Love that hair and that suit! The narrow tie, the shadow plaid jacket, the forelock...so early '60s. Wish it had all never gone away.

    I agree.
Most Pop stars of the late 50's made an impact with Rock and thought they wouldn't last. So then were quickly immersed into the mainline "Variety" music. Elvis went into films and recorded "It's now or never". Cliff Richards first UK number 1 was the quiet ballad "Living Doll" At the time all driven by music, record companies and unscrupulous showbiz impresarios.
The Beatles were nearly recruited into all this - but by being "original" songwriters could play their own tune (no pun intended).
But not before having all their songs bought up by the brutal regime in "Tin Pan Alley". And also, in their way, the Beatles themselves helped to see off Rock n Roll by moving to more family friendly music.....composing some beautiful and memorable songs along the way.

There’s an obvious sense of humor at play here

You are so right. The list of songs written by him (John Loudermilk) is incredible. Recorded by many singers.

You have the wrong year. This clip was filmed in Sydney in April 1961 for Australian Bandstand during Vee's Australian tour down under. It was aired on TCN Channel 9 and filmed in the station's studios. He also performed "Baby Face" (his current Oz hit at the time) on the same show.

I watched him sing this wonderful song, but when gets to the words if you could see what that son of a gun said, notice Bobby roll his eyes, like he wanted to used the swear word, even in his recording he sang sun of a gun said. Kinda like when Mick Jagger on the Ed Sullivan show said the words Let's spend some time together, as opposed to let's spend the night together. You will also notice because of the censors as he had to change it by rolling his eyes. But Jim Morrison ( the Doors) refused to alter his words in Light my Fire, and was going to use the word ( higher) and he didn't care and used it anyway, of course the show was live. What was said went out.

Not a bad song but this was the sort depths "Rock n Roll" music had fallen before the Beatles re-instated it....and it's no wonder

Yes. One of the better songs from the"stagnation period" 60 to 63. Also, I forget who said and I quote. "There are no strings in Rock & Roll".

I never thought of it that way but your right The Beatles really saved what was left of rock n roll and brought the energy back into it

And what year were you born in? I was born in 1945, and there was great music, which the Beatles and the British Invasion totally wiped out with their garbage. A lot of the bad (most) are a total result of the Beatles today in 2021

Kevin Cruz's comment about "No strings in Rock & Roll" - Buddy Holly started using string sections with "It Doesn't Matter Anymore", "Raining in My Heart", & "True Love Ways". There are those who said if Buddy Holly hadn't been killed, he would have originated The Beatles sound. I think Buddy Holly was moving away from Rock & Roll like Bobby Darin - toward Middle of The Road Pop. Other singers of that time had string sections like "Dreaming" & "You're Sixteen" by Johnny Burnett, "Only the Lonely" & "Blue Angel" by Roy Orbison, "Hey Little Girl" by Del Shannon, &"Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow" by The Shirelles. I thought of Del Shannon as an innovator in the early 60s with keyboardist Max Crook's "Musictron" in his band.

@@bobsimmons5620 - Everybody has a favorite period in Popular Music. I had an uncle about your age & when I talked music with him, he agreed with you & dug the 50s & early 60s music. One of my brother-in-laws who was born in 1948 liked surfing music, liked some of the British music (not Beatles), but also liked The Doors, The Guess Who, & Creedence Clearwater Revival.
