      @@RETROHardware Yes most were exposed to bad airflow which is a problem with passive cards. Also have a 6600 here that barely ran the electrolytic capacitors have all but also gone up. The 6800 but many seem to have died.

    Even with as much as tech has moved on since, I still have some sentimental love for the 7950gt in particular. I've hung on to my pcie edition since. But always wanted to have the agp version, too; didn't even know it ever had an agp edition until much, much later.

  • @zubryk11

    Layers of PCB may be separated because of cold connection points. You know, people put the GPU to owen, high temp and its sometimes repeaired. But when some moistrue stuck in the PCB, they poped out and make some bubbles on the PCB.
    Great video as always! Greetings.

    Ah, the era of dubious shroud decorations and electrolytic caps trying to pass as solid state... I remember when every mid range and up videocard appeared to be decorated with warriors or something like that (dog/wolf warriors, in XFX's case).

    Had to destroy like half of the 6800. Gave it to some hardware guy. He tried to repaired it, but of course failed. The cause was problems from extreme overheating.

    Separated PCB layers means probably that someone was trying to fix it in oven or with heat pistol, that happens when you heat it too much while trying to resolder GPU core. We can thank to stupid ban for lead solder which is why these GPUs have so many cold joints now and why people are trying to heat it. Older GPUs from 90s are immortal.
    BTW, I stopped with oiling fans, I am doing it only when it's really needed, because very often it makes things just worse than before. 🙂 Instead of trying to fix old fans, I started to installing new ones, you can mostly solder original cable to new fan, but problem is that it's hard to get all those weird fan sizes like 40mm, 50mm and 60mm now.
    This GPU was definitely cooked, I've never seen so many destroyed capacitors on one card, it makes no sense.

      @@warrax111 I think it has to do with the capacitors not being used and receiving a charge for many years. Capacitors actually DO go bad and often leak from NOT being used for a long time. I had this happen to me on a graphics card that was actually "brand new" and only tried a few times before I stored it in it's original box for many years. Nearly all the caps leaked and I had to replace them from not enough use. It runs fine now! If you are lucky though, you may get the card working after a few power ups and be good to go...at least for awhile anyway hopefully. This can happen on older retro PCs and add-on cards too. It's actually good to "exercise" your electronic equipment from time to time by using it and gently charge up any spare capacitors you may have for use as replacement parts too from time to time. 👍👍

    • @warrax111
      @warrax111 Рік тому +1

      @@arthurmann578 I have about 70 motherboards and about 100 graphic cards, some of them even from 1995, so 30 year old and it didn't happen on any of those. I mean, no capacitor leaked from not being used.
      I will not "re-use it" , from time to time, that would be crazy. Time consuming.
      Maybe some crappy capacitors can do it, don't know... didn't happen to me.

    • @arthurmann578
      @arthurmann578 Рік тому

      @@warrax111 It was really weird having like six out if eight caps just going bad and leaking when I bought the card brand new back in probably 2004 or so and only tested it briefly maybe twice before putting it back in the box. They are those small all aluminum ones. I had to replace them with much larger ones at the time, but it worked out OK! I can see what you mean about not wanting to test out so many graphics cards! To be honest, I really still don't bother myself and just fix them when and if I ever have a future problem. For the most part, it is rare even amongst all the hardware I own too. Guess it's also just the quality or LACK there of of the caps themselves. Remember the "great capacitor plague" of the earlier 2000s? I always come across boards from that era with the leaky caps.
