As a total newbie, I found this to be one of the most helpful tutorials I’ve come across. You are a born teacher as well as a really clever designer and seamstress. Thank you.
YOU MADE ME SMILE SOOOOOO BIG AT THE END!!! THE TALKING MITTEN WAS SO ADORABLE!!! MADE ME FEEL LIKE A CHILD AGAIN!!! "HEY WAKE UP!" ALSO...LOVED THIS TUTORIAL!!!
Just found this years after posted but thanks for the video. I like that the thumb is in front not just cut out the side like some. Just a tip in case anyone finds this later too is to hand stitch one little stitch in the thumbs and at the top through all layers at the seam so when you pull your hand out the thumb lining doesn't pull out. So annoying to try to get that thumb back in when you are putting them on.
Hi Sue I was watching your other video of 'Pinch Me' unboxing & rembering you said that you had your surgery on your hand & now your moving your hand so Gracefully!!
Yes, Laura, I am thankful I can do as much as I can with my right hand now. The ring finger is still limited in motion, I can't bend it all the way into a fist, so my grip is weaker, but considering they used to not even try to repair severed tendons between the bottom knuckle and the palm (they call it "no man's land") because it was unsuccessful, I am glad technology has advanced and they can get most of the movement and stability back now.
Awesome tutorial. Can't wait to try this. And thank you for making feel better about bobbin mishaps. I have had this happen and figured it was just because I'm a total novice. Nice to know it happens to experienced people too - and now I know something to check the next time it happens, because I know there WILL be a next time.
I am so going to make these! I want to make a few pair to keep in a basket by my front door. Sometimes we have visitors who forget their gloves. What a great thing to offer them a pair. Also, after printing patterns I always trace my pattern onto white interfacing with all the markings. It clings to the fabric really well. And if I use it more than once it holds through unlimited use. Thank you so much for making this video!
When your machine chunks like that it because it is full of fuzzy stuff from the mittens. Remove bobbin and throat plate remove all fuzz with a small brush. I use a craft paint brush. It's also helpful to oil machine often when using fleece and wools.😅
Going to watch this tomorrow when Anthony goes home - I have a pile of old sweaters - I've been turning mine into dog beds but I like your idea also !!
BanDana Gramma your welcome I just subscribed and looking forward to more fun videos from you. I was going to take a class at my local sewing store for upcycled sweater mittens but now I am glad I seen it done here Thanks again enjoy your day!💐
Those mittens are so cute and they look very warm cozy. Sure could use a pair with these cold days were having. Enjoyed the hand performance at the end. :-) By the way I never have used a sewing machine I have sewed everything by hand all of my sons costumes for his performances.
Hi bandana grandma, just watching your wonderful mitten tutorial, thank you for taking the time to show it, I'm assuming life got to busy to post the pattern , I'm going to check my fabric store for 1, but having the video with it will be a great help, God bless you, enjoy your videos
I absolutely loved this video, my sister sent me the link. I am not a sewer but want to learn, i have 6 adult children and several grandchildren and would love to make them these. I believe that i could learn how, if i could learn the sewing machine, which my hubby does know how to work. I so look forward to checking out more of your videos. God Bless have a wonderful day.
Thank you Shelly! I'm so happy to have you as part of my channel. I plan to GO LIVE today at 11 EST to do a cooking video and share some mail I received. YES! You can learn to sew! Go for it!
have you made a pattern yet for this mitten? I love your tutorial. Love how you show when you mess up and explain the reason for it.. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Pam! No, sorry. I was playing around with a written pattern at the end of mitten season last Spring, and never completed getting it share-ready. Don't give up on me. I just brought out all my mitten making bins today and should be at it again soon. Thank you for your kind words.
Bsst sewing video I’ve ever seen. Thanks for keeping the bloopers in, it’s been a real education. These are the secrets my grandmas and great grandmas NEVER told me. I’m fuming I never had UA-cam 25 years ago when I started sewing…..
Oh thank you Melinda! What a sweet, encouraging comment! I truly, truly appreciate your kind words letting me know I helped and entertained in some way. God bless you -- with love from BanDana Gramma.
Love this tutorial! Just found your channel and subscribed! I am looking for YOUR mitten pattern. Can't seem to find it, have you posted it yet.....and if so where can I find it. I will be visiting your channel often! Kath
Hi Kath, thank you for subscribing. No, I have not posted my pattern yet. Keep checking back, I need to draw it all out and copy it, etc. Hopefully within a couple of weeks.
I enjoyed your tutorial. Will be looking for sweaters to transform into these handy mittens. Have you shared your pattern yet? I would like to find the link for it. Thanks
Hi Linda -- I don't own a serger but many times wished I did. I'm sure it would make things go more quickly, saving steps. Maybe someday in the future.
I sometimes have trouble with puckers where the seams cross at base of the thumb. I have to pick out the puckering stitches and then resew the seam crossroads with a hand needle. I still can't figure out exactly what I did wrong when that happens, but it is frustrating! One of these days I'll have an epiphany and understand what I did wrong. Until then, I hope for the best and use my seam ripper and hand needle when the puckers appear! Thank you for watching and for your comment.
I'm afraid I don't know the weight or thickness of the fleece I use, but it isn't super thick, just sturdy and warm with stretch. I think polar fleece or blizzard fleece or anti-pill fleece may be a few of the names it goes by. I wish I could be more precise for you. Just the normal stuff you find on the bolts at the fabric stores.
Hi Donna! Thank you for your question. I have used other wool fabrics, and they "work," but sweaters give the nice knitted feel and stretch that enhance the mitten experience. Because the mitten is lined, a thinner wool isn't a big problem, but I still recommend sweaters. Good luck!
Do you sell these mittens? My grand kids live in Wisconsin so of course it gets cold, and they are coming to visit in December. Oh, dining on a dime recommend your channel. Glad they did. I forgot, the mittens are beautiful.
Hi Janice! So sorry your comment didn't receive a response 11 months ago! I sell these mittens both on my Susie Ban Dana Facebook page and in my "BanDanaGrammaCrafts Etsy store. I can sell them for a few dollars chaper on my facebook page because Etsy charges a fee. www.etsy.com/shop/BanDanaGrammaCrafts?ref=search_shop_redirect
OH I love your ending, I needed a good laugh, and don't you just dispize those operator era's??? I don't know how many times I have had to rip something apart! 😒😒 Well, thanks again I enjoyed watching! God bless.... Kellie
I can't find where you explained what the operator error was that caused the bobbin issue. Can you please share? I am new to sewing and trying to learn why that happens to me.
Hi Theresa! My sweater mittens are listed in my ETSY store, BanDanaGrammaCrafts, for $36 shipped. There are a few left there, but I will be posting more in the weeks ahead. You can also look on my Facebook page Susie Ban Dana. That is where I post them first for a few dollars less, and if they don't sell there, I put them in my ETSY store. Thank you for asking!
What was wrong with your machine as I am having the same issue. You did not continue with how to fix it. Love your tutorial, but if you can tell me how to fix mine please.
Did you watch the whole video? I did tell what my problem was. When lifting the presser foot extra high to insert thick sweater material, letting go of the foot and hearing it clunk made me think I locked it down, but I didn't. I still had to push the lever all the way down to get it in the right position. It was because the presser foot was not all the way down before sewing that the bobbin end got snarled. There are many reasons for that to happen, but in this case, it was the presser foot. Thanks for watching, Jeanette!
Hi Connie! Sorry, I didn't see this comment until now. I much prefer to split the palm side of the mitten into two pieces because then you can mix and match fabrics making the mittens much more interesting, colorful, and textured. Two pieces would mean all solid one color or one pattern on the palm side. I think they look nicer having the thumb and palm split into two different sections. Thank you for your question!
As a total newbie, I found this to be one of the most helpful tutorials I’ve come across. You are a born teacher as well as a really clever designer and seamstress. Thank you.
Wow, thank you! Thanks for watching and leaving such a sweet comment!
YOU MADE ME SMILE SOOOOOO BIG AT THE END!!! THE TALKING MITTEN WAS SO ADORABLE!!! MADE ME FEEL LIKE A CHILD AGAIN!!! "HEY WAKE UP!" ALSO...LOVED THIS TUTORIAL!!!
That ending was adorable!
Thank you Theresa, I glad you enjoyed my silliness! Sometimes I just gotta let it out!
26:30 Great discussion of trouble shooting a tangle of knots and the lower bobbin! THANKS!
You're welcome! It gets SO FRUSTRATING! Thank you for watching.

This is long overdue (11 months) but THANK YOU for that tip! I think I will use it!

I liked your helpful hints and I have also run into similar problems when making the mittens and it was helpful to see your solutions.
Going to watch this tomorrow when Anthony goes home - I have a pile of old sweaters - I've been turning mine into dog beds but I like your idea also !!
Always hold your threads from the back, to stop that jamming!
You are so good at explaining things that can be cumbersome to explain!! Great video!!
Thank you Brenda, that was so very nice of you to say and even nicer to hear! It's good to know I can get my point across.
Thanks so much ❤

Try using a walking foot for this type of material. I use it for stretch knits and it works perfectly. No tangles 😇
Thanks for the tip!
Nice!👍

Those mittens are adorable! Great tutorial!
Nice mitten! Pretty sure your machine is a Viking, mine sounds like that when the same problem happens😊! Love your video, thank you☘️
Thank you Patti! My machine is an el-cheapo Kenmore basic model. A neighbor was selling it brand new in unopened box for $60.

Not yet! I'm embarrassingly behind in producing one. Don't give up on me though!
What type of foot do you use and what stitch ? Trying a walking foot and its just pulling out.
Have you tried a serger for tighter seams?
Hi Linda -- I don't own a serger but many times wished I did. I'm sure it would make things go more quickly, saving steps. Maybe someday in the future.
Thanks, this was a great video. Nice job.
You should treat yourself to a new sewing machine! LOL
Thanks Jill, some day I will. Right now I'm just thankful this one keeps going :) .
I'm a messy sewer too lmao
I think there's a lot of us out there! :) Thanks for visiting!
I still struugle with the thumb when sewing the palm and front together. I get puckers!!

Hi. Should the lining for the mittens be thin fleece? I think the fleece I have is too thick.

Sitting here alone at 1 am and laughing at the talking mitten.
Sitting here alone at 1:39 am laughing at you laughing at the talking mitten! Lol. Glad you got a smile. Goodnight!
I can’t find a wool sweater ,but I did find a wool skirt. Would it be too thin ?
Hi Donna! Thank you for your question. I have used other wool fabrics, and they "work," but sweaters give the nice knitted feel and stretch that enhance the mitten experience. Because the mitten is lined, a thinner wool isn't a big problem, but I still recommend sweaters. Good luck!

Listen to her explanation at 26:25
That is so neat! Would a walking foot help with the bulk?
where can i get the pattern
Can I buy what you have made

Sorry, not yet. Life got in the way, but there's still hope! It may happen.
This one has some marks already in the pattern - not sure if it is the same size as you
