I live in Prague, I was born here so I can't see it as beautifully as you guys do, because I'm used to it. But it makes me so glad to know there are people who enjoyed this beautiful country to the fullest. History, nature, culture - it's worth it and I thank you for this video, it makes me proud to be part of this country.
Awesome video, guys! Def cool finding where your family is from! We have explored all over the Czech countryside and love it!! The Czech Republic is so underrated when it comes to nature!
What a strange feeling when I was browsing something on youtube and this video showed to me. Can't believe you've visited my hometown :D it's so far from NZ! Hope you enjoyed it, good luck on future journeys :)
A very long way to come haha! We travel full-time though so made sure we could find time this year to visit. Hope we did a good job of showing your home town ❤️
Aww that’s so cool!! 😢💕Made me teary-eyed and overwhelmed. Your family will be so amazed and happy of your discovery, Daneger!! Cheers to you both on your beautiful adventures!! 🎉🥂💯🏰
This is totally mindblowing for me. I just found your channel by total accident and one of the first video is partly about my former hometown. I lived in Rožnov for 8 years before we moved to Brno with my family. You guys are so cool, enjoy your stay in the Czech republic ^^
check out Roznov pod Radhostem, which is close by Frenstat, there's a great museum with original homes from the 1700s showcasing the way of life in those times
you should totally try Frgále - big pie with different flavour like blueberries, poppy seed, curd, pear etc. its from this area bakingtheloveofmylife.blogspot.cz/2014/02/cr-valasske-frgaly-czech-republic.html
This is a such a wonderful video. I love all your videos guys but this one is really special. I am so sorry that nobody was able to give you some more information. I live in Canada, but I was born in Prague and have been in Frenstat many times. So thanks for sharing this cool story and many greetings to New Zealand - you fellow Czech countrymen.
Very nice video again! I'm happy you did not just stay in Prague, but that you also made a trip outside of Prague, a pity that you did not visit more towns, castles and so on. The Czech Republic really has a lot to offer. Otherwise, only the old people could help you in that village, but they do not know English. Old people have old books, photographs, they can remember names.
It's kinda cool, that you have been in my hometown Rožnov pod Radhoštěm near Frenštát. I didn't expected that. What a nice story. It's amazing that you have traveled such a distance even though you knew there would be nothing. But you knew the history about that place and that's why it is so special.
This was really interesting and exciting because my husband and I will be doing the same thing in September. His great, great, great grandfather lived in a tiny farming hamlet about an hour outside of Prague. Love your vlogs! You are a darling couple!
Thanks for taking us on a journey back through your whanau heritage daneger! Im stoked you were able track it back to a specific place! Awesome stuff!!!!
It is nice to see the countryside and the fact that you were able to visit this village where some of your family lived...Thanks for sharing....Look forward to seeing the beer tour!
You should have tried to check the church books. If they survived that war, they should have info about your family. I don't know, of course if they would allow you to look at them...
I’m from the Czech republic. These books were removed from churches after the war and are stored in the designated local town halls at the office called “Matrika”. I think that now, when they’re in a contact with the local person who is searching for her ancestors herself, they already know this stuff.

i just watched some of your vlogs and I need to say, you guys are doing some wonderful content. In two weeks from now, I will travel to Prague again. After staying there for a few couple of days, my next destinations will be Dresden, Berlin and Denmark. I cant wait for that... Greeting from northern Germany!
I have sumbled upon your Czech part of vlog and watched all of its episodes and I have to say I love your way of experiencing countries. As my fianceé would say, you are not tourist but travellers. Not only moving from one tourist sight to another, but willing to enjoy the place, to go outside from city centre (saying that I was surprised that you experienced mostly overpriced restaurants :) ). And seeing you travelling across the country to small town was delight. Total different perspective, more genuine I suppose :) Thanks for your travel vlog, your style of filming is great and can't wait to visit New Zealand in a few months as a honeymoon trip :)
You guys are so cool! I really like your vlogs! It is a pity that you didn´t have more time to explore other parts of Czech country. Prague is so tourist, but above all, South Moravia- the wine region with the Pálava Hills, the town of Mikulov and the Lednice-Valtice area, lots of ancient fairytale castles all over the county - Bouzov, Zvíkov, Karlštejn, Křivoklát. And the cities of- Český Krumlov, Kutná Hora, Telč, Litomyšl and more...all monuments of UNESCO world heritage! And the nature of our national parks is charming! You must definitely come back! Cheers, I love you!
great video :) :) just small detail .. If your familly lived there in 18th century (1700-...) then they didnt live in Czechoslovakia .. they lived in the Bohemian (Czech) Kingdom and Dutchy of Morava ... in this century we was part of Austria-Hungary Pact and "modern" Czechoslovakia was founded in 1918 after the Great war (or 1st World War) by Tomáš Gaurige Masaryk..our 1st President . but thats only detail ... enjoy the Czech Republic and drink Czech beer :D :) (not Kozel ... its worst beer..) :D :D :)
Kia ora, I was amazed to randomly see your video while googling Frenstat to see what it's like. I'm also kiwi and my great great grandparents John & Amelia Bartos were from Frenstat they immigrated possibly round the same time. They lived in Waimate and are buried in the Waimate cemetery. Thanks for sharing....looks like a beautiful place.
Great video! In case you have some spare time whilst in that part of the country, it might not be a bad idea to visit the open-air museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm just to get an idea of what the house of your ancestor might have looked like (and the historical architecture of that region in general). :)
We did the same type of thing in Croatia. My Croatian relatives took me to the Dalmatian coast slightly to the east of Zadar to a little village called Rovajnska where my grandfather was born. There's a whole bunch of Roncevics there and also a church with a whole bunch of graves of my ancestors.
Your emotions come across very well on camera through your voice and facial expressions !!!!! I think that's what makes your blogs very personal !!!! Good luck !!!!!
Great vlog! You really got across the feelings that you were going through at that moment of finding the spot where your relatives once lived. You may have thought of this already, but there are bound to be local historians or public photo archives that might have photos of the town back in the day, so at least you could get an idea of what the place looked like then, if not find a shot of the actual street the family once lived in.
This is a cool video. Thanx for sharing. I will do the same thing next month. To Prague, Havlickuv Brod, Humpolec, and other parts of Czech to track my family back to the 1800s. I hope you enjoyed Czech as much as you could. I'm half czech and the last time i was there was in 1992 😅
That is so cool - I loved watching it as I just found out that most of my ancestors also are from this town. It is on my bucket list. Thank you for showing the maps - that is something I am going to research too.
Very cool journey today! I especially love that small town center you discovered. I imagine the people were very laid back there? Too bad you couldn't find anyone that were either distant family or someone who knew about your family and/or could share stories passed down thru the generations. I guess that was a very very long time ago so its hard to find but that's the best part of researching family roots is when you get to talk to people and hear interesting stories. Very nice!
Would have been so awesome to have some meet ups lined up in advance, but we've struggled to locate anyone directly related to us before hand. Also, our name has actually changed/been westernised and the original name is relatively common. So in reality, maybe loads of people there are relatives haha
When I first clicked on one of your videos (about Poland) I thought you're Polish or of Polish descent. It definitely shows that you have Slavic genes in you, Dane.
Hello guys, I'am from Valašské Meziříčí which is located nearby Freňštát pod Radhoštěm and if you are still somewhere around here go check the Pustevny. It is a nice hill with a wonderful view a it's really close to Frenštát. You can go up with the car or take the cableway. It's a really nice trip and you can visit the Radegast statue up there.:)
My family is also from Frenstat pod Rhadhostem as well as a smaller town southeast called Trojanovice. I had been looking into the towns and came across y'all's video. It was really cool to see a first hand experience like that and I hope to have one similar one day
there are some really amazing nature and culture trips around Radhošť - nature on Radhošť itself and there is an open-air museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm
Hi, I started watching you when you were in Bali because I will fly there in a few days. You're really cool so I started to subscribe your channel, I would never think that in a few weeks I'll see your videos from Czech Republic, where I live. That really cool. I greet you from China and wish you nice and safe travel.
Your visit to your ancestors" place must be flowing with emotions. I would do the same, given the chance to visit my great great grandfather's place in Portugal. Beer flowing next episode. Godspeed and keep safe lovely couple.
Such a cool thing to be able to do! I bet planning the trip was just as interesting as well, your doing well to add a personal note to the vlogs which is why i'm sure most people watch! Just been catching up with all your recent vids and i'm enjoying your series in eastern Europe also purchased your book and I'm about half way through, ill let you know how it goes (nice so far!)
I've been to Berlin and only a small town in Czech so its nice to see what Prague had to offer from your vids. If your doing eastern Europe, i'd recommend visiting Croatia if you have spare time, its amazing!
Absolutely lovely video - I used to travel to Czech villages often (I taught ESL to village kids) but haven't been out of Prague recently, so nice to see exploring off the beaten path and with such an interesting angle, to find where your ancestors lived! If you're still in Prague now & have any questions about anything, I'm a walking tour guide here and would be happy to help :) (anyone reading this is welcome to ask too :P) I love showing off my beautiful adopted home, so let me know if you want to meet up for coffee or an informal tour - I think Prague has a lot to offer beyond the Old Town & Castle (though those are great), like Holesovice, Zizkov, or Vinohrady :)
Great video, we are travelling to Frenstat pod Radhostem in June 2020 to trace my great great grandparents who migrated to Napier in 1875. My question is where did you get most of your information about your relatives from, as I seem to have hit a brick wall.
Fun fact...there's "Příbor" town direction on a blue sign at 2:19...that's a birthplace of Sigmund Freud, the famous neurologist/psychologist. Příbor has about 8400 inhabitants and there's a renovated Freud birthhouse/museum open 9 to 5 all week except Monday, entrance 40 crowns if you're still around. I havent been there though, so don't throw stones at me later:P
Good job on figuring out the exact place. Back then this place was part of the Austrian empire, hence dual languages with German and Czech. My family also made a family tree dating back to the 16th century, but it was much easier for me to visit the origin since they all stayed in Bavaria for hundreds of years lol. Really enjoyed that video! 😊
I wasjust serching my family home town frenstat and your story sound similar to mine. My family moved from there to new zealand around the same time as yours did.
Your really lucky going back to the ancestral home where you people are from sometimes it helps to know where your from to know where your going in life the discovery and the investigation all good well done.
I understand what you've felt in this video. That's exactly my reaction when we visited a place in the Northern Philippines where my great great grandfather used to live. :)
Who were your people?? Mine came from exactly the same place.. also came over to Chch NZ... Szeliga/Kubala/Lidiac/Lidak.. Some turned up in Oxford, North Canterbury..and stayed in Bennetts Road housing quarters.. as did mine.
So you're actually an Österreicher in the end ;) Frankstadt unter dem Radhoscht. [Franshtut pod Rahoshtem]. Let's say Frankstown Under Mt.Radhosht. You do look like a guy from Czech Republic :) No wonder you like to wander around. The very first hiking club in Bohemia was founded in Frenštat in 1884 which "(re)discovered" most beautiful parts of the Beskyds. It seems there has been a long tradition of sporting activity such as skiing, volleyball, football and horse riding in Frenštat. That explains a lot :)
I don't know if you are still in CZ but if you are absolutly must try "Svičková". I think you already had, but pilsner urquell is one from the best beer in czech. Most people don't drink coca cola often, we have czech alternative "Kofola". And in shop you buy czech wafer my favorites is "Tatranky" or "Fidorka" they cost like half euro. Sorry for my english :) and Honest Prague Guide have amazing videos about czech. :D
Could you tell me where you got the map of Franhstadt at 4;02 in this video? My dad was also from there, and I went to visit in 2019. I'm working on a photo essay book and thought that would be a nice addition. Please and thanks. Kathy
Yeah, been following you since like, 3K subscribers... now you're almost 30K. You guys became one of my inspirations for travelling. A lot of places, cafes, hotels, airbnb, you've been... are on my bucket list for this year and next. That Bali place where you got engaged... I'll copy cat you one day, hahaha. Thanks a lot for sharing your lives.
That's so awesome mate. I did think your name looked familiar, but as you can imagine we do get a decent amount of comments! Thanks for following along with us for so long and seeing us grow, hope your digging the videos as much now as you did back then 🙏🏼 Also hope you get to hit a lot of the same spots as we have!
Thanks. I don't usually comment much, so don't worry, hahaha. The quality of videos now is as same or better than before, but it's you guys, that make it interesting. I'm from Europe and I know it quite well, so I look forward to some Asia or NZ videos later. But... never expected you to go and dig your past in some remote Bohemia village, hahaha... so that's cool. I'll keep watching and you guys stay awesome.
Since you are in Moravia now, I suggest to stop by in Brno. its sort of student city, very chill, much less turist and you can find some great modern architecture like vila Tugendhat. very close by is a karst area, with macocha gorge and possible boat tour in Speleothem caves. and if you enjoy castles, there is just plenty around, such as Lednice - Valtice castle - park complex.
Hey! If you want to try some local beer, I would recommend microbreweries, we have dozens of them Here's a map: www.pividky.cz/mapa.php?lang=en You can stop somewhere on your way to Prague (If you're heading back there) I would definitely recommend brewerie Kácov (near the highway Prague - Brno) or some from the north (Kocour, Cvikov)
My 1st cousin 4 times removed Tomas Kubala immigrated to New Zealand from Frenstat. 2nd great Grandfather Petr Kubala was killed in mining accident and his widow immigrated to Fayette County Texas. Petr and Tomas were 1st cousins.
We are from Texas and Sam's (the guy on our channel) family is from Frenstat! Last name Kubala! I bet you are in relation to him!

Wow! I am from Roznov pod Radhostem! I saw your videos earlier and then you visited our city, this is crazy! You should visit Brno too, I study here and I love this city! (also beer is here cheaper than in Prague :D )
As you said in some previous videos... Many people in Czech republic cant speak english. The truth is that old people were learning russian (because of russian occupation during 20th century) But Iam sure that almost 100% young people will at least speak a little bit. Most people (uder 30y) can speak english. And lastly your ancestors lived in Austria-Hungary (In czech part). Czechslovakia was established in 1918 after WW1 and dissolved in 1993 to Czech republic and Slovakia
Nice video, just one historical fact... Your ancestors couldn't be from czechoslovakia if they left in 1800's Czechoslovakia was from 1918 till 1993, so your ancestors were from Moravia (eastern part of Czech Republic) which belong for thousand year to kingdom of Bohemia (Western part of Czech Republic including Prague), and Kingdom of Bohemia together with Markraviate of Moravia were parts of Austrian empire in that time. :)
Hi there! it's crazy to see people travel to this small town where i practically grew up :) btw if you need more help on the spot, feel free to message me cause i still visit my parents regularly so i can contact or visit somebody in frenstat or translate something for you :) good luck and enjoy your travels!
That's so nice of you - thank you so much! I'll see if my family have any other info they find or need translated etc, unlikely, but really appreciate the offer. Thanks so much.
Hey! I know you have a million comments here, so you likely won't read this. I am an American cousin of yours. My family is also from Frenštát, left in the 1870s. You have many many many many cousins here in Texas. There was a kind of diaspora from this place at that time, and many people went to Texas. I would love to get in touch and find out how we connect. I know we are distant cousins because the spot you pointed at on the indikační skici is where my ancestors also lived.
i couldn't figure it out your accents not really Australian not really British but i always thought nz sound like my neighbor's auzzy but it's distinctively different, i like your channel, haven't been in Poland for 29 years
We probably don't sound all that Kiwi at the moment because we travel so much, but theres definitely a big difference between Aus and NZ... at least both countries think so :)
Thanks for watching guys!

Awesome video, guys! Def cool finding where your family is from! We have explored all over the Czech countryside and love it!! The Czech Republic is so underrated when it comes to nature!
Definitely agree - so stunning and green. No one prepared us for that!
I'll have to disappoint you, but rice doesn't grow in Czech republic :D Those were probably barley fields :D
Haha right, so thats why its not as green then!

That's so cool that you can trace that far back. Hope you family private eyes can find more stuff with your info
Thanks Cindy! We hope so as well :)
wow what a beautiful country
Hi, I started watching you when you were in Bali because I will fly there in a few days. You're really cool so I started to subscribe your channel, I would never think that in a few weeks I'll see your videos from Czech Republic, where I live. That really cool. I greet you from China and wish you nice and safe travel.
Hey Matej - thats awesome mate, we're just swapping places a little then! Enjoy Bali, have an awesome time
Awesome video! I love the history and the excitement of not only a new place to visit but a personal connection!! ♡♡♡
Amazing comment - so glad you enjoyed :)
in frenštát pod radhošťem you were literally next to my house, where i lived, when i was young... :D mabye we can have some far rellatives :D
Really? Thats crazy!
Ty bydlíš ve Frenštátě? Já jo
Já také , no spíš bydlel jsem
That's awesome mate, chills for sure.
Such an epic experience
Your visit to your ancestors" place must be flowing with emotions. I would do the same, given the chance to visit my great great grandfather's place in Portugal. Beer flowing next episode. Godspeed and keep safe lovely couple.
Definitely an amazing time, thanks Lando! Lots of beer incoming haha. We're hoping to visit Portugal in a few moths, we'll go for ya :P
Oh great! Thank you so much Dane and Stacey. My ancestors' place is in Evora though we can't trace the exact spot.
That's awesome man, glad you're enjoying! You been to Prague or Berlin? We just arrived in Krakow and it's actually f'ing epic!
Thank you so much for all your comments across our vids :) We love your country ❤️
You should definitely visit České Budějovice. It's my beautiful hometown, and there are also many sights around.
This is an awesome video!
Thanks so much Azhar!
Great video, your ancestors home would have been class as Moravia/Silesia in the Holy Roman Empire back in the 1700s.
Look forward to the beer video!
Since found this out, thanks! Beer tour was amazing, video up in the next day or so 🍺
Great video, we are travelling to Frenstat pod Radhostem in June 2020 to trace my great great grandparents who migrated to Napier in 1875. My question is where did you get most of your information about your relatives from, as I seem to have hit a brick wall.
it's pretty cool to watch my hometown in someone's video😂
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching
Thanks mate! Loved this road trip, glad you were digging it as well
I am from Czech Rep. And i with my family live here for 8 centuries
Who knows, maybe our families were friends :)
Surname of my family was Osouchovi
I’m sure that was an emotional visit even though the house wasn’t there. That was a great video. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah it was really cool actually, long hours, but well worth it!
wow! what a cool find!
It was so epic! Hope you guys are doing well 🤘🏼
Love love love 💕
Beautiful country
I understand what you've felt in this video. That's exactly my reaction when we visited a place in the Northern Philippines where my great great grandfather used to live. :)
Definitely an amazing feeling isnt it? Thanks for watching and commenting
I can see the excitement ,,, really lucky you BROTHER ,,,,,, and I hope one day you will also take us where Stacy’s family lived at that time 😅.
It was awesome! We were acutally really close to Stacey's when we stopped over in Malaysia! Next time we'll definitely go.
Daneger and Stacey looking forward to it 🍀
Daneger and Stacey looking forward to it :)
Nice trip cool video, we currently just down the road in Příbor!
wow that is so awesome
Jsem rodilý obyvatel Frenštátu a je tady krásně
I don't know if you are still in CZ but if you are absolutly must try "Svičková". I think you already had, but pilsner urquell is one from the best beer in czech. Most people don't drink coca cola often, we have czech alternative "Kofola". And in shop you buy czech wafer my favorites is "Tatranky" or "Fidorka" they cost like half euro. Sorry for my english :) and Honest Prague Guide have amazing videos about czech. :D
Your english is great, no worries! Thanks for the suggestions!
Could you tell me where you got the map of Franhstadt at 4;02 in this video? My dad was also from there, and I went to visit in 2019. I'm working on a photo essay book and thought that would be a nice addition. Please and thanks. Kathy
Nice video 😁 Thanks for sharing your roots.
Thanks for watching a long Raul
You were almost in front of my house!😄 It lacks about 20 meters!😄
That's crazy!
I live in Canada & my family is originally from Ostrava, Czech Republic. Our house there still exists...
Класс .. Я служил в этом городе с 1889- 1990 весной нас вывели в Горький
Mabuhay from Philippines
I want to meet both of you here in Manila soon
Hey! If you want to try some local beer, I would recommend microbreweries, we have dozens of them
Here's a map: www.pividky.cz/mapa.php?lang=en
You can stop somewhere on your way to Prague (If you're heading back there)
I would definitely recommend brewerie Kácov (near the highway Prague - Brno) or some from the north (Kocour, Cvikov)
Watched this when I was in VN. Watching this again here in the PH.
Your double support means a lot - hope you're enjoying the PH :)
Haha thats cool man, you live in a cool area - thats where we stayed.
Lucky You! Im Polish...! ... hope Ur Country will support next time..!...
ha ha first! Been waiting for this one!
Congrats Rex - happy to give you your first trophy! 🏆
I'm from Frenštát pod Radhoštěm !!😄
That makes 2 of us :)
Thanks for this, been corrected!
My pleasure. Enjoy your stay in Czech Rep. :)
Thanks David!
A small historical fact...was not Austrian empire, but was Austro-Hungarian Empire......
Austro-Hungarian Empire was Established in 1867, before it was Austrian Empire
My family is from there as well and I'll be making this trip in a few months.
That's so cool! Hope you have a great trip :)
❤️Prague!! 👍
Hi there! it's crazy to see people travel to this small town where i practically grew up :) btw if you need more help on the spot, feel free to message me cause i still visit my parents regularly so i can contact or visit somebody in frenstat or translate something for you :) good luck and enjoy your travels!
We are from Texas and Sam's (the guy on our channel) family is from Frenstat! Last name Kubala! I bet you are in relation to him!
amazing
i couldn't figure it out your accents not really Australian not really British but i always thought nz sound like my neighbor's auzzy but it's distinctively different, i like your channel, haven't been in Poland for 29 years
We probably don't sound all that Kiwi at the moment because we travel so much, but theres definitely a big difference between Aus and NZ... at least both countries think so :)
