As a fun fact, the female voice in the "Thank U Next" section is Tress MacNeille, a rather popular voice actor who has worked with Weird Al quite a bit in the past. Anyone who grew up in the 90's probably knows her as at the very least Dot in Animaniacs and Gadget in Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers, but she's done a TON of work.
The presence of yeti puppets in Shake It Off is probably a reference to the yeti puppets in his last polka medley music video, for Polka Face. *Edit: I originally conflated the medley with another*
Actually, the yetis are not from the 2014 polka. They’re from Polka Face, from his album Alpocalypse. The polka from 2014 didn’t get an official video. But there is a good fan-made one on UA-cam.
Weird Al is just a freaking genius. He has been making music for 48 years this year and even after his ten year break the man just DOES NOT MISS. I ADORE this man so so much, he has a direct line to my heart AND my sense of humour. Thank you so so much for this reaction DJ. I really love getting fun and funny songs in front of you...your joy is EVERYTHING. This may become one of my most re-watched reactions, just because the smile on your face and your laughter is absolutely FREAKING amazing. You know I adore you
- The Yeti puppets are actually reoccuring characters from another Weird Al polka medley "Polka Face" back in 2011. They were seen playing instruments alongside a puppet Weird Al at the beginning of the polka and whenever there was a polka break between songs. - David Wachtenheim & W/M Animation (Who animated the “Bad Guy” & “Shake It Off (pt. 2)” sections) was also responsible for the animations at the beginning and end of "Polka Face." - Jack D. Evans (who animated the “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” section) and KukoMitzu (who animated the "Thank U, Next" section) were also part of an unofficial animated music video released in 2020 for Weird Al's "Now THAT'S What I Call A Polka" (released in 2014). So they're two fan animators who were invited to be part of something official by Weird Al himself! - Ryan Krzak (who animated “Uptown Funk”) was also responsible for two unofficial music videos for Weird Al (which were "Albuquerque" and "Everything You Know Is Wrong") so that's THREE fan animators asked to do something official with Weird Al! - Speaking of Albuquerque, you'll see in the "Vampire" section that Weird Al comes out of a coffin from Albuquerque while also pulling out his accordion from a second, smaller coffin. The "Vampire" section, of course, was animated by none other than Vivienne Medrano (the mind behind Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss) and her SpindleHorse animation team (who are solely responsible for the animation for Helluva Boss). - And, last fun fact, the lady who keeps going "Next" in the "Thank U, Next" section is none other than Tress MacNeille, the voice of the Disney character Daisy and Dot from the Animaniacs.
To add to this, Vivian Madrano (the creator of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss) animated the "Bleed my dry like a damn vampire" section and originally wanted Al as the voice of Lucifer in her show, but he said no because of how much swearing was in it.
Agree, people sometimes forget that this man not only did rock, pop, rap, etc... but also certain songs he wrote require INSANE breath control and emotional performances. Al is an incredible singer because you NEED to be an incredible singer to even attempt to pull that shit off like he did. He's GOATed. 🐐🔥
I love Weird Al. I saw him for the first time when I was in the 6th grade. His songs are just so damn catchy that I find myself singing them over the originals 9/10 times. Love them
I've been a Weird Al fan ever since he first came out. The man is absolutely brilliant. And 27 years ago, when I was pregnant with my youngest, my husband and I took our kids to their first concert- and it was Weird Al. It makes me intensely happy that he's still going strong- and even happier to find out you're also a fan.
I've seen Weird Al live more than any other artist. My first musical instrument was the accordion back in 1988 because I wanted to play his songs! Not only is he a musical genius, but his band mates are masters of their instruments. It's easy to play well in your own style. It's harder to perfectly emulate a famous musician, to find "that sound" that makes them unique. To completely change guitar strumming techniques or drumming styles to match 20+ musicians in a single show... World Class talent! My 3rd time seeing Weird Al, I was totally focused on his guitarist, Jim "Kimo" West, and was in complete awe at how precisely he changed styles. Shout out to the band mates: Kimo West on guitar, Steve Jay on bass, and the legendary "Bermuda" Schwartz on drums. They've been with Al since the beginning, a perfect triad of immense talent that catapult Weird Al from just a parody musician to "THE" parody master. I don't want to forget Ruben Valtierra on piano too since the 1990s. These guys truly are masters, but they see the mad genius behind the curly hair and Hawaiian shirts. His original songs are amazing, his parodies are hilarious, his shows are masterpieces of costume changes. I don't know how this man has so much energy after a long touring run, but he brings it all for his audience. Best of all, people I know who got to meet Weird Al "in the wild" or even work with him in the studio say he's a super sweet guy. Many musical masters become jerks with fame. My college band director used to play with Frank Sinatra, and he was ruthless against his musicians. If you missed a single note in rehearsal, you were OUT. Weird Al was the sort where, if you were 5 minutes late to the studio because your kid threw up that morning, he would come over to your house with homemade vegan cookies. All around a good human. We are blessed to live in the Era of Weird Al.
Viv storyboarded it, another at Spindlehorse did the animation. Weird Al asked her/her studio to animate it. Apparently, lucifer was written with al in mind, as she wanted him to voice lucifer.
That in my opinion is the best made music video of the last 10 y. The attention to detail and the styles are unmatched. And what that guy did to the Lil Nas song is nothing short of genious...I would pay money for every single "parody" he did as a full song..its insane
I can't say 70s but I can say 1980 when I first heard The Dr. Demento Show....where of course, I was introduced to Weird Al and then attended the first major tour which came to Seattle......own every album ...attended every local concert....including just buying a ticket for his coming concert in 2025!! (White River Amphitheatre near Seattle.) I am the same as the presenter....Weird Al hits my funny bone exactly right!!
You mentioned that Al always ends his polka medleys in a similar way. It's actually called the "Ear Booker Polka". Besides being catchy and providing some continuity, it also works from an accounting standpoint... each songwriter in the polka medley is paid based on the % of the medley where their song is heard. Since the Ear Booker Polka isn't attributable to another songwriter, Al gets the credit (and the royalties!)
Less than half of the songs on Weird AL's 14 studio albums are parodies. AL is an incredible songwriter and 80% of his songs are amazing originals. He writes songs for movies, tv and commercials.
The biggest thing I appreciate about him is when he does animated stuff he credits the artists the one for vampire is the person who does hazben hotel and helluva boss
It's so nice to find such a young lad to be such an ardent fan of Al's! That was me in the 70s. I would LOVE to have seen him live! I'm pea green with envy!
The one with the ice cream cones on their heads is a parody of Devo (avant garde New Wave Group) called Dare to be Stupid (the lead track from Al's 3rd album of the same name.) It was so well done that Mark Mothersbaugh, the leader of Devo said got mad, not because he hated it, but because Al had created a song that was, as good as, if not better than they had done. Btw, Dare to be Stupid is majorly connected to the Transformers, who not only used it in the movies but in tv shows. You should watch it if you get a chance.
16:25 most of the stuff in the video is decided by the animators, in this case it’s a call back to the polka face videos intro which I’m pretty sure was animated by the same person and also used those yeti puppets
Actually he does about 3-4 things depending on how you count. 1. Originals. Yes, almost half of his discography are actual originals that may (2.) pastiche certain artists, songs, or genres. 3. Direct Parodys. Songs directly based off of other songs in rhythm, lyric structure, etc. 4. Polka Parodys. Compilations of pop somgs of a certain genre or era of music. Very much musical time capsules of music played around the time the album was released.
WORD CRIMES! I love Weird Al just in general but that one made him the patron saint of English majors worldwide! That might be my favorite of all his songs. Except Polkamania. And Eat it. And On Ebay. And... Yeah, can't pick just one. Never been able to, likely never will. Thanks for sharing your love of Al with us. It's so heartening to see new generations discovering the weirdness and loving it.
I love Weird Al's polka medleys. Ive been watching all the people reacting to this. I really enjoyed hearing a fan catching all the easter eggs. But the people who dont know who Weird Al is are priceless. This was fun 😊
The woman going next was tress MacNeille better known as the female Mel blanc. She was Lucy in the song Ricky. She was in pretty fly for a rabbi and was in jerry springer
Not only is he a great singer, but his band is amazingly versatile. His band has four other people in it, three of whom have worked with Al since the _eighties_ and the last one taking over for someone else in '91. The sheer number of genres and music they've had to play for the parodies boggles the mind.
One of only 3 people (Him, Madonna and Michael Jackson) to have a top 40 hot in the 80s, 90s, 2000s and 2010s! If he releases a song in the 2020s that hits top 40 I think he would be the only person ever...
@@dj_410 I agree!! I love Weird Al for what he brings to the table. His sense of humor is just way too good for one video. And speaking of Jackson, I hope Weird Al does a polka cover of “thriller”
I would definitely agree , Weird Al is one of a king . Actually in many ways the FIRST of a kind. I have been following him since day one when well known syndicated show out of Boston called Dr Dimento was dazzled by his style , and aired what was to become his first hit "my Bologna" (A spoof on the song My Sharona by the Knack.) He had a few other small self produced ditties that got aired too , but that was truly the beginning of his career. As you said. Kurt Cobain said it was a sign he had really made it , when Weird Al spoofed "feels like Teen Spirit".
That makes sense - I think it's also a callback to his Polka Face parody that had Yetis in it. Btw, you know that there's going to be a ton of printouts of Travis in that tutu in the KC Chiefs locker room - they are just gonna troll him to no end.
I'm pretty surre the animators largely made the decisions or what appeared in their segments, except when it was attached to a transition (and probably the ending). I mean the gross one about bodies was clearly by Bill Plympton and he's infamously been doing stuff like that for about the past 50 years.
Party in the CIA would have everyone wearing black suits. The yellow ones are Dare to be Stupid. It's actually very good that the Despacito lyrics are in Spanish. If they were in English, there would be a lot of drama about them.
7:39 The song being referenced there is “Dare To Be Stupid”, a type of parody called a Pastiche where he trying to create a song like a band/artist would, in this case Devo.
Weird Al is so freaking funny!!! Not sure if you've heard his parody ""White & Nerdy" but you won't be able to stop laughing to it. But there's one out that's a prequel to "White & Nerdy" where Donny Osmond is sort of dancing behind him and it's insane! Donny had no idea what to do so he just did an entire song in adlib moves. I wish when the actual video came out more of Donny's part in it. Give it a shot! Think you'll love it
I love that Weird Al never uses curse words in his songs and found a very clever way to incorporate WAP. Also because I've heard this parady so much whenever I'm at work and I help a customer I always want to say Thank you..next.
I'm somewhat disappointed that he didn't make a reference to his "Gotta Boogie" song at the end of the "Shake it Off" section, but I can understand why.
7:38 is Dare to be Stupid which I'm not sure if it was a parody or one of his originals. Weird Al is known for his parodies of course but has some good original songs
Have you ever watched or heard of the show Galavant? It was a musical show, sadly didn't last long, but Weird Al was a group of singing monks. Highly hilarious. Start with listening to If I Were A Jolly Blacksmith please
I've been a fan of Al's since nearly the beginning and yes, he can sing now. But the joke in a lot of his early stuff is he wasn't that great... And no, the ice cream on the head is from "Dare to Be Stupid." Also, Al didn't animate the video. There's a huge list of animators he collaborated with. Also also, check out the fine print with the WAP animation, ti's funny.
I had a chance to see him twice back in the day, once in the late 80s and once in the late 90s at a bar that head about 2-300 people, he put on a complete show he had over 6 costume changes during the show it was amazing. I'm old school Al I remember buying his first cassette. I had all four of his first albums(tapes). When you look at his "origin story" it is really wild, Valevictorian of his high school at 16 then on to a prestigest architecture college that I think he aced in three years a long with writing his songs and recording them in the bathroom and sending them to Dr. Dimento show where he was a star.
13:30 - Now we know what Eectric Callby meant with "lipstick on my feet" in Tekkno Train... And I am not confused about a possible connection between Weird Al and Electric Callboy- not in the slightest 😂
Parodies & polka songs aren't all he does. He has a sh@t ton of originals. "I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead, Mr. Frump In The Iron Lung, One More Minute, The Check's In The Mail, Nature Trail to Hell" just to name a few. Check them out. You won't be disappointed!!!!!!!

It's, and I am using the proper writing style, "DARE TO BE STUPID."
Thanks DJ 😊
The main costume designer of this video is Adrian Bliss
the yetis are probably a reference to the mv for polka face
15:42 'Maxime Infectum Cattus' Is latin for 'a particularly wet cat' according to google translate.
7:38 is Dare to be Stupid which I'm not sure if it was a parody or one of his originals. Weird Al is known for his parodies of course but has some good original songs
It was a parody of Devo's style of songs rather than one song in perticular.
It's an original song, it was actually used in the 1986 animated Transformers movie.

A f**king OBOE!??!!! THAT IS A EUPHONIUM, IF NOT A TUBA
Haha sorry I'm awful woth instruments
Have you ever watched or heard of the show Galavant? It was a musical show, sadly didn't last long, but Weird Al was a group of singing monks. Highly hilarious. Start with listening to If I Were A Jolly Blacksmith please
I've been a fan of Al's since nearly the beginning and yes, he can sing now. But the joke in a lot of his early stuff is he wasn't that great...
And no, the ice cream on the head is from "Dare to Be Stupid."
Also, Al didn't animate the video.
1:11 - I've heard all of Al's old stuff.
1:25 - Al does two things: parodies and polka medleys.
One of these statements makes a lie out of the other.
People are so surprised he can sing so well in Spanish but HE SANG IN FRENCH YEARS AGO! He sings French in Genius in France
Think we'll see an 80 year old Weird Al I'd hope so before he hits the points
From Google translate:
maxime infectum cattus = a particularly wet cat
Haha thats brilliant
13:30 - Now we know what Eectric Callby meant with "lipstick on my feet" in Tekkno Train... And I am not confused about a possible connection between Weird Al and Electric Callboy- not in the slightest 😂
Parodies & polka songs aren't all he does. He has a sh@t ton of originals. "I'll Be Mellow When I'm Dead, Mr. Frump In The Iron Lung, One More Minute, The Check's In The Mail, Nature Trail to Hell" just to name a few. Check them out. You won't be disappointed!!!!!!!
The vampire part was animated by hazbin hotel/helluva boss creator Vivziepop. I lost my shit when i learned that
There's npbofy like Weird Al.
“I need a new Al album.”
I think that’s the first time I’ve seen you stutter.
13:38 is a reference to a fan animation of weird al's song Albuquerque

Have you listened to his polka version of Hamilton? Lin-Manuel loved it.

15:01 "Batteries not included because, let's face it, you don't need them for a mop and bucket."
OFFER NOT VALID IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE NOR OUTSIDE THE STATE OF DELAWARE
I’ll watch any more weird al reactions (old clips are fine!) best musician apart from Tim Minchin
