- Sonic CD, you say?
Presenting, an early prototype of Sonic the Hedgehog CD for the Sega CD. This prototype was featured at the Yuusei Sega World event in 1992, which was the very first public appearance of Sonic CD in the world. The prototype only features one zone (Palmtree Panic, known as "Salad Plain Zone" in this prototype), but many differences - including a Redbook audio track of the past!

Fun Fact (for those who didn't know): The *You Say!* graphic (shown at: 9:37, 13:56, and: 16:39) is also seen in the earliest screenshots available of the game.
You say? Nice
@Luca Gabriel Yeah, that's what the *You Say!* graphic were supposed to be for, however the goal post for the *You Say!* graphic was later changed in the final release.
@Luca Gabriel By the way, *Sonic the Hedgehog CD* was originally set to be released on March 1993, but the game ended up getting delayed, and the Japanese version had to wait until September 23, 1993.
@@TetraFan1000 Where was that stated? The March 93 release date that is.

Interesting to see that both the Toei intro and the seemingly final versions of the "Salad Plain" present/future and Collision Chaos present tracks were completed this early. Explains why the Toei ending shows both R2 and the lost bonus stage.
There's definitely more to this proto than meets the eye; can't wait to see what ROM diggers can find.
freon Lost bonus stage?
@@fpberserk4690 I assume they're referring to the part in the credits video where Sonic bounces off weird 3D cubes while falling, which is a near perfect match for the bonus stage in Chaotix.
Roxie Mika That was meant to be a bonus stage? I never thought about that, but it makes sense considering that the ending also had a glimpse of “R2”
Thanks for the info.
@@plushifoxed wasn't that just collision chaos? I mean the scenery looked really similiar
Seems like some shots weren't completed yet in the intro and are thus missing.

Really strange that there's a Redbook quality version of the Palmtree Panic past theme, sounds pretty good imo
I kinda wonder does any other sonic cd prototypes might have other cd quality past music?
@@GLXY23 I hope so, it would be a Godsend to get to hear all of the other past tracks, especially that of Wacky Workbench
man I'd really love to listen to the demo tapes of Sonic 3 too
I would love to hear redbook Sonic CD Quartz Quadrant Past :'), well, a man can dream....
I suspect that the CDDA past music may have been a placeholder and they already planned it to be sample based music at this point and just weren't ready yet. Out all all audio tracks on the disc, it's the only one that loops and fades out before restarting.
So the "second"/alternate version of You Can Do Anything is actually the original version? That's pretty interesting.
Anvil Indeed.

@Sir AZ It was never implemented in playable state.
@@PilaCiu Yes it was. What little info we have tells us it was scrapped due to being badly designed and not fun to play.
@@DefinitiveDubs But practically every zone is badly designed in 0.51, have you seen that sh*t? /s
it was scrapped in early development (stage development) from what i know
@@DeskoDev we know what the word "shit" is, no need to censor.
Yeah Sir AZ, we're gonna needa find a proto from sometime after December and before May, likely around mid-to late January to early -to-mid February.

This is the first time we've seen the mysterious "R2" zone mentioned in the game as 2-1, 2-2 and 2-3.
We previously had to look into the games code to confirm the existence (or lack there of) of this zone. Unfortunately it seems that this build predates the zone's creation.
Or the CD's contents were scraped off by SEGA before it was sent for demo footage.
@@hopatoffe1821 Nah, apparently there wasnt much of anything done for R2 besides some concepts, a few sprites and that moment in the intro animation where sonic almost gets chomped by the centipede looking badnik (that we know of currently)
@tyronetiggums6441 i wouldn't take info to heart from Mazin, but the other stuff is plausible, take into account too that my comments have been outdated since info about this tended to release daily around the time. Also the bad future mix of R2 is out there and is the Tech Power Mix from the remix album (somewhat)

Many thanks for dumping the prototype! I was blown away when I heard Palmtree Panic Past in high quality for the first time.
So it plays the intro song on the title screen, but not in the actual intro?
You'll be left with more questions then answers.
@Sleggar Law What about the recording of Sonic ~ You Can Do Anything?
I see some scenes where skipped on the intro, like sonic doing the loop, here he only goes straight instead of going through it
The final verison did that too
Probably cut to make sure the song still fit with the mega cd’s slower FMV
@@90sNath the intro FMV isn't the same in the Mega CD and the later versions
Here's my 2 cents on that redbook audio music used for the past version of the stage: It's only a placeholder.
They only put data for Palmtree Panic act 1 & 2 in this as it is a demo, since they wanted to show a *mostly* working part of the game. Since PCM audio playback wasn't implemented yet into the game they put the then current version of the music as a redbook track to compensate
If that's the case, why not keep the past music as Redbook Audio? I don't think tracked music would've been seen to be more technically impressive than streamed.
I reckon they probably made all the music before engine work began, then later in development realised there wouldn't be enough space for the past tracks so made tracked versions of them to compensate.
@@Alzter0 To me this build is probably one of the earliest "full developped" one with music done on it, there's a chance they thought having CD tracks for past stages would fit in and its only after adding the rest of the stages and music that they realised they didn't have that much space (the 510 proto doesn't have music for past stages)
This is so cool! I've always wondered if there were more Sonic CD prototypes, and there they are!!

It crashes when using Kega Fusion, you should use BizHawk with the Genesis Plus GX core.

Makes me wonder, did they ever make Redbook tracks for the other Past stages? I sure would love them released in a soundtrack disc.
Interesting, Palmtree Panic (or rather Salad Plain) present version looks far more like Green Hill than it does in the final game.
Because its good future and present at the same time
@@anobody8430 I know that the BG and ground pallet are reused in the final game for the Good Future, but this prototype specifically looks a LOT like Green Hill. Wow. Palmtree Panic- Er, I mean, SALAD PLAIN Past sounds so different from the final release. What made them change the instrumental so drastically?
the "past" tracks in the final version are all sequenced 7-channel PCM tracks on the Sega / Mega CD's Ricoh RF5C164 sound chip, whereas in this prototype the "past" track is in CD Audio, which in the final version was "only" used for the "present", "good future" and "bad future" tracks. not sure why they changed the guitar to a sine wave though.
Thanks Drx for found this alpha build of Sonic CD. R2 is in this prototype. I hope they found Sonic 1 Beta and Sonic 2 Beta. Sonic 2 Beta with lost zone Genocide City Zone and Dust Hill Zone.
I don't think Dust Hill was in any prototype made, though I may be wrong. Genocide City technically did make it into the final, in the form of Metropolis Zone act 3.

The version of "You Can Do Anything" heard in the title screen sounds slightly different. But I havent played the game in a while so it could just be me
It is. There's certain instances where SEGA used this early version of the song, even long after the game's release.
Nah it sounds the same as the final. The only early things are Palmtree Panics beta name, the early past Palmtree Panic music. The early time travel warp sfx sound (straight from a genesis sound chip) with a different background, and tiny sparkles when going up while time traveling. The charged super peel out is just normal Sonic’s running speed from Sonic 1 & 2, the You Say goal post. Different “I’m outta here”, death stares you, raises one hand with open fingers, and doesn’t say anything and different jumping animation. Plus he actually commits suicide after jumping and having the classic death sprite which doesn’t show in the final.
@@HyperSonicXtreme Actually, the version of You Can Do Anything here is different; the vocals were rerecorded for the final.
@@HyperSonicXtreme I think you must be deaf my friend, the male vocals seem to be the same as final but the lead female vocals are obviously different. "Hour" and "power" are delivered by the singer with a much more guttural sound than the final version, it's just an earlier take of the song with the same singer that they eventually re-recorded at some point.
