- In this video I'll be restoring an old dead hammer.
Bug fixes, vices, protective hands, hardening and more in this video
• How to make the hammer... Make NEW hammer - • How to make a mini ham...
This is not a guide to action.
I'm not a pro, I just need another new shiny hammer.
Just enjoy watching the video - this is my vision.
I can also recommend a video with the restoration of a broken folding knife
• Restoring an old broke...
Thanks for watching!
Thank you all for your worries about the vise. The vise is ready and will continue to use them. ua-cam.com/video/SCfOkcYUOUM/v-deo.html

Yes also make yourself a proper two pro he’s spanner to tighten the blade on the angel grinder. Your method by hand is not secure.

Thank God! You were giving me heart attack! Good video by the way.

Hand tool safety at it's best. I was waiting for the fingers to be removed at any moment.
Take precautions to protect yourself when using angle grinders. Leather gloves goggles, face shield, respirator and protective clothing. He should’ve re forged the hammer to shape anyway.
Este tío es un peligro para si mismo 🥴
personally i dont use gloves with any thing that spins cause i know of ppl who have lost fingers when the glove gets snagged.
Was gonna say any form of clothing/hair getting close to a spinning object is a bad idea but the two other guys got to it before me, but youright about eye, ear, and inhalation protection.
These are my exact sentiments.
Never wear gloves when using a grinder
I have been using grinders all my life and never got hurt until one day I wasn’t paying enough attention and a little 5” grinder grabbed and bit me. I put a cutting disc through my left inner arm just above my wrist in literally less than the blink of an eye. When I looked at the damage I could see some white threads that moved when I tried to wiggle my fingers, yep tendons, more troubling is that some of my fingers wouldn’t move.
Thankfully an excellent surgeon got all my fingers working again and twelve months of specialist therapy and physio got everything working perfectly again. The only evidence is an awesome scar right across my wrist that reminds me to always pay attention and don’t take unnecessary risks. Watching you cutting was hard to watch because I know how fast a grinder can move when a disc grabs and your fingers had no hope. Glad you didn’t get hurt but please take warning from someone that was. Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
Thank you for your worry and for the terrible story. I worked with great care. The plane of cut and expansion of the disk never coincided with the limbs. The video is a little accelerated, so it gets scary.
Apentogo. Hi, I’ll do my best to explain. I was cutting some 25mm square tubing with a 1mm cutoff wheel and I had the work resting across two saw horses with the end of the work I was cutting resting over the edge of the second sawhorse. Pretty normal and safe. I had a few cuts like this so was holding the steel with my left hand while I used the grinder with my right and my arms were about 400mm apart. I had finished the cut and thought I’ll just take off the little burr left on the bottom of the cut so I tilted the grinder over to the right and just touched it to the underside of the work. I still don’t know what happened because it was so fast but the next thing I knew the grinder shot across from left to right and the first thing it came to was my left forearm.
My mistakes were: not clamping the piece which forced me to use the grinder with one hand. Not wearing welding gauntlets with the long cuffs which probably would have stopped the disc or at least reduced the injuries. I didn’t have the guard fitted but as I didn’t see the grinder hit my arm I don’t know if that made a difference. Using a cutting disc for grinding. Cutting discs are not for grinding as they flex to much and that can cause them to shatter but by far my biggest mistake was complacency. Since then I have purchased a new Metabo grinder with about the best safety features available eg: dead mans trigger, it has a brake that stops the blade within 2 seconds of letting the trigger go so the bloody thing doesn’t spin for ages when you want to put it down. It has a jam lock so that if the wheel gets caught the grinder instantly shuts off reducing the chance of the wheel shattering or the grinder getting pulled out of your hands. It has a guard fitted that is really easy to adjust so your not tempted to remove it.
Believe me a cutting wheel will remove fingers unbelievably quickly. That disc is spinning at around 10,000 rpm and with a lot of power. If it will grind its way through hardened steel your fingers are going to be no problem especially if it has grabbed and now has a lot of force behind it. Want to see? Get a piece of raw bone touch the grinder to it.
I hope this all makes sense. Take care and please don’t be complacent.
Cheers Stuart 🇦🇺
Apentogo. Your welcome. I had the same opinion that it was safe to BUT it was that opinion and complacency that caused my accident. As I said the disc didn’t break but just grabbed somehow but it was so fast I’ll never know.
@@scroungasworkshop4663 I was thinning the edge on a splitting maul where I worked at a granite quarry with a 6 inch Milwaukee grinder. The maul was in a vise and I was thinking how easy someone could get hurt with it. Squeeze switch and no guards. The following week a guy cut a finger off changing wheels just like the guy in the video did. His leg caught the switch and the plug was still in. ZIP went the finger. I leave my guard in place and never trust a cutoff disc. I'll score something with the grinding wheel and then beat it apart with a hammer. And I would've just scored the rolled up places and reground the face and not shortened the hammer head, but that's just me. Glad you're o.k. Stuart! Cheers!
Lewie McNeely. Thanks Lewie.
for your next restoration... restore an old VICE and then for-the-love-of-God USE the damn thing !
Omg. He's definitely a rookie using that angle grinder. The disregard for saftey. 1 day he will be bit!
@@thundersforge8867 at least he is using the guard on the grinder
Scissors work better.
He will figure it out after having a cutoff disc explode while holding the work with his bare hands. At least he kept the guard on though. A vise would be a lot safer.
Thunders Forge ROOKIE is the right word!!!!!
I know you are super professional but protect your nice and valuable hands.😊
Anyone else keep watching to see if he loses the finger lol
No brain, no pain..
Why use a vice to hold your work
Don't need 5 fingers anyway
Pretty much the only reason I watched.
God bless those fingers for one day they will perish
Surprised he even used a guard.
It's an absolute miracle you are still in once piece. Like you say, You are not a Pro. Neither am I but I know you need to clamp your work and control the tool - especially a 2500rpm angle grinder with a cutting blade.
12500rpm
Anyway,as you say it´s a miracle.
Well, it's shiny now... and sharp (?)
What I'm wondering most is: How did the hammer faces end up like that? What was it's history? What on earth was it being used for? If it was used as a Smithy's hammer, which I think it was, it wouldn't have gotten that badly damaged without being reforged and heat treated. Which is probably how it should have been repaired too. All that removed metal could have been moved back to where it should have been. I'm also sure while one end is flat, with rounded edges, the other should have been domed a little to move metal quicker.
This is the first video of yours that I've watched. So guessing at this point in time your range of tools is small. I'll check out your channel and see if I like your other content, and if your repair techniques have improved. Thanks for the upload, it's always interesting to see how different people do things.
I hope other videos will please you more. Cutting paper is a joke. ;)
@@OldRusty All good, it was funny. I'm pretty easy to please and everyone works at their own skill level. Even I'm still learning on topics that I like but have little experience with. I doubt you'd be interested in the lawn-care/mower or survival videos I watch, lol. Life is all about learning.
If only we could all afford to buy all the tools we needed or wanted...
There's nothing like having the right tool for the job and knowing how to use it.
I watch some guys that are far below your standards, so, you're doing pretty well. Your video production/editing it pretty high, I like that. Best of luck on YT, Rusty, it's a crazy world at the moment. Far too crazy for me.
I've checked your channel owl3764 and you don't have any videos. So why on Earth would Old Rusty care about what owl3764 thinks?
Came here to watch a hammer being restored (and not a educational on how to propper use tools) and was not disapointed! Good stuff.
Loved the end test ! People often forget how important it is to have a good sharp edge on your hammer ! Good video mate 👍
Well yeah, people often forget things they don't need. 😂
@@jzrgrmm Why wouldn’t you need a sharp edge on your hammer?, what’s the reason to have it or to not have it?
@@aaronrodgers5852 My guess would be it’s for banging, not cutting. There are other tools for cutting that are probably much more efficient. I’d be interested to hear what a sharp hammer is for, especially since once you get to using it for its primary purpose it’s not going to stay very sharp.
The demo at the end showing that your hammer can finally... cut a paper is really hilarious 😂
I just got shocked 🤣🤣
yeah, it was really the cherry on the cake after all that extra dangerous grinding with no concern for safety. unreal
For some reason, the restoration of this hammer reminded me of when I got my toenails cut during pedicure after first COVID quarantine lockdown.
I hope that, like me, they didn't use a vise. LOL
I hate to bust someone's chops on U-Tube but your gonna hurt yourself without being able to hold a workpiece. Possibly restoring an old vise to use on projects that require it should be a priority over the hammer.
I hate to bust someone's chops on UA-cam, but the word is "you're".

За конец, с разрезанием бумаги, отдельное спасибо! Прикольно))) привет из России! Лайк!
Brilliant work! I love that I'm sharing this planet with a dude that will spend 47 man hours restoring an $8 hammer! Great work!
I had to force myself to watch the video all the way through just to see what he would wind up with. Total wahnsinn (madness); to put all that time and afford into a useless piece of unhardened metal! Should never have been used for a hammer in the first place. But he succeeded in winding up with another useless but shiny piece of metal! Still unhardened I would like to add.
13:56 wait, did he just test a hammer by cutting paper 🤷🏻♂️
You went through $40 in cutting and grinding blades to end up with a $20 hammer...

The ending sold me the whole video. Nothing says "hammer" more than slicing paper whit It. Except maybe, shaving your forearms.

the paper cutting at the end ! lol Glorious :) thank you !
It's a shame that not everyone understood this joke. :)
So am I the only one that gets the joke about cutting paper at the end of the video
no you aren't 😂
Most probably you are …
It would appear that having a sharp edge on a tool not intended for cutting is a 'good idea'. This would appear to be someone who wants a 'shiny' and a 'sharp' not an actual hammer.
I think maybe the paper cutting was faked. Just attach a sharp blade where the camera can't see.
Rock, paper, scissors. In this scenario, the hammer beats paper. Not sure if that's correct, just a guess.
Hands in a constant state of peril! Subscribed
Jeezus.
It's like watching a safety training video back in the day... This is "what not to do" guy.
He literally used a glove as a hot pad, not a glove... 🤪
Should we set up a GoFundMe for new cutoff discs and for Christ's sake, a legitimate vise?!
I wonder if he had glasses on lol
yes , grinding the hammerhead holding it in bare hand....brrr, very dangerrous....
I say screw the haters you got 777k views my boy! They hate us cuz they ain’t us!
Thanks. I don’t understand why this video is watched, although I think that the other videos turned out to be much better.
It is a soft hammer, meant to be used to strike hardened tools without risking splinters of tempered steel spraying around.
Even Mjolnir doesn't have a blade. Nice work right here.
Cutting paper with a club hammer sure disproves that old saying "If a hammer is the only tool you have you see every problem as a nail..." :-)
Excellent job! You’re good with an angle grinder. Tricky machines!
Hi:
A historical hammer is turned into a hammer of which there are thousands and possibly the author will not have checked if he had any manufacturing mark.
I remind you of four cases cases:
1- By 1984 an archaeologist found in operation, in a farmhouse in my town, a Roman hammer of the year 300 or so, that is now 1,700 years old. Seniority was determined by the brands of the owner. In 1,700 years, the handle was evidently changed several times.
2 and 3- I have two axes, one of them was given to me by the widow of a deceased friend. Neither the oldest in the town remembered the blacksmith masters whose seal was stamped, nor had they heard them mention their parents and grandparents.
4 - I bought an antique dealer from my Barcelona (Spain, Europe) I bought a double-edged knife with the cylindrical wooden handle towards 1987 and it keeps it in the form of two S-plates, obviously at 90º with respect to the edges.
I took it to sharpen a Galician, who returned me a polished dagger as taken from the factory: I was stupid for not telling him to just sharpen the edges and leave the rest in his primitive state.
Before loading a veteran tool, it is better to clean it and leave it as it is, as in the case of my puya, which we already discussed in the forum. Brushing with a steel barbed brush to remove rust, and then WD 40 and in this case, neither sharp nor anything.
Bests Regards.
amr1919ms this hammer was however ruined, both faces were beaten into deformity... he however ruined it a little more by reshaping the faces with a angle grinder, messing up the temper
Cutting that paper at the end was gold
This is a perfect example of "safety first" ( he haven't idea)
And you need a vise in a table
This gentleman needs to watch some New Yankee Workshop episodes.
Dude restores hammer and demonstrates its cutting skills!
I've subscribed but only to see if you can keep all your fingers in future videos !..
If I see him working with this Mashine towards his Fingers I get Goosebumps....
I picked up several very old hammers W/O handles at a museum on rural life and farming (was featured on American Pickers). A large majority of the "good" stuff was bought up quickly, especially the blacksmithing items. Anyway, the hammers were in very much the same condition as the one you have. I dressed them and they look great. I'm sure the 3 lbs. hammer weighs more like a 2 1/2 lbs. hammer.
The paper cutting at the end lol , yeah everyone does it to show sharpness 😂
Wow. I hope your surgeon is good at restoration too. YIKES!
LOL, He's just a genius ;)
Wow!!! I have to do this test and see if my hammers are " sharp" enough . . . . lol
Жирный лайк! шикарно получилось,спасибо за видео!
I don't understand edges sharp enough to cut paper. That's a good way to cut your self very badly .
It's a gag. he had some kind of a blade stuck on the side. did you notice how careful he was to never reveal the other side?
I believe it was done as a joke, to show how bad ass it is.
There is no surface on the piece that would cut anything,
Its a common test to see if a knife is sharp or not, often performed in knife restauration or sharpening videos
This is a joke about thst test
14 minute video with 7 minutes of a grinder... that was enough for me.
This is definitely an interesting one. I'm just horrified at how you have no gloves on. Then I noticed the shoe situation. Please operate your tools with care and your own safety in mind!
Yep, this boy won't end life with all his fingers
I see a lot of comments about people saying how dangerous an unprofessional this guy did this. First of all, he did what he did with what he had. And overcame and made a beautiful tool. Good job mate. Good job.
If he has a grinder, he can get safety equipment, fact.
There is NO excuse for improper safety gear. It is all affordable.
Very nice. Many people are watching your videos and will learn something from you. Please wear protective equipment an work in much safer way.
Damn I was waiting for him to temper it by hand too. LMFAO
Would have been safer than his grinding stile. 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
New years ☺My grandfather left me an American-made ax. and I'm keeping it as a very valuable keepsake. I once heard him say that white ash is an optimal choice for the handle of an ax. my grandpa is gone...i always keep it and will restore it someday. thanks for the good video, your tutorial
Video should be labeled “hammer makeover” or something like that. If it were an actual restoration you would have heated it in a forge and reshaped it with a hammer and anvil.
Exactly.
That’s what I was thinking. Cool either way but not a restoration.
A nice shiny hammer? Time to use it!
Nah it's not restoring. Wrong title. The hammer weights less so it was salvaged!!!
Restoring would be reforging the thing, **hammering** it back into shape.
That is one crazy hammer ! Multi purpose. After driving spikes all day I can go home and shave with it. Very cool!!
Instead of wearing the glove - just use it to hold your work. 😂😂😂 Instant classic!
Liked the inclusion of the old drill in the beginning, nice touch👍. Great restoration!!
Great restoration but a word of advice -- buy a vise !! Im surprised you still have all your fingers
It's good to see people want restore old to newish, the way your going about doing this is reckless, using PPE is a must, it doesn't take much to seriously injure yourself. Do good things, Do it the safe way, your an influencer, be a good Influncer. Good luck hope you stay in one piece. 🙏🖖
THX
However, Props to you on making the sharpest hammer I've ever seen.
The first thing I thought was man this dude must really hate his fingers ! I was truly expecting to see some fingers flying across the room. Glad the fingers are still in their places. That was nerve racking.
The best ending ever!!!
Someone please buy this man a vice for the love of God
I think restoring the hammer would have meant heating her in a forge and reshaping her. This way she retains her proper weight and shape, to the best of your ability. This perhaps, should be labeled, vintage hammer makeover. As far as safety, I suppose this is a personal decision isn’t it.
I take it he's not a blacksmith. This video would have been more satisfying. Watching him use grinder was painful in many ways. Loss of metal, almost loss of fingers.
You made beautiful scissors👌👍💟😁

New Title should read, Turning a beat up old hammer into a hammer my child can now use.. It's considerably smaller, lighter and more manageable so a child can now use it. Bravo!
Well that was pretty cool! The extra bevels on the corners were a nice touch too. Razor sharp ay? Love it.
Great restoration, you dropped the ball with the steel wedge, wood wedge goes there and the the steel at a 45 to the wood wedge. Great job
Fitting the cutting blades upside down, thats the least of mistakes you made! Lucky to still have all your fingers!
You are not safety minded at all. It's a shame that safety isn't apart of your life.
Not to mention not using the spanner to secure the blade.

Should have put that hammer up on a shelf. It is a testement of someone using the hell out of it for a long long time.
If restore worker was a blacksmith, he reshape the protruding parts by forging and minimize grinding so that red rust does not occur.
It's shiney, but it now has no soul.
Ditto~!!
It turned out fine but there were a few things left to do just to make it more presentable. What if something important to highlight is the crack that was in the middle of the hammer, applying Applying a small weld then sandpaper prevents the crack from continuing to grow due to the use of the hammer and honestly it looks much better. Anyway good job.
Video of how the grinder should not be used .
I usually find these restoration videos to be therapeutic, but the angle grinder next to your hands, like it was, made me feel uneasy watching it. Take good care of yourself bro'
Havnt you sawn off a lot of the meat of the hammer?
