

      I don't ask for a luxurious life,
the world's gold or its fine pearls,
I ask for a happy heart,
an honest heart, a pure heart.
A pure heart full of goodness
Is fairer than the pretty lily,
None but a pure heart can sing,
Sing in the day and sing in the night.
If I wished for worldly wealth,
      It would swiftly go to seed;
The riches of a virtuous, pure heart
      Will bear eternal profit.
      (Chorus)
      Evening and morning, my wish
Rising to heaven on the wing of song
For God, for the sake of my Saviour,
To give me a pure heart.

So, the lyrics translate roughly (with a little bit of poetic license) as:
I don't ask for a life of luxury, all the gold in the world nor all the pearls in the ocean; I ask only for a heart that's happy; a heart that's honest; a pure heart.
A pure heart full of joy is more precious than the prettiest lily; only a pure heart can sing through the day and night.

Male voice choir's are one of the things that is known about and their is nothing on Earth than hearing Welsh Men and Young Welsh Men sing. It is heavenly and powerful as well. It has absolutely nothing to do with the feelings of women it is a Welsh tradition that should go on for thousands of years as it has been. We in Britain have a very good public transportation system so the Welsh lads probably travelled down to London by train. There is no need to fly between cities here in Britain as we have trains and coaches. 💂‍♂️💂‍♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

I’m a Welsh woman, Wales is well known for our male voice choirs. And us women really want to keep the tradition alive forever. There is nothing like the all male voice choir & it’s ours, just like our Welsh National Anthem, our Welsh language. All through history England has tried to get rid of our language & traditions. Even punished severely those caught speaking it. They banned it, but we may be a small country but we will fight for what’s ours. It’s so good to see these young men keeping the tradition alive. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿CYMRU AM BYTH🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

The tone of the Welsh voice has a very sing song quality to it and Wales has a strong tadition of male voice choirs which has diminished as many were part of mining communities many of which disappered whent eh mines were closed down. the organisor of this choir had his own demons and suffered terrible depression and tried to take his own life once because of his sexuality. Another choir Only Men Aloud won a national choir compertition some years ago.

I am shocked when Simon says he never heard this song before. It seems that the American doesn't sing this most wonderful in their church.
I am from North-east India and we used to sing Calon Lan in our church from our childhood but in our own mother tongue.
We are a small community called Biate that lived in Northeast India and we have Calon Lan translated into our tribal dialects and we are taught this song in the sunday school service.
It's one of the most Christian popular and loved songs within our community.
