  • September 13th, 2022 - Who Counts As "OG" In The FGC? (FGC Lore And History)
Recently, a pretty casual conversation came up in the FGC on: when can you call yourself an OG in the FGC? Well, James thought this was interesting, and uses it as an opportunity to talk about FGC History and how different things were back in the day. Take a trip down memory lane and enjoy!

I've been playing since 1987. I'm beyond OG status.
If you played in the 90's no matter if people know who you were you're still an OG, You helped SF gain traction.

Keep up the nostalgia content James, love it. Where I grew up really didn't have many arcades but I remember dumping infinite hours into console versions of ST, Alpha 2, KI, and Alpha 3 in the mid 90s and later coming back into fighting games to discover fgc scenes in college w/ MvC2 and Soul Calibur 2. Great memories

Originally, OG was Original Gangsta. Its used differently nowadays. From my understanding, OG is a rolemodel, leader and/ mentor figure of the community. I've heard this used in a few different settings. I'll give you the context to them and yall can decide how you want to use OG.
In modern hip hop, its been used as a title people give to their mentors. New age artist meets up with an OG (established artist) and gets advice from them on how to find success in their field. This has been used with older school rappers but even new age artists like Jcole. Young artists on his label have called him an OG. But I've also heard people call their mother an OG. For teaching them how to navigate and conduct themselves without a father to do so. I started using it this way, growing up in a similar circumstance.
So, if you're going by my criteria, a lot of the "newer" generation counts as OGs. They are mentoring the youngins (new people) into a new era.

I went from bein' a Ken main in SF2, to a Dan main once he hit. Managed to win a round in prelims at a tourney w/ his super taunt once. I've never been the best player, but I've always been the drunkest. Can't wait to main Jamie in 6. If you got beaten by Dan in the Trocadero (rip), that was me. If you played Akuma back then you *remember* me fs.

I have been playing since the mid 90s in Mumbai and I agree with the issue of losing quarters because I used to lose a lot in SSF against dictators and fireball play. We had a good presence of the new challenger, MK 1/2/3U. I could not figure the 6 button layouts and at the same time SNK came with 4 buttons and i could play with 3 characters i was able to reach Rugal in 94 and that's when i left SF and moved for a long time. I did play the Alpha series and couldn't get the feel for it but they just disappeared anyways.
Wish i could visit all these arcades Chen just mentioned, must have been fun. I experienced the non competitive local scene and it was amazing.

I agree with Chen. Hyper fighting was the zenith of the SF 2 mania of the early 90s. As a 35 year old from NYC, I can attest to this. Super 2 arcades were only seen in arcade spots, but not in casual places like department stores or laundry spots. Champion Edition and HF arcades were EVERYWHERE in NY. Even outside on the sidewalks. And yes, Alpha 2 AND Xmen vs Street fighter were the games that brought SF back into the mainstream again. 1996 was the comeback year for SF, and it was because of those 2 games. A large factor was the accessibility of playing them. Alpha 2 and XvSF were the first 2 fighters Capcom made an easy transition into home consoles after SF2. Not perfect ports into the Saturn and PS1, which the Saturn port was superior, but the interest was back again.

If you returned four pop bottles to get a buck to play Street Fighter you're an OG.
That buck had to last as long as possible. The good old days when your Mom came to the Arcade with that belt.

Sounds like James is saying he's the other kind of OG..... Original Groupie :D
Somewhat seriously though, I think James can consider himself a different kind of OG. One of the Old Guard. Anyone who has been around for 20 years or more is definitely part of the Old Guard. 5 years or more for Veterans.
And then you can go with a relative term like "old school". Anyone who only played games before the person talking started :p

Listening to this what I've gathered is if you weren't winning or cool with certain players you aren't considered an og in James statements. I figured being an og/ veteran was playing these older titles since their arrival in arcades. Being good helps, but if you didn't win in tourney you don't matter?

    • @UltraChenTV

Nah, when I say I wasn’t significant back then, I was literally nobody. I can only name the players that did well these days because, well, they stood out and ai knew their name. I wish I could name a lot more people. It wasn’t just about winning, but competing hardcore is important. Back then EVERYONE played SFII. Like… EVERYONE. Counting everyone who just played even casually means EVERYONE IS OG.

    • @TMNTfever
      @TMNTfever Рік тому

@@UltraChenTV Thanks for responding. I think that SF OGs and Tekken OGs are definitely different generations. SF OGs, according to you, started competing in early-to-mid 90s. I think a Tekken OG could be considered starting around 1999-2004. Since Tekken was never a headline B3 game, and T5 came in 2005. Although some people would consider T5 players OG, I wouldn't lol.

James is right. You can't become an OG, you just become whatever generation you came in at much like how Millennials cannot become baby boomers. They were not alive during the baby boomer generation. (Which makes the expression boomer used on all people older than you kind of silly). They're just Millennials. If you're an 09'er, then you will forever be an 09'er. You're not going to all of the sudden turn into an OG.
Also, shout outs to James Chen's approval of A3. His A3 Gamefaqs guide is no joke!

Does it amount to clout or currency? No but they know what's up when I climb in that ring with them. Not just fg but fps moba racing. Still in top 100 of cod4, bo1, bo2, mw2.

@ 9:00 i don't know. With my friends Karate Champ was pretty popular. :3 @ 12:02 Owow see i wondered about that because around here the Street Fighter Hysteria was just getting *started* a couple of months before the release of Super Street Fighter 2. We're kinda' slow when it comes to *anything* that's in fashion. :3 @ 21:35 i wouldn't use Veteran. That's like, the last word to come to mind when viewing the FGC. It has too many other connotations. Then again i don't use O.G. either. It just sounds silly and as you say, it's pointless and involves too few people to be actually relevant. @ 36:06 o.o Yes. Yes, Diago was. If *anybody* was, it was Diago! Although thanks to my love of G.I.JOE and a video made by CAPCOM USA,, Tomo Ohira was my first actual Street Fighter hero. :3 @ 38:52 Was that a Clerks reference? xD @ 56:17 i can't be O.G.!
