They also cut a 2-player coop mode from the game, though it was likely due to bugs and performance issues + no Tails or Amy due to the timeline placement.
The second I saw that, I got to thinking about some time power-up that was originally intended for the final game that would have had a "Past" Sonic helping out the "Present" Sonic.

Sonic once had no Spring Twirl when bouncing off a spring or Peelout animation Palmtree Panic Past had an entirely different pallete and different music The time travel cutscene didn't have a light green background back then YOU SAY! This is such a beautiful sight to see this. I’m glad we saw this as a community. It opened up the view for the CD Saga. It’ll be exciting to play this and go on this trip back to the 90’s once again.

I think it’s meant to be a Japanese pun. Heisei was the period in which the game was released, which went from 1990 to 2019 (the current period is Reiwa, and the period that lasted until 1989 was Showa), so many things in the heisei (pronounced hey-say) period used that pun. The You Say! sign might’ve been a joke referring to the future period being Yuusei instead of Heisei.

The transitions in this beta are much better than the final version IMO. They flow into the following music instead of stopping like in the final version.
Honestly, i like Salad Plain more than Palmtree Panic (except for the name): -More consistent backgrounds between Past, Present and Bad Future -Better Past Music -Actual loops the final version didn't have. -While the background might make it look more reminiscent of Green Hill, i still think it looks visually better.

They didn’t replace it. They just made the final version run at a lower bitrate and compressed it in a different format. Probably to save disc space.

In this proto the past theme for the stage is CD audio and in all the other protos it is PCM audio so it’s the same track just a different format

I like how the prototype Present version of Palmtree Panic is an amalgamation of the Past, Present, and Good Future versions of the round.
The layouts actually match, and it explains the weird geometry present in the present (lol) that's normally inaccessible.
And Im sure they changed it so act 1 doesn't immediately feel like green hill zone right off the cuff
