My first ever concert was John Denver in 1973. Rocky Mountain High came out the year before and was a huge hit so he was playing the larger venues. He came out on stage and explained that the bus carrying everything broke down and hadn't arrived yet but he, Bill Danoff and Taffy Nivert (his friends and backing singers/players), along with their guitars flew instead (on brand for John, a licensed pilot). He apologized because he was in his road clothes and didn't have the full band and Bill had to borrow a banjo but they would do their best. They then gave the most wonderful 2 hour concert I could imagine. A true musician will make music with what they have, not rely on all the fancy stuff. John was the real deal.
John wrote this song in 1966 and became a popular songs Vietnam for guys going off to war. Another beautiful song of John’s is High Calypso. John loved the ocean and wrote this song as a tribute to Jacques Cousteau, a great marine biologist/enviromentalist.
Yeah, he was flying a home built ultralight aircraft that he wasn't legally permitted to fly at the time, although he was a licensed pilot. Mind you he bought it from someone else that built it
John's father, Henry Deutschendorf was a pilot trainer for the U.S. Airforce and was the first person to break the sound barrier. John, like his father loved to fly. The Long Eazy was not built by John. Rather he bought the plane from a Dentist who built it and later sold it to John. John, after his touch and goes was on his way to his buddy Clint Eastwood's house to show him the plane when he crashed. John was loved by millions.
John Denver was born Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. on Dec. 31, 1943, at Walker AFB in Roswell, N.M. My father knew his father, who was an Air Force pilot. I was born in Roswell in 1955. John was also a pilot and loved to fly planes. I had the great privilege to play on stage with him in 1972 in Alabama. I then became a member of his summer road band from 1975 to 1979. I did this song many times with him (singing backup and playing rhythm guitar). He was a great man and I will never forget Oct. 12, 1997. "Leaving on a Jet Plane" was written by John when he was only 23.
The song isn't about having a love for planes, or even about jet planes. It's about having a job that requires travel, obligations that make you leave family behind. I'm sure John Denver's work as a singer was like that, always on the road for concerts and such, and seldom home to a stable family life. It may have been the loneliness of that sort of lifestyle that led to John having an affair that broke up his marriage to his first wife Annie (who he wrote "Annie's Song" for). The song that really gets to me now is his "Poems, Prayers, and Promises" which says "it turns me on to think of growing old. For though my life's been good to me there's still so much to do, so many things my mind has never known." John's death ended that promise for him.
John wrote this song before he was ever a flyer. One of his early songs that wasn't a hit at first, then Peter, Paul and Mary covered it and it was a hit . I remember singing it in 1971 when I was in 5th grade.
I really loved John Denver. Singing Leaving on a Jet plane is such a very touching song. The very sad ending ofcourse is his crash on the plane. His family & friends must be so heartbroken with this particular song. RIP John 💔💔
I live in Wisconsin. One city here, Oshkosh, is home to an association of experimental aircraft enthusiasts (known as the Experimental Aircraft Association or EAA). Every year since 1953 they hold a fly-in convention and the little Oshkosh airport becomes the busiest airport in the world. John Denver came every year and wandered about talking with the inventors just like any other enthusiast. Unfortunately, one of those experimental planes killed him. Officially it was listed as "pilot error" but it was really the poor location of the switch he needed to change fuel tanks.
John Denver was the Poet Laureate of Colorado, named so in 1974. The song "Rocky Mountain High" is one of the state songs of Colorado. He lived in Aspen, Colorado and in 1995 my then boyfriend and I had dinner at John's restaurant there. When he died I can say that it felt like the very mountains here were in mourning. RIP John, we lost you far too soon.
This feels like a very deep and thoughtful song. Knowing that he actually died in single person aircraft crash just makes it feel much more intense and raw in a lot of ways.
He didn't build the plane, he had just bought it from someone that DID build it from a kit. The saddest part was, it didn't have to happen. The switch for the fuel tanks was on the back of the pilots seat. He couldn't turn around to flip the switch and he couldn't reach it without turning a bit. His pilots license, I believe was also expired. All in all, a sad day for music lovers. He was a true talent!
That voice is pure auditive gold, anyone who says they do not like John Denver, has never really listened to his music, lyrically and vocally he was one of the very best we ever had. And while it might seem impossible to improve on this track, there is an even better version, a duet featuring Mama Cass, together they melt your soul... it's simply amazing. Once you hear them together Krizz, you'll hear why they were so special together, rarely have two voices been so perfect for each other, than those of John Denver and Mama Cass. So in your journey through the music lands of John Denver, do not skip over that one thinking you've already done this song, you'd be selling yourself short if you did :)
Johns voice to me had such a purity and beautiful melodic rich clarity and ease as if it fit with nature if that makes sense lol. Those are the only words that come to mind to describe his voice distinction. 🕊 One of a kind. Thx 👍
I was listening to the radio when they announced John’s death. I wept. He was a huge part of my childhood in the 1970s. The three people from that decade whose too-soon deaths hit me the hardest were John Denver, Karen Carpenter, and Jim Henson.
I grew up listening to folk music like John Denver, Jim Croce, Simon and Garfunkel, etc. Loved classic rock, heavy metal, Motown, oldies, jazz, blues, etc.
To me: listening to John Denver is like COMING HOME....his vocals just make you FEEL at peace and satisfied.....always felt like I was getting a HUG, listening to his music. It's so COOL how a person's vibe can convey in their music. THANKS for reacting to this one, Krizz!!
Another great choice! Pure singing. Such a beautiful soul, a real tragedy he left us too soon. Artists like him and Scott Walker, Glen Campbell, Bobbie Gentry have such clarity in their performances. I think you would love The Walker Brothers singing No Regrets. Great version on YTube "The Walker Brothers - No Regrets • TopPop" He has great vocals, but the composition itself is masterful. 😁
You should reimagine/rerelease this song. I don’t think anyone else has ever done it. I grew up on John Denver. Learned to play guitar with The John Denver Song Book- still have it. I think a new generation might appreciate his lyrics and music.
John Denver is one of my mother’s favorite, if not her favorite singer!❤ I remember as a kid playing her vinyl records on the record player at home. Of course, I was not born yet, 2 years later, when he wrote this song!🎵🎶❤️ ! but I am familiar with many of his songs!❤
When Peter Paul and Mary did tis it was taken as a soldiers goodbye as he left for Vietnam. It wasn't originally written for that but it really hit. It was also in the movie Armageddon (astronauts leaving the planet) so it has that feel.
I grew up in the late 60's, early 70's with John Denver's music. I love his masterpiece catalogue of music he gifted to anyone who wanted to hear. There is an amazing movie about his life that is phenomenal. The documentary he made about the Rockies and conserving nature is excellent and so beautiful. I've been following his music through the years but never got to see him live in concert. Thanks Krizz!
He bought the plane already built. He didn’t build it. He ran out of fuel over the water. The switch to change to the full tank was behind his seat out of his reach.
I had the privilege of seeing him in concert on the South Shore in Massachusetts......he is a large rabbit hole.....listen to I want to love or Perhaps Love...Calypso...Grandnas Feather bed and a TON more
This song is one everyone loves and even kids can sing.I think at the time his plane crash hadn't happened yet.we had an 8track mixtape with several of his songs on it. We were on a road trip to Florida. Me and my younger sisters were in the back of the station wagon working on how many times you can sing this song and country roads continuously until we got there. You never get tired of it even singing it over a n over. Not even mom- she had the best voice.
There is a lot of John Denver songs that are familiar, one of my favorites is one that you have to be a fan to know. Grandma's Feather Bed, this song is near and dear to my heart!🥰🥰🥰🥰

I love John Denver. I remember as a kid listening to his music and just felt so calm and peaceful. Annie’s song makes me cry every time… And really most of his music feels so nostalgic to me I get choked up. It made me so sad when he passed away.
Peter, Paul, and Mary did a beautiful rendition of this one. My sister and a friend and I covered their version for a college talent show back in 1992.

I need to see if you've listened to Annie's Song, Take me Home, ect... John Denver had so many great songs. His voice was just so pure.. b4 my time.. b4 your time.. but you truly sing well with him. You have a great voice.
Another beautiful person and singer songwriter lost to early. I remember listening to his 1981 album Some Days Are Diamonds on cassette in my parents car going to horse riding lessons for my sister. You should react to Annie’s Song and Grandmas Feather Bed….both songs my parents played around the house on 8 track.
I’m just a bit older than you but had older siblings so John Denver had always been part of my life. I was in high school when he passed and it seemed like I was the only one who cared. John Denver is a legend who needs to be remembered.
No, it is more general than that. It is about leaving your loved one for an extended period of time. @@hectorsmommy1717John said he wrote it with a longing to feel like the person in the song or rather to have that special someone. It was written just before he met Annie.
Incorrect. He always liked flight but yes probably put off learning coz of his father. John got his pilots licence, then later his dad taught him to fly his (Johns) Lear Jet and was his pilot/co-pilot for many years. Flying brought them to a good place together.
Other lyrics he wrote for another song "Yesterday, I had a dream about dying About laying to rest and then flying How the moment at hand is the only thing We really own And I lay in my bed and I wonder After all has been said and is done for Why is it thus we are here And so soon we are gone?" Theres a great video that was made in the 80's so the youtube version is poor quality but it is still good. has three things intertwined/mashed up beautifully 1) footage of the Challenger 2) Pres. Reagan's televised speech/ address to the thousands of schoolchildren who watched tge challenger and 3) the John Denver song I quoted above. Denver worked with NASA in developing the " Citizen in Space" program. He really wanted to be the first civillian in space but in yge end NASA decided yo chose a schoolteacher. Denver also wrote a direct tribute to the Challenger crew "Flying for me"
The song lyrics you posted he wrote for his father after his death...John had to make the call to turn off life support. But it so could have been autobiographical. Quite a few of his songs have a prophecy feel about them.
There is also a version where Mama Cass from the Mamas and Papas sings harmony with him, it’s beautiful as well 🥰
I agree! He and Cass Elliot singing is some of the best harmony I've ever heard. Gives me chills.John Denver, you are missed.
@@elisebarthalow6075 Aw yeah, that's a great version
I adore that version!
It's beautiful ❤
No backing vocals, no backing track, no auto-tune, and no backing band - just pure, untouched acoustic and vocals.......

And that's a 12-string guitar that John plays, not the average six-string.

John's father not the first person to break the sound barrier
Actually that would be Charles Chuck Yeager in 1947, he was from Lincoln County West Virginia
It was an air speed record in a Hustler aircraft. I think from memory it was 3 records he broke.
500,000 of our young men went to Viet Nam on jet planes. Over 50,000 died. Lots of tears were shed listening to this song.

This was big during the Vietnam era as you might guess
how many performers now could just go on stage with an acoustic guitar and hold an audience in rapture of the sounds surrounding them?
5:01 sadly as a young man he hated planes because he didn’t get along with his dad. After his dad died he found his love for planes

Other lyrics he wrote for another song
"Yesterday, I had a dream about dying
About laying to rest and then flying
How the moment at hand is the only thing
We really own
And I lay in my bed and I wonder
After all has been said and is done for
Why is it thus we are here
And so soon we are gone?"
Theres a great video that was made in the 80's so the youtube version is poor quality but it is still good. has three things intertwined/mashed up beautifully
1) footage of the Challenger
2) Pres. Reagan's televised speech/ address to the thousands of schoolchildren who watched tge challenger and
3) the John Denver song I quoted above.
Johns music soundtrack on the movie 😪 SUNSHINE is beautiful but a tear-jerker.
I was of the understanding that Cass Elliot (Mamma Cass) from the Mammas and Pappas wrote this song.
I sing this before we fly
Classic man😅
