  • We visit Rila Monastery & Boyana Church, both Unesco World Heritage Sites, on a Traventuria tour from Sofia in Bulgaria...⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇
    Visiting 2 Unesco World Heritage Sites in one travel vlog didn't seem like it would be possible! (but it is) We'd heard so much about both Rila Monastery & Boyana Church and getting to them both from Sofia, but the public transport in Bulgaria was going to prove a little tricky.
    Luckily we found Traventuria Tours, who offer one tour in on the same day of travel. First stop is Boyana Church, only 30 minutes drive from Sofia center. Then off into the Rila Mountains to visit the Rila Monastery - which is possibly one of the most amazing UNESCO sites we've seen anywhere in the world. Check out Traventuria Bulgaria for all the tours they offer here: traventuria.com/
    As far as tours from Sofia are concerned, this tour to Rila Monastery & Boyana Church in the same day was an absolute winner and saved us hours of research. Monasterio de Rila will always hold a special place in our travel memories, hopefully that comes across in the vlog.

      I watched the entire series, you probably have the best tourist video review for my country I've seen so far. However, you should go back to Bulgaria immediately !!! :D You did not visit Veliko Tarnovo and Nesebar! Highly recommended!

      @@Roegbere1 OF course if you work in Sofia and you get paid the same amount in holland.
      But after time you will regret it, because our country is one of the most corrupted in the world.

      The problem is Bulgaria is not prepared for tourism on mass,in contrast of his neighbours Croatia and Greece. But as a bulgarian hiker and nature lover and carer,I think it hides a good side. When it's not overcrowded, then it's time for connoisseurs like you both ☺️.

    the frescoes are important because they are early forms of renaissance art, even predating Giotto. So you could say the Boyana church is the start of the renaissance.

    Another fantastic vlog - it's the fastest 13 minutes of the day which says a lot about the way your videos draw in the viewer. That's quite an achievement! I love Orthodox Christian art - the iconography that you captured so well here. It has a real mystique about it that transports the viewer to another level somehow. I can tell that you guys have loved Bulgaria - and I can totally see why. It looks amazing!

    • @DanegerAndStacey

      If the 13 minutes speeds by then we must be doing something right, thats great to hear! We worry sometimes about going too far past the 10 minute mark because people get bored!

    I was staying in Sofia for a month because of academic visit at Sofia university and I was able to see both of the places with the help of my Bulgarian speaking Russian roommate. I don't think I would have been able to manage it the public transportation way by myself. Funnily enough, we had harder time to get to Boyana than Rila. My visit was during March with some heavy snowfalls, so we got to see Rila in snow with not many tourists around which was nice. It's a magical place, must see. And it was just 3 of us at Boyana and we stayed inside for a long while. The guide was happy to meet foreigners who spoke Bulgarian...though she only realised at the end that I in fact, don't know Bulgarian XD (but I'm Slavic too, so I understood at least something ehm). Anyway yes, don't miss out on this when you are in Bulgaria folks!

      @DanegerAndStacey  5 років тому +1

      We're the same, Mark, definitely amazing enough that we could appreciate them without needing to be too deep into the religion side of what they mean. Haha, yeah, these donuts were so delicious and literally covered in sauce.

    I spent a weekend living in the Monastery as a kid, it was such a surreal experience waking up to all this beauty. I don’t know if they still offer accommodations, but it was a great place to lodge, distance yourself from all the noise, and explore the mountain.

    Great video. You definitely need to visit some other sights like Perperikon (it's little hard to get there because it was discover recently) or Kazanluk Trhacian tombs.
    For filming in churches usually is banned in Bulgaria because pointing cameras disturb prayers and flashes destroys paintings especially on the walls, even so usually if you sneak peek a phone with camera without pointing it and not using flashes no one will say anything.

      A month or two hiking in Rila Mountain equals years in some Indian ashram as a mystical and spiritual and also an aesthetic experience. It is not a coincidence that the most sacred place in Bulgaria - The Rila Monastery - is there. But nowadays there are too many tourists there.

      Its the diet of coffee, beer and pizza that helps form your body into a gimbal over time!
