BETTER Than Yard Mastery Stress Blend Summer Fertilizer

- One popular summer fertilizer is the Yard Mastery Stress Blend - I've actually brought this up before in other videos but this year instead of applying Stress Blend I've decided to put something together that's even better for my lawn. I want the best summer lawn fertilizer for my lawn and although the YM Stress Blend is good; it's not the best.
I'm putting together a blend of naturally sourced nitrogen and OMRI listed Potassium paired with Calcium, Sulfur, Humic Acid, and chelated minor nutrients using two granular products from Lawnbox and a liquid from Simple Grow Solutions to help my lawn push through summer with as little stress as possible.

► The Easier Option ◄
For summer fertilization, just go with Yard Mastery's Stress Blend which is a 7-0-20, it's rich in Potassium and controlled release urea nitrogen.
Any locally sold fertilizer that is labeled like that will be an acceptable alternative though and those products may even be cheaper.

As always great stuff! Quick question: I’ve heard than Humic used in combination with the oxide forms of minors in many of the YM fertilizers helps to unlock those nutrients sooner and help make them plant available. Do you know if there is any truth/science to that? If accurate, if one wanted to use say, YM stress blend and then Anderson’s Humic or HumiChar, would that be a nice combo in granular form? Thanks for the input, always looking to be more informed!

ESL is what I finally found to manage my ph. In central Texas I was running 7.8ph. ESL keeps me at 6.8 if I apply 5# 3x a year. This hopefully keeps diseases at bay and allows me to reach my organic only lawn. 👍🏾
ESL? I am in Round Rock and my PH is high also.
@@frederickczajka573 Just a brand of Elemental Sulfur, but any Elemental Sulfur that pelletized and fast breakdown will work. I've also used Earth Science as well. Most recommend 5lb/1000sqft up to three times a year. I'm in Cedar Park. This is an ongoing process to manage our alkaline soil. Best of luck to you!
I comb through HomeDepot in the winter and buy stuff marked down and that is what my lawn will have to make use of. lol, yes, you get weed and feed for pennies on the dollar but when you work out the numbers, the feed part works out to be a bargain. If you read the labels you see that the underlying products are the same but with different brand names.

Question I am doing a compost tea on my lawn when I spray it in should I water it in or leave it always great info thanks again brother
My 2 cents, water it in. It becomes most viable when it can come in contact with the roots.
Ideally you should water lightly prior to adding the tea however I don’t always follow my own advise. Lately I actually apply during a light rain using my hose and Ortho dial sprayer. You should see the looks I get from the neighbors 😆
For my 2cents try a worm tea occasionally. The castings from revival gardening in Florida are amazing and their tea recipe is epic. Free shipping as well. Their products are next level .

I try to alternate the teas and have seen amazing results across the entire landscape….lawn to veggies

As soon as I saw the NPK of that YM Stress Blend I knew it contained Sul-Po-Mag aka K-Mag. The close up shot proved me correct as it showed Sulphate of Potash Magnesia on the label. Sul-Po-Mag has an NPK of 0-0-22 with 11% magnesium and 22% sulfur. The pelletized version is usually called K-Mag. It is made from a mineral called Langbeinite. I have used the stuff for veggies and medicinal plants for 15yrs. I just gave my potatoes some yesterday.
Nice to know about the sulphur since my last soil test indicated 7.4 ph.
Keep in mind not all sulfur results in acidification, you need elemental sulfur or soil sulfur which will react in the soil to acidity, most fwrts with sulfur add the nutrient but won't cause the acidification. This is a common misconception that I've wanted to address on the channel more directly. Maybe I will. Apologies if you knew that and I just misinterpreted your comment.
@@RDAmidwest Sul-Po-Mag/K-Mag/ Langbeinite does NOT lower soil PH. The magnesium buffers the sulfur. I hope this helps
@@TurfMechanic You replied 1 minute before me. You are correct that Sul-Po-Mag does NOT lower ph. I use it in veggie/medicinal gardens for that reason. Sulfur increases essential oil production, and essential oils are plants natural defense against pests. Essential oils also increase flavor of veggies, and potency of medicinal plants. Think hotter peppers, sweeter fruits, and sticky icky medicine.

It never gets old to me, we are in Klamath Falls, or north of Mt Shasta which you can see in the distance from our back yard.
I wish I watched your video sooner. I wouldn't consider myself a beginner, but always learning. I did a soil test and it revealed my nitrogen is low, my phosphorus is adequate, but on the low end, and low potassium. I did put down a half dose of SLS 16-4-8 a couple weeks ago, and then I put down milorganite last week at the normal rate. I purchased the yard mastery product you are referencing here because it was suggested as part of the soil results, and I had intentions of only using half rate with it as well, but I think I would of been better off getting something like N-ext GreeneKick 0-0-26 and apply at 1/4 rate weekly, since I already have some nitrogen down from the 16-4-8 and the milorganite. Would you agree? I have all perennial rye.
I think that's a solid plan, the small liquid feeding of K through that product should be quickly available for actual summer of July and August while the N from the SLS & Milo continue pushing into August. You'll find that as you get more and more advanced the actual products purchased becomes less important and the active ingredients and the timing of how those ingredients are used in the lawn becomes more important, then it's just a game of mix and match based on weather patterns, your own personal availability to do stuff in the lawn, and how "interesting" you want to get in your lawn care regimen. That's why I sometimes call this a hobby because you can take it as far as you want so long as you can afford to and find enjoyment in the process. :)

Have you ever tried chicken crumbles for summer lawn food for microbes, etc,?
I have and it works good for carbon. I Always make sure it does not contain antibiotics as that will mess a lawn up.

Awesome as usual. I would still like you to check out the organic line from Microlife out of Texas. They are my go to company with an incredible liquid bio stimulant as well. All their line contains microbial content.

MicroLife is best. I’ve been using it for the last 2-3 years and haven’t needed a fungicide, herbicide, or pesticide since I started.
@@YoMamaBoyfriend007 thank you for backing up my claims. Once you improve soil biology all those diseases including grubs start to disappear. I appreciate having a kindred spirit! Have you tried their liquid bio stimulant?? My fescue was green throughout the summer and I actually cut grass in December and January in the mid Atlantic.

Thanks for the video. After I go through my stock of YM fertilizers, I’m moving away from them. The sewage smell of the bio-nite is pretty sickening. Just got a new bag of YM SOP, it has bio nite in it now - not the same product as it was. Thanks for the alternatives.

@@Thelawncarenut I don’t mind at all. I even found some pieces of wood in the blend. The prill size is larger also, making the spreader rates off. How do I get pics to you?

@@Thelawncarenut Yes, correct. The YM product I’m accustomed to was a consistent, smaller orangish prill. What I received this week is blue, grey, bio nite, white and various items. Not the same consistency. I’ll touch base via the site. Thanks

Biosolids from municipalities, as in YM’s Stress Blend, are not getting good press lately. Thanks for the information as to the products you were mentioning. I might give these a try.
The only thing I see on this are random comments on UA-cam or Facebook.
Biosolids got a ding last year from a study that linked them to trace amounts of forever chemicals. I made a video about my thoughts on that last summer - other than that I don't see much bad press but I do see a number of people that just don't like biosolids. I am a fan, I feel comfortable with them, I use them. The bionite input in ym products is a welcomed addition imo but it's not a reason I'd buy them, it's just value add.
It's worth mentioning it's always a good idea do do the $$ per 1000sq math when deciding on products.... Things sound good, but when you are going to break the bank, well, not always...
To me, $65 for ANY fertilizer that covers 15000 sq. Ft. Is too expensive. I can find fertilizer on sale and other stuff for$30-35 for 15000. Natural stuff is also cheaper, which is a bonus

You are totally right, the lawnbox and simple grow solutions plan I'm doing is easily more expensive. I believe it's better but even in the video I said it was more expensive. The YM option is easier and cheaper, and there are other cheaper options too that could be even less good for the soil over the long run even though they may make the grass green for the summer. I encourage my viewers as much as I can to understand how it all works and to choose the best options for their own personal values and budget. It's different for everyone.
Natural/organic fert is usually more expensive per 1000 sqft. I think it's better and worth it but everyone has their own opinions that matter too.
I have a drastic potassium deficiency. I really need a liquid but it's so expensive. Don't want an MOP with the salts and chloride.
@rosadod I'm more confused as what about those of us with Potassium deficiencies. I would have liked to see the same ratio in a liquid product
