Your videos are very informative, but there’s so much to try to remember. I’d like to get my lawn on track but it’s a bit of a disaster and not sure where to start. I have lots of large crabgrass, clover, and cinquefoil mainly, all over since I missed pre-emergent due to an injury, and maybe they grew too large by the time I could do any work to get killed off by spraying the lawn with the Spectricide With Crabgrass Killer or something, as I applied it like 3 times over the summer within the recommended temperature (even though it said only apply once per year), in the hopes of getting rid of them. I also have lots of spots that could probably use a seeding and I want to overseed my yard, but I figure it won’t be too effective with how a lot of the weeds currently cover a lot of space, and I think I recall one of your videos saying you can’t both plant grass seed or overseed, and use weed killer or a winter preemergent, so I’m not sure what the best way to approach this to fix my lawn is. Any help or advice is appreciated, and I live in the northeast in MA, if that matters at all. Thanks

Yeah, a lot can be done for sure...of course many people just coast into winter but they aren't usually the ones with the best lawns either. Some of this stuff can be done in late August or early Sept, if temps drop enough like they did for me this year.
I just threw down some humic12 & Greene punche 18-0-1 today a month after core aerate and overseeding rpr. Core aerate caused a bunch of grassy weeds to pop up though. See what spring brings I guess.
Missed my KBG overseed window so I’m doing the nitrogen blitz and a dormant overseed after Thanksgiving or whenever soil temp hits 40. I had already aerated and dethatched on Labor Day but life got in the way😀. I realize now that “fall” means the end of August when it comes to over seeding with KBG so it survives winter. Stuff is too pricey to try it now. So glad to have to subscribed earlier this year.
One tip for fall seeding and preemergent... check out Scott's Turf Builder with Weed Preventer (built for seeding), it works great as a fall preemergent. It contains mesotrione... and knocked out 99% of my spring weeds this past year, as I applied it late in the year.
I have a new Johnathan BBU PR lawn again this year because i think the split pre emerg.harmed my new lawn. It was lush and perfect until summer. I had a bad crab grass problem before . this summer i had none from the split app i did. but the roots just did not dig in. Ph was 6.3 i just applied lime. So i guess come next summer spray and pray with tenacity when i see the crabs?
I used some bifen IT right after seeding this fall and had grubs climbing out of the dead patches and falling over dead. I originally sprayed it for the ants that were running away with seed
Another perfectly delivered, jam packed, great info video. You mentioned cut lower on fall like most others people. However, I heard B.W. from You Can Do It lawn care channel mentioned that cut his slightly higher than normal. More grass blades, more energy for the roots. That makes sense to me. What are your thoughts on this.
Hi Brian, that was a great video! I just found your channel and can't stop watching all your videos. I would love your advice on on something. I live in the northeast and laid down KBG sod in April 2020. I had a fungus problem which I took care of, but it left a lot of dead grass. I also believe there is a thick thatch problem. Can I use the Sun Joe scarifier to clean it up or is it too soon for the new sod? Also, I am overseeding the backyard that has dense shade. Do you have a recommendation for seed to use for dense shade? Thank you!
Excellent well rounded Fall tips!! It looks like we'll be above normal temps through mid October here in Wisconsin. Tempted to toss some more KBG seed down to supplement what I did a month ago along with some more Rye and Fescue. Good to know your confidence in KBG along with 2 week feedings. I like doing lower rates more often also. Keep the videos coming.
Great video and lots of good information. I live in the south east And I have grubs in my lawn. I know it’s the beginning of November but we’re having lots of warm days. Should I put down the grub killer before I winterize my lawn?
Question on fall irrigation: If the soil remains moist down to 3-4”, there’s been little rain, dew soaked mornings, daytime temps around 55-65, should I water the lawn at all, assuming it’s not getting 1”+ of weekly rain?
Very good question and I'd say that your root depth makes a difference. If you have lots of roots down in the 4 inch range and deeper then I'd probably agree that it's worth waiting longer between waterings. I'm always in favor of going as long as possible between irrigation sessions. With daytime temps that low soils will stay moist a lot longer even at the surface, when you do finally see drought stress though it's worth doing a deep watering session because it's so much better for the grass to have water deep in the soil than just a little bit of moisture at the surface.
@@TurfMechanic Thanks for the reply. We just got our first snow here in the Alaska interior, but good to know for next year. My roots overall extend about 3” into the soil, some places 2” others 4”.
Great video as always great info . I have question I hope you can answer . I just started getting in to lawn care this year. I wanted to use liquid d- thatch and liquid Aerate and humic acid but I didn’t know if I should do that now In The fall or do that all in the early spring time? Thank you
What an info-packed video, Brian. I need to apply some winter fertilizer. Should I just use a 10-10-10 or something similar? I also have a full bag of Scott's Triple Action left over from spring. Can I use that now? And I have tons of grasshoppers that are taking over. Should I spray them as well?
On those nice days in winter is it safe to do any lawn maintenance like rake or cut/edge for those people like me who like being in the yard. Are we risking anything messing around with dormant stuff?

Whats a good way to phase out old ugly KY 31 in a northern lawn overseeded with the turf fesvue/perennial rye/KY bluegrass when you can't zap it with glyphosate because you have dogs you don't want to expose to toxins?
I have dead Bermuda grassy weed patches turned brown with 2 treatments of Tenacity which also made it white. Since they are med to large patches, should I remove these patches or leave them to die off further?
I know you said that KBG is the most cold tolerant of the cool season grasses but from what I’ve read, tttf’s are mentioned as the most cold hearty. After drought conditions and very little watering over the last month, along with a hard freeze last week, the only one of the 3 types of CSG in my lawn that is still looking completely green and healthy is the widest bladed tttf’s. From what I’m seeing tttf seems to be the most drought tolerant AND cold tolerant. Wondering what your thoughts are about this.
@@wayneessar7489 Yeah, looks like it depends on the site. Some say kbg, some say fine, and some say tttf. Basically all CSG is similar in cold tolerance except for perennial rye, was just wondering what Brian thought about what I’m seeing in my yard.
When I do research on grass I do a lot of reading of university research and studies. Somewhere along the way I picked on kbg's cold hardiness - wish I would have kept my source documents but I'll probably find them again when putting my eventual kbg guide together. I haven't yet tested kbg sprouts in freezing weather like ive done for rye but id guess that your kbg just wasn't as mature as the tttf which grows deep roots very fast. Those roots are extending down into warmer sub soil since it's still Sept and the moisture down deep it can tap that shallower kbg baby root systems aren't getting to. Anyway, those are just thoughts I have and I look forward to testing some of the seeding stuff when temps here really start dropping later in the fall. We hit 35 about a week ago overnight so our frosts are going to be here very soon.

Brian, my PH is above 7. I put down Ma -gi-cal by Jonathan Green this past summer to lower PH but it is still above 7. I plan to put down Ammonia Sulfate this month, will that lower the PH or do I need Magical app again? Please advise
I'll have to look that ingredient list up but the best way to lower soil ph is application of soil sulfur otherwise known as elemental sulfur. Takes a long time to move the needle but powdered stuff will move it faster than larger pellets. Try rye grass in spring before the tree get leaves. If you are in cool season area.

You can also get it as a liquid for a better deal. It’s great at controlling bermuda as well.

If you feel the grubs are bad enough go for it and plan on preventing them next spring, that's a lot better than killing them every fall

I would imagine Klamath falls soil would be very simalar to soil in Mammoth lakes, Ca ?....

If I overseeded 20 days ago with tall fescue/kbg, am I still able to apply pre emergent late October without any impact to my new seed?
