      What is the left foot braking on the straights for?

    • @deanhoward1374
      @deanhoward1374 5 років тому +3

      @@Aristocrafied I'll be corrected if I'm wrong. It's to check the brakes are still there. This sounds silly but the discs hum (vibrate) at speed pushing the pads away from the disc, so by pumping the pedal it gets the pads back closer to the disc.

    heel toe for rev matching down shifts like a boss

  • @InvincibleRage
    @InvincibleRage 5 років тому +2

    Great video. It teaches good technique for race car driving. I tried this on my Evo X, racing around my neighborhood at night when there was less traffic. But it was hard to heel and toe, as the turns were mostly 90°. I had to push the brakes hard to slow down enough, making it difficult to heel and toe when down shifting, as my foot on the brakes were so far down I couldn't rev match with my heel. But racing like this taught me a new technique. Now I'm faster around corners by needing to brake less, using the clutch to slow down the motor after downshifts and using the momentum to go aroung corners, causing less loss of tire grip and car control because of too much gas, and only giving gas when loss of momentum if felt, givin better car control and speed.

      +kyle thanks! well you need not a fancy car to start enjoying H&T. There is no real pressure out on the clutch while driving. You may notice it sinks, yes but that's the dead zone. He is literally resting his feet on the race clutch but not pressing it. It takes effort for the clutch to budge. So that part that sinks is basically just air.
      If you noticed, he ever so gently primes / presses the clutch just before shifting, just to eliminate the dead zone for perfect shifts. Hope this helps

    At low speeds I like to rest the edge of my foot on the brake and roll my foot on the throttle. I think that is the best way to learn. But if you are going quickly that method is unsafe because you might slip you foot off the brake or miss the throttle. If you have your whole front half of your foot on the brake and then rotate you heel to the throttle then you can have max brake pressure and control and blip the throttle harder. It takes lots of practice to get right but its really fun and improves your driving skills/car control heaps.

    I am curious, i noticed between up shifts you would lightly preload the clutch. Why do you do this? And is this a technique that can be used in say, street racing or daily driving?

    • @zerotohundred
      @zerotohundred  5 років тому +3

      Sharp eye you have. Yes, the preload is applied to the clutch pedal before every shift to eliminate clutch dead zone / freeplay. This helps to skip directly to clutch disengagement for more precise upshifts. It works anytime anywhere and is highly recommended to smoothen shifts. Good luck

    I have a question, when heel toe shifting down multiple gears (say sixth to third) is it better to go down each gear individually or skip gears (6>5>4>3 vs. 6>3)?

    • @zerotohundred
      @zerotohundred  6 років тому +2

      Alfred Walters well either way is fine as long as the revs match. But downshifting individual gears is always preferred. It's good training too

  • @thewaffle1265

    Just a question, I’m watching how to drive a car tutorials and on a normal car you release the clutch until the bite point and then let the clutch come up when you apply motion, is there something special about race cars or is he just doing a normal shift but just so skilfully fast it looks like he would stall to my beginner eyes?

    • @zerotohundred
      @zerotohundred  3 роки тому +1

      You talk about bite point you're on the right path. There's nothing special here, when the car is in motion, and has some rpms, it won't stall. Then, the harder you accelerate, the quicker the shifts should be as it smoothens the transition in between shifting gears. It's very relative to the rate of acceleration. So, low to no acceleration means slower shifting.

    • @muscleshawty1995

      to increase brake temperature before a hard corner. cold brakes in a corner can result in instability and unpredictable behavior.

    • @fabsalomon85
      @fabsalomon85 7 років тому +187

      It's called Pad Knockoff they do it a lot in V8 Supercars and explain it very well too mainly because when you get on the kerbs or especially on a race track the front pads tend to knock away from the discs due to the shock of going all out on a race track so to bring the pads closer to the discs in order to avoid a long pedal or ending up with more brake pressure at the rear and causing the rear wheels to lock you push the front brakes back in place so you have good and firm braking before the corner
