Superb passing, superb kicking, superb try scoring ability, superb ability to see the space, plus he's got great versatility and for a scrum half he's huge, easily the best and most complete 9 in the world imo
alien watch aaron smith is shit compared to Murray. Murray can control a game unlike Smith that may not suit new Zealands play style but as they can be associated with all or nothing Rugby (risky but skillful from anywhere on the pitch) if new Zealand was brought up the way Europeans are Murray would be the biggest asset to have. He has a range of kicks (better then smith) he controls a game better than Smith and he's just overall the better player. As for Barrett hands down better player then sexton nobody should argue that but overall ireland have better combination at half backs all black best individual at 10
Message to anyone in the comments. It's personal opinion if Aaron Smith or Connor Murray is better. They are both class and anyone who is trying to convince anyone that either or is somehow better just give up. Plus they play a totally different game. Connor like to run with the ball and use box kicks to gain territory and Aaron Smith utilises that no have a quick back line by just whipping the ball out. So it's difficult to compare tbh
Daniel Turkington Aaron is the best number 9 in the world from an All Blacks perspective because he does exactly what the All Blacks need him to do - deliver sharp, accurate, lightening ball without giving the defence time to reset. The All Blacks play an expansive game and at pace, so having a 9 than can successfully link the forwards and backs with efficiency is all the All Blacks really require. I think there in lies the difference between the North and the South. Murray is a brilliant individual player (much in the same way Byron Kellegher was it TJ Perenara is) But if it were the All Blacks, they would still select Arron Smith over Murray I think.
Daniel Turkington for Ireland’s play style Murray is the best 9 that they can get For the all blacks it’s the same. If they both played for the all blacks murray would be 2nd choice probs, but if they both played For Ireland Smith would be 2nd choice. They both have different aspects of their game that are better, like Murray’s box kicking and smith’s quick balls. Personally judging who the best scrum half in the world is very hard because there are so many different ways to be an effective scrum half.
Conor is good there's no denying, but Peter Stringer was the best Irish no.9 without any doubt in my opinion, I used to call him "the ferret" because he went in one end of a scrum or ruck and nearly always came out the other side with the ball and even though he was tiny he had no fear of tackling anyone he even brought down Jonah Lomu.!!
Murray an amazing player but comparing him with smith is just pointless as the two styles and very distinct skill sets are so different. One thing that is obvious though is that ireland wouldnt be half the team they are without murray and sexton and if both stay fit then ireland are a huge chance to go beyond the quarters in japan next year and anything is possible after that. The november test will be interesting!!
the best number 9 in the world - George Gregan n Justin Marshall- only this two guys in the rugby history never ever change no irish sory mayber next centry
Lol, turns out Murray was'nt quite as good as Irish pundits made him out to be. While Murray was on the rise Aaron Smith, unfortunately was going through a rough patch of inconsistent form, from 2016 - 2019 but he has come back snarling. His allround game, creativity, acceleration, passing, and kicking game have made him wholly unoredictable. Murray, became a kicking halfback.
Hmmmm, guy's he's good, but it depends on what kind of game plan you want. He's easily the best "big" Halfback playing in the world at the moment. That much is clear, he's also tactically very useful as he's strong, tackles and covers well, runs straight, kicks well and can slot into a Fly Half or Full Back position if need be. He works well for Ireland's game plan where he's another Loose Forward. Indeed, he's not quite a Joost van der Westhuizen, level big Halfback, that bloke is probably the greatest of all time. Nevertheless, he's a more polished and consistent version of Mike Philips, who, once upon a time. Was the best 6ft plus Halfback in the world. Thus, in terms of wider use Murray is more versatile than his two main rivals Smith and Perenara. However, if you want to play quick ball, have great speed around the rucks, make fast switches of play, create offloads, use side steps/agility and great aerobic fitness, at Half Back you'd settle for these guy's. It's all a matter of preference. I'm a Kiwi so I'll go with my guy's, but as said I'm not going to argue against Murray being the best of the larger Halfbacks in world Rugby.
Lol Aaron Smith, Faf De Klerk and Will Genia must not exist in your mind, he the best in the same way Mark Webber was the best F1 driver during his time, he was the best if you pretended Alonso, Button and Hamilton didn’t exist
Put it like dis Aaron smith is slightly better at a nines job as passing n dat but dats all he's got over Murray. Murray is a way more all round player
Murrays style suits slow-ball in games where pace isn't a requirement to get beyond the tackle line, just big ball running forwards in inside/midfield channels. He relies on tired forwards making poor defensive decisions to make him shine - thats Halfback 101 stuff....nothing extraordinary about that. He's being allowed more time on the ball more as Schmidt has Irelands forwards collectively playing better giving him more front-foot ball but make no mistake he'd struggle wearing black where width & 'pace' of game and quickness of 9 to get to all rucks and make decisions from those rucks is critical. There's a good reason why the AB's are No1 for the last 12 yrs consistently and its the quality of our 9's. Murray wouldn't start in any NZ Super teams let alone this outrageous claim "best on planet".
Jo Stafford ridiculous. He would easily start ahead of Pulu, Hall, and Weber. Just because murray doesn't play at pace all the time doesn't mean he's not capable of it
Jo Stafford and in fairness the only Irish province Aaron smith or TJ would start for is Connacht, and possibly Leinster due to their lack of good 9's. They wouldn't start ahead of murray or a couple others over here. Different styles
Whats good about being the best individual in a team sport? He'll most likely never win a world cup with Ireland. Messi said it best when he said "i would rather be a World Champion then the best in the world"
Moses Tangilanu every Irishman takes pride in his Irish rugby shirt. You got us Irish wrong. Not too mention we do have a chance in winning the rugby World Cup. Actually a very good chance
Aidan Neal Ireland is twice the team now that beat the all blacks in Chicago. And I'm not just saying that. The truly are. The young talent coming through is unbelievable. Stockade a example. His 21. First six nations. Scored 7 tries this year. First man in history of six nations to do it. Not to mention Ireland won the grand slam last week 12 unbeaten runs. All blacks without doubt as always are the team to beat. But Ireland is on their tailcoats
Murray the best 9 on planet. ALL this from Ireland beating NZ for the first time. Overreaching much? Fact of the matter is Murray wouldn't start in 4 of 5 NZ Super teams, possibly all of them let alone best on planet. His style of 9 doesn't suit the pace of our game in NZ nor the responsibility our 9's have in varying the pace and attack. Thats the fundamental difference between the NZ game and Northern styles - When facing NZ your teams lack the individual skills so have to focus on being exceptional at one style crafting a certain individual skill-set/size and 'idealog' - too one dimensional (England possible exception) .......and which style of rugby consistently wins the most tests? The style that can be effective playing "whats in front of them" and who is the conductor of that symphony? Invariably whoever is wearing No9 on the back of a black jersey.
And the fact you claim England is the least one dimensional team in the NH shows exactly how much you know. Scotland are the least one dimensional, followed by wales then Ireland then England. You really shouldn't talk about stuff you so obviously don't know about
Because he didn't and clearly you know little about rugby. You're comparing apples and banana's judging the merits of a 9 (Murray) who doesn't play week in week out in a competition or international side where 'pace of game' is critical to success. In fact looking at the possession stats for Ireland's Australia tests - considering how long Ireland owned the ball in the last 2 tests v points scored one can only surmise just how non-effective Ireland were in possession and that is a direct reflection on Irelands tactics and Murrays 'general' decision making. Quite honestly, NZ has the top 3 halfbacks in the world right now and the two best 10's and after NZ I'd be looking at SA for the remaining top 5. Like I say Rhys Webb suits our style of play here in NZ and could push for a start in a Super Team but Murray just simply be unemployed down here looking at how slow he is getting to rucks - how slow his pass is and how slow his general decision making is.
Jo Stafford I will concede that the aus series was a bit of a let down in terms of Ireland's attack. But look at the 6n's - 20 tries scored in 4 matches, 7 more than any other team and that was without scoring any v France on the first week. I get your whole point about the pace of the game. Yes murray is not suited for super rugby, but no Weber pulu or hall would not keep their places ahead of him. Simple as that, they're not anywhere near good enough. Smith and TJ are very good 9's and definitely top tier with murray, the others are just not near that level. And I will say it again, just because murray doesn't always play a fast paced style doesn't mean he cant. Also there's a good video by squidge rugby that shows what a quick thinker murray is, not that you seem interested. He also is the best defensive 9 since Joost, have you ever seen any other halfback put The Bus out back over his own dead ball line? Or even any back for that matter? Granted not every game he has is amazing, but to claim he's not in the top 3 is just stupidity and in my opinion and many others he's been number 1 for a couple years now
Brid Kerrigan Aaron Smith will be the greatest 9 ever when he retires. His performances during the World Cup was better than any 9 in the past 10 years. You can consider Murray lucky Smiths in a form slump at the moment.
Maybe, maybe not, both are the same age and hopefully have many years left. But what is of interest to me more as an ireland fan is who is the worlds current best 9, and that is connor murray
MIKE LONG ..Aron Smith was the best in the world for the past years but Murray has outclassed him for the past few matches they went head to head..First with the Ireland vs All blacks and then Murray outclassed Smith again with The British and Irish Lions tour..and for T.J..i dont think he is better than Murray..so lets just say...at the moment Murray is number 1..i know you can agree on this...keep in mind that he was doing it against the number 1 rugby team in the world filled with superstars.
Only One actually cannot agree on this, i believe aron smith is good but perenara is becoming much better than both. Hes fast, smart and also steals balls which Murray cant do. Trust Murray has nothing against perenara especially because super rugby is a faster game than england and frances etc
MIKE LONG ..Hey...then i guess you should watch the whole game which they went head to head bro...Ireland vs All blacks ..and Lions vs All blacks...My point is Aron Smith is the best in the world and if anyone can outplayed him deserves the number 1 spot..and Murray just did that

Ireland has the best 9 and 10 in the world hands down
Richie Ivers,Thats why Beauden Barrett won back to back player of the year awards.
They have the best 9 and 10 connection but individually beauden barret is better than Johnny sexton
