After 2 years with mine, I changed the cassette, chain, bar, pedals, saddle, tires, wheels, cables, bar tape. Oh and had to replace the fork under warranty. Almost a new bike still loving it 🥰
An overhaul focused on your riding needs will always beat a new ride built with components that meet the marketing idea of the day the factory built it. Gives you the full knowledge of the readiness state for the ride to boot. Digging into the weeds and doing it yourself is just plain fun.
I swapped out my 'meh'/discontinued Box 1 11 spd group-set for a wider-range and better shifting MicroShift Advent X groupset and Selle Atómica X leather saddle. Now, my keister is happier; i have all the gears i need and far wider gear range; a 48t bailout gear (vs. the old 46t); and the combination of the upgrades has been an one-hundred percent improvement overall. The Advent X groupset is the rare combination of quality and affordability (and a middle finger to Spendy SRAM/Shimano...). Now, i just need to get a decent/affordable two-man tent and bear-bag and my setup will be nigh perfect..!
Another outstanding vid. Makes me want to hit the trails every time. My particular kudos for giving a shoutout to the Continental Race Kings - #simplythebest !
I love this. I still have my 2018 Salsa Fargo in Forest Service Green. She's carried me many, many miles including recently down the Baja Divide. I would love to spruce her up like this. I would also love to add some aero bars and update my drivetrain. Still love my 2x setup for the loaded climbing I do. Every time I think about a new bike, I ride my old bike and all in love all over again but she could definitely use a spa day. Enjoy your videos. Thanks for the inspiration.
Comprehensive overhaul, very nice. The other thing that reinvigorates my stoke for my bike (Salsa Fargo Ti) is switching up it's configuration. I go from fully rigid, to dropper/suspension fork, to flat bar to drop bar, 1x11, to single speed via Gates belt drive, 2.2 Race Kings to 2.6 Mezcals, etc. etc. Whenever the ride gets a little predictable or stale I switch up it's configuration and the bike seems like a new one again. The trails feel new too because the approach to them changes depending on the configuration. It doesn't do one thing perfect but it does do everything 'well'. It's kept me from buying who knows how many new bikes.
Great little batch of value bang for buck upgrades. Hot tip for your next refresh. Ditch the SRAM OEM pads - some of the most mediocre brake pads on the market. MTX Gold, Galfer Purple or Green, Sinter Green all perform significantly better (especially with the 11sp version of SRAM HRD where the pistons are 2x18mm vs. say 12sp AXS calipers which are 2x21mm pistons = almost 20% more power off the bat).
I am glad that I found your channel. You are helping me to lock in my decision to buy a Cutthroat. I am looking for a gravel bike for events and for bike packing. This just might be the one. Now to decide which level of build…. Thank you for making and keep them coming!
I always enjoy your video. Nothing like good maintenance and over haul gets you psyched for the season. I love that you just didn't buy a new complete bike. I feel there's always so much marketing hypes that may not worth spending money for what you get, or give you much perceivable difference at all. I think you are very smart for spending minimal money to upgrade where it's necessary. Enjoy the beauty.
on my 2019 cutthroat I put on an Absolute Black 36 elliptical, kept the 11/42 cassette and swapped the Rival derailleur to a Force 1. I would like a little more top end, but the granny is good for the riding I do in the catskills. This bike is my favorite bike of all time,
Thanks for the video on improving the cutthroat I’ll watch your tour divide video again on bike components Going to update to larger cassette and derailleur
First video of yours I’ve come across. There’s a used cutty for sale near me and watching this has me so tempted to go buy it. Subscribed now for more Bikepacking content.
Thanks! I'd really like a versatile bike like the Cutthroat, but I really like front suspension and a flat or alt-bar setup. I like the Timberjack but it's just too heavy for what it is. I put a narrower set of carbon hoops on my full sus and also run the Race Kings for road and gravel... love them!
I have same generation cutthroat with original Apex group and swapped cassette for e-13 9-46 11 spd and 34t chainring for a 20-110 gear inch range. Another option for someone looking to modify drivetrain. Unfortunately I haven’t taken it on any epic GDMBR like trips. Just a handful of overnights.
Love your energy and content, as always. I’m planning to pick up a Poseidon Redwood this summer. I think of it as a junior varsity cutthroat 🤓. Ride on!
Love it do to cost I went microshift only 10 speed but has worked out so well on my bike packing rig that I am thinking about selling gear and buying another microshift
Have you every put narrow tires on the cutthroat for more speed on roads/gravel? Curious if it could do double duty as my adventure bike, and a fast-ish gravel bike.
Need your help???!! I have a 21 salsa cutthroat apex 1. Love bike except it is so slow compared to my road bike.i put some rene herse Hurricane Ridge extralight tires on and that helped some. Wondering if the stock wtb wheels are holding me back? How much of a difference would new wheels make? Thanks, love your videos!
Yeah, those wheels are pretty heavy… yes, upgrading would make a notable difference, and if not tubeless already - that will help too :) if you a have a nice road bike, it’ll never be as fast as that… but should still be quick and comfy! Ride on :)
I did have them tubeless, but the tire kept blowing off rim, so they have tubes now. Can you recommend any budget ideas for upgraded wheels? Thanks again!
Hey, how did you get the ratio to work with a GX derailleur? On my cutty the rear drop out is too close to the port. So it says you have to use the rear exit and the GX doesn’t work with that.
Hi Jesse, sorry this slipped through the cracks and I'm just seeing it now... mine works perfectly with the GX eagle derailleur... no issues... if you wanna shoot me an email, I'll send you some pics: dirtyteethmtb at gmail dot com

Thanks for doing a video on the upgrades. Particularly the larger cassette conversion. It’s the first one I’ve seen for the Cutty and the Ratio kit.
