  • "Reskinning" RV Door
Today, Sharon, one of the Two Tired Teachers will show us one method of Reskinning an RV door.
This is actually "Reskinning the Door," Part 2; however, you won't find a Part I. Sharon said she is sparing us that.
The reason she is working on the door is because over the years, we've developed a number of stress cracks on the door. At first Sharon had tried using a textured paintable wall paper on the door. The problem was it didn't stick well. Not one to let that deter her, she tried again with some
    permanent vinyl wall paper.
Before she even opened the wall paper, she thoroughly cleaned the door. Since she had used another product on it, she wanted to clean any glue off the door. After cleaning the door, Sharon taped around the window with some painters' tape. The vinyl says it's permanent, and if any got on the window, Sharon wanted to be able to simply peel the tape.
With the backing still on the vinyl, Sharon laid it out and taped it to the door so that she could easily cut around the window with a razor blade. She did the left side of the door first, then repeated the process on the right side.
To do the top of the door, Sharon took the template of the door, laid it out on her dining table, and cut the vinyl using that pattern. Again, she did the left half of the door first, and then she did the right.
The finished product is beautiful. It's been over six months, and the vinyl is sticking extremely well.
A word of warning: Things may not be perfectly centered on the door. One side of ours was 4" while the other side was 4 1/2."

This video only covers up the cracks. Easy just to replace the entire inside skin. Home depot sells 4x8 fiberglass panels in white or grey textured on one side for @ $45. I just fixed my door yesterday and it took @ 2 hrs. Take door off, remove hardware, 4 screws on bottom and bottom trim. Get couple putty knives and pry off door u shape trim carefully and window trim. Tear off old skin and use as templet for new panel. Cut new panel with circular saw and jig saw. Put back together carefully and use wood block and hammer to set trim over edges. Better than new! Now solid 3/32's thick.

You are absolutely correct: that's a much better fix if you have a circular saw and a jigsaw. Our goal was to cover the cracks to prevent damage. Thanks for the tip.

Hey, Cassie. We are both just fine. I have to agree with you that Sharon is very handy. If we had to pay for all of the minor repairs and upkeep she's done, we'd be out thousands of dollars.
It's great to hear from you.

had the same issue with our 2019 Rockwood Mini Lite 2506s. I ordered 2 rolls of vinyl wall paper from Wayfair. Going to sand the finish down and tape the edges and remove the window. Hopefully I can make this look better.

This happened to our 2018 TC, my husband surgically removed the skin so to not damage the insulation and replaced it with a thin piece of Formica, this was not super hard or super easy and yes you need some tools to do it right, but it looks like a brand-new door, just better.

Hi I'm from Pasadena Texas close by downtown town Houston and was wondering if have ya any good recommendations for places in texas for star gazing and swimming with cabins and tents and rv allowed for the texas summer basically for family vacations with kids

Davis Mountain State Park in Fort Davis is a park I would recommend. It has a 39 room hotel with a pool. The pool is only for hotel guests. Indian Lodge is in the Davis Mountain State Park. You can star gaze at the park, or for a real treat you can visit the MacDonald Observatory. The observatory is run by UT and it has massive telescopes. You'll want to go to the star party. Students man the telescopes and they will make sure that you see what there is to see.
If that doesn't work, you might try South Llano River State Park. If you don't want to camp at the park, several places are in Junction where you might like to stay. The park is a dark skies park.

We were really both teachers. Sharon taught American Sign Language to grades 9-12. I taught English I to high school freshman for 32 years.
