Hey, please put a massive thumbnail in the middle of the screen right at the end of this video so I can't see KGBs face right at the moment of perhaps the biggest reveal in the movie :)
😂😂😂
My favorite thing about this scene is Mike let's him know "I can read you" instead of keeping that under wraps and using it. Make Teddy doubt himself for the rest of the game.
i don't get it. why not keep silent and use it to his advantage? why give up a player's tell when it is one of the best weapons you can have? i've never understood this. the movie claims he 'doesn't have time' to use it to keep beating him which makes no sense to me.
@@michaelweston2285 By revealing the tell, he's trying to tell KGB that he can beat him without the tell. By revealing his hand, he's proving that he successfully read the tell. He's trying to induce KGB to tilt and play sloppy. Beating a sloppy KGB is a quicker win then slowly bleeding him with his tell.
@@tylerbaker2405 i don't get that Teddy is just going to suddenly start playing sloppy. he's a great player, and by simply ignoring the oreos now, which is an extremely easy fix, he's immediately terrible? or on tilt to the tune of losing his entire stack?? in the real world, wouldn't a player be relieved and more confident that they are no longer giving away their hands?
i think the key part of that scene is Mike saying he doesn't have the time to just use the tell. this time thing makes no sense. again, a huge tell is pretty much the biggest advantage anyone can ever have at a poker table.
@@michaelweston2285 He was trying to tilt KGB which he does.
@@aznbigboyjo3 and that's better than knowing exactly when the guy is bluffing or not?
I never liked he had such an obvious tell. No way someone wouldn't have picked it up long ago.
They had to make it big for the film.
Also yeah its really obvious when they zoom in on it and play dramatic music but realistically it could be way more subtle
What was the tell?

Lays down a monster
This movie was underrated
Apart from the poker scenes
This hand almost surely wouldn’t have happened. When heads up ya gotta be aggressive, Mike would’ve been raising that A5 preflop, and KGB would’ve mucked that 4-2 instantly.
So much wrong with most of the poker but you have to go with it, no? It's a cartoon, really.
Actually, for you it looks impractical but the hand is played legit heads-up. Heads-up you play as many hands as you can see and be practical, and you only raise a pair. There is no good 2 cards if they are random, so you don't raise A5 just for the ace, you will never know what calls without a flop, otherwise you will be raised back on an endless loop, and nobody want to be in that position.
@@aandrei1693 you’re wrong, you don’t only raise pairs…if you get AK you’re just flat calling? 😂
Any ace or king in your hand is an automatic raise. You have a statistical advantage over the other player when you have even one ace and they don’t, as if the runout is clean, your ace takes it down.
Heads up you have to play aggressively and fight for the blinds.
KGB had first action pre-flop. That makes it perfectly plausible he could just aggressively raise with ATC and Mike smoothcalls. Also we never see that he had 4 2. It's just Mike's read. Judging by KGB's reaction, we know he was ahead because he gets mad and throws the Oreos. But he could have had a set of 3s or 5s (3s more likely with Mike holding the 5 blocker)
@@terracottapie it likely would’ve just been all in from both guys here after the flop, or even preflop, considering how short Mike was. Probably didn’t have many big blinds behind, so would need to jam a quality hand searching for a double up, or he’ll just blind out. Teddy calls anything if he has pocket 3’s or 5’s, like you’re thinking, since Mikes stack is so short, not much of a risk for Teddy to knock him out.
I understand your point, Teddy raising preflop ahead of Mike would scare Mike off jamming, worrying that Teddy has a pair or better Ace, but when you’re that short and playing heads up, with likely pretty steep blinds at this point, it’s almost surely gotta be a snap jam. Depends on how many big blinds Mike has behind, but judging by his stack, maybe only 10-15? Those are gone very fast in heads up if you just get garbage for a few hands.
his interaction and eye contact with the cookie-hilarious if it wasn't in context.
We got to remember the movie was made before most of us understood all the nuances of the game. At the time, we were all awestruck that Mike read 2-4. But, with A5 heads up, Mike would['ve raised and Teddy would've folded 24.
Yeah, 24 preflop is rubbish, suited or not.
But with a much bigger stack you can call pre-flop and either catch or hope to push him off his hand later if the board pairs or a drawing hand hits. If you're feeling aggressive enough that is.
@@sikwilly45 4 cards that could help you. 16% odds on the turn.
@@teebee522 Not saying that it's not a silly play. But big stacks can have big balls. Gus Hansen made a career out of calling with rags and getting lucky.
@@teebee522 Are you meaning only four outs for Mike? Two A's and two 5's? Sorry, I thought you were looking at it from Teddy's point of view.
Edit: That's how I was looking at it. Teddy had the big chip lead and could afford to call a raise with 2-4...not that he should.
cant belive the clip is only a few minutes first time I watched the movie it felt like 30+ great movie
If Grama was so happy to get his $25K back after the first round, why was he so angry to still get his money back after the second round??

Professional poker players reach a level of competency. They all become equally as good. The game is consistent. What makes a difference is how you manage your money.
I REALLY want some Oreos now.
Teddy should have also had double stuff, vanilla, and mint oreos to snack on so that Mike wouldn't have been able to pick up the tell on when he had a good hand.
Man listening to Poker people talk about the nuances of the game in these comments is like reading a foreign language to me. "With A5 heads up, Mike would've raised and Teddy would've folded 24."
I am the pour tourists in Vegas in the middle of the sharks.

On- down
A question to poker experts out there. How likely is it that a player has a tell as obvious as KGB's "Do I eat my orios or not" and this not becoming common knowledge amongst poker players? That certainly would not have passed by anyone's attention?
you ain't wrong. just great script.
The chances are zero. It's one thing to have a tell. It's quite another for your tell to involve a prop. If nobody picks up on this then you're playing with chumps. Studying your opponents is 95% of poker.
0% chance. Nobody with a tell obvious enough that the entire movie audience can figure it out would survive in poker for a living.
But, this movie is for a non-poker playing audience... as it should be... it's not a documentary about Texas hold'em. Damon's reaction when he finally reads the tell is also quite obvious, again for the audience's benefit. Just the difference between a narrative put to film and real life.
@@8584zender I think it's always bad story telling to overly emphasize important details. I've watched plenty of movies in which I didn't pick up on key things the first time watching them. Those make the best movies. There is something much more rewarding about picking up on subtle details yourself rather than having them thrown in your face. It's like me bringing up a topic that you may be unfamiliar with and then explaining it to you like you're stupid. You shouldn't confuse unfamiliarity with stupidity.
It's not the "eat the oreos" that is the tell. It's HOW he opens them. When he opens the oreos in front of him, it means he has a normal or weak hand. When he opens the oreos beside his head (to hear them), that means he has a monster hand.
“DE FUQ YOU SAY?!?!” 😂
More blackjack related, but interesting to poker players: I sat down to play blackjack real early in the morning once. There were five of us.The dealer dealt the cards and it was a royal flush. I pointed it out and no one even pppgave it a glance. The dealer said, "Sir, this isn't poker, it's blackjack', like I didn't know what I was playing.
If you’re playing blackjack early in the morning, you’re an addict
"You must be kicking yourself for not walking out. Bad judgment."
Ironically, these are among the truest words spoken in the movie.
The movie is great, but it's basically a litany of bad poker decisions, and Mikey never (or barely) learns any of the lessons.
Truly strong players are immune from personal goading. That's not how they make bankroll decisions. Bizarrely, Mikey goes on to narrate his decision to keep playing as "not personal." In this way, the movie is a mess.
Mikey also tries to narrate why he gives away the tell, even though it's purely for clue-ing in the movie watchers. If he really was on limited time, he'd have quietly taken advantage of that tell all night. Again: another explanation that makes no sense, and which contradicts Mikey's actual decision (to reveal the tell).
I'd definitely show the movie to beginners because it glorifies beginner mistakes. There are many, many poker lessons to be derived from this movie.
Only if you could lay that down, but some movies the bad guy just keeps getting up after being taken out. Don't forget it's a movie
Teddy would have disguised the strength of his hand better if he ate chocolate chip cookies...
Pay that man his money
"Layss down a monstore."
I never understood why Gramma was pissed. They got their money back.
They would of owned him for the rest of his life. With no way of him paying it back. KGB would of told Mike do it or we will kill worm.
Same. Gramma’s beef was with Worm. He gets paid at the end. Mike loses, he owns, or kills him. Mike wins or loses , either way, Gramma gets the outcome he wants. Shit, he’s the only guy in the room with nothing to lose.
I think the debt was going to be doubled if Mike lost which means not only would Gramma make more from Mike but he could also increase the interest of what he was owed. Not to mention the potential in extorting Mike further for his elite poker skills.
There is not a single player in the world that would have laid down A5 having top two on that flop in a heads up match. If this was real life, Mike re-raises if not shoves the farm in and Teddy calls and Mike possibly boats up on the river. Nobody lays down top 2 with a rainbow flop in the history of the game without seeing a turn card.
This hand happened in real life. Look up Bijgaart fold
Poker isn't played in a vacuum and GTO only counts for so much in a heads-up match with a huge metagame along for the ride. Poker is situational, not absolute. Anything can and will happen based on the players, the stacks, the cards, the reads, and (in tournaments) the payouts.
"not a single player in the world"
and then you're just told about one in real life, plus there are a bunch of videos of hero folds you can easily find on youtube.
I don't discount this theory, however a beating of a lifetime from a loan shark might have you on overwatch for tells and maybe your not "feeling" the run out
And yeah after reading the comments about a real life example, it ses this theory has drowned a terrible death
I think part of this scene is that Mike doesn’t confirm that the Oreos is the tell. It could be anything and that is what shook KGB the rest of the game.
KGB does figure out that the Oreos are the tell since he throws them against the wall which is cut from the scene here.
@@kendo79 correct
@@kendo79 if the oreos were the tell, why did he keep losing after.
I thought it was something else, a subtle thing he noticed. Why he continued to be able to read him even after he threw them away.
@@matthewdh123 Mike even says, he could have used the tell, but he didn't have time to exploit it (he had to pay the debt by midnight). KGB kept losing after simply because he got outplayed. ("ALL NIGHT, CHYECK, CHYECK, CHYECK... HE TRAP ME!")
@@matthewdh123 because he got rattled
A better hand would have been if Mikey had had 22, flop comes 29Q and Mikey reads him for a better set. 222 on a 29Q flop is close to a "monster hand."

Lots of string betting in this movie.
Id like to see what happens in rounders in an alternate universe
In Act I, Mike gets away from two pair A 9 when the river makes a flush but doesn't fill him up. KGB wins a small pot. Mike goes on to win a few more medium sized hands, cashes out and pays off Worm's debt. 20 minute movie, the end, roll credits
