Presenting, a new late prototype of Sonic the Hedgehog Spinball for the Sega Mega Drive!
This prototype rests in between the earliest known prototype and the latest prototype with the original Sonic 1/2 theme. Unlike the earlier prototype, this build can be finished from start to finish. There are some differences in comparison to the later prototype as well as the final. Can you figure out what they are?

@@Ultimatedogfan the final title theme was composed and loaded in with only 1 hour to go when they realised that Sega didn't own the rights to the Sonic 1/2 theme.
I hope someday the CES Chicago Demo version will be found. It'll be very interesting.

@@DavidPavicic1 Not sure what are you trying to say, but if you saw the early title screen shown at Summer CES 1993 then that's it. The only thing I want that build is to see many things that were changed during development. Plus I like collecting prototypes! 😊
I'm hoping that one day someone will find the Sonic Spinball prototype that was shown off in some Spanish Sega VHS

The menu music is different, also when the demo dies it goes to the high score screen then title screen.
It's the REV00 music, the music that you're used to is in REV01

Kinda wished they could keep the S1 title screen music over the final version ones. But yeah, either Nakamura or JASRAC would go after Sega for some extra money on re-releases.

It's only early North American NTSC releases though I believe, and not used in any Japanese NTSC or PAL revisions
The Beta main theme sound awfully ear-grating in my opinion. Much prefer the final.
Yep, Dreams Come True owns most of the classic Sonic music, not SEGA. As far as I know SEGA has never tried to outright purchase the music, probably because royalties are so much more lucrative.

They changed it because Sega Technical Institute (The team in the USA that developed the game) didn't have the rights to use the title screen theme, because that license was owned by Dreams Come True.
Out of all the times I've beaten this game, I have never once seen that multi-ball bonus.
Thank goodness they changed the title music, that prototype version was painful.
It was actually used in the final version but only the first batch had them, they quickly changed the theme in the later prints after learning that they didn't have permission to use the theme.
I love how this came out, no one talked about it, and like a week later there's Sonic 1.

I think it's based on the outfit from the old Archie Comics Sonic series.

My parents gave me this prototype cartridge as a kid back in 2004 in a wrapped gift, I wasn't even aware this game existed despite being a sonic fan and played all the other classic Sonic games on the genesis.
Game over music in this version scared the crap out of me though

Maybe it's just me, but I love the way this game sounds. The music has this awesome gritty sound, my favorite being the boss music.

imagine being a kid in '94 at 11pm booting up this version of the game and that Annoying ass song blasts thru your house waking up your parents.
That's why you turn the volume to 0 before powering on the machine, and slowly turning it up so you can hear something as you play.

Found I found this prototype on an emulator I was curious why I had the prototype theme but I found it I don’t know how to dump the game
It's REV00. REV01 replaced the theme due to copyright problems.

You can get 60fps on the commercial build with an overclocked mega drive. Looks way better.
Yeah but there's still not as many frames of animation as other sonic games. This one was coded in C, an actual programming language which was rare for Genesis. Unfortunately that means the core game engine itself is slow.

I believe this is the 4th found for the Mega Drive version. There's been a whole lot of prototypes for the game gear
One prototype was leaked on BBS some time before the game actually came out, then there was a late PAL proto in 2009/2010, an altered final build with "SegaChannel" XORed at the end of the ROM data in 2016, and then this one.
