I learned a great tip from your video. I didn't know on the DT Swiss 350 hubs that the cassette could be removed by hand. That is huge for a bike adventurer.
Picked up a Fargo today can't wait for it to arrive and get dialed in. Loved this video and the fact that you fit in some good lifehack/tips. Much love!
Well that is absolute Gold!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to do the “show and tell”. That will be so useful to my wife and I going forward. Howard & Bec
Love my 2018 Fargo. I've thought about "replacing" it with something newer but I can't let it go. There is no bike out there as versatile, Maybe the Ritchey Ascent. I've ridden over 6000 kilometers on mine and just completed the Baja Divide. Love it.
Lots of good ideas here. Thank you. I love all your bikepacking videos. From my learning, on my own bikepacking setup, I think your advice on where to pack different items is the best part of your videos. I have a second bottle cage on the non-drive-side of my rear stays, and your comment in the video about it making it harder when you lay the bike down really rings true to me. I may even remove mine.
Thanks Henry - really informative and some great ideas. The spokes stored in the seat tube is genius! Been thinking about buying a Fargo so this was very helpful.
This is such a good looking and thoughtful build. I really appreciate the experience informed packing decisions, such as implimenting multiple dry bags and a harness-based packing system(s), as well as the long-distance comfort-based decisions like the unique handlebar and the 2.6 tires. I am a mountain biker wondering about getting into bikepacking, so i also apprreciate you recommending a couple specific products.
I've really enjoyed the comfort and simplicity of my Fargo w 4 panniers on the road. When I've ventured to include bumpy jeep roads, the changes needed are obvious. Thank you for excellent info on set up,including large frame bag . Happy trails to you !😊
Macht weiter so!! LG
Henry, thank you, this was so well done like all your videos. I found the bags part very helpful as my partner and I plan our bag setup. Agree with you about the convenience of the harness approach. Would you consider doing a short video about what you pack in each bag? I think viewers would really appreciate it.
Thanks, glad I could help :) I don't know if it would help a lot because the items are still to this day not settled and shifted around.. also Moni and I share lots of the gear, which makes things more tricky.
Man, I just found this video and it's exactly what I was looking for, didn't even know it! I'm thinking of getting the titanium version, what do you think?
Hi! Very good review and tips, i appreciaete! One guestion, i am 181,5cm and 87cm inseam and struggling which size is better for me, M or L. Do you have some ideas Henri?
@@jesperskovgaard8048 Jones bar is much closer reach than the original dropbar, so larger size is better combo if you go to Jones bar i think. Also you could always change stem
This is a great and very useful video, thank you! The gearlist mentioned at the end seems to have gone? I'd love to see that, if not. Thanks for the effort of doing such a valuable video!
I just picked up a Breezer Thunder a couple months ago. Checks off most of the similar attributes that this Salsa Fargo has. Couldn't pass up the deal as the whole bike was cheaper than a Fargo frame. For now i'll just accumulate gear and enjoy the adventures. I like the idea of a small bungee to secure the top of the water bottle.
Thank you for the very helpful detail regarding your bag selection and details! Very well done. I love my Fargo. I run the Rholoff and Magura four piston hydraulic brakes with the same tires you mentioned, stellar go everywhere, do everything set up!
Hi! Super fan of all your videos! Stunning adventures and incredibles images! After this video, I've rested with one doubt: which is the model of the tent that you used (and use) during your trips? Thank you very much for all your videos. Happy adventures!
You have made a good choice. I have a Salsa Fargo from 2011. Quick release wheels and no frame link for fitting a drive belt. I transferred parts from a 2008 MTB onto the Fargo frame. My frame has the same advantages you speak of. Ability to run wide tyres gives a real go-anywhere capability. Things that are different: 3x9 drivetrain gives bigger range and faster downshifting. And the front derailleur is one of few parts never replaced. Hydraulic disk brakes are the way to go. Better performance, extremely reliable and low maintenance. And in extremis you have two of them and they are easy to replace. (Compare that with a gearbox). Flat bars are better for control and simplicity. Schrader valves are more robust and simpler that presta.
Did I miss the frame size? I’m looking at the Fargo and I’m 180cm and Salsa says medium for me. I had a 2017 model and it was a large and seemed to fit ok, but now that I am researching more I feel medium might be best. Thanks, great video
Sehr informativ, würde auf so langen Touren auch die mechanische Bremse bevorzugen, einen Bowdenzug bekommt man wahrscheinlich immer irgenwo her oder kann ihn notfalls mit Klemmen fixen
I am glad I saw this video because in another one I suggested you guys to get oval chainring but it looks like you beat me to the punch. Nice set up for the bike. The only thing I would personally try to add or change is the fork. You can choose one with no more than 120mm and one you can lock for the times you don’t need it. Also, try the WTB saddles, they are great and come in a wide variety of ways to make the ride more comfortable to you. 🤙
Hallo Henry. Tolles video!
Henry, I enjoyed this. I have the Fargo with the wood chipper bars and have found the Salsa dry bag (version pre bleed valve) is too large and too difficult to compress to fit between the bars to my liking. A compression sack with a garbage bag linner has worked best. This is to ask if you feel the sea to summit Big River bag is waterproof and a good option over compression sack + garbage bag liner I have been using? Much appreciated
Hey Henry! Love watching your videos. Thaks for sharing your experience with the bike! I'd be interested to know which navigation app you are using on your trip :) Save travels!
Lay the wheel on the ground, get your fingers behind the largest cassette cog, and pull. It should take a decent amount of pressure to get it off, but not a huge amount. The cassette, freehub and end cap should all come off together.
Great setup, when my bike breaks a Fargo looks a good choice. May I ask what ferries you used between Greece and Turkey as I cant seem to find any direct routes, Cheers
С большим удовольствием посмотрел все эпизоды вашего путешествия! Это хороший велосипед и моя мечта собрать что-то похожее. Отдельно хочу поблагодарить за обзор и сайт, где можно увидеть комплектацию
Nice setup. Have you ever had any thoughts on total weight or reducing weight at all? Do you think reducing the total weight by 6-7 kg make a noticable difference on hike-a-bike strethes?
I never weighted the bike to be honest, I only know that it's heavy to lift when fully loaded. On that note, I think every kilo makes a noticeable difference on hikeabikes and such... in my view there are two sides of luxury: bringing more things (like a chair for example) for comfort and so on, that's luxury...or bringing less items to have it easier while cycling in the mountains or hikeabikes or in the general handling, that's also luxury... I prefer the latter
First step: Use a stripe of Bar tape between the frame and cage for protection, grip & vibration absorption. Second step: use at least half a role of electrical tape and wrap it around.
So, you don't store anything that cannot get wet in the framebag? Where do you store your laptop and other electronics? And what's the reason you didn't go for the Saltyroll in combination with the Revelate handlebar harness? Because the Salsa bag has an air vent?
@@HenryMerk In case anyone is looking for help with sizing, I just purchased a 2022 model as well in the medium. I am 5'11"/180 cm, 30"/76.2cm inseam. The fit is great, and a large would have been too big both in terms of stand over and reach.
Nice setup. Love the storage idea for spare spokes.
I've broken 1 spoke in 40K miles riding in the last 7 years on a heavily laden bike.
