Frank Smethurst and Mustache Rob Hit Up the Savannah River in Augusta, Georgia | S1E05 | Das Boat

- Returning to a favorite fishing spot from your past can be a questionable choice. What if it’s not as good as you remember? What if everybody and their sister started fishing your spots? What if you’re not as good as you remember? In this episode of Das Boat, Frank Smethurst and his old friend Mustache Rob circle back to some of their old favorite stomping grounds on the Savannah River in Augusta, Georgia. They catch some of the many native sport fish in this archetypical southern river, and set their sights on the east coast’s most sought after migratory game fish-stripers. Along the way, Das Boat gets a major upgrade, and they discuss the Georgia-South Carolina rivalry, southern roots, Bartram’s Bass, and the intertwined history of Augusta and the Savannah River.

Honestly this episode hit on a more emotional level than any of the previous ones. Fishing with old friends in old places to make young memories is why hunting and fishing has spanned the ages and crosses all borders and cultural lines. Great content and I genuinely thank you for sharing this particular experience.
It has for food more than people with friends in old places
How do you turn a $500 boat into a $2500 boat? Put 6 or 7 thousand dollars into it. That is turning into a pretty sweet boat though.
Gotta a feeling they are well over 10k now. The trolling motor alone is over 2500.00 and they don't even use it to spotlock.
Next episode is getting jets. They got a gas powered outboard, electric trolling motor, poling platform & pole, and oars. In 2 episodes it becomes a hovercraft.
TheLZempir3 this is not even its final form!
B.O.A.T. Break Out Another Thousand!!!!!! But I wouldn't be without one!!!
That was just for the motor. A new 40 hp honda 4 stroke outboard motor is over 7k... without the propeller.
You can't tell me that guy is not Callaghan in 30 years.
hahah absolutely!!! my first thought too!
I swear
Clearly it's his father
I thought it was his dad at first!
Callaghan's mustache will be much more glorious in 30 years lol.
Great episode. The pronunciation of Augusta was killing me though.
Uh-gusta, it killed me too.
William O'Connell, I thought the pronunciation was funny also having been born in Metter, 90 miles south.

Glad I was not the only one lol
Uncle Steve ain’t from round here.... he don’t know how to talk Georgia lol
Such a great series! You need to do a season 2, with a new boat, up in the midwest or around the northwest!
Trent 66 agreed! Fish for some walleye, perch, pike, and show some recipes, enough of the catch and release bass...
Both these comments aged well. Got exactly what you both asked for
I grew up on the Mississippi river in central Minnesota fly fishing for everything that swims in it and I still do to this day! This episode really spoke to my soul! Those who know a river. know it feeds the heart! Can't thank you enough!
One of the best fishing shows on youtube hope it has many more seasons.
Drag Das Boat onto the hard water for some ice fishing action! Gonna need something to watch come winter time... Great work as always MeatEater Fishing Dept.!
I love the conservation tilt of this series. It helps explain the heart of modern American hunting and fishing culture in terms that are easy for any person to understand. We don't just take from our environment, we appreciate, love, enjoy, and give back to our environment.
This whole series has been fantastic. Watched the first episode with my 5 year old son a few weeks ago, and he’s been talking about fishing nonstop ever since. We’re getting him a rod this weekend, and then off we go!
Would love to see this series continue, either with different boats or with trucks, vans, ATVs, duck blinds, or other sport specific things.
Can't say enough about how I love watching this show. From the narration, to the scenery, and the exposing of what each place has been through whether it be water quality issues or just the plain history of the area this is well done. Keep it going I can't imagine it stopping!
This is awesome. Rob sold me my last two spin rods; dude is so knowledgeable and pleasant to speak with.
Wow!!!
Frank Smethhurst!!!!
Loved this show and this part/episode has SURELY been a favorite for many of us!
I never leave comments on you tube, but I think this series warrants one. This is such a great series. It shows that you don’t have to have the best of the best boat and equipment to hit the lakes and rivers of America. This boat has been to the shallow Florida flats in saltwater and to freshwater lakes of the south. It makes fishing all across America seem accessible to everyone. Just an old boat with some modern upgrades and some know how and you can have a great all around fishing rig. This series, in my opinion, embodies the American spirit. Terrific. Keep up the awesome content!
This series has renewed an interest in fishing that had long gone dormant in me. I too would love to see it continue with another old boat in another great part of this country. Given the variety of water and landscapes you could continue it for another few seasons for sure and showcase the other great fisheries we have. Throw in information on the ecological challenges each face and you could easily inspire more of us to do more to protect them. Fantastic show and thanks for working to bring us this old boats new stories.
Never in a million years did I expect you guys to come to my home town. I fish in the Savannah all the time such a beautiful place.
I cant catch a cold out of any river around here they come here for a day and rack up smh!!
@@mikelmyers9121 that's weird man I do great in the savannah🤷♂️
@@noahd4039 I live down here in Savannah, I caught a gar by mistake out of the savannah river, I fish the ogecheee alot for reds, trout, whiting or anything else that bites, I mostly catch stingrays tho😂
I was stationed out at Gordon for a while and like a clod I never fished the river.
Yeah same. I was super surprised when they said they were in awgusta
Great series...Rob and Frank are terrific.
Thx for all the history lessons on these smaller towns, people and cultures of the area. Thx to the sponsors for dishing out the cash for making this happen, thx to the Meat man and his team for producing the content.
Nice to see Callahan’s dad make an appearance.
Living in N Ga near the” Dead Sea” other wise known as lake Alatoona it would be cool to see who Das Boat would be sailing to the coves and deep water of the Damn...
Or put Das Boat in the Hooch to go after river strippers and some brown trout...
Thanks Steve and all the other members at meateater for this great series.
Coming from an avid fisherman, hunter, and lover of all things outdoors...(plus I'm a huge computer and sci-fi geek) Das Boat is the Millennium Falcon of 21st century! To quote Harrison Ford as Han Solo; "She'll make point five past lightspeed. She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid. I've made a lot of special modifications myself."
I love this series. The perspective & contribution of each guide/author/fisher make for an interesting, though provoking, & enjoyable series. And as an owner of a 16’/25 hp tiller I can relate to the pluses & minuses of the craft. Thank you, & tight lines.
Thanks Steven! Great Show!
I loved fishing the Savanah while my family was stationed in Beaufort, SC so much wild. so much awesome. brings back a lot of memories watching this boat journey through those waters. thanks guys.
Another great episode. I was especially happy to see a fly fisherman who wasn't "above" picking up traditional tackle and using bait to catch a fish👍
P.S. are you guys doing a gove away with the boat at the end of the series. I'm sure some angler out there would be extremely excited to receive that boat
This series is absolutely fucking amazing, please keep them coming Steve, don't let this be a one-off!
I know this series will end sooner or later, but I really hope it wouldn’t. this is such an awesome show with such awesome people.
y’all need to keep this going.
edit: & you can NEVER go wrong with a wacky rig. I was in Savannah when Irma hit, but I was down there for work. I wish I could’ve gotten to see/spend some time on this river. it looks like an awesome fishery.
i grew up in Augusta and i have to say the river front was one of the biggest part of my memories down there. i miss it, its such a quiet and close nit town.
Steve narrating anything can make it legit. Great show. Keep it up
Please continue this. I look very forward to these episodes on my way home from work. Knowing that Das boat Is gonna but a smile.
I'm from the Aiken/Augusta area and it was awesome seeing you guys fish the Savannah!!! It was really cool to see you guys come to Aiken, SC. lol
Haha yeah they put in on the north augusta boat landing haha
Probably a good thing the boat ramp wasn't full that day. Might have had some not so happy guys waiting on him to learn how to load a boat😂.
Great and I can't wait for the next Episode! Thanks Frank and Rob you did honor to my future boat! lol
This would make for a great TV show.
Love this series...........thank u Steve .............and thank u Joe Rogan podcast for hooking me up with u..........stay safe __ PEACE
This needs to happen every year!
Key Words!
Bringing back memories, of the days when we didn't have top dollar boats and we got help from Genuine People.
Christ bless All you Boyz!
Please keep this series going, it's really great
My absolute favorite series on youtube. keep this one up.
Gotta love that ol' timers shit! From my learnings from the N.W. crabber/salmon/steelhead community to the S.E. bass, striper, scrimpin', etc., community. The water....connects us all fisherman nationwide!
Good stuff as always! How about a 'Das Truck' series with big game out West?
Meat eater and Roadkill crossover would be the best thing to exist on a screen
Ooooooh shit, "Georgians back shit that's not wrong. "
Such an appropriate statement. Lol. Loving this series! So base form factual coupled with hard work and grit, multiplied by experience. I'm definitely a life long fan! Keep it up!
Awesome! Love the way y'all portrayed my home! Come on back now! Even MORE fishing upriver and in Lake Thurmond/Clark's Hill Reservoir!
Great show, I especially love the Savannah river episode. Can't wait for next week and the lower part. Rob and Frank are great!
This is super cool. I grew up in Augusta and fished that river all the time and now I live in Atlanta for school and I get all my fly tying material from The Fish Hawk where Rob's at.
🤩💖Super👌👌👌❁ I live in Augusta! I fish the river every chance I get. Good smallmouth and striper...❤
Dang it! I binge watched the all 5 now I need more! MORE MORE MORE!!! This is the best fishing show EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We need 100+ more episodes of this and you should be in the boat everytime rinella
Lovely people, beautiful scenery and fish. Great episode!
Lovin’ these episodes. They have got me excited to get fishing again.
Great series. I don't hunt but love your hunting videos so when I saw this I was pumped.
Frank is such an awesome guy I got to go fishing with him once in Colorado it was a great day and I learned a lot! Thanks frank!
On a different note, love the series! Do it again
Excellent and entertaining episode! I would like to see these two guys have a regular show fishing all over the country!!
I just love these series! Netflix or Travel Channel need to pick this up!!
"The history of this town is much richer, and frankly, more interesting than dudes whacking around little balls on manicured lawns in order to win green business coats."
I spit up my lunch. Gotta love Steve.
😂😂😂💀
honestly the best episode yet. their dynamic had me laughing and smiling constantly
Great episode and great series. Keep up the good work and hurry up with episode 6. Can’t wait to see how they do. I interned at Wade to help with the quail research. Such a great place.
Another great episode. Thanks for doing this series I've really enjoyed it.
This is possibly the best series I've seen on this platform. I need more.
The way you explain the details is outstanding. Congratulations
Dang nabbit, I wish every episode was an hour long! Keep em coming!
LOVE this show.
I just hope you continue to make new episodes of das boat. I really enjoyed watching them 👍👍👍👍
I sure hope y’all do more than 1 season of this. It’s awesome!!
Great show. Keep em coming. More More More!!
Great timing. Just bought a "DAS TIN TUB" of my own and need some ideas for upgrades! Loving the series.
This always makes me excited for thursday
I’ll offer up my shop next year and I live on a river that feeds Lake Erie about 5 miles away and I know a lot of charter captains to hammer some Perch or Walleye, depending on the time of year! Shitloads of cheap boats and more shops with anything you would ever need and loads of BEER! BTW I have one of those steering cables hanging on the wall of my barn!
And another great episode! As if I expected anything less. Thursdays rock.
Loving it guys. Can't wait for the next episode
Great episode! Nice to see the boat with a working console. Pretty area out there.
I love what you guys are doing! You should consider going home to Michigan with Das boat and bring back some memories
This series is GOLD!
Love this serie. Keep it up!
Love this show.
Rinella is the best American 'nature' doc narrator. We need Mas Boat!!!!
from SC, thanks for putting the Gamecock on!!! That's awesome!
Great series. Just got put on to it, and enjoying it.
Our favorite series of 2019! #DasBoat is DOPE
The Red Lobster commercial voiced over by a very tender gentleman in the middle of the episode was gold.
"Rob's Gone Nuclear".
Drag that damn thing north to PA. Show me some good ol' Susquehanna river muskies and walleye
Where you at in PA? I'm from Danville, I cut my teeth on that river...
I'm a born and raised Georgian and this is awesome to see content from my own state.
Next season.....Come to Colorado!! I'll put y'all on some huge lakers!! And maybe a few blue grouse for the fun of it!! Great show guys!!
Awesome show Steve!!!!
Love it all. More seasons and longer episodes!!! Heck make it a tv series like meateater so we can binge watch on Netflix. Lol
This boat is almost a retelling of the duck boat I bought in the late 90's and still own; buy a 10 year old used boat in decent enough (see questionable) shape, then spend WAY too much money making it awesomely unique!
You got the funniest way of saying Augusta! I am from Georgia and most, most, of us just say (U-gust-uh)!!! But you keep on doing you brother! LOL
The guys in the earlier episodes are probably pissed watching how the boat progressed each episode, compared to the jalopy they used early on. Nah, probably not.. they're getting paid to fish... lol Keep these coming!
Gonna need this to continue through the harsh highline winter to scratch that fishing itch!
Call me paranoid but I never trim the motor all the way down until I'm in the water...8:10 made me cringe haha
Me too!
Amazing series MeatEater crew.
This episode is the best one yet
Yes! More Das Boat!!!
That's getting to be a sweet boat! Next upgrade for me would be a prop guard and some electronics.
This show needs to be longer!
That guy that sold the boat was a character himself!
21 minute video that took me an hour to watch because as an Augusta native I had to pause and rewind every time he saide UH-GUSTA
Keep filming until boat sinks! I love these vids. Favorite of this one is the loading boat at the end lol 😆
