Great video - I think this is the first time I've seen anyone touch on mobility for Hyrox. I really suffer with this and although I know what to do, I rarely work on the issue... Another area to consider is thoracic mobility. Kelly Starrett provides a great overview of the squat archetype in his book.
Yes definitely you have to think mobility work is something that can improve your time without adding more stress to the body. I love Kelly’s work T spine restrictions are common and would help with wall balls you are right.
Yeah so ideally you would breathe in and brace on the way down and breathe out at the top of the movement but as the weight isn’t too heavy and we are doing a lot of reps its okay to take short breathes out at both the bottom of the squat and as you release the ball. In terms of heart rate you want to train around anaerobic threshold so do a set until your heart rate rises too high and then rest until it settles and then repeat you should be able to build more volume this way rather than spiking and crashing.
Great video, I just recently did my first Hyrox in Houston few weeks ago in the States. Once I got to the wall balls I had an ' Oh Sh!t " moment. I didn't realize just how high it actually was. Being 5'6, it was definitely challenging hahaha. I'm not gonna lie, it sucked 😆😆 Your height seems like a big advantage with this exercise.
Thank you nice work, you’re not the first to be hit by the wall balls. I think height helps but taller athletes often find it harder to squat to depth so there’s pros and cons.
I like your videos , I think you would get more followers if you could condense your how to videos to 1:30 or so and let people choose the long version if they wanted.
Improved my NYC October 2022 time by 15minutes in comparison to March 2022 and yes mobility plays a big role even in burpees. Thank you for your videos.
Great tips! Thanks
Glad it was helpful!

I'm really struggling with breathing during the wall balls. My hr goes sky high! Any advice on rate of breathing or when to breath?

I need this. 1:28:xx total at Hyrox Birmingham with a 11:57 on the Wall Balls. Needless to say this station really let me down
Well just think of the potential gain you can make if you nail that station, keep working on it 👍
amazing video, thank you for doing this :)
My legs tire before my shoulders, is that normal?
Yes that’s normal just means you’ll have to do more leg training relative to your upper body.
Great advice, appreciate the time you take to give out this!
Thank you Neil, hope it helps

Are there any penalties for using the box in hyrox. Can I just ask for one as I come into the station. Many thanks.
There’s no penalty and yes you can ask for the box if you need it

Thank you I appreciate it, I try to put my short form content on my Instagram and keep the UA-cam videos longer for more detail
First hyrox in Manchester in 2 weeks, finding wall balls tricky so this is very much appreciated
New follower!
Thank you I appreciate it I’ll be judging at Manchester so if you see me come say hey.
Will do, looking forward to it
