Gluten ataxia is frequently misdiagnosed. I had confirmed cognitive impairment and over a year of GI issues. I had idiopathic sporadic gluten ataxia that I was repeatedly told was psychological until, due to being diagnosed with Eosinophilic Esophagitis, I went on the SPED diet (no celiac-related blood tests given before hand) much of my ataxia and cognitive impairment improved, though not 100%. Peripheral neuropathy remains a problem as well. Also, because I had noticed grain carbs made me tired, I had greatly reduced, but not fully eliminated grain from my diet, so I would likely have had to increase my consumption to accurately test for celiac. Now I would have to risk the ataxia, neuropathy and memory issues to worsen due to going from several months gluten-free to consuming enough to appropriately test for celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. I have the three snps/alleles for the HLA-DQ2.2 celiac type. My issues were severe enough I believed I had frontotemporal dementia.

There are other sources of fiber. Whole wheat is not the only one. Legumes don't have gluten and even more fiber. Legumes are really cheap.

So is gluten absolutely harmless in every way for someone who doesn't have celiac disease? And in those who do have celiac disease, can it cause white matter brain lesions?
