I wasn't even part of the 'emo' movement, or anything even close. I simply thought this band had some of the greatest instrumentation & theatrics I've ever heard. It blows my mind to this day that people could call any of MCR's music "shitty" or "uninspired".
When asked about being labeled emo, Way responded: "Basically, it's never been accurate to describe us. Emo bands were being booked while we were touring with Christian metal bands because no one would book us on tours. I think emo is fucking garbage, it's bullshit. I think there's bands that unfortunately we get lumped in with that are considered emo and by default that starts to make us emo. All I can say is anyone actually listening to the records, put the records next to each other and listen to them and there's actually no similarities." But tell us how you really feel, Gerard? "I think emo's a pile of shit." MCR is not emo
hearing gerard scream 'wake up' through this huge wall of noisy instrumentation is just the most powerful and haunting thing ever and it never fails to make me cry.

Honestly, I'm kinda glad I found this band late. It spared me the sadness of them breaking up. But like, bands breaking up isn't really that bad, things retire eventually y'know? EDIT: FUCK THAT MY CHEM NEW SINGLE JUST DROPPED BANDS GETTING BACK TOGETHER IS THE BEST THING EVER
My dad lived through the 60's, he was part of the stoner hippie movement and has seen so many classic rock bands in concert. He accompanied me and my bff at the time to an MCR concert during this era and it was the greatest night of my Life. My dad said that it was one of the best shows he's ever seen. It was so theatrical, he's said. Gerard coming out on a stretcher was awesome. He loved it when he thought it was gonna suck
MCR is the only band I never get sick of. Their songs are haunting. I listened it countless time but never get bored. One of MCR's fan said good song is timeless yess it's true
While MCR was in a deep sleep, our voices kept screaming and begging them to wake up. And through all of it, it finally got to them. They are back guys. They are back.
Just came to the realization that Gerard sounds different in each album. Like he sounds like Gerard, but he sounds so sad in all of them except Danger Days like he’s just like “sad sad sad sad” and then in Danger Days he’s like “OMG I HAS KID NOW LETS BECOME K-POP AND EMO AT THE SAME TIME!”
TRUE ALSO POSSIBLE THEORY THAT THAT SONG WAS WRITTEN ABOUT THEM POTENTIALALLY BREAKING UP THAT’S WHY I CRY WHEN I HEAR IT AND IT HURTS TO LISTEN TO AND I ALWAYS SKIP IT
I'm starting to think that that one person who disliked every single video is actually in the MCRmy but is still mad about the whole no reunion thingy...or a really motivated hater..I mean heck..anyone would have stopped at the first 11 to say the least
this song is so incredibly cathartic to me as an ICU nurse who worked through the pandemic and has some trauma from that. the beginning when he talks about his terrors, the lyrics "a drink for the horror that i'm in", just wanting to sleep, the end when he sees flames and people he loves dying, and that he can't ever wake up. his visceral screams at the end. that's how i felt the past 2 years. i'm glad i'm on the other side now but this song always brings back those emotions. i love it so much.
i have a thread in my twitter drafts that i never posted about why this is the saddest mcr song. i will now copy and paste it here. whenever i listen to sleep by my chemical romance, like REALLY listen to it, i just start crying and i don’t even realize it. when you REALLY listen to it you realize how sad it is. it’s like he’s telling this story of all the awful things he’s done but he doesn’t feel bad about it and he realizes that he’s turned into this monster and he’s screaming at himself to wake up and change and stop doing all these horrible things. by “horrible things,” i mean maybe he’s murdered people. not gerard, obviously, just this character. the entire black parade album follows the story of this guy and the whole main is death. when he says “shut your eyes, kiss me goodbye and sleep” i think this character is killing someone. anyways, that song is truly like a knife in the heart and it genuinely hurts, especially since it’s after the song mama where he’s basically just going insane and he’s turning into this psychopath saying that “what’s the point in trying to be good because we all go to hell anyways” and it really just stabs you in the heart and comes through the other side. the fact that you can barely hear him screaming “wake up” at the end is what makes it the most heartbreaking song mcr has ever released. it shows that his helpless screams in his mind are being drowned out and buried underneath all these insane and horrible thoughts. he’s saying that people are crying for him thinking about what he’s become and he doesn’t understand how they could because he’s turned into this awful person and he says that he doesn’t feel bad about it and that he’s numb but deep down he is suffering and he wants to change. he’s in this torturous nightmare that he’s created for himself and he can’t find a way to wake up and he is absolutely terrified. yep that was my unposted twitter thread ty for reading
Thanks for the psychoanalysis of the album! I've never thought so deep into the lyrics, as I just tend to enjoy the melodies they make themselves, but I definetly see it now. :O
Not sure if you're still active, but I found your interpretation quite interesting. The album itself is about "The Patient" who is diagnosed with cancer and expresses his thoughts and feelings until dies. Sleep is about his deteriorating state and how he is slowly accepting his fate and reflecting upon his life and the people around him. In House of Wolves he contemplates whether he's going to heaven or hell, and then in Mama he seems to conclude that he'll be going to hell based on his past actions. The album is honestly a masterpiece and has allowed people to interpret it however they please. If you're interested, you should listen to "The Wall" by Pink Floyd, which I assume influenced MCR with this album. It's a story about the rise and fall of a rockstar who isolates himself from society.

The screaming of “Wake up” towards the end is so haunting and tragic. I needed to take a break from how fucking shocked I was that something like this could ever make me feel that disturbed. This song is a true masterpiece
I just want them to come back together. They have left so many if their fans in tears. I won't feel complete with my life if I never get to see them live or see them in another interview or see them upload a new song or at least see them hugging in a picture. MCR, if you guys or at least one of you guys somehow magically read this, please, fucking PLEASE get back together.
you know the feeling when you finally *hear* a song, even if you've already listened to it for years? I just had that with this and it's fucking beautiful
I read somewhere that the tape recording at the beginning of this song is Gerard describing the nightmares he had at The Paramour where the band stayed at for a bit while writing The Black Parade. That article changed my perspective on a lot of the songs
PLEASE MCR COME BACK WE MISS U!!!!!!!!! You've been making music scene I was 1 yrs old and now I'm almost 15 and my whole school won't stop talking bout u PLEASE COME BACK!!!!
Last night i had my first lucid dream, i was terrified through the whole thing and in an attempt to wake myself up i screamed 'wake up' like Gerard did in this song because it was the only thing i could think of
I’ve been listening to this band and song for years and never noticed Gerard singing along with the guitar around 4:00 like it’s so faint but I just realized it today and this song became even more of my favorite. I know him and ray sing it on the live version but it’s still insane it gave me chills. I just love this band and how thought out everything seems to be.
This song used to scare the crap out of me. The first time i heard it was on an iPod nano i found at a vintage shop, when i bought it, after it charged i saw it was already loaded with a ton of music i liked at the time from the previous owner, stuff like blink 182, taking back sunday, my chemical romance, etc. And one night i fell asleep with only 1 ear bud in while it was playing. I hadn't heard the black parade album in its entirety at the time yet. I was waken up in the middle of the night and Sleep was playing but since i had only 1 earbud in, i could only hear the beginning dialogue without the piano, and i thought someone was plotting out side of my door through walkie talkies, then the drums kicked in and i was so relieved
This song is truly one of the best songs I have ever heard in my entire life. The way the guitar, the piano, the drums, all of it just blends perfectly. The emotion that they captured in this song is just so raw and pure that it riles me up every time I listen to it. The lyrics hold such a deep meaning, but even if you weren't paying attention to them you would still love the song. I genuinely cannot believe that some people don't like this...
For days I haven't been able to stop listening to this album just like when it first came out. All the emotion from years past went straight into the delicate masterpiece. And I'm so glad it did
This song feels different in the summer. For some reason I think all my fav memories back in 2021. I didn’t know what mcr was until 2022 which i wish I found them earlier. Early to the summer 2021 was the last days of quarantine and it felt a very different era.

I have to wear uniforms at my school, if we didn't, it would wear all my MCR gear on Monday :(
My dad lived through the 60's, he was part of the stoner hippie movement and has seen so many classic rock bands in concert.
I wonder if Gerard plays this song when he's trying to put his kid to bed???
Bandit would dance to it
I can sleep to this tbh
I fall asleep to The Black Parade and I shower to 3C4SR

Just came to the realization that Gerard sounds different in each album. Like he sounds like Gerard, but he sounds so sad in all of them except Danger Days like he’s just like “sad sad sad sad” and then in Danger Days he’s like “OMG I HAS KID NOW LETS BECOME K-POP AND EMO AT THE SAME TIME!”

I wish they'd have made a 'making of' with this one. Who wouldn't love to see Way in the studio, screaming his heart out for the finale. Epic.
That subtle gut wrenching scream at the end saying “WAKE UP” gets me every time
I'm starting to think that that one person who disliked every single video is actually in the MCRmy but is still mad about the whole no reunion thingy...or a really motivated hater..I mean heck..anyone would have stopped at the first 11 to say the least
this song is so incredibly cathartic to me as an ICU nurse who worked through the pandemic and has some trauma from that. the beginning when he talks about his terrors, the lyrics "a drink for the horror that i'm in", just wanting to sleep, the end when he sees flames and people he loves dying, and that he can't ever wake up. his visceral screams at the end. that's how i felt the past 2 years. i'm glad i'm on the other side now but this song always brings back those emotions. i love it so much.
An actor as the frontman of true musical artists. Makes a great band. Cant believe it's been 10 years. Still here.
i have a thread in my twitter drafts that i never posted about why this is the saddest mcr song. i will now copy and paste it here.
whenever i listen to sleep by my chemical romance, like REALLY listen to it, i just start crying and i don’t even realize it. when you REALLY listen to it you realize how sad it is. it’s like he’s telling this story of all the awful things he’s done but he doesn’t feel bad about it and he realizes that he’s turned into this monster and he’s screaming at himself to wake up and change and stop doing all these horrible things. by “horrible things,” i mean maybe he’s murdered people. not gerard, obviously, just this character. the entire black parade album follows the story of this guy and the whole main is death. when he says “shut your eyes, kiss me goodbye and sleep” i think this character is killing someone. anyways, that song is truly like a knife in the heart and it genuinely hurts, especially since it’s after the song mama where he’s basically just going insane and he’s turning into this psychopath saying that “what’s the point in trying to be good because we all go to hell anyways” and it really just stabs you in the heart and comes through the other side. the fact that you can barely hear him screaming “wake up” at the end is what makes it the most heartbreaking song mcr has ever released. it shows that his helpless screams in his mind are being drowned out and buried underneath all these insane and horrible thoughts. he’s saying that people are crying for him thinking about what he’s become and he doesn’t understand how they could because he’s turned into this awful person and he says that he doesn’t feel bad about it and that he’s numb but deep down he is suffering and he wants to change. he’s in this torturous nightmare that he’s created for himself and he can’t find a way to wake up and he is absolutely terrified.
yep that was my unposted twitter thread ty for reading
I never thought of it like this. Wow.
Sleep....

The screaming of “Wake up” towards the end is so haunting and tragic. I needed to take a break from how fucking shocked I was that something like this could ever make me feel that disturbed. This song is a true masterpiece
this whole song is honestly indescribable. an absolute art piece. this should be in the library of congress

the funny thing about this song being titled "Sleep" is that MCR songs make me feel so relaxed that I eventually fall asleep
OMG YES!! I listen to their music at night, to help me fall asleep. I end up lip syncing along to it for like an hour, but then I fall asleep
Over ten years old and still slaps. It gets me right in the feels every time.🖤
I read somewhere that the tape recording at the beginning of this song is Gerard describing the nightmares he had at The Paramour where the band stayed at for a bit while writing The Black Parade.

This is such an underrated but great song.
One of their best in my opinion.
This band defined my whole early teenage years. I wouldn’t be who I am and probably wouldn’t be alive today without them.
The hardest part is letting go of your dreams
This line always gets me
this song makes me ascend and the fucking story of the album makes it such much more impactful HOLY FUUUUUUUUCK
the voices in the beginning do not help me sleep
For days I haven't been able to stop listening to this album just like when it first came out. All the emotion from years past went straight into the delicate masterpiece. And I'm so glad it did
How fucking great is this song? Holy shit
0:32 I love the hook
Does anyone else speculate that it might just be frank in the beginning part of the lyrics?
Because it sounds creepily like him
WELL NOW I CANT SLEEP BECAUSE OF THIS
Those two drum hits before the song really starts tho 😍 damnnnnnn

This song hits me so hard on a personal level
