For those saying, "wow, how honorable he's going to pay him". The guy runs a high stakes underground game. If he didn't pay him, his game is ruined, his reputation is ruined. No one will ever play there again, and teddy wouldn't be allowed to play at any other games. He pays him the 70k he won, people see that he's legit and won't screw someone, even an enemy. So now, he'll make 10x moving forward running his game.

I met John Malkovich over 10 years ago when I was an extra in Secreriat. He is a wonderful, compassionate, and truly great person who loves animals, respects people, treats others with respect and in my opinion one of the most versatile and talented actors ever. When he portrays a character you really believe he is that character.

@@onlyfacts3101 Well I stood in line for almost 5 hours for the casting call, and considering my appearance and the fact I actually had my own wardrobe of early 70s vintage clothing I became a shoe in. One of the scenes you can find me in (of 6 total) I was a horse trainer in the stable after the first race where they lost at Belmont. In that scene, I was standing next to a horse named "Topper" which Malkovich had ridden in a previous movie (Jonah Hex). In this scene, Malkovich fires the jockey who walks over to me. @M D........Likewise. One of my all-time favourite films. Thankfully, I know absolutely nothing about poker or gambling - but this film contains all the right ingredients: exceptional and beautifully poetic dialogue, brilliantly directed and acted, amazingly nuanced and believable characters, thoroughly absorbing storyline and a haunting soundtrack.
I have the DVD and watch it at least twice a month. It never disappoints and like a fine Peter Bruegel painting, you always discover something new every time you see it. In fact, I would strongly argue that it's Damon's, Turturro's and Norton's finest performances. But to me [and I'm not Jewish] Martin Landau's stunning 'Destiny chooses us' soliloquy is utterly mesmerising.

John is splashing his chips all over the cards, you cant make the turn or the river because they are covered in chips. When he keeps splashing arrogantly and defiantly while the cards are beign dealt and all along hes beign strung along. Texas Holdem at its full glory. Love that Johnie Cheng scene too at the start of the film, this was just around the time Texas Holdem was mesmorizing audiences across the globe. World Series of Poker.

It is a good movie, especially for poker enthusiasts. I think the reason it doesnt get more respect honestly is because it is also a movie about addiction, which although can be real powerful at times, rarely make them popular films for people overall. Right. Remember Mike wasn’t there to beat Teddy KGB and win his money back; he was there specifically to win enough money by dawn to pay off his debt to Grama (and by extension Teddy KGB himself). As long as Mike is still at the table Teddy wins.
Both players know this, which is why Teddy taunts Mike to keep him there, and why he gets so frustrated when Mike plays conservatively - he’s supposed to be betting aggressively into Teddy because he’s on the clock - and why it’s so satisfying that Mike completely turns the tables.

One of my favorite characters by this wonderful actor. I've heard people complain that his Russian accent isn't right. They don't get it. It's not Malkovich's accent. It's Teddy's accent. Teddy knows that people fear him, and he works to create and enhance the mystique around him. Teddy KGB uses that accent, that speech pattern, to keep his opponents off balance. It's brilliant.

The only way this could work is if KGB was convinced that Damon's character is a noob. The film begins by Damon explaining that he came to play KGB several times to make him think he's a noob and he lost big to him in a quite noobish way. So it makes sense that KGB underestimated him. He's also a very aggressive player and they can get caught in their own momentum.
Then again, Damon's character was well known in the poker community so it would make sense KGB had heard him being a pro.

Two things about this scene never made sense to me.
    - First, Mike is already well ahead in chips and has Teddy covered. So even if he lost this hand, he is still playing. But that's Hollywood.
    - Second, when the flop comes out and Mike calls Teddy's bet, Teddy says 'you're on a draw, Mike.' This line never made sense to me. The flop was 6-7-10 rainbow. So the only hand Mike could have had that would have been a draw was 4-5 for the bottom end of the straight. The only other hand that would have made sense was 8-9 (what he had) but that's not a draw, it's a made hand. It makes no sense that Teddy would have been betting so hard into Mike thinking he was on a draw in that spot. If I were him, I'd have had alarm bells going off like crazy.

For example, Teddy KGB busts an Oreo in half whenever he has the winning hand, but somehow does it without consciously realizing he does it. In real life poker no half decent player is giving away the fact that they have a good hand with physical tells. It's easy to avoid doing. Don't forget KGB bought up Worm's $10k debt just so he could own him after he got out of prison several years later. He did that purely for revenge the only way it would make any financial sense is if KGB always knew that Mike would eventually get conned by Worm and end up taking over the debt.

Also, after the river card was dealt, Teddy went on about Mike’s hopes and dreams going down the drain and he was going to meet a dark fate. If Mike didn’t have a hand, he could have folded and still had plenty of chips to continue the game. Just my take, I could be wrong.

some are missing the reason why teddy pays him, etc. it's not so much about teddy kgb's personal integrity, which is still an element, but more so it's about the integrity of the card house which teddy is running for the russian mob. other players are there. if they see mike get beaten up or killed and most importantly not paid his winnings, then that card room dies. no one will give them action if they don't believe they'll get paid. teddy's bosses would not accept his personal reasons for them losing a revenue source over mike's relatively small winnings or teddy's personal grudge. teddy pays mike because he's not only a professional card player with integrity, but also because he's a professional criminal.
