Thanks!!,my husband was co Pilot on this trip. This is the track he hauls frieght on...on his job. Robin "Robbie" Richardson is my husband. You did a great job making video,Thanks again!
Paul, the locomotive is still at Spencer and will be running some trips over the next few weeks that you can take your kids to. Check out the NC Museum of Transport website to see what its going to be doing!
Actually the car in the center of the train is actually a gift shop. All the cars on the train have generators underneath that supply the power they need.
Great video, I love how you can see the steam from the whistle way before you can hear it in many shots. Sound is way slower than light, and you've proved it nicely. Thanks.
I only chased it from Grover to Kings Mountain as I work for the local paper and had an assignment right after it came through. I was covering the train for them as well, so I was working but railfanning at the same time.
any chance shes gonna pass through richmind(Virginia), i have a railway that runs past my house and i would love to catch this epic machine in action, and i see you got teh cockroach2008 protection also
Those NS locomotives aren't HEP equipped & can't provide power for the cars (I don't think NS has any HEP equipped locomotives). Also, that gondola doesn't have HEP run through. There's a short car in the middle of the train that looks like a baggage car that's a generator car specifically for the passenger cars. If an Amtrak locomotive were in the train, there would be no need for the generator car, but the gondola would have to move to the end of the train, or btn the 630 & the diesels.
It's actually a Virginia & Southwestern 3-chime, not a Southern long-bell. Aside from this whistle, I know nothing about the V&SW apart from the fact that it was either a subsidiary of or absorbed by the Southern.
+struck2soon 630 can easily handle a 7 car train, but they do that because the trip is either too long for the engine to make it without refueling and taking on water, or there is a length downhill section that NS requires dynamic brakes on. Same reason why 611 needed 2 diesels on the Southern Loops a few weeks back. The 13 mile downhill portion with a 22 car passenger train could have resulted in a runaway without the dynamic brakes of the diesels. But I agree, i'd rather see it run alone. But what can you do? :/
All in good time, buddy. Right now, I'd reckon she'd be out in late 2012 or perhaps Spring of 2013 :) TVRM's just taking their time to do the job right :)

Boy, the NS must be really short of engines if they put a steam helper on the front of these two diesels.
Beautiful! I love that whistle! Well done.
What a beautiful engine! And what a whistle !!!! It is exactly how you would expect a steam whistle to sound! Fantastic. Thanks for sharing !!

Best video of it yet. You were right next to me in Kings Mountain. I rolled up in the yellow Xterra right before it came through.

I believe its an ICRR steamboat whistle

Fantasic video! I can't wait till this Saturday to see it!
Thanks, NS! Yep, I remember ya there. Was a fun day...very long!
Outstanding video, KnightKross!

Love that old Alco Steamer and it could handle those 2 diesels by its self. This takes me back to my Baldwin steam days with AT&SF.
Great entertaining, many thanks!
what a fabulous whistle!

I can't get over how the whistle sounds almost exactly like SLSF 1522's whistle! Very eerie!
Will # 630 be doing any excursions in 2013?
The diesels were used to generate electricity for the coaches
which one of Southern's passenger engines did that whistle come from? Freight engines did not normally use a whistle of that type?
What's with the freight car behind the diesels?
wonder when more passenger cars can be added
AWESOME!!! Love it!!
Does this count as mainline steam? People say we need more mainline steam in the USA.
When is 4501 going to come back?
I understood that they were trying to not use a lot of coal, so the diesels too up much of the load.
Loco looks and sounds good. Shame they felt it necessary to to put a pair of diesels on for such a short train.
