    The redesign in the engine was more for practicality and reliability than for power (obviously). You now get a timing chain instead of a belt that only needs to be serviced every 200,000 miles. Subaru knows what matters. They still blow all the other small SUVs out of the water with the Forester and have been for some time now. I liked this review, just focused more on nitpicking rather than what matters.

      Just bought a 2011 Forester a couple of weeks ago! Gary Rosen, have you had any issues with the oil? Mine has 90,000 miles and we have all of the service records, so shows reg oil changes. We are also the proud owners of a 2008 Subaru Impreza Outback w/ 160,000 and going strong!

      I'm thinking of getting a 2011 2.5x manual with 104k. Incredible shape. Had the small block replaced and doesn't drip or burn oil. Good idea? Its for the occasional offroad and baby mobile

    Nothing wrong with being practical. I am in the market for a crossover/small SUV that is not expensive, but isn't a cheaply made vehicle. I tried to overlook Subaru, because they just screamed guy's with man-bun's since that is what I usually see driving them. But there is no denying the fact Subaru gives you what you really need in a vehicle for snowy conditions, as well as road trips or running errands. So I am sold, plus with all the research on this particular generation of Forrester, they hold up better than almost all of their competitors.

      rly??? i'm in the market for a suv (am not well off financially). looking at 2011 forester 2.5 'XL' 180,000 miles for $5,800... any opinions?

    I was considering this car until I found out how much repairs are. Over $700 per year. A Honda CRV is about half that.

  • @Tie626

    Subaru Forrest is certainly a cut above Sportage, Rav 4 and probably CRV. I still don't get it why it sell so less.. i.e. here in Dubai

    @stevehammes Steve. I do enjoy your reviews and will continue to watch. Fun to drive, great value, great safety, great visibility, clear differentiation by the brand from the others. I have a 2010 forester xt limited and a 2011 wrx limited. After driving 7 hondas, 1 bmw and 1 audi I believe when you opt for the turbo, you have the best performance cars on the road for the money. Base model forester is underpowered, but turbo is a different animal.

    Buy a Myron & Davis Navigation and Audio System if you're buying with or without the navigation system. It will accept the backup camera and sensor connection as well as the connections for the audio controls on the steering wheel. It's a lot better than both the Navi systems that Subaru offers for the Forester. It may cost around $1500, but it's still worth it. There's also iPod connection, Bluetooth Streaming audio, DVD playback, and so much more.

    2011 Forest diesel is an absolute lemon of a car... in spite of regular Subaru servicing (where not much was evidently done) and DPF cover ups, in spite of frequent highway driving, I have watched this car slowly fall to pieces. Having purchased the car 2nd hand (from Subaru dealership), I have just under 1 year of decent driving, followed by 3 years of nightmare mechanical issues- mainly to do with the DPF. Apparently Subaru are very aware of the problem and trying to wipe their hands of it. Lost all faith in Subaru servicing too...

  • @Johntkr

    Subaru engines run parallel to the ground; this gives a much lower center of gravity, which allows for better control around turns. For about 20 k you can get great acceleration when pulling into local traffic openings. Slippery weather is better suited to Subaru than any of its competitors. If you pay 35% more, when buying all wheel drive from competitors, you will get inferior mileage.

    I have to agree with Steve here- how after 2 years could the best they do is improve the 2.5L by 1 mpg. The least they could've done was improved it by 1 mpg and gave it a hp and torque boost. Also still a 4 speed automatic? WTF...

    Dude, did you read the whole thing? I said the Subaru Tribeca compares to the Dodge Journey. Mainly, with the three row capability. The Forester which is tested here almost has no equal to any other small SUVs.

    I agree; Subaru also has a CVT automatic which is something standard in the Outback; it should be placed here. For a top of the line engine; there should be the same boxer 6 the Outback has with a 5-speed auto.

  • @stevehammes
    @stevehammes  12 років тому +2

    Biggest? I'm not sure what you mean by that but you certainly weren't referring to sales, seeing as how Honda sells 3 times as many CR-Vs every month than Subaru sells Foresters.

    • @psdaengr911
      @psdaengr911 6 років тому

      Honda makes a good vehicle, but the CR-V is becoming more posh and less utilitarian every year, and it is a cramped, barely 5 passenger vehicle with limited cargo carrying capacity and increasingly too high a level of interior finish to be practical. The only Honda sold in the US that competed with the Forester's utility at the basic model level wasn't the CR-V, it was the Element, which was a much better value for transporting 4 people plus cargo in comfort for moderate distances. The Element's sales declined because Hionda stopped trying to sell them. It was so reliable and simple to maintain and it lacked the kind of glitz that becomes quickly dated, so people kept them longer, and the buyers were not who Honda had (very poorly) targeted. . Each time that Honda tried to make it more like the CR-V, and less like the Subaru, the Element became less attractive to the people who had been buying them. Now Honda has NOTHING to replace it, so those buyers are going to otyher brands.
      When they dropped the Element, Honda should have introduced a CR-V varient specifically to provide what the Element offered, which wasn't the goofy side doors, the tall boxy styling, or the magically transforming seats, but the basic utility of a durable vehicle that owners wouldn't be afraid to get dirty. That niche will be served by Subaru and compact commercial euro-boxes like the Ford Transit.

    @ouwat4life
    That Dodge Journey is definite upgrade from the past. However, the Forester doesn't really compare with the Journey. If you want an actual comparison with a Subaru model to compare with the Journey; it's the Tribeca. It has more horsepower for its V6 (283 hp) as compared to Subaru's Flat Boxer-6 (256 hp); available in Tribeca, Legacy, and Outback. Also, the Dodge has the better fuel effiency for AWD 24 mpg highway as compared to Tribeca 21.

    Saying that Subaru sales are based on perception of it being a 'lifestyles brand' is to ignore certain practical qualities, such as durability. Why else would subaru engines be so popular for small homebuilt aircraft, where reliability and durablility are key attributes? Not any Honda, Chev, Ford, orToyota engines that I can think of are used for this demanding purpose. Volkwagen aircooled flat fours are the only other commonly used car engine for light aircraft.
    This is narrow minded and biased 'review', in my opinion.

    • @growingup4487
      @growingup4487 Рік тому

      not true, it has to meet epa emission and fuel economy standards. the MLS heasgasket which suabru had for years would've fixed the ej253 head gasket issues but subaru cheaped out.

  • @Soob4ME
    @Soob4ME 13 років тому

    Subaru's working on their direct injection. Should improve the power and fuel mileage noticeabley. And also this new engine SHOULD be more reliable. There are NO coolant passages passing from the block to the head. Goodbye headgasket curse!!! Uses a timing CHAIN too, one less thing to replace at 100,000 miles.

If they are still using A DATED 4-SPEED A/T, then they have a lot to learn about the 5 to 6 speed A/T standard now in most Crossovers or Small to Med SUV models in the market now.
