I'd argue that 'we' is just a fragment of the population. Alot of people don't like getting hurt, so they rather try to numb themselves with lies or depressants.
Sven Medyona neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy are my specialties so both exploring the philosophy of consciousness and the science of it. I couldn’t have asked for a better video from him.
I like this podcast, my girlfriend isn't super interested in talking about philosophy so it's nice to have a more conversational type of content that I can put on in the background while I'm doing something. I'm looking forward to the next episode
One small lie in the beginning I'd like to make right is that when you say you add his music to your "poorly animated" videos, they're actually perfectly animated. 10/10 wouldn't change a thing.
For whatever reason I really love hearing these 2 people talking about this one movie for over half an hour despite not having watched the movie before or just listening to a podcast before.
Thank you for discussing “Everywhere at the End of Time”! It’s one of the most poignant and enriching experiences I’ve ever had listening to that body of music.
I watched dementia in my own grandparents while I was in high school, later on in college I found the caretakers everywhere at the end of time. After the first listen, I was honestly unsure on how I felt about life and my own purpose in it, going back to it a couple months later... I had something else happen in my life, but the second listen... man, I actually feel alive for once. The reality of what time we have and the great unknown of life is interesting again. Keep up the great videos, it’s always fun to try to think outside the box while also living in our own moral box.
@@anthonyjoralemon8897 Lmao would have had the same effect on me if I didn't see where it was going in the first half hour. Kaufman is getting predictable! Still, it put a thing or two about myself in perspective (I too tend to idealize people and fantasize about love stories, thinking I will end up alone and forgotten like the Janitor, thus neglecting the people surrounding me) and this podcast provides a nice widening of the horizon how to deal with it.
The movie didn’t even start making me depressed until the end. The hopelessness of the last act was really sad to me because it just felt real. Even though it was still plastered with symbolism, the dark perspective it makes you view the world from can really fuck you up.
If I may chime in with my own interpretation of the scratching. Animals scratch usually for two reasons. One reason is desperation. The other is the mark territory. I think that whatever made the scratches was trapped in the house and it knew that the basement was a way out. The basement itself could represent the whole plethora things from the lower Consciousness levels of the Mind to something that's repressed dark and cloudy.
What I remember from my psych classes, the stage of moratorium is not good in itself. It is crucial for development as you need to explore your possibilities and options but constant moratorium results in halt of development as you do not commit to anything and continue exploring. I'm not saying it is bad, it is necessary for full development but I see it as something that might not be as positive as how I understand you picture it.
Just wanted to thank you guys for recommending "I'm thinking of ending things." Absolutely loved it and your analysis of the ideas in it. Absolutely keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to the next podcast!
Well at least I have a concrete image of why I hate myself, I’m a 19 yr old student and after listening to this interpretation I think I can safely say that the janitor is what I more than anything fear to be but I can see myself on the path to becoming without the knowledge of how to change course. Janitor being a metaphor for ending up alone with a job I hate with nothing to look forward to but my own fantasies
I listened to the entire album by caretaker way before watching the film, so it's such an amazing coincidence that you talked about these two works together because when I watched the film, it literally reminded me of the album which made me think that perhaps the film is related to dementia, aging, regrets and just memories in general. A lot of the film's scenes, i first thought, were about the janitor remembering his past and regretting about it cause a lot of the lines seemed to forshadow his present situation and the eventual suicide. But then the house scene kind of threw me off guard cause i didnt know if it was jake who projected himself to the girl or was it the other way around. Either way I'm so glad Kaufman was the one who adapted the film cause I don't think anyone could've done it any better
Came here to help me sleep since I have to wake up at 5am tomorrow... 23:49 so far, will report back at 4am when I can't get the existential crisis thoughts out of my head. Thank you!
I really love your content and I just so happened to have watched I’m thinking of ending things not too long ago, I’m looking forward to this podcast!! Edit: I just got to the part where you talk about everywhere at the end of time, my friend just showed that to me recently as well, we’re so in sync
I really agree on the point you‘re making at 25:39 about the fact that you can kind of feel 2 characters in the movie that control the way in which Jake is related to. A positive and negative (doubtful) one. It‘s pretty true to how low self-esteem actually feels like, when for example you talk to your friends & family about yourself and those two conflicting characters emanate from you onto and possess them. That causes them to want to say good things about you while they simultaneously feel doubtful internally. I think the movie does a brilliant job of portraying how our self-images get reflected in others.
Great job on the first episode bro, fucking loved it. Can’t wait for the next ones. Would you consider doing your take-away on the myth of sisyphus? I finished reading it a couple of months ago and would love to hear you go in depth with it. It is a lot to do but maybe for a special? You can’t rep that name without covering it on the podcast.
This is the white noise cacophony in my head spoke in coherent words; otherwise lost in oblivion. As like an oncoming tragedy that one can not but just sigh and laugh at. I like.
i read the book in one sitting at two am once, very surreal thing to read at two am. the movie sounds quite different, i’ll watch it sometime soon-not at two am.
If you like weird abstract symbolism representing a character's mental state or life experiences, I highly recommend playing the game Yume Nikki (the original.) I also recommend the dark ambient album Alive with Scars, by Flowers for Bodysnatchers, which is a concept album about living with Multiple Schlerosis.
Ya, no - that was great ;) No, ya - I am glad you discussed that movie. I watched just once and FELT a lot but but did not understand it in the detail you just expressed. Thank you and more please!

I don't know why I throw myself into this subject with full force, I'm just 17 män. Somebody should have done Inception to me later in life.. I don't want to suffer thinking about growing old and dying 24/7, it's depressing. Anyway I just left the movie and I feel kinda dazed, sad and depressed. I don't even like philosophy as a subject. Maybe others are completely in love with it, but I dread what it's pushing me towards, talking about this feels like it's pushing me towards an abyss, a spiral of sadness and as soon as I take a wrong step and fall, I won't come out of it again
