- This is a quick video to document how I change the oil on our 2018 Mazda CX-5 that has a Fumoto valve installed instead of a drain plug. It makes oil changes quicker and cleaner.
I have provided a link to the valves below.

I just bought a CX-5. It's such a relief to find that there are just two bolts and a couple of those awful fasteners to get to the drain plug and filter. My old car had about a quadrillion of them around what seemed like the entire periphery of the undercarriage. Thanks for the video.
Pro tip for removing oil filters, especially when they're in this type of vertical orientation: Take an empty two-liter soda bottle or a similar round, relatively narrow bottle, replace the cap, and cut off the bottom. Loosen the oil filter enough to begin removing it by hand, but not enough for oil to start leaking. Then slide the bottomless bottle over the oil filter and loosen it. All the oil will go into the bottle, rather than down your arm. Be careful to secure the oil filter and bottle when the filter breaks free of the threads!
Red Solo Cup works most of the time too
I installed a fumoto valve on my Subaru Outback and I can't live without it. I think you should have bought an adapter with your fumoto valve so the oil won't touch the spring coil when you are draining the oil. Thank you for this informative video.
You are right. I could order the adapter the next time I get one. I need to install them on my other cars. I'm slacking.
After years of doing oil and filter changes, I finally figured out to wrap the filter with a good plastic bag as I unscrew it, and everything, including my hands are spared the oil splatters.
Use a red or clear plastic cup for removing the filter. I usually remove the filter first. Well done 👍🏿
Question if I’m using individual
Quarts on the 5th quarts how much oil should I leave in the quart? To be at 4.8
We too were a mk4 GTI & CX-5 garage for 4 yrs before the 15yo GTI was replaced with a wrx. Did you prefill the new filter with new oil to minimize a "dry" start. I always add new oil to the new filter to make sure it is at least half full before spinning it on. Did/have you modified the threads of the valve to allow more oil to drain (i.e. Not as many threads sticking up in the pan) ?
I had never thought about thread depth not allowing oil to drain completely. I had heard about filling the filter before installation. But, I don't typically do either. Perhaps I should consider them. I will be installing a Fumoto valve on the Golf. I will check the thickness of the pan.
I too used to have some Subies.
I should have kept my 02 WRX or the 04 STI. But, life moves on.
Some cars have a flood mode where it will just crank but not turn over. I have heard about the threads sticking up a little in the pan, I believe it’s different for every car, I’d think it should be fine there is always some oil left over inside the engine id say just just use your valve and change it often
What size/exact number is it for Fumoto valve? I have CX5 2021. Nice vid!
Thanks! I got the F-106. But there are other options. See the link below.

will that valve fit on a 2022 cx5?
I think so. But for some reason it doesn't allow you to select 2022 for the CX-5. But check out the website.

Hi! It is the F-106 Fumoto valve. There are other option with nipples as well. You can get it on ebay ( ebay.us/M9DWSP ) and Amazon ( amzn.to/3Lmt7ZR ).
