I did a study on this in college actually, sort of. What most people find soothing about nature sounds such as waterfalls, rain and wind is actually a hint of white noise (maybe pink noise). For people who don't know, white noise is a sound where the entire audible spectrum of frequencies (20 Hz - 20 kHz) is played at once. In nature, the noise is usually very subtle because nature and structures distort and bend the noise, so you might not hear every frequency (not taking human hearing into account). Nice video Joeseph!

@Simon Arnback thank you for the compliment and your exposition on white noise! Very interesting 🧐

So technically the music that is made by white noises are under the 20Hz espectrum and that's the reason of why it is so pleasant to play it in the background or in headphones in a moderate volume, because of the lack of Hz that the base sounds (referring to the "white noises") are under the 20Hz?

@Angular Cross LOL that sounds like a fair assessment

I am highly sensitive too : the noises, bass, the light of the sun..
I didn't understand why at school they switch on the light, whereas there were enough light inside. The white paper reflecting the light tired me.
    The light inside supermarkets too.
I enjoy be on my balcony the night, appreciate the "noise" of the space, and wind.

I had an ex boyfriend who loved loud places. He wanted to go to live music or a club for every outing. I could never fully explain to him why it was painful to me.

Um ... we ARE doing something when we sit there quietly. We are thinking. Or researching. Who pretends to do something?
I have two jobs. One is in the bowels of the library where nobody talks and we all wear earbuds or sit in silence. It's beautiful.
My second job is as a personal assistant to another INTJ (a psych teacher). One of the things we enjoy (other than dark humor and cackling) is sitting there quietly for hours without the need to say anything unless we have something to say.

    • @intjoseph

Resting angry face isn't accurate... it's our Thinking Face. It means we are listening to you or we are thinking.
People take everything so personally. Trust me, we don't care enough to do something like that AT you.
Be flattered we are contemplating you at all. LOL
And yes on the HSP thing and I contribute this to our inferior SE.
And yes it HURTS. Sound hurts. Bright lights hurt. Physically hurt. Too many people too close HURT.
It's overwhelming and I have employed DBT techniques, that I learned for this very reason, at Walmart. LOL

I don’t like when it’s too dark, but I also have always hated bright lights in stores, Walmart in particular.

@@Alex.Kalashnik Dude.. yes. Walmart ... it's ceilings are too high, it is too bright, there are too many people, the aisles are too narrow ... I have literally thrown up after being in walmart. My worst panic attacks have been, you guessed it, in Walmart.
Target doesn't do it to me. I attribute this to lower ceilings and more private feeling spaces. I also think there is a subtle smell thing going on as well.

I study with a tv series or a movie xD I need a distraction for my distracting thoughts when studying or working in quiet places. That way only one thing can distract me. And I am the queen of masking and blending in, or at least i think I am... I don't try to improve my resting angry face that actually happens when concentrated on something, that way I don't get distracted from my momentum.

PS I just was going to comment on ENFPs.
Ok.. first it is impossible to not like somebody who makes it very clear that they think you are the best thing ever.
Second ... my ex ... he NEVER STOPPED TALKING. Like ... HE NEVER STOPPED TALKING!!!!
It drove me bonkers. One time I got very upset and told him to just be quiet and not say anything for ONE MINUTE.
HE COULDN'T DO IT!!! He literally could NOT do it. Wow.
He is the same guy, however, who when I asked him, 'Well? What did you think was going to happen?", replied, "I didn't."
    ............... wtf

I prefer the company of INFJ's. ENFP's are too flighty for me.
Car stereos drive me nuts, too, as do barking dogs and screaming brats. Sudden loud noises always make me cringe. If I go to a concert or movie (rare), I wear ear plugs.

Nice video that rings very true! When I started going to clubs and bars in my teens I could never understand the thrill they got from the loud music, crowds etc. Typically I would blend into the background allowing my more extrovert friends to take centre stage and happily sit and people watch as far away from the music speakers as possible. Years later one of my friends said how she felt safe leaving her bag, coat etc with me as the look on my face (yes I have the typical INTJ RBF) was enough to deter anyone from approaching!

    • @intjoseph
      @intjoseph  3 роки тому

@Philip Richardson welcome to the channel! Thank you for the compliment. I completely agree. Whatever the thrill of loud music and crowds is I will never completely understand. I do however understand the basic psychological aspect of what those things do for an extrovert but I would much rather keep a nice distance

@Angular Cross LOL I dislike loud noisy parties so if you are referring to that I completely agree. If the party is kind of quiet and relaxed or I can find a comfortable place away from all of it then I could be comfortable. Even then though I will probably feel out of place lol
