Giselle - Dance of the Willis (The Royal Ballet)

- The Royal Ballet performs the Dance of the Willis from Giselle. This classic Romantic ballet returns to the Royal Opera House this November. For tickets and more details: www.roh.org.uk...
Giselle is the classic ballet of the Romantic era - and, for the dancer performing the title role, one of the greatest challenges in the repertory. Peter Wright’s production, a classic itself, perfectly achieves the dual aspects of the ballet, moving from the naivety of young love between Giselle and Albrecht in the village setting of Act I to the ethereal Wilis in Act II’s eerie moonlit forest. Rich in vivid character detail and poignant depth of feeling, Giselle is a reminder of ballet’s power to move and thrill.

when the rest of the ballerinas enter it’s literally the most magical think ever
It gives me goosebumps, it's the most beautiful thing I've ever watched. Perfect
My favourite part is always when the corps de ballet dance
The favourite part of my favourite ballet. Giselle was my introduction to ballet, when I stumbled upon while channel surfing on TV as a child. Never danced myself though, and still regret it.
never too late to start
It's not too late! I started dancing ballet last year and I am 44! There may be adult ballet classes in your area. Life's too short to have regrets.
Same here! I started when I was 24, now I’m 30, I’m on pointe shoes and this semester we are doing this exact part from Giselle. Obviously adapted to our level, but the feeling when I nail all six arabesque in a row is just wonderful.
Must we wait for a law to be passed that all dancers name appear on the video.Respect dancers.
I agree. Really wish the ROH would take the trouble to name the corps dancers.
My favorite ballet ever. The second act is the best.
Beautifully executed - congratulations dancers love it.
WHO are the soloists????? How disrespectful to not identify them EVERY TIME a video is posted.
@@hannahreynolds7611 Agreed!!!
I believe the first is Olivia Cowley, the second is Beatriz Stix-Brunell and the third (Myrtha) is Itziar Mendizabal!
Would be nice if the dancers were credited in the description. Am I right in thinking it's Olivia Cowley, Beatriz Stix-Brunell and Itziar Mendizabal?
I'm pretty sure it is.
Yes, I thought the same! I think those are the dancers
Thank you so much for this. I wondered about their names.
I thought the second was Beatriz too
how can y'all tell the difference though? they look so similar in those hairdos, makeup and costumes
Semplicemente Meraviglioso il balletto ed eccezionale la Compagnia.
Vou ver hj mais tarde! Amo Giselle já vi ao vivo uma vez aqui em BH mesmo no Palácio das Artes
Sometimes I think that the Myrthe scene is my favorite moment of 'Giselle'---or of any ballet, for that matter.
I always feel wafted back to Paris...1840s...divine...
Adam wrote 14 ballets. Wishing RB might explore 'La filleule des fées' one day?
Have you seen Monica Mason as Myrtha? It’s on UA-cam. Just type that in. BEST MYRTHA EVER. The performance is dreamy!
Of course she teaches Myrtha now. That’s also on UA-cam.
BEAUTIFUL , the willis ♥♥♥
Monica Mason has never been bettered in this role. Chilling, other-wordly performance.
Monica Manson is the greatest Myrtha of all time. But from the modern era Marianela Nunez from the Royal and Angelina Vlashinets + Ekaterina Shipulina from the Bolshoi Ballet are also great as Myrtha. Just look for Ekaterina Shipulina's performance (she's in the full Giselle video with Svetlana Zakharova and Sergei Polunin)
My mom used to be Myrtha so I love the character ❤
Absolutely Marvellous Bravo 👏👌🌹
Estou sem palavras, ficou tudo lindo perfeito.
A melodias se armonizou muito bem com os paços perfeitos das lindas bailarinas.
I LOVE the Willis
So beautiful 😎❤️
can you put the names of the dancers in the description please? 2nd and 3rd looks to me like Beatriz Stix-Brunell and Itziar Mendizabal, not sure about the first soloist.
Совершенная красота!!!!
0:55 my fav part
If I were a choreographer I would make a ballet called Myrtha. This character is hardly ever done well, yet a demanding part and a very interesting role. It might be me but I am hardly ever satisfied with her representation. I believe if one searched a bit on her insides there would be worlds to be discovered. (like Marcia Haydee did with Carabosse).
By the way, I adore the second soloist, the girl with the dark hair!
you need a woman who can jump like a man.
@@bobloblaw9679 And who can be powerful, cruel, tragic and vulnerable.
Great idea. There's footage on YT of Monica Mason in the role - if you watch her rehearsing the newer dancers she goes into some depth with the interpretation, and Myrtha's actions. Fascinating.
@@denisehill7769 thank you. I have seen her not long ago on youtube. I love her Myrtha. I find her stunning!
@@L-Ondee Lovely classical technique - and a glare that could turn any man to ice. Amazing dancer :)
BRAVA, BRAVA, BRAVA! WHAT CAN ONE SAY! Divine. In my next incarnation if I can't be a Prima Ballerina Assoluta, then let me stitch the costumes, make tea etc, but let me sit front row center as part of my pay! Welcome back, please give me info on streaming The Dante Project- cost, how to's etc since I am stuck in Hamilton, Danceless, Ontario...( our wonderful National Ballet of Canada had to stop coming here, not cost effective, and I can't work Toronto into my life, don't ask...) BRAVA. ( how is Beatrix doing?) A balletomane from a place even Dante couldn't imagine...Zizi
The Akram concept for the Dance of the Wilis is just beyond compare for me.
C est vraiment gracieux
Lindo
so that's where my teacher's saute routine music is from. nice
LMAO my teacher uses this for grand battements! i was searching for this music for forever
Why don't some people just stop whingeing and enjoy the music and dance. You really do come across as pretentious snobs. It's great the video has been uploaded armchair critics need to learn to stop being so indignant. Personally I loved the video in its entirety. Thanks for posting it. The dancers were fantastic and the music superb.
Unglaublich gut 🤍
🤩🤩🤩
Как красиво❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
thx
Superb. 👏👏💖
Lindoooo👏
It would be nice to mention the French music composer : Adolphe ADAM - 1803/1856 - Ballet Gisèle composed in 1841.
❤
There are good motifs and lace that can be used for ballet clothes in the site
Perfct
🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Lovely , who are the Dancers please. Perhaps I should say bonzer as well. That did make me smile 😊. In case you need to know , bonzer means terrific, it’s great ect. It a compliment 👵👵👵🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
They cut too soon and missed the best bit
Love Itziar Mendizabal.
How does 1 stream - on Oct 29, 2021, The RB is offering it's sublime, The Dante Project, commemorating 700 years since Dante's Masterpiece was written with astonishing choreography, superbly talented dancers, sets and of course, the orchestra- DO YOU PAY A FEE OR MUST YOU HAVE, YOU TUBE PREMIUM? PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Merci, namaste. Z from Canada.
No one is better as Myrta as Toni Lander
When you remember they’re dancing literally in front of Giselle’s grave marker though
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜👏👏👏👏👏
I’m doing this dance In my ballet show and I do not look like that on point 😭😂
獨俱有的古典美
Q hermoso q diera q mi nieto estudiara alla con ustedes
what is the meter in this music ?
💜⭐💐😍
I don't see much of the Willis plural. Where's that magical part where they all dance together?
Search Giselle Act 2 the Willis Opera de Paris. It's at or near the beginning.
This seems under-rehearsed. Both soloists are bit awkward - not graceful and flowing. The Corps as well. Seems an athletic exercise, not conveying the mystery of the Willis.
bruh stap
It was definitely intentional, not everything in ballet is 'graceful' and 'flowing', it's acting. Especially in the last performer, they did an amazing job at giving the impression of someone really forced to be dancing with someone until they died; it's almost puppet-like, reflecting their assigned fate as wilis.

Am I the only one that thinks Mythra's jumps were really heavy and her upper body was rigid 😬
Well, you don't have to write it this way. Not in public. She don't have the leading role for no reason. 🧐
You try going on point🤣
I mean, she is supposed to resemble a corpse, so I believe that "rigid" and "heavy" really were the point
listening to the sounds of her shoes hit the floor like bricks…. and the shaky landing and incomplete transitions…. roh definitely could have made a better decision when casting….
@@audrey2498 Maybe you should make a casting or should try to get the role by yourself. I am sure your opinion is this high ranked and important. You could definitely make it better 🙃😒
Tmavá ponurá scéna, baletky uniformní jedna jako druhá, podívejte se směrem na východ jak má vypadat současný balet.
Смотреть невозможно 😂
Can I get the name of the first dancer?
I would say that it's Olivia Cowley, but I´m not very sure.
@@sibellesibelius5029 that’s what I was thinking! but i’m not so sure either
I am 80% sure it’s her - Olivia Cowley. Can’t think of anyone else.
Ok one more year you dancing my life when i was russian.....oh... Will not have the replay i Will not kill myself because of manys of you tô bê a "card network
First
Ужасные виллисы, они прыгают как пингвины. Неудачные костюмы довершают эту трагедию.
The masculine, graceless one at mark 2:01 ruined the work of everyone else. Why was this person cast?
Do you actually understand the narrative of the ballet and the part Queen of the Wilis has in it?
@@anneharrison1849 I've watched this ballet for almost 40 years. Never did I see anyone so graceless in that role as the person dancing in this example. NOR was it said that the role had to be danced in such a way. Nor was it said that the role must be danced by a man.
Compare! ua-cam.com/video/GYx3lxsCAl4/v-deo.html
@@hannahreynolds7611 I looked up this dancer and it isn't any better in anything else. How there was a promotion to principal is incomprehensible.
And it is male. The movement is led with the shoulders which is impossible for a woman. A woman's balance is close to the lower abdomen because the hips are large. Men move with their chest because the shoulders are large.
This person moves like a man and the quality of movement is different.
@@kerrytakashi12 You are right, I agree.
While I will agree she is landing rather hard and isn't my favorite Queen i will argue thats its a man🤣🤣🤣
That is not Myrta, that is Carabosse!!! Really awful
Ur not the only one… and please stretch those hoofs when doing the entrachattes!
It is not even horrible, it is just worth of a bag of rotten tomatoes. This is not Giselle, this is not a ballet, this is not even an acrobatics. A bunch of half-drunk, dragging horses wrapped in tunica.
